The complexity of modern biology poses challenges in fostering interdisciplinary understanding, particularly between practicing scientists and the public. Furthermore, scientists often lack formal training in science communication, despite various motivations to engage the public. The science literacy of the public in the biological sciences can also vary across socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. Leveraging popular culture and informal learning practices to promote active learning offers promising avenues to enhance public understanding of biological systems. Organized sports hold collective recognition across various communities and cultures, serving as a means to bring people together. Notably, the NCAA March Madness event holds widespread national and international popularity, presenting an opportunity to laterally apply this concept to promote science communication within STEM and biology education. An educational social media and web-based contest tool was developed integrating NCAA-inspired brackets with animal biological systems concepts. The tool featured tournament-style matchups based on animal biological systems, interesting animal facts, and a voting system, all housed within a user-friendly interface. To encourage regular user access to the tool, graphic designs were developed for all social media posts to aid in visual recruitment to the voting website. Based on online metrics, the use of social media garnered repeat users across both the public and educators. The latter noted the tool's simplicity and informative content. Application of this social media and web-based bracket contest tool, which leverages informal settings for active learning for use in biology education, can foster science communication to engage audiences, improve comprehension, and promote interdisciplinary biology education.

While COVID-19 dramatically changed the way that we taught during the pandemic, not all of these changes were negative. In response to the pivot to remote learning, Western University employed student digital media interns (DMIs) to support faculty in adapting their courses. This resulted in the formation of the Digital Media Intern program at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry (SSMD), a students-as-partners (SaP) approach that supports faculty in the adoption and use of educational technology. Despite moving back to in-person learning, the DMI program is thriving and has expanded its scope. An understanding of the learner context of technology can be missing when faculty are designing and updating their courses. The DMI program helps bridge this gap by creating a way for students to directly contribute to their education, gain meaningful employment or experience, and provide feedback to instructors. Instructors benefit in two ways: by gaining hands-on support and ongoing, actionable feedback. This case study will outline the evolution of the DMI program, its implementation and its impact. Leader and student perspectives will also be shared. It describes the evolution of this student intern strategy from a band-aid solution to a fully integrated and supported unit in one academic faculty.

Aiming to develop a course with students as partners and to explore the process, two faculty initiated a curriculum development partnership with graduate students to design a new field study course. Applying a collaborative inquiry approach, we engaged in a research collaboration with graduate students online. The data collection was organised and facilitated using MURAL, a digital whiteboard that enabled synchronous and asynchronous visual collaboration with pictures, text, links, emojis, diagrams, and drawings. The study concluded with an exploration of the students' experiences in the project. The co-created course design and pedagogy informed the development of a new field study course which was subsequently approved through the university curriculum approval process. Students shared that they appreciated reflecting, sharing, and contributing together as a group; they felt important and valued; and that it was meaningful to them to contribute to the learning of future students entering the program.

This article explores the rise of digitalisation in Australian higher education and its impact on learning and teaching, administration, and regulatory obligations. This digitalisation can be epitomised by the prevalence of learning management systems (LMS) which have reshaped the conduct and configuration of education. As universities have embraced the LMS, as forced by the pandemic, the confluence of disruptive digitalisation combined with globalisation, regulatory reforms, and shifts in government funding models have seen the Australian higher education sector in constant evolution. This article contextualises the impacts of digitalisation using the lens of neoliberalism and globalisation, with past, current, and future state considerations in the sector. It includes a case study from a large metropolitan Australian university with a signature pedagogy of industry-partnered and flexible learning to consider how Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Australia must continue to evolve in identity and provision of learning to serve social interests for the future in digitalised contexts.

Background: We are a research team of clinical, academic and advocacy-based researchers with and without learning disabilities, working on the "Humanising Healthcare" (for people with learning disabilities) project. The project is dedicated to finding and sharing healthcare practices that enhance the lives of people with learning disabilities. As part of our ethics applications to access National Health Service study sites for fieldwork, we worked together to write guiding principles for co-producing research ethics with researchers with learning disabilities. In this paper, we introduce these Participatory Ethics Good Practice Guidelines and reflect on our collaboration. Methods: We reflect on developing the Participatory Ethics Good Practice Guidelines. These guidelines were developed during online co-production meetings with our full research team, including advocacy-based organisation researchers, clinical researchers and university researchers. We considered consent, understanding research, and understanding research methods during the development of these Guidelines. Findings: We present ten guidelines for co-producing research with people with learning disabilities. Conclusions: Our findings may be helpful to researchers with learning disabilities, university and clinical researchers, funders, and those who work in research governance (e.g., ethics committees and university research departments).

The purpose of this study was to examine the relation between teachers' reports of classroom adversity, a measure of classroom hardship, and student problem behavior in a sample of students with or at risk of emotional/behavioral disorders. We also examined the extent to which this relation varied as a function of multiple domains of classroom quality. A series of multiple regression models, adjusting for the nesting of students within classrooms, were conducted. Models revealed a significant effect of the interaction between classroom adversity and classroom emotional support on teachers' reports of student problem behaviors. This effect indicated that in low-adversity classrooms, teachers differed in their reports of students' problem behaviors depending on their level of emotional support. In high-adversity classrooms, however, teachers' reports of students' problem behaviors were relatively similar regardless of their level of emotional support. Findings suggest classroom adversity is likely an important contextual factor to consider when examining student outcomes and that teacher emotional support may mitigate the influence of classroom adversity. We conclude with a discussion of the implications of this work for research and practice.

The growing presence and impact of predominantly female online influencers suggests the proliferation of a cultural phenomenon that characterizes the social aspects of our digital lives. Working with the notion of gender and maker literacies, this paper shines light on newer forms of making practices by looking at influencer cultures of five popular online social media platforms. Situating the research in a Caribbean context, this paper examines the "influencer culture" by looking at the platformized literacy practices of four Caribbean female influencers and using the concepts of literacy sponsorship and creolization as lenses through which to view the interrelationships and accompanying practices between the influencers and their local and global followers. The paper argues that social media platforms are strategically curated digital-maker spaces that influencers use to shift and change literacy practices and perspectives related to gender, language, and culture. Findings from this qualitative study suggest that these influencers' sponsorship of creolized literacies is reflected in their power to enact social change and transformation through advocacy, consciousness, and community-building. The paper concludes by considering the potential for such social actors and their digital-making practices to influence our contemporary global sociocultural and educational landscapes.

Emerging research points to high rates of major psychiatric disorders and chronic medical conditions among autistic adults. However, the unique healthcare needs of autistic adults are often overlooked, perhaps due to limitations in population-level surveillance and widespread public misconceptions about autism in adulthood. Understanding the mechanisms underlying this prevalence of poor health outcomes in autistic adults requires an exploration into the lived experiences of autistic adults across their lifespans. This study uses a qualitative approach to investigate the healthcare experiences of autistic adults. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 23 autistic adults in the United States, ranging in age from 18 to 56 years, seven of whom identified as nonbinary or gender non-conforming. We asked autistic adults about how they manage their health and interact with healthcare systems. Through thematic analysis of the data, barriers to receipt of quality care for autistic adults were identified. Results were then conceptualized through the Systems Engineering Initiative for Patient Safety model of work system and patient safety. Through this model, this study describes the interactions between autistic adults and their healthcare systems, pointing to specific areas for improvement and intervention. Overall, findings advocate for a system-level approach to improving health outcomes of autistic adults.

Playgroups are a unique form of early childhood provision involving parents and their children attending together. Parents' attendance at playgroups provides opportunities for involvement in play. However, little is known about parents' practices of co-play in playgroups and the potential for these practices to enhance children's play experiences in early childhood. Drawing on practice architectures theory, this paper identifies parents' practices of co-play in a community playgroup, and the enablers and constraints on those practices. Data were collected through ethnographic methods, which included participant observation and informal individual interviews. The findings show that parents' practices of co-play consider the child's needs and interests in ways that support development and enhance children's play in the community playgroup. This research contributes new knowledge about the range of co-play practices engaged in by parents with children in community playgroups.

This research investigates how children located in separate homes use the psychological function of imagination to engage in sociodramatic play using networked digital technologies. Specifically, it examines how 7- to 8-year-old children create imaginary play situations in the same "Minecraft: Education Edition" digitally-mediated environment whilst synchronously using the "FaceTime" video-communication tool to discuss their play. Drawing on cultural-historical conceptualizations of play, findings identified in this study describe how children reworked and combined elements of reality via imagination to enable online sociodramatic play. This study provides theoretical insight into how adults may best foster children's imagination in digitally-mediated environments to support online sociodramatic play, of especial benefit to children during periods of lockdown associated with the global pandemic.

The Hawai'i Climate Data Portal (HCDP) is designed to facilitate streamlined access to a wide variety of climate data and information for the State of Hawai'i. Prior to the development of the HCDP, gridded climate products and point datasets were fragmented, outdated, not easily accessible, and not available in near-real time. To address these limitations, HCDP researchers developed the cyberinfrastructure necessary to 1) operationalize data acquisition and product production in a near-real-time environment and 2) make data and products easily accessible to a wide range of users. The HCDP hosts several high-resolution (250 m) gridded products including monthly rainfall and daily temperature (maximum, minimum, and mean), station data, and gridded future projections of rainfall and temperature. HCDP users can visualize both gridded and point data, create and download custom maps, and query station and gridded data for export with relative ease. The 'virtual station' feature allows users to create a climate time series at any grid point. The primary objective of the HCDP is to promote sharing and access to data and information to streamline research activities, improve awareness, and promote the development of tools and resources that can help to build adaptive capacities. The HCDP products have the potential to serve a wide range of users including researchers, resource managers, city planners, engineers, teachers, students, civil society organizations, and the broader community. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The Hawai'i Climate Data Portal (HCDP) is an open-source data platform designed to provide easy access to climate data and information for the State of Hawai'i. The HCDP contains both station data and historical and future maps of rainfall and temperature. These high-resolution (250 m) maps are updated in near-real time and available for streamlined visualization and download. The HCDP fills a critical need for a centralized clearinghouse of climate data in the State of Hawai'i. HCDP data can be used to make resource management decisions and to raise awareness of observed and projected changes to the climate system. Many ongoing projects are leveraging HCDP data to develop models and decision support tools to improve adaptive capacities across the state.
