Separating molecules or ions with sub-Angstrom scale precision is important but technically challenging. Achieving such a precise separation using membranes requires Angstrom scale pores with a high level of pore size uniformity. Herein, we demonstrate that precise solute-solute separation can be achieved using polyamide membranes formed via surfactant-assembly regulated interfacial polymerization (SARIP). The dynamic, self-assembled network of surfactants facilitates faster and more homogeneous diffusion of amine monomers across the water/hexane interface during interfacial polymerization, thereby forming a polyamide active layer with more uniform sub-nanometre pores compared to those formed via conventional interfacial polymerization. The polyamide membrane formed by SARIP exhibits highly size-dependent sieving of solutes, yielding a step-wise transition from low rejection to near-perfect rejection over a solute size range smaller than half Angstrom. SARIP represents an approach for the scalable fabrication of ultra-selective membranes with uniform nanopores for precise separation of ions and small solutes., Separating molecules or ions with sub-Angstrom scale precision is important but technically challenging. Since the advent of thin-film composite polyamide membranes brought forth a breakthrough in desalination and water purification membranes nearly half a century ago, recent years have only witnessed marginal improvements in the water-salt selectivity of these membranes. The slow progression is partly attributable to limited understanding of membrane synthesis–structure–performance relationships. A centralized archive of reverse osmosis membrane (RO) characterization data may lead to a shared understanding of features that maximize RO performance and unify research efforts. The Open Membrane Database (OMD), which can be found at www.openmembranedatabase.org , is a growing database of over 600 water purification and desalination membranes that are sourced from peer-reviewed journals, patents, and commercial product data. Here, we outline the detailed functionality of the database, the transport theory underlying the membrane performance calculations, and best practices for membrane performance testing and reporting. The user-sourced, open-access database may be used to benchmark novel RO membranes against the state of the art, conduct meta-analyses, and develop synthesis–structure–performance relationships, each of which will be critical to advancing membrane development.

This study demonstrates the proof-of-concept of biogas sparging to control membrane fouling during sludge centrate pre-concentration by forward osmosis (FO). Sludge centrate sparging by biogas reduced membrane fouling (measured by water flux decline) and filtration time by two and eight times, respectively, compared to FO operation without biogas sparging at the same water recovery of 60%. In addition, the water flux was almost fully recovered by physical flushing when biogas sparging was applied. Biogas sparging also resulted in a significant improvement in the enrichment of organic, ammonia, and phosphate to close to the theoretical value based on mass balance calculation. In other words, organic matter and nutrients were retained in the bulk solution for subsequent recovery. Fouling mitigation and nutrient enrichment improvement by biogas sparging could be attributed to carbonate buffering to maintain a near neutral pH for preventing calcium phosphate precipitation on the membrane surface and ammonia volatilisation.

A fundamental study elucidates the mechanisms underlying selective ion transport through desalination membranes., State-of-the-art desalination membranes exhibit high water-salt selectivity, but their ability to discriminate between ions is limited. Elucidating the fundamental mechanisms underlying ion transport and selectivity in subnanometer pores is therefore imperative for the development of ion-selective membranes. Here, we compare the overall energy barrier for salt transport and energy barriers for individual ion transport, showing that cations and anions traverse the membrane pore in an independent manner. Supported by density functional theory simulations, we demonstrate that electrostatic interactions between permeating counterion and fixed charges on the membrane substantially hinder intrapore diffusion. Furthermore, using quartz crystal microbalance, we break down the contributions of partitioning at the pore mouth and intrapore diffusion to the overall energy barrier for salt transport. Overall, our results indicate that intrapore diffusion governs salt transport through subnanometer pores due to ion-pore wall interactions, providing the scientific base for the design of membranes with high ion-ion selectivity.

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is a membrane-based technology for water desalination. Of paramount importance is the understanding of ion selectivity in mixtures of salts, i.e., to what extent the membrane retains one ion more than another in a multicomponent salt solution. We apply continuum transport theory to describe a large set of data for the ion selectivity of RO membranes treating brackish groundwater with more than 10 different monovalent and divalent ions. The model is based on the Donnan steric partitioning pore model extended to include ions of multiple charge states, such as bicarbonate/carbonic acid, ammonia/ammonium, and hydroxyl/hydronium ions and the acid-base reactions between them and with the membrane charge. By adjusting for each ion the ratio of ion size over pore size, we can fit the model to the data. We note that the fitted ion sizes do not always follow a logical order based on the ionic or hydrated size of the ions and that rejection of divalent cations is overestimated in some cases. We discuss possible theoretical improvements to address these discrepancies. Our results highlight the potential of continuum transport theory to describe in detail multicomponent ion transport in RO membranes. The development of a detailed and validated physics-based model is an important step toward achieving improved operation and design of RO-based desalination systems.

We review recent advances, limitations, and prospects of solar-thermal desalination for sustainable, low-cost water production., Solar-thermal desalination (STD) is a potentially low-cost, sustainable approach for providing high-quality fresh water in the absence of water and energy infrastructures. Despite recent efforts to advance STD by improving heat-absorbing materials and system designs, the best strategies for maximizing STD performance remain uncertain. To address this problem, we identify three major steps in distillation-based STD: (i) light-to-heat energy conversion, (ii) thermal vapor generation, and (iii) conversion of vapor to water via condensation. Using specific water productivity as a quantitative metric for energy efficiency, we show that efficient recovery of the latent heat of condensation is critical for STD performance enhancement, because solar vapor generation has already been pushed toward its performance limit. We also demonstrate that STD cannot compete with photovoltaic reverse osmosis desalination in energy efficiency. We conclude by emphasizing the importance of factors other than energy efficiency, including cost, ease of maintenance, and applicability to hypersaline waters.

Biomimetic desalination membranes could achieve ultraselectivity for water over ions, but not over neutral solutes., Water scarcity and inadequate membrane selectivity have spurred interest in biomimetic desalination membranes, in which biological or synthetic water channels are incorporated in an amphiphilic bilayer. As low channel densities (0.1 to 10%) are required for sufficient water permeability, the amphiphilic bilayer matrix will play a critical role in separation performance. We determine selectivity limits for biomimetic membranes by studying the transport behavior of water, neutral solutes, and ions through the bilayers of lipid and block-copolymer vesicles and projecting performance for varying water channel densities. We report that defect-free biomimetic membranes would have water/salt permselectivities ~108-fold greater than current desalination membranes. In contrast, the solubility-based permeability of lipid and block-copolymer bilayers (extending Overton’s rule) will result in poor rejection of hydrophobic solutes. Defect-free biomimetic membranes thus offer great potential for seawater desalination and ultrapure water production, but would perform poorly in wastewater reuse. Potential strategies to limit neutral solute permeation are discussed.

Antimicrobial surfaces are needed for many health care applications. Single walled carbon nanotubes (SWNT) have shown promise as antimicrobial agents, but important questions persist concerning the effects of tube bundling, a common phenomenon owing to strong hydrophobicity. We investigate here the influence of bundling on the layer-by-layer (LbL) assembly of SWNT with charged polymers, and on the antimicrobial properties of the resultant films. We employ a poly(ethylene glycol) functionalized phospholipid (PL-PEG) to disperse SWNT in aqueous solution, and consider cases where SWNT are dispersed (i) as essentially isolated objects and (ii) as small bundles. Quartz crystal microgravimetry with dissipation (QCMD) and ellipsometry measurements show the bundled SWNT system to adsorb in an unusually strong fashion – with layers twice (when hydrated) and three times (when dried) as thick as those of isolated SWNT. Molecular dynamics simulation reveals a lower PL-PEG density and degree of solution extension on bundled versus isolated SWNT, suggesting thicker adsorbed layers may result from suppressed steric repulsion between bundled nanotubes. Enhanced van der Waals attraction in the bundled system may also play a role. Scanning electron micrographs reveal Escherichia coli on films with bundled SWNT to be essentially engulfed by the nanotubes, whereas the bacteria rest upon films with isolated SWNT. While both systems inactivate 90% of bacteria in 24 h, the bundled SWNT system is “fast-acting,” reaching this inactivation rate in 1 h. This study demonstrates the significant impact of SWNT bundling on LbL assembly and antimicrobial activity, explores the molecular basis of nanotube–nanotube interactions, and demonstrates the possibility of bacteria-engulfing, fast-acting, SWNT-based antimicrobial coatings.

Adequate fate descriptors are crucial input parameters in models used to predict the behaviour and transport of a contaminant in the environment and determine predicted environmental concentrations for risk assessment. When new fate models are being developed for emerging contaminants, such as engineered nanoparticles (ENPs), special care has to be applied in adjusting conventional approaches and fate descriptors to a new set of substances. The aim of this paper is to clarify misconceptions about the applicability of equilibrium partition coefficients, such as the octanol–water partition coefficient (Kow) or the soil–water distribution coefficient (Kd), whose application in the context of ENP fate assessment is frequently suggested despite lacking scientific justification. ENPs are present in the environment as thermodynamically unstable suspensions and their behaviour must be represented by kinetically controlled attachment and deposition processes as has been established by colloid science. Here, we illustrate the underlying theories of equilibrium partitioning and kinetically controlled attachment and discuss why the use of any coefficient based on equilibrium partitioning is inadequate for ENPs and can lead to significant errors in ENP fate predictions and risk assessment., Environmental Science: Nano, 1 (4), ISSN:2051-8153, ISSN:2051-8161

Reverse electrodialysis (RED) can harness the Gibbs free energy of mixing when fresh river water flows into the sea for sustainable power generation. In this study, we carry out a thermodynamic and energy efficiency analysis of RED power generation, and assess the membrane power density. First, we present a reversible thermodynamic model for RED and verify that the theoretical maximum extractable work in a reversible RED process is identical to the Gibbs free energy of mixing. Work extraction in an irreversible process with maximized power density using a constant-resistance load is then examined to assess the energy conversion efficiency and power density. With equal volumes of seawater and river water, energy conversion efficiency of ∼33-44% can be obtained in RED, while the rest is lost through dissipation in the internal resistance of the ion-exchange membrane stack. We show that imperfections in the selectivity of typical ion exchange membranes (namely, co-ion transport, osmosis, and electro-osmosis) can detrimentally lower efficiency by up to 26%, with co-ion leakage being the dominant effect. Further inspection of the power density profile during RED revealed inherent ineffectiveness toward the end of the process. By judicious early discontinuation of the controlled mixing process, the overall power density performance can be considerably enhanced by up to 7-fold, without significant compromise to the energy efficiency. Additionally, membrane resistance was found to be an important factor in determining the power densities attainable. Lastly, the performance of an RED stack was examined for different membrane conductivities and intermembrane distances simulating high performance membranes and stack design. By thoughtful selection of the operating parameters, an efficiency of ∼37% and an overall gross power density of 3.5 W/m2 represent the maximum performance that can potentially be achieved in a seawater-river water RED system with low-resistance ion exchange membranes (0.5 cm2) at very small spacing intervals (50 μm).

This study investigates the fouling behavior and fouling resistance of superhydrophilic thin-film composite forward osmosis membranes functionalized with surface-tailored nanoparticles. Fouling experiments in both forward osmosis and reverse osmosis modes are performed with three model organic foulants: alginate, bovine serum albumin, and Suwannee river natural organic matter. A solution comprising monovalent and divalent salts is employed to simulate the solution chemistry of typical wastewater effluents. Reduced fouling is consistently observed for the superhydrophilic membranes compared to control thin-film composite polyamide membranes, in both reverse and forward osmosis modes. The fouling resistance and cleaning efficiency of the functionalized membranes is particularly outstanding in forward osmosis mode where the driving force for water flux is an osmotic pressure difference. To understand the mechanism of fouling, the intermolecular interactions between the foulants and the membrane surface are analyzed by direct force measurement using atomic force microscopy. Lower adhesion forces are observed for the superhydrophilic membranes compared to the control thin-film composite polyamide membranes. The magnitude and distribution of adhesion forces for the different membrane surfaces suggest that the antifouling properties of the superhydrophilic membranes originate from the barrier provided by the tightly bound hydration layer at their surface, as well as from the neutralization of the native carboxyl groups of thin-film composite polyamide membranes.

Carboxyls are inherent functional groups of thin-film composite polyamide nanofiltration (NF) membranes, which may play a role in membrane performance and fouling. Their surface presence is attributed to incomplete reaction of acyl chloride monomers during the membrane active layer synthesis by interfacial polymerization. In order to unravel the effect of carboxyl group density on organic fouling, NF membranes were fabricated by reacting piperazine (PIP) with either isophthaloyl chloride (IPC) or the more commonly used trimesoyl chloride (TMC). Fouling experiments were conducted with alginate as a model hydrophilic organic foulant in a solution, simulating the composition of municipal secondary effluent. Improved antifouling properties were observed for the IPC membrane, which exhibited lower flux decline (40%) and significantly greater fouling reversibility or cleaning efficiency (74%) than the TMC membrane (51% flux decline and 40% cleaning efficiency). Surface characterization revealed that there was a substantial difference in the density of surface carboxyl groups between the IPC and TMC membranes, while other surface properties were comparable. The role of carboxyl groups was elucidated by measurements of foulant-surface intermolecular forces by atomic force microscopy, which showed lower adhesion forces and rupture distances for the IPC membrane compared to TMC membranes in the presence of calcium ions in solution. Our results demonstrated that a decrease in surface carboxyl group density of polyamide membranes fabricated with IPC monomers can prevent calcium bridging with alginate and, thus, improve membrane antifouling properties.

Thin-film composite polyamide membranes are state-of-the-art materials for membrane-based water purification and desalination processes, which require both high rejection of contaminants and high water permeabilities. However, these membranes are prone to fouling when processing natural waters and wastewaters, because of the inherent surface physicochemical properties of polyamides. The present work demonstrates the fabrication of forward osmosis polyamide membranes with optimized surface properties via facile and scalable functionalization with fine-tuned nanoparticles. Silica nanoparticles are coated with superhydrophilic ligands possessing functional groups that impart stability to the nanoparticles and bind irreversibly to the native carboxyl moieties on the membrane selective layer. The tightly tethered layer of nanoparticles tailors the surface chemistry of the novel composite membrane without altering the morphology or water/solute permeabilities of the membrane selective layer. Surface characterization and interfacial energy analysis confirm that highly hydrophilic and wettable membrane surfaces are successfully attained. Lower intermolecular adhesion forces are measured between the new membrane materials and model organic foulants, indicating the presence of a bound hydration layer at the polyamide membrane surface that creates a barrier for foulant adhesion.

Surface charge plays an important role in membrane-based separations of particulates, macromolecules, and dissolved ionic species. In this study, we present two experimental methods to determine the concentration of negatively charged functional groups at the surface of dense polymeric membranes. Both techniques consist of associating the membrane surface moieties with chemical probes, followed by quantification of the bound probes. Uranyl acetate and toluidine blue O dye, which interact with the membrane functional groups via complexation and electrostatic interaction, respectively, were used as probes. The amount of associated probes was quantified using liquid scintillation counting for uranium atoms and visible light spectroscopy for the toluidine blue dye. The techniques were validated using self-assembled monolayers of alkanethiols with known amounts of charged moieties. The surface density of negatively charged functional groups of hand-cast thin-film composite polyamide membranes, as well as commercial cellulose triacetate and polyamide membranes, was quantified under various conditions. Using both techniques, we measured a negatively charged functional group density of 20–30 nm −2 for the hand-cast thin-film composite membranes. The ionization behavior of the membrane functional groups, determined from measurements with toluidine blue at varying pH, was consistent with published data for thin-film composite polyamide membranes. Similarly, the measured charge densities on commercial membranes were in general agreement with previous investigations. The relative simplicity of the two methods makes them a useful tool for quantifying the surface charge concentration of a variety of surfaces, including separation membranes.

The fouling and subsequent cleaning of RO membranes fouled by a mixture of organic foulants simulating wastewater effluent has been systematically investigated. The organic foulants investigated included alginate, bovine serum albumin (BSA), Suwannee River natural organic matter, and octanoic acid, representing, respectively, polysaccharides, proteins, humic substances, and fatty acids, which are ubiquitous in effluent organic matter. After establishing the fouling behavior and mechanisms with a mixture of organic foulants in the presence and absence of calcium ions, our study focused on the cleaning mechanisms of RO membranes fouled by the mixture of organic foulants. The chemical cleaning agents used included an alkaline solution (NaOH), a metal chelating agent (EDTA), an anionic surfactant (SDS), and a concentrated salt solution (NaCl). Specifically, we examined the impact of cleaning agent type, cleaning solution pH, cleaning time, and fouling layer composition on membrane cleaning efficiency. Foulant–foulant adhesion forces measured under conditions simulating chemical cleaning of a membrane fouled by a mixture of the investigated organic foulants provided insights into the chemical cleaning mechanisms. It was shown that while alkaline solution (NaOH) alone is not effective in disrupting the complexes formed by the organic foulants with calcium, a higher solution pH can lead to effective cleaning if sufficient hydrodynamic shear (provided by crossflow) prevails. Surfactant (SDS), a strong chelating agent (EDTA), and salt solution (NaCl) were effective in cleaning RO membranes fouled by a mixture of foulants, especially if applied at high pH and for longer cleaning times. The observed cleaning efficiencies with the various cleaning agents were consistent with the related measurements of foulant–foulant intermolecular forces. Furthermore, we have shown that an optimal cleaning agent concentration can be derived from a plot presenting the percent reduction in the foulant–foulant adhesion force versus cleaning agent concentration.

Pressure retarded osmosis has the potential to produce renewable energy from natural salinity gradients. This work presents the fabrication of thin-film composite membranes customized for high performance in pressure retarded osmosis. We also present the development of a theoretical model to predict the water flux in pressure retarded osmosis, from which we can predict the power density that can be achieved by a membrane. The model is the first to incorporate external concentration polarization, a performance limiting phenomenon that becomes significant for high-performance membranes. The fabricated membranes consist of a selective polyamide layer formed by interfacial polymerization on top of a polysulfone support layer made by phase separation. The highly porous support layer (structural parameter S = 349 μm), which minimizes internal concentration polarization, allows the transport properties of the active layer to be customized to enhance PRO performance. It is shown that a hand-cast membrane that balances permeability and selectivity (A = 5.81 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1), B = 0.88 L m(-2) h(-1)) is projected to achieve the highest potential peak power density of 10.0 W/m(2) for a river water feed solution and seawater draw solution. The outstanding performance of this membrane is attributed to the high water permeability of the active layer, coupled with a moderate salt permeability and the ability of the support layer to suppress the undesirable accumulation of leaked salt in the porous support. Membranes with greater selectivity (i.e., lower salt permeability, B = 0.16 L m(-2) h(-1)) suffered from a lower water permeability (A = 1.74 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) and would yield a lower peak power density of 6.1 W/m(2), while membranes with a higher permeability and lower selectivity (A = 7.55 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1), B = 5.45 L m(-2) h(-1)) performed poorly due to severe reverse salt permeation, resulting in a similar projected peak power density of 6.1 W/m(2).

The transport properties (adsorption and aggregation behavior) of virus-like particles (VLPs) of two strains of norovirus ("Norwalk" GI.1 and "Houston" GII.4) were studied in a variety of solution chemistries. GI.1 and GII.4 VLPs were found to be stable against aggregation at pH 4.0-8.0. At pH 9.0, GI.1 VLPs rapidly disintegrated. The attachment efficiencies (α) of GI.1 and GII.4 VLPs to silica increased with increasing ionic strength in NaCl solutions at pH 8.0. The attachment efficiency of GI.1 VLPs decreased as pH was increased above the isoelectric point (pH 5.0), whereas at and below the isoelectric point, the attachment efficiency was erratic. Ca(2+) and Mg(2+) dramatically increased the attachment efficiencies of GI.1 and GII.4 VLPs, which may be due to specific interactions with the VLP capsids. Bicarbonate decreased attachment efficiencies for both GI.1 and GII.4 VLPs, whereas phosphate decreased the attachment efficiency of GI.1, while increasing GII.4 attachment efficiency. The observed differences in GI.1 and GII.4 VLP attachment efficiencies in response to solution chemistry may be attributed to differential responses of the unique arrangement of exposed amino acid residues on the capsid surface of each VLP strain.

International audience; We provide the first direct evidence that highly purified single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) exhibit strong antimicrobial activity. By using a pristine SWNT with a narrow diameter distribution, we demonstrate that cell membrane damage resulting from direct contact with SWNT aggregates is the likely mechanism leading to bacterial cell death. This finding may be useful in the application of SWNTs as building blocks for antimicrobial materials.

The influence of bacterial growth stage and the evolution of surface macromolecules on cell adhesion have been examined by using a mutant of Escherichia coli K-12. To better understand the adhesion kinetics of bacteria in the mid-exponential and stationary growth phases under flow conditions, deposition experiments were conducted in a well-controlled radial stagnation point flow (RSPF) system. Complementary cell characterization techniques were conducted in combination with the RSPF experiments to evaluate the hydrophobicity, electrophoretic mobility, size, and titratable surface charge of the cells in the two growth phases considered. It was observed that cells in stationary phase were notably more adhesive than those in mid-exponential phase. This behavior is attributed to the high degree of local charge heterogeneity on the outer membranes of stationary-phase cells, which results in decreased electrostatic repulsion between the cells and a quartz surface. The mid-exponential-phase cells, on the other hand, have a more uniform charge distribution on the outer membrane, resulting in greater electrostatic repulsion and, subsequently, less adhesion. Our results suggest that the macromolecules responsible for this phenomenon are outer membrane-bound proteins and lipopolysaccharide-associated functional groups.

The removal mechanisms of four natural steroid hormones-estradiol, estrone, testosterone, and progesterone-by nanofiltration (NF) membranes were investigated. Two nanofiltration membranes with quite different permeabilities and salt retention characteristics were utilized. To better understand hormone removal mechanisms, the membrane average pore size was determined from retention data of inert organic solutes of various molecular weights and a pore transport model that incorporates steric (size) exclusion and hindered convection and diffusion. Results indicate that, at the early stages of filtration, adsorption (or partitioning) of hormones to the membrane polymer is the dominant removal mechanism. Because the adsorptive capacity of the membrane is limited, the final retention stabilizes when the adsorption of hormones into the membrane polymer has reached equilibrium. At this later filtration stage, the overall hormone retention is lower than that expected based solely on the size exclusion mechanism. This behavior is attributed to partitioning and subsequent diffusion of hormone molecules in the membrane polymeric phase, which ultimately results in a lower retention. Hormone diffusion in the membrane polymeric matrix most likely depends on the size of the hormone molecule, hydrogen bonding of hormones to membrane functional groups, and hydrophobic interactions of the hormone with the membrane polymeric matrix.

Van der Waals and electrostatic double layer interactions between two colloidal particles are evaluated from the corresponding interaction energies per unit area between two infinite flat plates using a recently developed technique, the surface element integration. Application of the technique to two interacting spheres results in predictions of interaction energies that are substantially more accurate compared to the predictions based on conventional Derjaguin's approximation. The superior results of the technique compared to Derjaguin’s approximation are attributed to the more rigorous consideration of particle curvature effects in the surface element integration technique.
