Purpose: Meeting "others," especially so-called "local" students, is usually seen as a sign of success for intercultural learning and integration in research on study abroad and internationalization of higher education. Previous studies have focused on how international students themselves describe their (mis-)encounters. In this article, the authors consider lecturers' voices about this phenomenon. Lecturers have an influence on the students' experiences since they spend a lot of time together in and outside class. Design/Approach/Methods: Using a thematic analysis and social network analysis of interview data with lecturers, and a critical perspective toward the dichotomy of "local" versus "international" students, a university in Finland, a popular destination thanks to its positive image in global education, serves as a case study. Findings: The article identifies privileges, limits, and (missed) opportunities of encounters, as shared by the lecturers in focus group discussions. Furthermore, the lecturers created hierarchies in the way they described the encounters between different kinds of students. Some signs of pluralizing both local and international students were also found in some lecturers' discourses. Originality/Value: The article ends with recommendations for institutions regarding the lecturers' problematic role of gatekeepers in student encounters and the limiting categories used in institutions of higher education to refer to students.

The rotation maize and dry bean provides the main food supply of smallholder farmers in Honduras. Crop model assessment of climate change impacts (2070–2099 compared to a 1961–1990 baseline) on a maize–dry bean rotation for several sites across a range of climatic zones and elevations in Honduras. Low productivity systems, together with an uncertain future climate, pose a high level of risk for food security. The cropping systems simulation dynamic model CropSyst was calibrated and validated upon field trail site at Zamorano, then run with baseline and future climate scenarios based upon general circulation models (GCM) and the ClimGen synthetic daily weather generator. Results indicate large uncertainty in crop production from various GCM simulations and future emissions scenarios, but generally reduced yields at low elevations by 0 % to 22 % in suitable areas for crop production and increased yield at the cooler, on the hillsides, where farming needs to reduce soil erosion with conservation techniques. Further studies are needed to investigate strategies to reduce impacts and to explore adaptation tactics.

Internationalization at home (IaH) policies in higher education institutions (HEIs) are rarely negotiated with and by students. Therefore, students' takes on such policies could be missed opportunities for HEIs. This qualitative study investigates international and local students' negotiations and meaning-making of integration and IaH as stated by institutional policies. The data consist of online forum entries and reports from small group discussions between 40 students in English medium master's programs in Finland (Europe). The key concepts of ideology and imaginary serve as entries into data analysis, which consists of enunciative discourse analysis. The findings indicate a perceived hierarchy of mutual but not equal integration between university staff, local and international students. Furthermore, the categories of 'international as guests' and 'local students as hosts' are challenged by the participants. Local students are considered as 'guests with more privilege' and international students as 'guests with less opportunities'. The responsibility to achieve IaH goals is perceived to be unequally distributed among these actors. Practical implications include reconsidering the categories of 'international' and 'local' students and how IaH policies could share the responsibilities to achieve their goals more equally among students and staff.

It involves the participation of several experts along the country, following the GRADE system. To estimate predicted ground motion from a teleseismic slip model, we use a low- and high-frequency hybrid method to simulate the regional, strong ground motions observed following the 18 April 2014 moment magnitude (MW) 7.3 Papanoa, Mexico, earthquake. To generate the regional ground motion at low frequencies (<1 Hz), a teleseismically derived, finite-fault, kinematic model is used to define the earthquake source, taking into account slip-model variations identified with a parameter sampling approach that considers possible errors in the fault geometry, the hypocenter depth, and the rupture velocity. A 3D crustal model is used to calculate the low-frequency ground motions using a finite-element calculation that includes topography and considers variations in the source model to estimate the uncertainty in the calculations. High frequencies (>1 Hz) are added using a 1D full-wave propagation code that estimates uncertainties by considering multiple random distributions of slip with different spatial correlation lengths. The synthetic, broadband (0.05-10.0 Hz) ground motions are obtained by combining the low- and high-frequency portions match filtered at 1 Hz. These synthetic ground motions are compared with the regional observations using velocity records, peak ground acceleration, and medians of the orientation-independent response spectra of the horizontal components (RotD50) calculated at periods of 0.2, 0.3, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.5, and 10.0 s. The results indicate that ground motions estimated at these periods using our hybrid approach based primarily on a teleseismically derived source model are comparable to the values observed for the 2014 Papanoa earthquake at regional distances. The approach could be used to estimate strong-motion spectral levels expected for regions with limited local and regional recordings and could also fill in magnitude or distance gaps in ground-motion prediction relations utilized in the assessment of seismic hazard. The treatment of arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AAION), non-arteritic ischemic optic neuropathy (NAAION), and posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (PION) is a topic of ongoing research with mixed evidence on some pharmacotherapies and a need for more consensus. This manuscript provides an overview of these conditions' current, potential future, and attempted pharmacotherapies. AAION's current treatment regimen consists of high-dose steroids, with methotrexate, tocilizumab, and abatacept, being the most viable steroid-sparing therapy candidates. As for NAAION, the treatments being tried are vast, with mixed evidence supporting each modality. Similarly, despite the various treatment options explored, there still needs to be a universally effective therapy for PION. Ipconazole is an antifungal agrochemical widely used in agriculture against seed diseases of rice, vegetables, and other crops; due to its easy accumulation in the environment, it poses a hazard to human, animal, and environmental health. Therefore, we investigated the cytotoxic effect of ipconazole on SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells using cell viability tests (MTT), ROS production, caspase3/7 activity, and molecular assays of the biomarkers of cell death (Bax, Casp3, APAF1, BNIP3, and Bcl2); inflammasome (NLRP3, Casp1, and IL1β); inflammation (NFκB, TNFα, and IL6); and antioxidants (NRF2, SOD, and GPx). SH-SY5Y cells were exposed to ipconazole (1, 5, 10, 20, 50, and 100 µM) for 24 h. The ipconazole, in a dose-dependent manner, reduced cell viability and produced an IC50 of 32.3 µM; it also produced an increase in ROS production and caspase3/7 enzyme activity in SH-SY5Y cells. In addition, ipconazole at 50 µM induced an overexpression of Bax, Casp3, APAF1, and BNIP3 (cell death genes); NLRP3, Casp1, and IL1B (inflammasome complex genes); and NFκB, TNFα, and IL6 (inflammation genes); it also reduced the expression of NRF2, SOD, and GPx (antioxidant genes). Our results show that ipconazole produces cytotoxic effects by reducing cell viability, generating oxidative stress, and inducing cell death in SH-SY5Y cells, so ipconazole exposure should be considered as a factor in the presentation of neurotoxicity or neurodegeneration.

Objective To investigate the risk of DM and evaluate the impact of SLE therapies on the risk of developing DM in patients with SLE. Methods Electronic database searches of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were performed from inception to February 2023. Cohort and cross-sectional studies that analysed the risk of DM in patients with SLE were included. The associations between diabetes and antirheumatic agents, such as antimalarials and glucocorticoids, were analysed in cohort studies. Data were pooled using fixed- or random-effects meta-analysis to estimate pooled odd ratios (OR), relative risks (RR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). This study was registered with PROSPERO (CRD42023402774). Results A total of 37 studies (23 cross-sectional and 14 cohort studies) involving 266 537 patients with SLE were included. The pooled analyses from cross-sectional studies and cohort studies did not show an increased risk of DM in SLE patients (OR = 1.05, 95% CI 0.87–1.27; P  = 0.63 and RR = 1.32, 95% CI 0.93–1.87; P  = 0.12, respectively). However, several cohort studies consistently demonstrated a reduced risk of diabetes with antimalarials, while glucocorticoid use has been associated with an increased risk of developing diabetes. Age, sex, hypertension and immunosuppressants have not been identified as risk factors for DM in SLE patients. Conclusion Although there was no increased risk of DM in patients with SLE compared with controls, HCQ users or adherents had a decreased risk, whereas glucocorticoid users had an increased risk. Introduction: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease that often requires hospitalization. Most hospitalizations are due to infections and/or disease activity, for which several risk factors have been described in non-Mestizo patients. Objective: To identify risk factors for hospitalization in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Methods: This was an observational case-control study of patients with SLE in San Luis Potosí, Mexico, evaluated from January 2019 to October 2020. We compared hospitalized lupus patients with non-hospitalized lupus patients. We used descriptive statistics and logistic regression to describe potential risk factors. Results: Of a total of 202 patients, 89 (45.1%) were hospitalized; these patients were younger, had shorter disease duration, higher disease activity scores (systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity index-SLEDAI), and more accumulated damage than non-hospitalized patients. The primary reasons for hospitalization were disease activity (60.7%), kidney disease, infection, and drug toxicity (5.6%). Multivariate analysis revealed several risk factors associated with hospitalization, including elevated creatinine, C-reactive protein, neutrophil levels, and constitutional symptoms, while prolonged international normalized ratio (INR), longer stay in the intensive care unit (ICU), and vasopressor use were associated with mortality. The use of antimalarials was a protective factor against hospitalization. Survival analysis revealed that patients with hospital-acquired infections had a lower probability of survival. Conclusions: Disease activity was the most common reason for hospitalization; kidney, constitutional, and hematological factors were associated with hospitalization; and the use of antimalarial was a protective factor for hospitalization. Este ensayo propone una relectura de Facundo como objeto sublime que nos interpela desde su exceso y su resistencia a agotarse. La pluralidad contradictoria de significados que Sarmiento adscribe al espacio y al protagonista de su obra se expresa a través del lenguaje afectivo de la fascinación, el asombro, el miedo y el terror. Mi primer objetivo consiste en analizar esta afectividad negativa presente en las descripciones de la percepción del desierto, así como en la violencia que la fuerza y el terror de Facundo ejercen sobre el régimen mimético de la obra. Mi segundo objetivo es demostrar cómo Sarmiento se aproxima a estas dos realidades excesivas a partir de una retórica de lo sublime en la que ambos entran en contacto de manera estratégica para representar la dicotomía entre civilización y barbarie. Finalmente, propongo analizar los dispositivos retóricos que Sarmiento activa por medio de lo sublime como práctica representacional con la que proyecta superar no solo los obstáculos que le presentan el exceso del espacio y el terror del gaucho, sino también la pobreza de los medios materiales de la nación. Purpose: This study aims to provide valuable insights for stakeholders in Puerto Nariño, Amazonas enabling them to develop strategies tailored to their needs. Particularly, it assessed the sustainability of indigenous tourism initiatives in the municipality of Puerto Nariño, Amazonas. Design/Methodology/Approach: This qualitative study involved pioneering indigenous family tourism initiatives and a sustainability framework with a set of 12 sustainability indicators to explore the perceptions of tourism service providers. Convenience sampling was used to collect data through questionnaires. Findings: According to the findings, families are aware of the advantages of tourist activities with the culture-society component having the highest average score (3.13/5.00). However, it can be inferred that factors encompassing economic, governance and environmental dimensions such as employment and income generation (average 2.00/5.00), encouragement and convening spaces to promote participatory community decision-making mechanisms (average 1.75/5.00), reliable energy supply and enhancing knowledge of local wildlife, vegetation and sporting activities (average 1.70/5.00) remain critical in this indigenous context. Additionally, the initiative's governance component has been evaluated as having the lowest average (2.19/5.00). Practical Implications: These findings contribute to the existing body of knowledge on ecotourism practices in indigenous settings particularly in South American ethnic communities.
