Abstract Aiming at the problem that traditional methods are difficult to fully utilize the rich spectral information in hyperspectral images (HSI) and fail to capture the complex higher‐order relations in hyperspectral data, which leads to limited classification performance extreme learning machine and fails to further improve the classification accuracy of HSIs, the authors propose the hypergraph convolutional extreme learning machine (HGCELM) method. The method not only inherits all the advantages of extreme learning machine (ELM), but also embeds hypergraph convolution for feature selection, which is capable of handling higher‐order relations. This enables HGCELM to capture more complex relationships between nodes and provide richer representation capabilities. At the same time, the training speed advantage of ELM is retained, thus speeding up the model training process. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better accuracy compared to other clustering algorithms.

Abstract Spindle-shaped waves of oscillations emerge in EEG scalp recordings during human and rodent non-REM sleep. The association of these 10–16 Hz oscillations with events during prior wakefulness suggests a role in memory consolidation. Human and rodent depth electrodes in the brain record strong spindles throughout the cortex and hippocampus, with possible origins in the thalamus. However, the source and targets of the spindle oscillations from the hippocampus are unclear. Here, we employed an in vitro reconstruction of four subregions of the hippocampal formation with separate microfluidic tunnels for single axon communication between subregions assembled on top of a microelectrode array. We recorded spontaneous 400–1000 ms long spindle waves at 10–16 Hz in single axons passing between subregions as well as from individual neurons in those subregions. Spindles were nested within slow waves. The highest amplitudes and most frequent occurrence suggest origins in CA3 neurons that send feed-forward axons into CA1 and feedback axons into DG. Spindles had 50–70% slower conduction velocities than spikes and were not phase-locked to spikes suggesting that spindle mechanisms are independent of action potentials. Therefore, consolidation of declarative-cognitive memories in the hippocampus may be separate from the more easily accessible consolidation of memories related to thalamic motor function.

Nonwoven fabric defect detection is an essential part of the production process, and it is important to realize fast and accurate nonwoven fabric defect detection to improve production efficiency. Aiming at the problems of nonwoven fabric defect detection in which most defect targets are small and traditional industrial cameras are unable to recognize foreign impurities of the same color, a nonwoven fabric defect detection method based on hyperspectral imaging and improved YOLOv5 is proposed. Specifically, hyperspectral imaging technology is used to replace traditional vision and solve the problem of homochromatic foreign matter impurities from the dimension of spectrum. In addition, the LSK attention module is introduced into the YOLOv5 backbone network, which enables the network to learn the key feature information and enhance the detection of small targets. Finally, an improved light repetitive group frequency permutation network (Light-RepGFPN) is proposed in the neck structure, by which the feature fusion capability of the model is enhanced, so that the high-level semantic information and the low-level spatial information are fully fused to improve the detection accuracy. Combined with the LSK and Light-RepGFPN modules, we propose an improved YOLOv5 (LL-YOLOv5) defect detection network. It is experimentally proved that LL-YOLOv5 can achieve an average accuracy mean 90.3% in the nonwoven fabric hyperspectral image defects dataset, which is 2.2% higher than that of the original model, respectively.

Yellowhorn (Xanthoceras sorbifolium), especially its varieties, is the red petal yellowhorn (X. sorbifolium var. purpurea), an important tree species with great ornamental value, and its flower petals change color throughout the flowering period. In this study, we mainly focused on the mechanism of the petal color change with transcriptomics and metabolomics data. A phased chromosome-scale assembly of the red petal yellowhorn genome was generated using the PacBio high-fidelity reads, Illumina short reads, and Phase genomics Proximo Hi-C data. The final de novo assembly yielded 533.67 Mb with a contig N50 of 5.42 Mb, and 27 501 protein-coding genes were predicted. Notably, an alternate haplotig assembly was also obtained. Furthermore, a variation database for the alleles within the genome was constructed. Subsequently, the expression pattern of flower pigmentation-related genes and allelic expression imbalance events were investigated. Apart from 6 genes involved in the anthocyanin biosynthesis pathway regulated by the activation of 15 MYB-bHLH-WD40s, the increased expression of senescence-related gene 1 (SRG1) and 2-oxoglutarate-dependent dioxygenase (DIOX5) might also result in decreasing content of lutein and increasing abundance of (E/Z)-phytoene, cyanidin-3-O-rutinoside, and cyanidin-3-O-sambubioside. These changes in genes and metabolites were most likely related to the petal color change in red petal yellowhorn. This phased chromosome-scale genome assembly provides more accurate genomic information for future molecular breeding and facilitates allele function studies of the red petal yellowhorn.

Patrinia scabiosaefolia, is used as wild vegetable in China for more than 2 000 years, with a variety of pharmacological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-tumor and hypoglycemic. Based on our ongoing research on chemical constituents and hypoglycemic activity of P. scabiosaefolia, 4 lignan compounds, (+)-isolariciresinol (1), 7R,7'R,8S,8'S-(+)-neo-olivil-4-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (2), 4-O-methylcedrusin (3) and patrinian A (4), were isolated and identified. The hypoglycemic activity showed that compounds 2 and 3 could extremely significantly improve insulin resistance at 100 (P < 0.001), 50 (P < 0.001) and 25 µmol/L (P < 0.01) in IR 3T3-L1 cells. While compound 4 only promoted glucose uptake by IR 3T3-L1 cells at 100 µmol/L (P < 0.01). Western blotting experiments showed that compounds 2 and 4 up-regulated the protein expressions of p-IRS, PI-3K, p-AKT and glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4), and promoted the transcription of GLUT4 mRNA. Therefore, the mechanisms of compounds 2 and 4 were presumed to improve IR by activating PI-3K/AKT signaling pathway.

After implantation, complex and highly specialized molecular events render functionally distinct organ formation, whereas how the epigenome shapes organ-specific development remains to be fully elucidated. Here, nano-hmC-Seal, RNA bisulfite sequencing (RNA-BisSeq), and RNA sequencing (RNA-Seq) were performed, and the first multilayer landscapes of DNA 5-hydroxymethylcytosine (5hmC) and RNA 5-methylcytosine (m5C) epigenomes were obtained in the heart, kidney, liver, and lung of the human foetuses at 13–28 weeks with 123 samples in total. We identified 70,091 and 503 organ- and stage-specific differentially hydroxymethylated regions (DhMRs) and m5C-modified mRNAs, respectively. The key transcription factors (TFs), T-box transcription factor 20 (TBX20), paired box 8 (PAX8), krueppel-like factor 1 (KLF1), transcription factor 21 (TCF21), and CCAAT enhancer binding protein beta (CEBPB), specifically contribute to the formation of distinct organs at different stages. Additionally, 5hmC-enriched Alu elements may participate in the regulation of expression of TF-targeted genes. Our integrated studies reveal a putative essential link between DNA modification and RNA methylation, and illustrate the epigenetic maps during human foetal organogenesis, which provide a foundation for for an in-depth understanding of the epigenetic mechanisms underlying early development and birth defects.

The research on high-precision and all-scenario localization using the millimeter-wave (mmWave) band is of great urgency. Due to the characteristics of mmWave, blockages make the localization task more complex. This paper proposes a cooperative localization system among user equipment (UEs) assisted by reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs), which considers device-to-device (D2D) communication. RISs are used as anchor points, and position estimation is achieved through signal exchanges between UEs. Firstly, we establish a localization model based on this system and derive the UEs’ positioning error bound (PEB) as a performance metric. Then, a UE-RIS joint beamforming design is proposed to optimize channel state information (CSI) with the objective of achieving the minimum PEB. Finally, simulation analysis demonstrates the advantages of the proposed scheme over RIS-assisted base station positioning, achieving centimeter-level accuracy with a 10 dBm lower transmission power.

Schizophrenia classification and abnormal brain network recognition have an important research significance. Researchers have proposed many classification methods based on machine learning and deep learning. However, fewer studies utilized the advantages of complementary information from multi feature to learn the best representation of schizophrenia. In this study, we proposed a multi-feature fusion network (MFFN) using functional network connectivity (FNC) and time courses (TC) to distinguish schizophrenia patients from healthy controls. DNN backbone was adopted to learn the feature map of functional network connectivity, C-RNNAM backbone was designed to learn the feature map of time courses, and Deep SHAP was applied to obtain the most discriminative brain networks. We proved the effectiveness of this proposed model using the combining two public datasets and evaluated this model quantitatively using the evaluation indexes. The results showed that the functional network connectivity generated by independent component analysis has advantage in schizophrenia classification by comparing static and dynamic functional connections. This method obtained the best classification accuracy (ACC=87.30%, SPE=89.28%, SEN=85.71%, F1 =88.23%, and AUC=0.9081), and it demonstrated the superiority of this proposed model by comparing state-of-the-art methods. Ablation experiment also demonstrated that multi feature fusion and attention module can improve classification accuracy. The most discriminative brain networks showed that default mode network and visual network of schizophrenia patients have aberrant connections in brain networks. In conclusion, this method can identify schizophrenia effectively and visualize the abnormal brain network, and it has important clinical application value.

Non-invasive ultrasound neuromodulation (USNM) is a powerful tool to explore neural circuits and treat neurological disorders. Due to the heterogeneity of the skull and regional variations in modulation and treatment objectives, it is necessary to develop an efficient and spatially controllable neuromodulation approach. Recently, transcranial focused ultrasound (tFUS) combined with external biomicro/nanomaterials for brain stimulation has garnered significant attention. This study focused on tFUS combined with perfluoropentane (PFP) nanodroplets (NDs) to improve the efficacy and spatial controllability of USNM. The developed two-stage variable pulse tFUS sequence that include the acoustic droplet vaporization (ADV) pulse for vaporizing PFP NDs into microbubbles (MBs) and the USNM sequence for inducing mechanical oscillations of the formed MBs to enhance neuronal activity. Further, adjusting the acoustic pressure of the ADV pulse generated the controllable vaporization regions, thereby achieving spatially controllable neuromodulation. The results showed that the mean densities of c-fos+ cells expression in the group of PFP NDs with ADV (109 ± 19 cells/mm2) were significantly higher compared to the group without ADV (37.34 ± 8.24 cells/mm2). The acoustic pressure of the ADV pulse with 1.98 MPa and 2.81 MPa in vitro generated the vaporization regions of 0.146 ± 0.032 cm2 and 0.349 ± 0.056 cm2, respectively. Under the same stimulation conditions, a larger vaporization region was also obtained with higher acoustic pressure in vivo, inducing a broader region of neuronal activation. Therefore, this study will serve as a valuable reference for developing the efficient and spatially controllable tFUS neuromodulation strategy.

Abstract Micro‐precision glass insulated terminal (MPGI‐Terminal) is a high‐precision and widely used micro‐precision component. The MPGI‐Terminal is small in size with 2–5 mm in diameter. It is difficult to distinguish missing blocks on the surface during manual inspection, which is prone to false detection and missing detection. The advantages of deep learning methods in the field of object detection have gradually highlighted. They can be used to construct the missing block detection model of MPGI‐Terminal. A Max‐Min Intersection over Union (MIoU) loss function based on overlap area, distance and aspect ratio is proposed, which helps the model to perform bounding box regression more reasonably, so as to obtain the object position more accurately. In addition, the Spatial Attention Module (SAM) and the Region of Interest Alignment (RoI Align) module are introduced to further improve the model performance. Based on the above modules, a MPGI‐Terminal missing block detection model based on M‐FRCNN is constructed. The results show that the proposed model can meet the requirements of fast and high accuracy of MPGI‐Terminal missing block detection.

Abstract An occlusal veneer is an ultrathin restoration method and a minimally invasive approach that can preserve more dental tissue and provide better aesthetic outcomes, thus increasing patient satisfaction; however, no previous studies reported on treating cracked teeth using occlusal veneer. Accordingly, we described the diagnosis and treatment process of a cracked tooth using occlusal veneer in a single case. A 29‐year‐old male presented at our dental clinic complaining of biting pain in the mandibular molar on the right‐hand side. A routine oral examination with radiography was performed to evaluate the oral condition and treatment planning. The #16 tooth had a crack line surrounding the whole distal–lingual cusp from the occlusal surface. After discussing various therapeutic options with the patient, an occlusal veneer was performed. One week after treatment with occlusal veneer, the patient had no complaints. A 14‐month follow‐up showed promising clinical and radiographic outcomes. Occlusal veneer is an alternative treatment option for a cracked tooth, as it can preserve more dental tissue and potentially save pulp vitality.

As a π-conjugated conductive polymer, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) is recognized as a promising environmentally friendly thermoelectric material. However, its low conductivity has limited applications in the thermoelectric field. Although thermoelectric efficiency can be significantly enhanced through post-treatment doping, these processes often involve environmentally harmful organic solvents or reagents. In this study, a novel and environmentally benign method using purified water (including room temperature water and subsequent warm water) to treat PEDOT:PSS film has been developed, resulting in improved thermoelectric performance. The morphology data, chemical composition, molecular structure, and thermoelectric performance of the films before and after treatment were characterized and analyzed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectrum, XRD pattern, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and a thin film thermoelectric measurement system. The results demonstrate that the water treatment effectively removes nonconductive PSS from PEDOT:PSS composites, significantly enhancing their conductivity. Treated films exhibit improved thermoelectric properties, particularly those treated only 15 times with room temperature water, achieving a high electrical conductivity of 62.91 S/cm, a Seebeck coefficient of 14.53 μV K−1, and an optimal power factor of 1.3282 µW·m–1·K–2. In addition, the subsequent warm water treatment can further enhance the thermoelectric properties of the film sample. The underlying mechanism of these improvements is also discussed.

In this paper, principal component analysis is introduced to form a scene-based nonuniformity correction method for infrared focal plane arrays. The estimation of the gain and offset of the infrared detector and the correction of nonuniformity based on the neural network method with a novel estimation of desired target value are achieved concurrently. The current frame and several adjacent registered frames are decomposed onto a set of principal components, and then the first principal component is extracted to construct the desired target value. It is practical, forms fewer ghosting artifacts, and considerably promotes correction precision. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the proposed method presents excellent performance when dealing with clean infrared data with synthetic pattern noise as well as the real infrared video sequence.

In this paper, based on the idea of “step-by-step accuracy”, a novel multiscale feature-based infrared ship-detection method (MSFISD) is proposed. The proposed method can achieve efficient and effective infrared ship detection in complex scenarios, which may provide assistance in applications such as night surveillance. First, candidate regions (CRs) are extracted from the whole image by extracting the sea–sky line and region of interest (ROI). The real sea–sky line is extracted based on the gradient features enhanced by large-scale gradient operators. The coarse segmentation results are obtained by the optimization method and are then refined by incorporating the edge features of the ship to reduce false alarms and obtain the CRs. Second, by analyzing the shape features of ships, the feature quantity is established, and the ships in CRs are finally accurately segmented. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with the other five methods, the proposed method has higher detection accuracy with a lower false-alarm rate and performs better in complex sea scenarios.

In infrared images of the sea surface, apart from the complex background of the sea surface, there are often sky and island backgrounds. The disturbances caused by sea wind and the reflection of intense sunlight on the sea surface increase the complexity of the background, which seriously hinders the detection of targets. To achieve the detection of dark-polarity ship targets in such environments, a dual-channel threshold segmentation method based on local low-gray region detection and geometric features judgment is proposed in this paper. In one channel, adaptive threshold segmentation is performed on the low-gray regions of the acquired image and combined with geometric features to obtain a finer segmentation result. In the other channel, adaptive segmentation is performed on the preprocessed image, and potential backgrounds that may be finely segmented as targets are filtered out based on an area threshold. Finally, the results of the two channels are multiplied and fused to obtain an accurate segmentation result. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms the comparison algorithm in subjective and objective evaluations. The proposed algorithm in this paper not only achieves a low false alarm rate but also exhibits a higher detection rate, and the average detection rate in the test sequence surpasses 95%.

AbstractCatheter-related bloodstream infection (CRBSI) has become the bacterial infection of special concern considerably causing the prolonged hospitalization and the delayed clinical treatment. In this paper, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were stabilized in sodium polyethylene sulfonate (PVS) solution (PVS-Ag). Amphiphilic bio-carbon particles (ACPs) were synthesized from S. cerevisiae cells and employed as the matrix. Chitosan (CS) modification on ACPs (ACPs-CS) facilitated the PVS-Ag grafting with stability and efficiency. Results of morphologic analysis indicated that CS and PVS-Ag modification distinctly changed the morphological-structural properties of the ACPs surface. Surface potentials of ACPs, ACPs-CS and the obtained functionalized bio-carbon material (ACPs-CS-PVS-Ag) were −38.0 mV, +36.1 mV and −53.1 mV, respectively, revealing that the anionic groups enriched on the PVS-Ag surface had largely consumed the amino groups around the surface of ACPs-CS. Results from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) further demonstrated that AgNPs had successfully attached to the ACPs-CS surface. The anionic amphiphiles (ACPs-CS-PVS-Ag) exerted high blood-compatibility and bio-safety, especially the broad-spectrum antibacterial property at the microgram scale. In conclusion, the ACPs-CS-PVS-Ag assembly has potential value in the development of biomedical devices and/or implants for the safe-and-effective elimination of bacterial infections.

Abstract Background MicroRNAs (MiRNAs) are known to participate in preadipocyte differentiation, but the manner in which miR-146a-5p participates in this process remains unclear. This study was performed to examine the participation of miR-146a-5p in 3T3-L1 cell differentiation. Material and Methods miR-146a-5p expression was upregulated and down-regulated to examine effects on 3T3-L1 cell differentiation. Bioinformatics analysis was performed to predict its target genes, and the signaling pathway it regulates was identified by qRT-PCR and Western blotting. The expression of miR-146a-5p in epididymal adipose tissue from obese mice and in an obese mouse adipose cell model was examined by qRT-PCR. Results 3T3-L1 cells differentiated into mature adipocytes successfully, as verified by increased areas of intracellular lipid droplets and elevated expression of mature adipocyte markers, and these cells had elevated miR-146a-5p expression. The intracellular lipid droplet and triglyceride contents and the expression of mature adipocyte markers were significantly increased in miR-146a-5p–overexpressing 3T3-L1 cells and markedly decreased in miR-146a-5p–inhibited 3T3-L1 cells. ErbB4 was a predicted target gene of miR-146a-5p. In miR-146a-5p–overexpressing 3T3-L1 cells, ErbB4 expression and ERK1/2 phosphorylation were decreased and the expression of PPAR-γ was increased; the opposite was observed in miR-146a-5p–inhibited 3T3-L1 cells. In addition, miR-146a-5p expression was significantly increased in the mouse epididymal adipose tissue and adipose cell model. Conclusions Upregulated miR-146a-5p expression was related to 3T3-L1 cell differentiation. MiR-146a-5p promoted 3T3-L1 cell differentiation by targeting ErbB4 and via the ERK1/2/PPAR-γ signaling pathway.

ABSTRACT: Flexible photodetectors (PDs) comprised of low-dimensional organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites with perovskite quantum dots are expected to be the next generation wearable optoelectronic devices. A flexible Vis-NIR PD which contains 2D Dion-Jacobson (DJ) perovskite (4AMP)(MA)2Pb3I10 (4AMP = 4-(aminomethyl)piperidinium, MA = methylammonium) (n3) and micro concentration of CsPbI3 perovskite quantum dots (QDs) layered heterostructures was designed and synthesized in the current work. Controlled by the optimal concentration of QDs, the device response under 660 nm light was increased to 615%. The device combination as per mass of QDs exhibited strong photosensitivity and high-power output. The band gap between the two is minimal, which formed a matching structure and lowered the energy barrier of carrier transport process. QDs layer filled the gap of perovskite film, forming an almost defect-free heterostructure. QDs layer isolated water and passivated the perovskite layer, which therefore contributed to the high-performance of optoelectronic devices. Under the optimal concentration of QDs with up to 5000 bending cycles and different bending angles, the degradation of PDscouldbe ignored, and the devices tended to show a self-healing phenomenon with increasing bending cycles. The optimized strategy will be conducive to developing flexible, wearable, high-performance and low-cost PDs.

Weeds were one of the most destructive constraints on crop production and posed a significant threat to agricultural productivity. The increasing development of smart agriculture promoted the innovation and development of precise weed control techniques. With the application of deep learning in agriculture, more and more emerging technologies have been applied to weed identification. This paper reviewed recent emerging technologies based on deep learning in weed detection. First, the definition, development, and application of technologies such as transfer learning, neural architecture search, domain adaptation, knowledge distillation, and generative adjunctive neural networks are effectively summarized and explained. Next, specific cases of new technologies to solve the challenges in the field of early weed identification are provided. Finally, the technical challenges and possible future roadmap for emerging technologies are discussed and proposed. Collaboration between emerging technologies would become a more attractive development direction than upgrading single technologies in this roadmap. This review would provide a timely field survey and attract more researchers to address this interdisciplinary research issue.

Reference genes are important for the accuracy of gene expression profiles using reverse-transcription quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR). However, there are no available reference genes reported for Sclerotium rolfsii; it actually has a pretty diverse and wide host range. In this study, seven candidate reference genes (UBC, β-TUB, 28S, 18S, PGK, EF1α and GAPDH) were validated for their expression stability in S. rolfsii under conditions of different developmental stages, populations, fungicide treatments, photoperiods and pHs. Four algorithm programs (geNorm, Normfinder, Bestkeeper and ΔCt) were used to evaluate the gene expression stability, and RefFinder was used to integrate the ranking results of four programs. Two reference genes were recommended by RefFinder for RT-qPCR normalization in S. rolfsii. The suitable reference genes were GAPDH and UBC across developmental stages, PGK and UBC across populations, GAPDH and PGK across fungicide treatments, EF1α and PGK across photoperiods, β-TUB and EF1α across pHs and PGK and GAPDH across all samples. Four target genes (atrB, PacC, WC1 and CAT) were selected for the validation of the suitability of selected reference genes. However, using one or two reference genes in combination to normalize the expression of target genes showed no significant difference in S. rolfsii. In short, this study provided reliable reference genes for studying the expression and function of genes in S. rolfsii.

Copper (Cu)-based materials are widely used in many fields from industry to life, including marine, medical apparatus and instruments, and microelectronic devices owing to their superior thermal, electrical, and mechanical properties. However, the interaction of copper with aggressive and fouling liquids under normal circumstances easily brings about severe bacterial accumulation, resulting in undesirable functionality degeneration and bacterial infections. In this contribution, we reported a novel copper-based sponge, polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)@graphdiyne (GDY)@Cu, constructed by in situ synthesis of GDY on a commercial Cu sponge, followed by the modification of PDMS. The as-fabricated PDMS@GDY@Cu sponge not only possesses excellent self-cleaning activity against the pollution of daily drinks and dirt due to an improved static contact angle (~136°), but also display a remarkably enhanced anticorrosion performance, attributed to intimate coverage of chemically stable GDY and PDMS on the Cu sponge. Based on high photothermal effect of GDY, the PDMS@GDY@Cu sponge also displays significantly improved antibacterial activities under irradiation. In addition, due to excellent chemical stability of PDMS and GDY, self-cleaning behavior and photothermal-assisted antibacterial performance are well maintained after long-term attack of bacteria. These results demonstrate that GDY-based functional coatings hold great promises in the protection of copper devices under harsh conditions.

As a remarkable multifunctional material, ferroferric oxide (Fe3O4) exhibits considerable potential for applications in many fields, such as energy storage and conversion technologies. However, the poor electronic and ionic conductivities of classical Fe3O4 restricts its application. To address this challenge, Fe3O4 nanoparticles are combined with graphene oxide (GO) via a typical hydrothermal method, followed by a conductive wrapping using poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrene sulfonic sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) for the fabrication of composite films. Upon acid treatment, a highly conductive porous Fe3O4@RGO/PEDOT:PSS hybrid is successfully constructed, and each component exerts its action that effectively facilitates the electron transfer and subsequent performance improvement. Specifically, the Fe3O4@RGO/PEDOT:PSS porous film achieves a high specific capacitance of 244.7 F g−1 at a current of 1 A g−1. Furthermore, due to the facial fabrication of the highly conductive networks, the free-standing film exhibits potential advantages in flexible thermoelectric (TE) materials. Notably, such a hybrid film shows a high electric conductivity (σ) of 507.56 S cm−1, a three times greater value than the Fe3O4@RGO component, and achieves an optimized Seebeck coefficient (S) of 13.29 μV K−1 at room temperature. This work provides a novel route for the synthesis of Fe3O4@RGO/PEDOT:PSS multifunctional films that possess promising applications in energy storage and conversion.

【Objective】Light-induced stomatal opening and closing is an important factor regulating CO2 intake and transpiration in plants. The study of plant stomatal characteristics under different light environments is helpful to understand the mechanism of plant adaptation to the environment.【Method】Taking three species of Juniperus plants with heteromorphic leaves widely cultivated in northern China as research objects, the stomatal characteristics were observed and parameters were measured by using NaClO method, and the stomatal characteristics and their correlation under short-term light change (diurnal change) and long-term light difference (shady and sunny sides of the canopy) in the same habitat were investigated.【Result】The leaves of three species of Juniperus had two leaf shapes. The stomata of scale leaves were distributed on the adaxial side and the abaxial side at the junction of two scale-like leaves, and the stomata of thorn leaves were only distributed on the adaxial side with two stomatal bands. Under diurnal changes, the width of guard cells in leaves of the three species of Juniperus at noon decreased significantly by 0.06%, 0.09% and 0.09% compared with that in the morning, and the stomatal opening increased significantly by 27.6%, 24.3% and 24.3%, and they were negatively correlated, however, there was no significant difference in guard cell length and stomatal density between morning and noon, indicating that the three species regulated stomatal aperture to adapt to short-term light changes mainly by guarding the contraction of cell width.【Conclusion】There were significant differences in guard cell length and width, stomatal density and stomatal aperture between the sunny leaves and the shady leaves of the canopy of the three species, and the first three parameters were significantly correlated with stomatal aperture, indicating that the three species changed stomatal aperture by regulating guard cells in length and width and stomatal density to adapt to the long-term light difference. Stomatal characteristics can better reflect the difference of plant adaptability to long-term and short-term light.

Abstract Background Measurement of the posterior tibial slope (PTS) angle has important applications in total knee replacement surgery, high tibial osteotomy, and anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. This study aimed to determine the mean PTS of knee joints in healthy Chinese adults, and provide data to guide knee surgery in China. Methods A retrospective analysis of 1257 (n = 1233, 50.4% male) plain X-ray films of participants aged 25–59 years was performed. The picture archiving and communication system was used for PTS measurement. The PTS was defined as the angle between the vertical line of the tangent of the anterior tibial cortex of the proximal tibia, and the tangent line of the tibial cortex. Two imaging physicians conducted the PTS measurements independently, and both the inter- and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated. Results The mean PTS value was 7.68 ± 3.84° (range: 0–21°). The left PTS was significantly smaller in males than in females (7.22 ± 3.89 vs 8.05 ± 3.60; P = 0.005). DNA damage-regulated autophagy modulator 1 (DRAM1) could play important roles in inflammation and hepatic apoptosis, while its roles in alcohol-related liver disease (ALD), which is characterized by hepatic inflammation and apoptosis, are still unclear. In this study, we explored the expression, role, and mechanism of DRAM1 in ALD. Firstly, our results showed that DRAM1 was significantly increased in liver tissues of mice at the early stage of alcohol treatment. In addition, DRAM1 knockout reduced, and liver-specific overexpression of DRAM1 aggravated, alcohol-induced hepatic steatosis, injury, and expressions of M1 macrophage markers in mice. Furthermore, ethanol-induced DRAM1 of hepatic cells increased pyruvate kinase M2 (PKM2)-enriched extracellular vesicles (EVs), and ectosomes derived from hepatic cells with DRAM1 overexpression promoted macrophage activation. Mechanistic investigations showed that DRAM1 interacted with PKM2 and increased the PKM2 level in plasma membrane. At last, DRAM1 was significantly increased in liver tissues of ALD patients, and it was positively correlated with M1 macrophage markers. Taken together, this study revealed that ethanol-induced DRAM1 of hepatic cells could increase the PKM2-enriched EVs, promote macrophage activation, and aggravate the disease progression of ALD. These findings suggested that DRAM1 might be a potentially promising target for the therapy of ALD.

To solve the problem of particle clogging in slit funnels and to obtain a stable discharge flow rate, we proposed a new funnel structure, namely the slit baffle funnel. We conducted a systematic investigation using the discrete element method (DEM) to study the effects of funnel half-angle θ, outlet width W, and baffle height H on flow rate and flow pattern. We found that the proposed structure could effectively avoid particle clogging and guarantee a continuous and stable flow rate with small outlet width. Under the condition of H >3 d, a bigger flow rate was obtained at a smaller funnel half-angle. This new funnel structure could be applied to solve clogging problems associated with granular matter in the slit geometry in mining, agriculture, food, and pharmaceuticals.

The bacterial accumulation at the margins of dental resin composites is a main cause of secondary caries, which may further lead to prosthodontic failure. In this regard, this study for the first time incorporated 2D MXene Ti3C2Tx nanosheets (NSs) into epoxy resin at different mass ratios (0, 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 wt%) by solution blending and direct curing for dental applications. Compared to the pure resin, the as-fabricated MXene/resin composite not only exhibited improved mechanical and abrasive results but also displayed gradually improved antibacterial activity with MXene loading which was further enhanced by illumination in natural light due to the high photothermal efficiency of MXene. In addition, the cytotoxicity result demonstrated that the MXene-modified resin did not cause severe damage to normal cells. This novel MXene/resin nanocomposite could pave the way for new designs for high-performance, multifunctional nanocomposites to effectively protect dental health in daily life.

5-Methylcytosine (m5C) is one of the most prevalent internal modifications of messenger RNA (mRNA) in higher eukaryotes. Here we report that Y box protein 2 (YBX2) serves as a novel mammalian m5C binding protein to undergo liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS) both in vivo and in vitro, and this YBX2-dependent LLPS is enhanced by m5C marked RNA. Furthermore, the crystal structure assay revealed that W100, as a distinct m5C binding site of YBX2, is critical in mediating YBX2 phase separation. Our study resolved the relationship between RNA m5C and phase separation, providing a clue for a new regulatory layer of epigenetics.

Abstract Background This study aimed to investigate the correlation of circulating total bilirubin (TB) and UGT1A1 with NAFLD in Chinese Han population. Methods 172 adults were enrolled from the Qingdao Municipal Hospital from May 2019 to October 2020. All individuals were examined with MRI-PDFF and divided into no steatosis, mild steatosis, moderate steatosis, and severe steatosis groups according to the MRI-PDFF values. All-solid-state Tm lasers have a wider wavelength range and higher output power compared to other types of lasers. In this work, we demonstrate an all-solid-state, high repetition, Tm:YAP laser Q-switched by a graphdiyne (GDY) saturable absorber. The high-quality optical nonlinear material GDY, synthesized by a cross-coupling method, exhibits a strong nonlinear optical response. The application of GDY as a saturable absorber in the passively Q-switched (PQS) Tm:YAP of an all-solid-state laser has been realized with the shortest pulse duration of ~785 ns and repetition frequency of ~199.6 kHz at a central wavelength of 1985.8 nm. This represents the shortest pulse duration and the highest repetition frequency achieved from GDY in a solid-state Tm laser to date. Our work demonstrates the remarkable nonlinear optical properties of GDY, which holds promising potential in the field of optoelectronics.

Black-phosphorus-analog lead monoxide (PbO), as a new emerging 2D material, has rapidly gained popularity in recent years due to its unique optical and electronic properties. Recently, both theoretical prediction and experimental confirmation have revealed that PbO exhibits excellent semiconductor properties, including a tunable bandgap, high carrier mobility, and excellent photoresponse performance, which is undoubtedly of great interest to explore its practical application in a variety of fields, especially in nanophotonics. In this minireview, we firstly summarize the synthesis of PbO nanostructures with different dimensionalities, then highlight the recent progress in the optoelectronics/photonics applications based on PbO nanostructures, and present some personal insights on the current challenges and future opportunities in this research area. It is anticipated that this minireview can pave the way to fundamental research on functional black-phosphorus-analog PbO-nanostructure-based devices to meet the growing demands for next-generation systems.

Tilletia laevis Kühn (syn. Tilletia foetida (Wallr.) Liro.) causes wheat common bunt, which is one of the most devastating plant diseases in the world. Common bunt can result in a reduction of 80% or even a total loss of wheat production. In this study, the characteristics of T. laevis infection in compatible wheat plants were defined based on the combination of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and laser scanning confocal microscopy. We found T. laevis could lead to the abnormal growth of wheat tissues and cells, such as leakage of chloroplasts, deformities, disordered arrangements of mesophyll cells and also thickening of the cell wall of mesophyll cells in leaf tissue. What’s more, T. laevis teliospores were found in the roots, stems, flag leaves, and glumes of infected wheat plants instead of just in the ovaries, as previously reported. The abnormal characteristics caused by T. laevis may be used for early detection of this pathogen instead of molecular markers in addition to providing theoretical insights into T. laevis and wheat interactions for breeding of common bunt resistance.

This study investigated the influence of instructors’ expressive nonverbal behavior and nonexpressive nonverbal behavior in video lectures on students’ learning performance and affective experience. We conducted two rounds of experiments using the same materials and procedures, the only difference being the participants. In each round of experiments, participants were randomly assigned to expressive condition or nonexpressive condition. 227 rural primary school sixth-graders took part in experiment 1, participants in expressive condition had better affective experiences and perceived tasks as less difficult, but had lower learning performance than participants in nonexpressive condition. 175 sixth-graders from urban primary schools participated in experiment 2. The results showed that instructors’ expressive nonverbal behavior also improved students’ affective experience and reduced students’ perception of task difficulty, but there was no significant difference in learning performance between the two groups. Comparing the pretest scores of students in the two experiments, it was found that the pretest scores of participants in experiment 2 were higher than those in experiment 1. Overall, instructors’ expressive nonverbal behavior can improve students’ affective experience and reduce their perception of task difficulty. However, when students’ prior knowledge is relatively low, instructors’ expressive nonverbal behavior hinders students’ learning performance. We suggest that teachers adopt expressive nonverbal behavior when lecturing because it is beneficial to maintain students’ long-term interest in learning. However, it should be noted that the difficulty of learning material should be determined by students’ prior knowledge.

Abstract An interesting phenomenon that a layer of crystallized shell formed at the container wall during an orifice flow in a cylinder is observed experimentally and is investigated in DEM simulation. Different from shear or vibration driven granular crystallization, our simulation shows during the flow the shell layer is formed spontaneously from stagnant zone at the base and grows at a constant rate to the top with no external drive. Roughness of the shell surface is defined as a standard deviation of the surface height and its development is found to disobey existed growth models. The growth rate of the shell is found linearly proportional to the flow rate. This shell is static and served as a rough wall in an orifice flow with frictionless sidewall, which changes the flow profiles and its stress properties, and in turn guarantees a constant flow rate.

Abstract Background Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is rapidly becoming one of the most common liver diseases. Ultrasound elastography has been used for the diagnosis of NAFLD. However, clinical research on steatosis by elastography technology has mainly focused on steatosis with fibrosis or non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), while steatosis without fibrosis has been poorly studied. Moreover, the relationship between liver viscoelasticity and steatosis grade is not clear. In this study, we evaluated the degree of liver steatosis in a simple steatosis rat model using shear wave elastography (SWE). Results The viscoelasticity values of 69 rats with hepatic steatosis were measured quantitatively by SWE in vivo and validated by a dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) test. Pathological sections were used to determine the steatosis grade for each rat. The results showed that the elasticity values µ obtained by the two methods followed the same trend, and µ is significantly correlated with liver steatosis. The Pearson’s correlation coefficients indicate that $$\mu$$ μ obtained by SWE is positively linear correlated with DMA (r = 0.628, p = 7.85 × 10–9). However, the viscosity values $$\eta$$ η obtained by SWE were relatively independent of those obtained by DMA with a correlation coefficient of − 0.01. Abstract Most existing stretchable batteries can generally only be stretched uniaxially and suffer from poor mechanical and electrochemical robustness to withstand extreme mechanical and environmental challenges. A highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst is herein developed via the unique self‐templated conversion of a guanosine‐based supramolecular hydrogel and presents a fully integrated design strategy to successfully fabricate an omnidirectionally stretchable and extremely environment‐adaptable Zn–air battery (ZAB) through the synergistic engineering of active materials and device architecture. The electrocatalyst demonstrates a very low reversible overpotential of only 0.68 V for oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER). This ZAB exhibits superior omnidirectional stretchability with a full‐cell areal strain of >1000% and excellent durability, withstanding more than 10 000 stretching cycles. Promisingly, without any additional pre‐treatment, the ZAB exhibits outstanding ultra‐low temperature tolerance (down to −60 °C) and superior waterproofness, withstanding continuous water rinsing (>5 h) and immersion (>3 h). The present work offers a promising strategy for the design of omnidirectionally stretchable and high‐performance energy storage devices for future on‐skin wearable applications.

Bismuth (Bi) has achieved remarkable progress due to its intriguing physicochemical properties, such as low toxicity, controllable stability, tunable bandgap, superior optical response, and strong diamagnetism. Bi-based hybrids have drawn increasing attention in recent years due to the integrated features of the Bi component and the synergistic effect on the separation and transfer of charges, holding great promises for versatile applications. In this Perspective, we systematically review the recent progress on the controlled synthesis of Bi-based heterostructures and their improved nanophotonic performances compared with those of mono-element Bi counterparts and present the existing challenges and future opportunities. It is anticipated that this Perspective can shed light on new designs of high-performance functional Bi-based heterostructures to meet the growing demand for next-generation nanophotonic systems.

In recent years, tin monosulfide (SnS), one kind of black phosphorus analogues, is of great interest owing to its unique properties, such as low cost, environmental compatibility, nontoxicity, earth‐abundance, etc., which merit it an ideal candidate for modern devices, such as batteries, sensors, and optoelectronics, among others. The controllable and precise synthesis of SnS‐based nanostructures with various crystal phases, sizes, and compositions holds great potential for high‐performance devices as crucial components. To further improve their performance for next‐generation devices, the nanoengineering of SnS‐based nanostructures has been extensively explored over the past decade. In this review, the latest research and progress on SnS‐based nanostructures, including 0D, 1D, 2D, and 3D pure SnS nanostructures, and SnS‐based loaded, sandwiched or encapsulated models are comprehensively presented, focusing on their synthetic approaches, fundamental properties, and fascinating applications such as batteries and solar cells, catalysis (photocatalysis and electrocatalysis), optoelectronics, sensors, ferroelectrics, thermoelectrics, nonlinear properties, and biomedical applications. Finally, the critical challenges and constructive perspectives are discussed for further improvement of the SnS‐based nanostructures in these burgeoning fields.

Background: Guided gaze is the instructor's gaze towards teaching materials to guide students' attention, and it plays a vital role in enhancing video-based education. The duration of guided gaze, indicating how long instructors focus on teaching materials, varies based on the lecture design. Nevertheless, the impact of varying durations of guided gaze, especially concerning students' prior knowledge, remains inadequately understood. Objectives: This study investigates the influence of the instructor's guided gaze duration and students' prior knowledge on learning performance and affective experiences in video lectures. Methods: 145 fifth-grade students participated and were divided into high and low prior knowledge groups based on a pre-test. Within each group, students were randomly assigned to view one of three video lectures with different guided gaze durations (high vs. medium vs. low). Learning performance and affective experiences (learning experience, satisfaction, and emotions) were measured as dependent variables. Results and Conclusion: The results revealed that low guided gaze duration significantly improves learning performance for students with low prior knowledge. Conversely, high guided gaze duration negatively impacts learning experience, satisfaction, and positive emotions. Additionally, students with high prior knowledge reported higher learning experience and satisfaction. These findings highlight the interaction between guided gaze duration and prior knowledge in students' learning performance. Implications: Our findings provide valuable implications for the design of guided gaze duration in video lectures based on students' prior knowledge. By adjusting guided gaze duration appropriately, instructors can optimise students' learning performance and affective experiences.

In the oral microenvironment, bacteria colonies are easily aggregated on the tooth-restoration surface, in the manner of a biofilm, which usually consists of heterogeneous structures containing clusters of a variety of bacteria embedded in an extracellular matrix, leading to serious recurrent caries. In this contribution, zero-dimensional (0D) bismuth (Bi) quantum dots (QDs) synthesized by a facile solvothermal method were directly employed to fabricate a Bi QD/polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-modified tooth by simple curing treatment. The result demonstrates that the as-fabricated Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth at 37 °C for 120 min not only showed significantly improved hydrophobic performance with a water contact angle of 103° and 115° on the tooth root and tooth crown, respectively, compared to that (~20° on the tooth root, and ~5° on the tooth crown) of the pristine tooth, but also exhibited excellent antibacterial activity against S. mutans, superior biocompatibility, and biosafety. In addition, due to the highly photothermal effect of Bi QDs, the antibacterial activity of the as-fabricated Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth could be further enhanced under illumination, even at a very low power density (12 mW cm−2). Due to the facile fabrication, excellent hydrophobicity, superior antibacterial activity, and biocompatibility and biosafety of the Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth, it is envisioned that the Bi QD/PDMS-modified tooth with a fascinating self-cleaning and antibacterial performance can pave the way to new designs of versatile multifunctional nanocomposites to prevent secondary caries in the application of dental restoration.

Soil microbial communities are essential to phosphorus (P) cycling, especially in the process of insoluble phosphorus solubilization for plant P uptake. Phosphate-solubilizing microorganisms (PSM) are the dominant driving forces. The PSM mediated soil P cycling is easily affected by water condition changes due to extreme hydrological events. Previous studies basically focused on the effects of droughts, floods, or drying-rewetting on P cycling, while few focused on drought-flood abrupt alternation (DFAA), especially through microbial activities. This study explored the DFAA effects on P cycling mediated by PSM and P metabolism-related genes in summer maize field soil. Field control experiments were conducted to simulate two levels of DFAA (light drought-moderate flood, moderate drought-moderate flood) during two summer maize growing periods (seeding-jointing stage, tasseling-grain filling stage). Results showed that the relative abundance of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) and phosphate-solubilizing fungi (PSF) increased after DFAA compared to the control system (CS), and PSF has lower resistance but higher resilience to DFAA than PSB. Significant differences can be found on the genera Pseudomonas, Arthrobacter, and Penicillium, and the P metabolism-related gene K21195 under DFAA. The DFAA also led to unstable and dispersed structure of the farmland ecosystem network related to P cycling, with persistent influences until the mature stage of summer maize. This study provides references for understanding the micro process on P cycling under DFAA in topsoil, which could further guide the DFAA regulations.

Ligustri lucidi Fructus is a traditional Chinese medicine and possesses various bioactivities, including hypoglycemic effect. Ligustrum lucidum Ait flowers are poorly investigated. Thus, we hypothesized that L. lucidum flowers also could have hypoglycemic effect. Chemical composition and glucose uptake effect of L. lucidum flowers on 3T3-L1 adipocytes were investigated. In this study, the components of L. lucidum flowers were investigated by various chromatographic and spectroscopic methods and the effects of L. lucidum flowers on the induction of glucose uptake were investigated by 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Seven compounds were isolated and identified from L. lucidum flowers, including ursolic acid (1), kaempferol-7-O-α-l-rhamnoside (2, KR), β-sitosterol (3), β-daucosterol (4), kaempferitrin (5, KF), 10-hydroxy oleuropein (6, HO), and kaempferol-3-O-β-d-glucopyranoside-7-α-l-rhamnopyranoside (7, KGR). The results of glucose uptake showed that total extract (TE), KR, KF and HO from L. lucidum flowers significantly enhanced glucose uptake. This study demonstrated that compounds 2, 5-7 were isolated for the first time from this plant and compounds 2 and 7 were isolated for the first time in genus Ligustrum, L. lucidum flowers, KR, KF and HO may possess potential hypoglycemic effect.

Abstract Background ALT value is often used to reflect the hepatic inflammation and injury in NAFLD patients, but many studies proved that ALT values were normal in many NAFLD patients. The aim of this study was to identify the summarized proportion of NAFLD patients with normal ALT value in the overall NAFLD patients. Methods Electronic databases PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid, and the Cochrane Library were searched for potential studies published from January 1, 2000 to September 30, 2019. Studies that have reported the number of NAFLD or NASH patients with normal and abnormal ALT value were included and analyzed. Abstracts, reviews, case reports, and letters were excluded. Results A total of 11 studies with 4084 patients were included for assessing the summarized proportion of NAFLD patients with normal ALT in overall NAFLD patients. As the results shown, the summarized proportion of NAFLD patients with normal ALT value in overall NAFLD patients was 25% (95%CI: 20–31%) which was calculated by the random-effects model. The summarized proportion of NASH patients with normal ALT value in overall NASH patients was 19% (95%CI: 13–27%). Subgroup analysis includes region, study type, diagnostic method, and group size were conducted to investigate the resource of heterogeneity in the summarized proportion of NAFLD and NASH patients with normal ALT value. Conclusions 25% NAFLD patients and 19% NASH patients possess the normal ALT value in the clinical manifestation. The value of ALT in the clinical diagnosis of NAFLD and NASH remains need be further testified.

Lenvatinib is the latest and promising agent that has demonstrated a significant improvement of progression-free survival in advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, resistance emerges soon after initial treatment, limiting the clinical benefits of lenvatinib. Therefore, understanding the mechanism of resistance is necessary for improving lenvatinib efficacy. YRDC promotes the proliferation of hepatocarcinoma cells via regulating the activity of the RAS/RAF/MEK/ERK pathway, which was the primary pathway of the anticancer effect of lenvatinib. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether YRDC modulates the sensitivity of lenvatinib in hepatocarcinoma cells. Using the CCK-8 cell viability assay, wound-healing assay and clone formation assay in cell models, and xenograft assay in null mouse, we demonstrated that Huh7 cells with YRDC knockdown showed decreased susceptibility to lenvatinib than their control cells. Furthermore, we found that lenvatinib inhibited the expression of YRDC in a time-dependent manner. This effect may aggravate resistance to lenvatinib in hepatocarcinoma cells and may be an underlying cause of resistance, which emerges soon after lenvatinib initial treatment. To investigate how YRDC modulates the sensitivity of lenvatinib, we assessed the effect of tRNA with different t6A levels on the translation of the KRAS gene by in vitro rabbit reticulocyte translation system and measured the expression levels of the KRAS gene by western blot together with qPCR. We found that YRDC regulates the protein translation of KRAS in cell models, and the tRNA with low t6A modification level reduces the translation of the KRAS in the in vitro translation system. These results suggested that YRDC mediates the resistance of lenvatinib in hepatocarcinoma cells via modulating the translation of the KRAS. In this study, YRDC was confirmed to be a potential novel predictive biomarker of lenvatinib sensitivity in HCC.

Origanum majorana L. is an aromatic herb that has been grown in several Mediterranean countries since ancient times, but became popular during the Middle Ages as a medicinal plant and seasoning ingredient. O. majorana has many pharmacological effects, but its immunoreactive components and mechanisms are still unclear. In this study, four compounds were isolated and identified from O. majorana by a spectral analysis, including 1H and 13C-NMR. They were 1H-indole-2-carboxylic acid (1), (+)-laricresol (2), (+)-isolaricresol (3), and procumboside B (4, pB), which were isolated for the first time in O. majorana. The immunomodulatory effects of the four compounds were screened, and pB had good immunomodulatory activity on RAW 264.7 cells. The immunomodulatory mechanism of pB was proved, in which pB could increase the secretion of nitric oxide (NO), interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) and simultaneously upregulate the expression of CD80 and CD86 on the cell surface. These results suggested that the mechanism of pB may be related to the activation of nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs)-signaling pathways. O. majorana is rich in nutrients and is commonly used in diets, so it can be used as a nutritional supplement with immunomodulatory effects.
