Distance education has become a popular method for delivering sport management programs because online learning provides opportunities for learners to continue their education in various settings. Despite increased interests in online learning, the literature shows that one of the largest challenges to higher education is student retention in online programs. This case analysis will analyze the methodologies of Media Richness Theory and Social Presence Theory in online course design and instruction and how they aid overall program retention. This study, conducted in a graduate sport management program, could prove to be a resource for similar programs looking to improve online interaction.

This paper draws on material generated from a qualitative study of educational impacts of a British welfare reform affecting housing rent subsidy, size and location commonly known as "the bedroom tax" (Bragg et al., 2015), which was partly taken as a topic for study specifically because of its iconic status as a controversial and unpopular welfare "reform" (or cut). The analysis draws on Foucauldian understandings of subjectification or subject-formation--as elaborated both from within and in relation to the social (Foucault, 1970; 1983; Ball, 1990; Olssen, 2006; Popkewitz & Brennan, 1998), read through new and newly available perspectives (Allen, 2015; Pêcheux, 2014). This approach is applied to discuss how those addressed by educational policy, and also as research participants, are both subject to prevailing political and practice-oriented discourses (of educational "problems", and of the neoliberal frameworks by which poverty and welfare cuts are discussed), but also--at times--how they can become the subject of--in the sense of reformulating--these discourses in their accounts of everyday activities. After outlining our approach and the context for the study, we focus on four examples drawn from the narratives of the various stakeholders in the study--parents/carers, school staff and other community-based organisations as illustrations of how this discursive approach can provide rich readings of relevance to educational policy debates. From these we not only take further discussions of the production and regulation of subjectivities via social and educational policy practices, but also offer indicative glimpses of resistance to this as expressed by those who are its primary subjects, and where in one case such resistance brings our own research commitments under critical scrutiny. As such, the contribution of this article is both topic-related (concerning the educational impacts of policy) but, crucially, also conceptual and methodological, in motivating for a Foucauldian-influenced discursive approach that is sensitive to struggle and resistance.

Physical education teachers are often focused on the many benefits of physical education to students, but there must also be a consideration of risk. How can the risks in physical education be minimized to maximize the benefits? One way to accomplish this goal is to increase physical educators' understanding of the legal risks related to instruction. Injuries occurring in physical education classes and related activities often are accidental, yet sometimes occur due to mistakes made by the instructor. In accidental situations, the threat of a lawsuit filed against the school and the instructor remains a possibility. Therefore, developing a plan that considers legal issues and minimizes injury risk is essential. This article highlights two legal concerns that physical education instructors should know and incorporate into their lesson plans: negligence/accidental injury and discrimination-based claims. A general overview of what is necessary for a successful defense is presented through related case examples so that physical education instructors can understand more about their individual liability and what can be done to minimize the risk of legal action against them.

There are established links between education and well-being, and between poverty and education. This article draws on interviews with parents of school-aged children impacted by a policy in the UK commonly referred to as the 'bedroom tax'. A critical psychology perspective to education is put forward, acknowledging the complex interrelationships between psychological well-being, sociopolitical factors and education.

Each year, the college football season ends with hiring and firing moves. These transitions raise questions about the million-dollar salaries prevalent in college sports. Current events like this tend to dominate classroom conversations. Navigating these issues and their relation to class content can be challenging. Although the amount of money spent on coaches is not surprising, any discussion to provide new strategies may not be legally viable. For example, when students propose ideas about limiting coaching salaries, they may not realize the legal implication of that action. This case study uses the legal case-study model to address questions related to intercollegiate athletic coaching salaries and the possibility of a salary cap. Providing legal application in other courses will address these questions for both students and for faculty members who might not have the legal background to answer these questions. Qualitative longitudinal research designs are commonly considered a sensible orientation to exploring concepts of time and change. However, as a stand-alone method, qualitative longitudinal research has been criticized for its lack of philosophical and theoretical foundation (Hermanowicz 2013). This article explores the key tenets of qualitative longitudinal research and aligns with the notion that qualitative longitudinal designs be fused with other qualitative methods of data collection and analysis to enhance experimental trustworthiness (Calman, Brunton & Molassiotis 2013). Specifically, this article posits that a longitudinal design aligns well with the epistemological and ontological foundations of the interpretive phenomenological analysis (IPA) method to highlight longitudinal IPA as an emerging and distinctive qualitative methodology (Smith, Flowers & Larkin 2009). We have developed a sustainable dyeing technology with nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) fibers that would decrease the amount of water, salt and alkali used in cotton dyeing by one order of magnitude, but with comparable dyeing performance to a conventional exhaust dyeing method. This study explored the hypothesis that intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) promotes release of diffusible factors that can significantly influence the structure and function of cerebral arteries remote from the site of injury, through action on platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) receptors. Four groups of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were studied (n = 8 each): 1) sham; 2) sham + 60 mg/kg ip imatinib; 3) ICH (collagenase method); and 4) ICH + 60 mg/kg ip imatinib given 60 min after injury. At 24 h after injury, sham artery passive diameters (+3 mM EGTA) averaged 244 ± 7 µm (at 60 mmHg). ICH significantly increased passive diameters up to 6.4% and decreased compliance up to 42.5%. For both pressure- and potassium-induced contractions, ICH decreased calcium mobilization up to 26.2% and increased myofilament calcium sensitivity up to 48.4%. ICH reduced confocal colocalization of smooth muscle α-actin (αActin) with nonmuscle myosin heavy chain (MHC) and increased its colocalization with smooth muscle MHC, suggesting that ICH promoted contractile differentiation. ICH also enhanced colocalization of myosin light chain kinase (MLCK) with both αActin and regulatory 20-kDa myosin light chain. All effects of ICH on passive diameter, compliance, contractility, and contractile protein colocalization were significantly reduced or absent in arteries from animals treated with imatinib. These findings support the hypothesis that ICH promotes release into the cerebrospinal fluid of vasoactive factors that can diffuse to and promote activation of cerebrovascular PDGF receptors, thereby altering the structure, contractile protein organization, contractility, and smooth muscle phenotype of cerebral arteries remote from the site of hemorrhage. In this article, I argue for a reconsideration of the roman à clef, using Caroline Lamb's Glenarvon (1816) as a case study. I challenge the conventional narrative of the rise of the novel that labels the roman à clef as a vestigial form with no place in relation to the dominant realist novel. In making this argument, I establish a social reading practice, singular to romans à clef, using archival materials to illustrate the ways in which Regency readers circulated keys and gossip about Glenarvon and Lamb's life as a part of their response to the novel. Such a reading practice opens up possibilities for a marginalized writer, especially a marginalized female writer like Lamb, to disseminate gossip about herself as a way to enter a literary marketplace. 52 ketamine users were 'opportunistically' recruited to take part in a survey of the psychological effects of the drug, in Manchester, United Kingdom in 2008. Twenty-seven ketamine-naïve respondents were also recruited for comparison in respect of 'other' recreational drug use and level of schizotypy. Ketamine users attributed a wide range of appetitive, aversive, after-effect, and dissociative experiences to the drug. They also reported using a much wider range of other recreational drugs than ketamine non-users. Former users reported significantly fewer positive or dissociative experiences than current users. Cellulose nanofibrils (CNF) were produced by high-pressure homogenization from kraft pulp in the presence of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) of varying molecular weights. CNF pretreated with 250 kD CMC exhibited the maximum specific surface area (SSA) of 641 m2/g, which is comparable to that of CNF pretreated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-piperidinyl-1-oxyl (TEMPO)-meditated oxidation with a high degree of fibrillation. Rheological and microscopic analyses also indicated a high level of fibrillation for the CMC-pretreated CNF. In contrast, the reference CNF without the CMC pretreatment showed a lower level of fibrillation, which was reflected in decreased viscosity and the reduction of SSA by a factor of 19. With the high-degree fibrillation and low toxicity, the CMC pretreatment is a promising method for the production of high-quality CNF in an environmentally friendly way. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
