Even with the best infection control protocols in place, the risk of a hospital-acquired infection of the surface of an implanted device remains significant. A bacterial biofilm can form and has the potential to escape the host immune system and develop resistance to conventional antibiotics, ultimately causing the implant to fail, seriously impacting patient well-being. Here, we demonstrate a 4 log reduction in the infection rate by the common pathogen S. aureus of 3D-printed polyaryl ether ketone (PAEK) polymeric surfaces by covalently binding the antimicrobial peptide Mel4 to the surface using plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) treatment. The surfaces with added texture created by 3D-printed processes such as fused deposition-modelled polyether ether ketone (PEEK) and selective laser-sintered polyether ketone (PEK) can be equally well protected as conventionally manufactured materials. Unbound Mel4 in solution at relevant concentrations is non-cytotoxic to osteoblastic cell line Saos-2. Mel4 in combination with PIII aids Saos-2 cells to attach to the surface, increasing the adhesion by 88% compared to untreated materials without Mel4. A reduction in mineralisation on the Mel4-containing surfaces relative to surfaces without peptide was found, attributed to the acellular portion of mineral deposition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The deposition of gold-colored titanium nitride films without applying substrate heating is of significant interest due to the increasing demand for decorative coatings on temperature-sensitive three-dimensional substrates. Here, the energetic impact of Nb1+ ions during the deposition of TiN was achieved within a bipolar high-power impulse magnetron sputtering discharge operating on a Nb target. A separate titanium target was operated with direct current magnetron sputtering in the same reactive argon–nitrogen mixture. This process aimed to achieve a dense titanium nitride with the assistance of the niobium ion bombardment. The niobium controlled the phase formation and structure of the resulting Nb-containing TiN coating without needing external heating. The niobium ion bombardment during deposition increases the density of the titanium nitride coatings, promoting the formation of the cubic phase favored for its gold color and excellent mechanical and tribological properties, including HF1-level adhesion. Energy-selective mass spectrometer investigations revealed an increase in the flux and the energy of titanium ions due to momentum transfer from niobium ions to titanium neutrals in the plasma generated between the targets and the substrate. The approach introduced here paves the way for the formation of the cubic phase of Nb-doped TiN films without external heating, producing coatings with combined decorative and protective properties. A theoretical and experimental analysis is carried out of radiative heat transfer in the coaxial geometry of evacuated tube solar collectors. The gray body approximation implicit in the use of an effective emissivity does not strictly apply to evacuated tube solar collectors due to selective absorber coating and partially transmitting outer glass in the thermal infrared, especially when constructed from borosilicate. We develop analytic expressions for the heat transfer through the outer envelope and show the equations no longer follow a simple form where an effective emissivity for the system can be defined. To test all approximations in practice, an experiment is performed using an evacuated solar collector manufactured in the 1980s by the Nitto Kohki company in Japan using the effective emissivity approximation to determine the typical heat transfer characteristics using net radiative heat flows in both directions. This method enabled a good fit to temperature–time data for cooling and heating of the inner tube for temperatures between 10 and 85 °C. The results confirm that the effective emittance method can be used in situations with typical glass wall thickness and temperatures. At temperatures greater 100 °C, the spectral distribution of the emitted radiation falls significantly within the transmitting region of the outer glass and can no longer be neglected. The work has verified the stability of the vacuum in this type of collector as the tube still functions well, maintaining a low emissivity and good vacuum after approximately 40 years in storage conditions. Autologous bone replacement remains the preferred treatment for segmental defects of the mandible; however, it cannot replicate complex facial geometry and causes donor site morbidity. Bone tissue engineering has the potential to overcome these limitations. Various commercially available calcium phosphate-based bone substitutes (Novabone®, BioOss®, and Zengro®) are commonly used in dentistry for small bone defects around teeth and implants. However, their role in ectopic bone formation, which can later be applied as vascularized graft in a bone defect, is yet to be explored. Here, we compare the above-mentioned bone substitutes with autologous bone with the aim of selecting one for future studies of segmental mandibular repair. Six female sheep, aged 7–8 years, were implanted with 40 mm long four-chambered polyether ether ketone (PEEK) bioreactors prepared using additive manufacturing followed by plasma immersion ion implantation (PIII) to improve hydrophilicity and bioactivity. Each bioreactor was wrapped with vascularized scapular periosteum and the chambers were filled with autologous bone graft, Novabone®, BioOss®, and Zengro®, respectively. The bioreactors were implanted within a subscapular muscle pocket for either 8 weeks (two sheep), 10 weeks (two sheep), or 12 weeks (two sheep), after which they were removed and assessed by microCT and routine histology. Moderate bone formation was observed in autologous bone grafts, while low bone formation was observed in the BioOss® and Zengro® chambers. No bone formation was observed in the Novabone® chambers. Although the BioOss® and Zengro® chambers contained relatively small amounts of bone, endochondral ossification and retained hydroxyapatite suggest their potential in new bone formation in an ectopic site if a consistent supply of progenitor cells and/or growth factors can be ensured over a longer duration. Amorphous carbon films with an intermediate content of sp3 atoms are finding applications as resistive switches in devices for bio-sensing and for neuromorphic pattern recognition. To understand resistive switching and photoconductivity in amorphous semiconductors dominated by hopping conduction, we present a theory that unifies the optical and electronic properties. The theory considers all of the states to be localized to various extents instead of being extended electronic states. The electronic density of states (eDOS) is modeled with Gaussian functions, symmetric in energy around the Fermi energy. A "hopping mobility" between localized states that is explicitly both energy and temperature dependent is introduced. We describe an example application to amorphous carbon films prepared by using high power impulse magnetron sputtering that have a range of sp3 hybridization fractions of the carbon atoms. The electronic bandgaps of the films are observed to correlate with their optical bandgaps. The eDOS is benchmarked against optical property measurements made by ellipsometry. The theory explains the temperature dependence of the resistivity and predicts that the films should show a temperature dependent hopping photoconductivity. Measurements confirm the presence of the photoconductivity and reveal its spectral dependence. A link is made between persistent hopping photoconductivity and resistive switching. The drastic reduction in launch and manufacturing costs of space hardware has facilitated the emergence of "commercial" space. Radiation‐hard organometal halide perovskite solar cells (PSCs) with low‐cost and high‐efficiency potentials are promising for space applications.High‐efficiency PSCs are tested with different hole transport materials (HTMs) and dopants on 175µm sapphire substrates under 7MeV‐proton‐irradiation‐tests at accumulated fluences of 1011, 1012, and 1013 protons cm−2. While all cells retain >90% of their initial power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) after 1011 protons cm−2 irradiation, PSCs that have tris(pentafluorophenyl)borane (TPFB) as the HTM dopant and poly[bis(4‐phenyl)(2,5,6‐trimethylphenyl) amine (PTAA) or PTAA:C8BTBT (C8BTBT = 2,7‐Dioctyl[1]benzothieno[3,2‐b][1]benzothiophene) as the HTM are more tolerant to higher‐fluence radiation than their counterparts with the lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) dopant and the 2,2′,7,7′‐Tetrakis[N,N‐di(4‐methoxyphenyl)amino]‐9,9′‐spirobifluorene (Spiro‐OMeTAD) HTM. Radiation induces fluorine diffusion from the LiTFSI dopant toward the perovskite absorber (confirmed by depth‐resolved X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy) introducing defects. Radiation‐induced defects in cells with the TPFB dopant instead are different and can be "annealed out" by thermal vacuum resulting in PCE recovery. This is the first report using thermal admittance spectroscopy and deep‐level transient spectroscopy for defect analyses on proton‐irradiated and thermal‐vacuum‐recovered PSCs. Segmental mandibular defects are a common problem in head and neck surgery. Osseous free flap transfer has revolutionized mandibular reconstruction; however, donor site morbidity remains a significant problem. Bone tissue engineering (BTE) employs strategies for reconstructing critical-sized bone defects, improving the patients' quality of life. Scaffolds employed for BTE must be mechanically stable, osseointegrate with neighboring bone, and promote osteogenesis. The need for modified, hybrid constructs with a diversity of favorable characteristics is essential. This review focuses on the recent progresses in modulating the physiochemical properties and applications of biomaterials in BTE in the context of mandibular segmental defect repair.
