Methods: Using a cross-sectional study and a comprehensive sampling survey, 34,138 students aged 5-19 years were screened for refraction in 22 primary and secondary schools in Langzhong, and 4000 behavioral questionnaires were delivered at random. After evaluation and rational problem-solving, a total of 3764 valid questionnaires were obtained. SPSS 23.0 statistical software was used for data analysis. Results: The percentage of myopia among primary and secondary school students in Langzhong was 65.61%, with female students having a higher rate than male students (P < 0.05); 52.81% of primary school students, 86.26% of secondary school students, and 88.17% of high school students had myopia. The incidence of myopia detection increased with school age (P < 0.001), indicating a correlation between age and myopia prevalence. The prevalence of myopia was mainly low (40.53%) and moderate myopia (19.89%). The prevalence of high myopia (5.19%) was relatively high. The prevalence of myopia among female students (5.54%) was greater than that in male students (P < 0.05) and increased with age (P < 0.001). The proportion of students who wore eyeglasses was 24.36%, with a larger proportion of female students (25.93%) than male students (22.61%) (P < 0.001). In addition, the rate of eyeglass use increased with school age (P < 0.001). A logistic regression analysis revealed that higher grade point averages, female gender, and long-term usage of electronic items were risk factors for myopia. The results of the questionnaire survey revealed that students in this region were under immense pressure to perform well academically, spent a lot of time engaged in near-work activities, and had a low rate of myopia awareness; 24.43% of the students had not had a vision examination in the previous year, indicating that parents did not pay sufficient attention to eye health. Conclusion: The incidence of myopia among children and teenagers is high in Northeast Sichuan, and the outlook for addressing the problem is bleak. Introduction Limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD) are a group of progressive, rare, genetically and clinically heterogeneous neuromuscular conditions. The North Star Assessment for limb-girdle type muscular dystrophies (NSAD), a clinician-reported outcome measure (ClinRO) of motor performance, was initially developed and validated for use in dysferlinopathy, an autosomal recessive form of limb-girdle muscular dystrophy (LGMD R2/2B). Recent developments in treatments for limb-girdle muscular dystrophies (LGMD) have highlighted the urgent need for disease-specific ClinROs. The purpose of this study was to understand the ability of the NSAD to quantify motor function across the broad spectrum of LGMD phenotypes. Methods. Assessments of 130 individuals with LGMD evaluated by the physical therapy teams at Nationwide Children&apos;s Hospital and the John Walton Muscular Dystrophy Research Centre were included in the analysis. NSAD, 100-m timed test (100MTT), and Performance of Upper Limb 2.0 assessment data were collected. Psychometric analysis with Rasch measurement methods was used to examine the NSAD for suitability and robustness by determining the extent to which the observed data "fit" with predictions of those ratings from the Rasch model. The NSAD score was correlated with the 100MTT and Performance of Upper Limb 2.0 assessment scores for external construct validity. Results. The NSAD demonstrated a good spread of items covering a continuum of abilities across both individuals who had LGMD and were ambulatory and individuals who had LGMD and were weaker and nonambulatory. Items fit well with the construct measured, validating a summed total score. The NSAD had excellent interrater reliability [intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) = 0.986, 95% CI = 0.981-0.991] and was highly correlated with the 100MTT walk/run velocity (Spearman rho correlation coefficient of [r.sub.s](134) = .92). Conclusion. Although LGMD subtypes may differ in age of onset, rate of progression, and patterns of muscle weakness, the overall impact of progressive muscle weakness on motor function is similar. The NSAD is a reliable and valid ClinRO of motor performance for individuals with LGMD and is suitable for use in clinical practice and research settings. Impact. Recent developments in potential pharmacological treatments for LGMD have highlighted the urgent need for disease-specific outcome measures. Validated and meaningful outcome measures are necessary to capture disease presentation, to inform expected rates of progression, and as endpoints for measuring the response to interventions in clinical trials. The NSAD, a scale of motor performance for both individuals who have LGMD and are ambulatory and those who are nonambulatory, is suitable for use in clinical and research settings. Introduction Musculoskeletal conditions remain one of the largest burdens of disease in primary care settings, (1,2) and a central part of the treatment pathway for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions is [...], Objective. A vital part of the initial examination performed by a physical therapist is to establish whether the patient would benefit from physical therapist intervention. This process includes knowledge about contraindications for treatment and screening for serious pathologies. However, little is known about the physical therapists&apos; views and thoughts about their own practice when screening for serious pathologies. The purpose of this study was to explore the experience gained by physical therapists when screening for serious pathologies among their patients. Methods. This was a qualitative study based on individual semi-structured interviews with 9 primary care physical therapists. The interviews were analyzed using reflexive thematic analysis, and generated themes were explained and reported with relevant quotes. Results. Three overall themes were generated: (1) the role of physical therapists in the diagnostic process; (2) responsibility from the individual to the group; and (3) the difficult task of cooperation. The physical therapists described how they relied more on their clinical suspicion than on asking red-flag questions when screening for serious pathologies. They also questioned their differential diagnostic abilities. Finally, they saw a potential to further enhance their confidence in the area by reflecting on the matter with colleagues and by receiving more feedback about their clinical reasoning regarding serious pathologies from general practitioners. Conclusion. These findings suggest that physical therapists primarily rely on their clinical suspicion when screening for serious pathologies but at the same time are uncertain about their differential diagnostic abilities. Impact. These findings can inform future interventions targeting the physical therapists&apos; abilities to detect serious pathology. Introduction Interprofessional collaboration has been defined as the process of developing and maintaining effective interprofessional working relationships with learners, practitioners, patients, clients, families, and communities with the goal of enabling [...], Purpose: The Michigan Caries Prevention Program (MCPP) aimed to reduce the burden of childhood dental disease in the state of Michigan by offering training programs to implement preventive oral health services during well-child medical visits. The purpose of this study was to elicit feedback from the participants of the MCPP and determine which oral health services were implemented post-training, identify implementation barriers and assess provider comfort levels in performing oral screenings and fluoride applications. Methods: A descriptive electronic survey was utilized for data collection. A 15-item survey consisting of multiple choice and Likert scale questions was sent to medical providers who had participated in the MCPP from 2015-2017 (n=1115). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze the data. Results: A total of 170 surveys were completed for a 15% response rate. The majority of the participants were physicians (82%, n=134). Nearly all participants reported performing oral screenings and fluoride varnish application post- training (93%, n=153). Participants felt more comfortable applying fluoride varnish than performing oral screenings (80%, n=121 vs 70%, n=112), respectively. Barriers included lack of time, understaffed, staff resistance, feeling that procedures were outside of their scope of practice and disinterest from parents or safety concerns. A majority (70%, n=112) reported that the MCPP training did not help to establish new relationships with community dental providers. Conclusion: Medical providers indicate that the MCPP training was beneficial and that they were willing and able to incorporate oral health screenings and fluoride varnish applications in their practice, but that they face challenges in developing relationships with dental care providers. Opportunities for dental hygienists to work in non-traditional medical-dental integration practice settings may help to increase oral health services offered to patients and improve communication between health care providers. Introduction Sleep disordered breathing (SDB) has risen along with obesity in the United States (US). A recent estimate of the prevalence of mild to severe SDB is projected to be [...], Purpose: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common breathing disorder; however, many individuals remain undiagnosed. The purpose of this study was to assess the comfort level of community-dwelling adults to participate in OSA screening in a dental office setting and survey the OSA risk levels of an adult population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted among adults presenting at the University of Minnesota Driven to Discover Research Facility during the 2018 Minnesota State Fair. Participants completed a brief survey including the eight-item STOP-Bang questionnaire for OSA screening. Electronic tablets were used for data capture. Data analyses included descriptive statistics, t-tests, and Chi-square tests. Results: A total of 639 adults met the survey inclusion criteria (n=639). The majority of participants (88%) reported no prior OSA diagnosis. Based on STOP-Bang criteria, 61% (n=344) of the participants were at low, 29% (n=161) intermediate, and 10% (n= 56) high risk of OSA. A majority (64%) of participants reported being either "comfortable" or "very comfortable&apos;" with OSA screening performed in a dental office setting. Conclusion: Over one third of participants with no prior OSA diagnosis were at moderate to high risk for OSA, and the majority stated that they would be comfortable undergoing OSA screening in a dental office setting. Dental hygienists screening patients for OSA with the STOP-BANG questionnaire are likely to have a high level of patient acceptance. Referring patients to the appropriate health care provider for further testing may increase timely diagnoses and treatment of OSA.
