Aquatic ecosystems can harbour more than one non-native fish species and this can represent a threat due to trophic interactions with native fishes. However, research on interactions amongst multiple co-occurring native and non-native fish remains scarce. In this study, 551 organisms from 44 native fish, 11 non-native fish, 35 macroinvertebrates (of which one was non-native), together with 162 samples of basal resources were collected from six rivers of the Lower Pearl River Basin of China. Nitrogen and carbon stable isotope analysis was used to calculate community-wide trophic metrics and the degree of trophic overlap between native and non-native fish at both the community and functional feeding group level, together with diet composition. At the community level, there was a high degree of trophic niche overlap between native and non-native fish as a result of similarities in trophic characteristics. At the functional feeding group level, both native and non-native functional feeding groups demonstrated the capacity to occupy the niche space of each other. A significant trophic niche overlap, exceeding 50%, was found between non-native detritivorous and omnivorous fish, suggesting competition. The difference in diet composition between some native and non-native fish depended on the category of diet source across the rivers, suggesting dietary segregation. Albeit limited, the present findings suggest that trophic interaction between native and non-native fish is likely to reach a dynamic equilibrium status in the community owing to trophic segregation of fish species and the antagonistic effects amongst non-native fish.

Abstract Cervical open door laminoplasty is widely used in multilevel decompression, which is a motion-sparing decompression treatment option for multilevel cervical myelopathy. Implant distance migration in cervical laminoplasty has not been reported. A 61-year-old woman underwent cervical laminoplasty, three months postoperatively, she experienced left shoulder pain and left upper limb pain, and underwent cervical magnetic resonance imaging, which showed no abnormalities. She gradually developed dizziness, headache, unstable walking, incomplete urinary incontinence, and fluctuating neck lumps. The X-ray showed that the screws of the C7 lateral mass had disappeared and migrated to the sacral canal. The patient underwent cerebrospinal leakage repair and removal of the screws in the spinal canal. Displacement of fixators implanted into the spinal canal after cervical laminoplasty is a rare complication that can cause permanent neurological injury.

Background: The concurrent effects of particulate matter (PM) on both blood pressure (BP) and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) are insufficiently explored, with limited research on the potential mediating roles of SCFAs. Methods: In this prospective panel study with 4 follow-ups, we recruited 40 college students in Hefei, China, to assess the impacts of short-term exposure to PM (aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM10), ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5), and ≤1 μm (PM1)) on BP and SCFAs, along with potential mechanisms. Real-time PM data, urinary SCFAs levels, and BP indicators were systematically collected. Linear mixed-effects models assessed the relationships between PM, SCFAs, and BP. Mediation analyses explored SCFAs’ mediating role in the PM-BP association. Results: PM exposure was positively linked to BP and negatively associated with SCFAs. For a 10 μg/m3 rise in PM10 at lag 0–72 h, there were notable reductions of 0.0019 % (95 %CI: −0.0028, −0.0010) in Acetic acid, 0.0262 % (-0.0369, −0.0155) in Propionic acid, and 0.0702 % (-0.1025, −0.0378) in Butyric acid. Systolic BP, diastolic BP, and mean arterial pressure (MAP) increased by 2.60 mmHg (0.96, 4.25), 2.24 mmHg (1.18, 3.31), and 2.36 mmHg (1.20, 3.53), respectively, per 10-μg/m3 rise in PM1 at lag 0–24 h. Decreased SCFAs levels explained significant portions (24.69–31.80 %) of the elevated MAP due to PM10. Stronger associations were found in females and individuals with abnormal BMI. Conclusions: Our study shows that PM exposure decreases urinary SCFAs levels, which partially mediate the impact of PM on elevated BP. These findings enhance our comprehension of the pathways linking PM exposure to BP changes.

Abstract Gut microbiota is related to host fitness, and influenced by geographical locations and habitats. Pomacea canaliculata is a malignant invasive alien snail that threatens agricultural production and ecosystem functions worldwide. Clarifying the general rules of the gut microbial community structure and function of the snails in different geographical locations and habitats is of great significance for understanding their invasion at different spatial scales. This study used high‐throughput sequencing technology to compare and analyze the differences in community structure and function of gut microbiota in P. canaliculata from five geographical locations (Liuzhou, Yulin, Nanning, Wuzhou, and Hezhou) and three different habitats (pond, paddy field, and ditch) in Guangxi Province. The results showed that intestinal microbial alpha diversity of P. canaliculata was higher in Liuzhou, Yulin, lower in Nanning, Wuzhou, Hezhou, and higher in ponds compared with paddy fields and ditches. The dominant phyla of gut microbiota in snails were Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria, Proteobacteria, Fusobacteriota, Bacteroidota, and the dominant genus was Lactococcus. The community structure of gut microbiota in snails varied significantly across different geographical locations and habitats, and the phyla Firmicutes, Cyanobacteria had significantly higher relative abundance in snails collected from Nanning and Yulin, respectively. Moreover, the relative abundance of gut functional microbiota associated with human disease in P. canaliculata was significantly affected by geographical locations and habitats, and with the highest abundance in ponds. However, the relative abundance of functional microbiota related to metabolism, genetic information processing, organizational system, environmental information processing, and cellular processes were only significantly affected by geographical locations. Collectively, geographical locations and habitats had significantly different effects on the community structure and function of gut microbiota in P. canaliculata, and the greater differences were caused by geographical locations rather than by habitats.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanism by which resveratrol (Res) inhibits apoptosis and promotes proliferation and differentiation of pre-osteoblastic MC3T3-E1 cells, laying the groundwork for the treatment of osteoporosis (OP). The TCMSP database was used to find the gene targets for Res. The GeneCards database acquire the gene targets for OP. After discovering the potential target genes, GO, KEGG, and Reactome enrichment analysis were conducted. Verifying the major proteins involved in apoptosis can bind to Res using molecular docking. CCK8 measured the proliferative activity of mouse pre-osteoblasts in every group following Res intervention. Alkaline phosphatase staining (ALP) and alizarin red staining to measure the ability of osteogenic differentiation. RT-qPCR to determine the expression levels of Runx2 and OPG genes for osteogenic differentiation ability of cells. Western blot to measure the degree of apoptosis-related protein activity in each group following Res intervention. The biological processes investigated for GO of Res therapeutic OP involved in cytokine-mediated signaling pathway, negative regulation of apoptotic process, Aging, extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathway in absence of ligand, according to potential therapeutic target enrichment study. Apoptosis, FoxO signaling pathway, and TNF signaling pathway are the primary KEGG signaling pathways. Recactome pathways are primarily engaged in Programmed Cell Death, Apoptosis, Intrinsic Apoptotic Pathway, and Caspase activation via extrinsic apoptotic signaling pathways. This research established a new approach for Res treatment of OP by demonstrating how Res controls the apoptosis-related proteins TNF, IL6, and CASP3 to suppress osteoblast death and increase osteoclastogenesis.

Abstract In the Anthropocene, non-native freshwater fish introductions and translocations have occurred extensively worldwide. However, their global distribution patterns and the factors influencing their establishment remain poorly understood. We analyze a comprehensive database of 14953 freshwater fish species across 3119 river basins and identify global hotspots for exotic and translocated non-native fishes. We show that both types of non-native fishes are more likely to occur when closely related to native fishes. This finding is consistent across measures of phylogenetic relatedness, biogeographical realms, and highly invaded countries, even after accounting for the influence of native diversity. This contradicts Darwin’s naturalization hypothesis, suggesting that the presence of close relatives more often signifies suitable habitats than intensified competition, predicting the establishment of non-native fish species. Our study provides a comprehensive assessment of global non-native freshwater fish patterns and their phylogenetic correlates, laying the groundwork for understanding and predicting future fish invasions in freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract Background Treating lateral compression type 1 (LC1) pelvic ring injuries in older patients is controversial. This study evaluated surgical treatments combined with ERAS for treating LC1 pelvic fractures in the elderly. Methods In this retrospective study, patients who underwent surgery with INFIX (supra-acetabular spinal pedicle screws, and a subcutaneous connecting rod; the experimental group) or superior pubic ramus cannulated screw (the control group) fixation of LC1 pelvic fracture from January 2019 to January 2022 were reviewed. Injury radiography and computed tomography were performed to determine the Young–Burgess classification. All patients performed standardized early rehabilitation exercises after surgery and were followed up for > 12 months. After surgery, the Matta score and the visual analog scale (VAS) were evaluated, and the postoperative weight-bearing time and the length of stay (LOS) were recorded. The Barthel index and the Majeed score were evaluated at 4 months after surgery and at the last follow-up. Results Fifty-three patients were included. Thirty-two patients included in the experimental group had a mean age of 75.0 ± 6.2 (range, 66–86) years, and the other 21 patients in the control group had a mean age of 74.6 ± 4.6 (range, 68–83) years. The mean follow-up time was 13.1 ± 1.6 (range, 12–18) months in the experimental group and 13.4 ± 1.3 (range, 12–16) months in the control group. There were no significant differences in follow-up time between the groups (P > 0.05). The mean VAS score, time to weight-bearing, and LOS were 2.0 ± 0.7 (range, 1–3), 1.1 ± 0.3 (range, 1–2) d, and 5.8 ± 0.9 (range, 4–7) d in the experimental group and 2.3 ± 1.2 (range, 1–5), 2.5 ± 1.6 (range, 1–7) d, and 6.1 ± 1.6 (range, 5–11) d in the control group, respectively. Between the two groups, there was a significant difference in the postoperative time to weight-bearing (P 0.05). No bedrest-related complications occurred in either group. The Matta score was 90.6% in the experimental group and 90.4% in the control group (P > 0.05). At the 4-months follow-up, the experimental group had a better Barthel index and Majeed score compared with the control group, which were 86.1 ± 6.2 (range, 70–95) vs. 81.2 ± 4.1 (range, 75–90) and 86.3 ± 3.3 (range, 78–91) vs. 80.3 ± 3.9 (range, 76–86), respectively. The experimental group had better early rehabilitation effect than the control group. There was no significant difference in Barthel index and Majeed score between the two groups at the last follow-up (P > 0.05). Conclusion Both INFIX and intramedullary superior pubic ramus cannulated screws can successfully treat LC1 pelvic fractures and reduce bed rest complications among older patients.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to describe the circadian characteristics of hospitalized mortality in order to provide nursing guidance for preventing in‐hospital mortality. Design A retrospective analysis on inpatient information was implemented. Methods Harmonic Analysis of Time Series was applied to quantify the periodic structure of the frequency of the occurrence of death. Results A total of 3300 cases were included in the present study (male, 63.4% and median age 73 years), including 1540 (46.7%) ICU patients. Incidence of overall hospitalized death exhibited a circadian pattern, presenting peaks from 07:00 to 12:00 and 15:00 to 20:00 P.M., with 21.5% and 13.1% increase above the average at those peak points, respectively. Similarly, the incidence of sudden cardiac death (SCD) showed peaks between 06:00–12:00 and 15:00–20:00, with a 34.7% and 28.0% increase above the average at peak time, respectively. The distribution of death incidence revealed no statistical difference between SCD and non‐SCD (p = 0.525).

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a major global health issue and ranks among the top causes of liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Although current antiviral medications, including nucleot(s)ide analogs and interferons, could inhibit the replication of HBV and alleviate the disease, HBV cannot be fully eradicated. The development of cellular and animal models for HBV infection plays an important role in exploring effective anti-HBV medicine. During the past decades, advancements in several cell culture systems, such as HepG2.2.15, HepAD38, HepaRG, hepatocyte-like cells, and primary human hepatocytes, have propelled the research in inhibiting HBV replication and expression and thus enriched our comprehension of the viral life cycle and enhancing antiviral drug evaluation efficacy. Mouse models, in particular, have emerged as the most extensively studied HBV animal models. Additionally, the present landscape of HBV therapeutics research now encompasses a comprehensive assessment of the virus’s life cycle, targeting numerous facets and employing a variety of immunomodulatory approaches, including entry inhibitors, strategies aimed at cccDNA, RNA interference technologies, toll-like receptor agonists, and, notably, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). This review describes the attributes and limitations of existing HBV model systems and surveys novel advancements in HBV treatment modalities, which will offer deeper insights toward discovering potentially efficacious pharmaceutical interventions.

Mulberry crinkle leaf virus (MCLV) is a member of the genus Mulcrilevirus, family Geminiviridae. The expression and functions of the V4 and V5 genes encoded by the MCLV genome remain unknown. Here, we confirmed the expression of V4 and V5 by analyzing the V4 and V5 mRNAs and the promoter activity of individual ORFs upstream sequences. The functions of V4 and V5 were investigated by constructing Agrobacterium-mediated infectious clones of wild-type MCLV variant П (MCLV vII), MCLVwt and MCLV vП mutants, such as MCLVmV4 (start codon of V4 ORF mutated), MCLVdV4 (5′-end partial deletion of V4 ORF sequence) and MCLVmV5 (V5 ORF start codon mutated). Although MCLVwt, MCLVmV4, and MCLVdV4 could infect natural host mulberry and experimental tomato plants systematically, the replication of the MCLVmV4 and MCLVdV4 genomes was obviously reduced compared to MCLVwt in both mulberry and tomato plants. MCLV vП expressing V5 could infect Nicotiana benthamiana plants systematically, but MCLVmV5 could not, implying that V5 is needed for MCLV vП to infect N. benthamiana plants. Taken together, V4 is involved in replication of the MCLV genome in host plants, and V5 potentially might extend the host range. Our findings lay a foundation for in-depth insight into the functions of MCLV-encoded proteins and provide a novel perspective for the subsequent study of MCLV-host plant interactions.

Purpose: Static progressive stretch (SPS) can be applied to treat chronic joint stiffness. However, the impacts of subacute application of SPS to the distal lower limbs, where deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is common, on venous thromboembolism remain unclear. This study aims to explore the risk of venous thromboembolism events following subacute application of SPS. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on patients diagnosed with DVT following a lower extremity orthopedic surgery before being transferred to the rehabilitation ward from May 2017 to May 2022. Patients with unilateral lower limb comminuted para-articular fractures, transferred to rehabilitation ward for further treatment within 3 weeks after operation, followed up more than 12 weeks since initial manual physiotherapy, and diagnosed DVT by ultrasound before rehabilitation course were included in the study. Patients with polytrauma, without evidence of previous peripheral vascular disease or incompetence, had medication for thrombosis treatment or prophylaxis before the operation, detected with paralysis due to nervous system impairment, infected after operation during the regime, or with acute progression of DVT were excluded. The included patients were randomized to the standard physiotherapy and the SPS integrated groups for observation. Associated DVT and pulmonary embolism data were collected during the physiotherapy course to compare the groups. SSPS 28.0 and GraphPad Prism 9 were used for data processing. A p < 0.05 was set significant difference. Results: In total of 154 patients with DVT participating in this study, 75 of them were treated with additional SPS for postoperative rehabilitation. The participants in the SPS group showed improved range of motion (12.3° ± 6.7°). Background: The increasing evidence suggests that necroptosis mediates many behaviors of tumors, as well as the regulation of the tumor microenvironment. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are involved in a variety of regulatory processes during tumor development and are significantly associated with patient prognosis. It suggests that necroptosis-related lncRNAs (NRlncRNAs) may serve as biomarkers for the prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Methods: lncRNA expression profiles of HCC were obtained from TCGA database. LncRNAs associated with necroptosis were extracted using correlation analysis. Prognostic models were constructed based on least absolute shrinkage and selection operator algorithm (LASSO) and multivariate Cox regression analysis. The differences of tumor microenvironment between high-risk and low-risk groups were further analyzed. Single-cell RNA sequencing data of HCC was performed to assess the enrichment of necroptosis-related genes in immune cell subsets. Finally, real-time RT-PCR was used to detect the prognosis-related lncRNAs expression in different HCC cell lines. Results: We constructed a prognostic signature based on 8 NRlncRNAs, which also showed good predictive accuracy. Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI), acute kidney disease (AKD) and CKD (chronic kidney disease) were a continuous process. There has been little discussion of risk factors for AKD in the population undergoing surgery for acute type A aortic dissection (AAAD). Objective: The main objective of this study was to investigate the risk factors for AKD after surgery for acute type A aortic dissection and the impact of AKD on early and late mortality. Design: AKI was to be defined as an increase in serum creatinine to >0.3 mg/dL or 1.5 times above baseline within 7 days. AKD was defined as the kidney damage within 90 days after AKI. Logistic regression models were performed to identify the risk factors of AKD and the association between AKD and early mortality after AAAD surgery. Participants: Patients with AKI after AAAD surgery admitted in ICU from March 2009 to September 2021 were included. Key results: Among the 328 patients who developed AKI after AAAD surgery, 98 patients (29.9%) progressed to AKD. Multivariable analysis revealed that AKI stage 2 (OR, 3.032) and AKI stage 3 (OR, 4.001) have been shown to be independent risk factors for the development of AKD. AKD (OR, 3.175) proved to be an independent risk factor for early mortality, while no significant difference in late mortality was observed between patients in the AKD and non-AKD groups. Conclusion: The severity of AKI after surgery of AAAD was independently associated with AKD. The occurrence of AKD had a negative impact on early mortality. Investigating vegetation–climate interactions is critical for understanding behavioral patterns of terrestrial ecosystems and formulating food security strategies. However, the multi-spatiotemporal legacy effects of climate on terrestrial vegetation remain unclear. In this study, we examined the dynamic trends of vegetation distribution and climatic factors at multiple temporal and spatial scales. Moreover, using cross-wavelet transform, wavelet coherence transform, and partial correlation analysis, a paradigm framework was established to determine the multi-spatiotemporal legacy effect of climate on vegetation in China in 2000–2019, as well as the response of different vegetation types. The results indicate a significant greening trend in China, accompanied by a warming and wetting pattern over the past 20 years. The phase difference of the wavelet coherence transform in the time-frequency domain revealed remarkable legacy effects and regional variations, indicating a complicated relationship between vegetation and climate. Meanwhile, different vegetation types exhibited heterogeneous responses of legacy effect of precipitation and temperature on multi-spatiotemporal scales; moreover, the lag time in spring was shorter than that in summer and autumn. The average legacy effect on different vegetation types was approximately 1–2 months. Therefore, the heterogeneity of the legacy effects is a complicated process of dynamic variation, which can be summarized as the comprehensive characteristics of vegetation response to climate with regional discrepancy, ecosystem category, and multi-temporal scale. These findings advance our understanding regarding the preference of vegetation to hydrothermal conditions across biomes and ecosystems and provide a future framework for elucidating the dynamic response of vegetation to other more complex factors in this warmer world. Furthermore, our results emphasize that multi-spatiotemporal legacy effects should be incorporated into the vegetation–climate interaction model and the formulation of macro-environmental management policies.

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is characterized by excessive accumulation of hepatic lipids and metabolic stress-induced liver injury. There are currently no approved effective pharmacological treatments for NAFLD. Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for centuries to treat patients with chronic liver diseases without clear disease types and mechanisms. More recently, TCM has been shown to have unique advantages in the treatment of NAFLD. We performed a systematic review of the medical literature published over the last two decades and found that many TCM formulas have been reported to be beneficial for the treatment of metabolic dysfunctions, including Potentilla discolor Bunge (PDB). PDB has a variety of active compounds, including flavonoids, terpenoids, organic acids, steroids and tannins. Many compounds have been shown to exhibit a series of beneficial effects for the treatment of NAFLD, including anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory functions, improvement of lipid metabolism and reversal of insulin resistance. In this review, we summarize potential therapeutic effects of TCM formulas for the treatment of NAFLD, focusing on the medicinal properties of natural active compounds from PDB and their underlying mechanisms. We point out that PDB can be classified as a novel candidate for the treatment and prevention of NAFLD.

Abstract Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a refractory autoimmune disease, whose typical pathology is the development of inflammation to ossification and ankylosis. Histone deacetylase 1 (HDAC1) is considered to be a key factor involved in inflammatory gene transduction, but its role in AS remains unclear. The purpose of this study was to explore the role and possible mechanism of HDAC1 in AS based on the Wnt-Smad pathway. Fibroblasts were isolated from hip synovial tissues of AS patients, adeno-associated virus (AAV) was used to regulate the expression of HDAC1, DKK-1 and SIS3 was used to inhibit Wnt and Smad, respectively. The expressions of Wnt-Smad pathway-related proteins were analyzed by WB, and the TRP ion channel proteins were analyzed by immunofluorescence and WB. The proliferation of AS fibroblasts was detected by CCK-8, the expression of inflammatory cytokines was detected by ELISA, and the effects of HDAC1 on osteogenic differentiation of AS fibroblasts were investigated by alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, intracellular calcium concentration, mineralization and osteogenic proteins expressions. Results showed that HDAC1 significantly affected the protein expressions of the Wnt-Smad pathway in AS fibroblasts, and Wnt inhibitor DKK-1 and Smad3 inhibitor SIS3 could significantly reverse the effect of HDAC1 on the Wnt-Smad pathway. In addition, HDAC1 significantly activated the TRP ion channel and promoted the proliferation, inflammatory response and osteogenic differentiation of AS fibroblasts. DKK-1 or SIS3 treatment significantly inhibit the effect of HDAC-1 on AS fibroblasts, suggesting that the Wnt-Smad pathway is involved in the regulation of AS by HDAC1. In conclusion, HDAC1 promotes the proliferation, inflammatory response and osteogenic differentiation of AS fibroblasts through the Wnt-Smad pathway.

BackgroundThere is increasing evidence that neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy is superior to neoadjuvant chemotherapy for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer. However, a number of studies have come to the opposite conclusion. Therefore, our meta-analysis is to evaluate the efficacy and safety of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy in the treatment of locally advanced gastric cancer.MethodsWe searched Wanfang Database, China National Knowledge Network database, VIP database, China Biomedical Literature Database, PubMed, Embase and Cochrane Library. The searched terms included’Stomach Neoplasms’, ‘Neoadjuvant Therapy’ and ‘Chemoradiotherapy’. The retrieval time was from the establishment of the corresponding database to September 2022, and our meta-analysis was performed using RevMan (version 5.3) and Stata (version 17) software.ResultsA total of 17 literatures were included, which involved 7 randomized controlled trials and 10 retrospective studies, with a total of 6831 patients. The results of meta-analysis showed that compared with NACT group, the complete response rate(RR=1.95, 95%CI 1.39-2.73, p=0.0001), the partial response rate(RR=1.44, 95%CI 1.22-1.71, p=0.0001), the objective response rate(RR=1.37, 95%CI 1.27-1.54, p=0.00001), the pathologic complete response rate(RR=3.39, 95%CI 2.17-5.30, p=0.00001), the R0 resection rate(RR=1.18, 95%CI 1.09-1.29, p=0.0001) and 3-year overall survival rate(HR=0.89, 95%CI 0.82-0.96, p=0.002) of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group were significantly improved. The results of subgroup analyses of gastric cancer subgroup and gastroesophageal junction cancer subgroup were consistent with the overall results. Meanwhile, the stable disease(RR=0.59, 95%CI:0.44-0.81, P=0.0010) of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group was lower than that of neoadjuvant chemotherapy group, and there were no statistical significance in the progressive disease rate(RR=0.57, 95%CI:0.31-1.03, P=0.06), five-year overall survival rate(HR=1.03, 95%CI:0.99-1.07, P=0.839), postoperative complications and adverse reactions between the neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group and neoadjuvant chemotherapy group.ConclusionCompared with neoadjuvant chemotherapy, neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy might bring more survival benefits without significantly increasing adverse reactions. neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy may be a recommended treatment for patients with locally advanced gastric cancer.Systematic Review Registrationhttps://inplasy.com/inplasy-2022-12-0068/, identifier INPLASY202212068.

ObjectivesAndrogen deprivation therapy combined with radiotherapy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer is still a matter of debate. We conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the necessity of androgen deprivation therapy combined with radiotherapy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients.MethodsA comprehensive literature search of articles was performed in PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, Web of Science, Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure, Chinese Biological Medicine, Wanfang, and VIP Databases published between February 1988 and April 2022. Studies comparing the survival of patients diagnosed with intermediate-risk prostate cancer who were treated with androgen deprivation therapy combined with radiotherapy or radiotherapy alone were included. Data were extracted and analyzed with the RevMan software (version 5.3) and the Stata software (version 17).ResultsSix randomized controlled trials and nine retrospective studies, including 6853 patients (2948 in androgen deprivation therapy combined with radiotherapy group and 3905 in radiotherapy alone group) were enrolled. Androgen deprivation therapy combined with radiotherapy did not provide an overall survival (HR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01-1.12, p=0.04) or biochemical recurrence-free survival (HR 1.23, 95% CI 1.09-1.39, P=0.001) advantage to intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients.ConclusionAndrogen deprivation therapy combined with radiotherapy did not show some advantages in terms of overall survival and biochemical recurrence-free survival and radiotherapy alone may be the effective therapy for intermediate-risk prostate cancer patients.Systematic review registrationhttps://inplasy.com/inplasy-2022-8-0095/, identifier 202280095.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a frequent complication in patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) and is associated with high rates of mortality. We aimed to estimate serum high mobility group protein 1 (HMGB1) levels in hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure patients and analyze their clinical value in the development and outcomes of Acute kidney injury.Methods: A total of 251 consecutive patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure were enrolled in this retrospective study. Using the International Club of Ascites staging criteria of Acute kidney injury, 153 patients developed Acute kidney injury. The clinical data of patients were collected and serum levels of high mobility group protein 1 were measured by ELISA. All patients were followed up until death or for a minimum of 3 months. Early prediction and prognostic implications of high mobility group protein 1 in Hepatitis B Virus-Related Acute-on-Chronic Liver Failure Patients with Acute Kidney Injury were investigated in different cohorts, including a propensity score-matched ACLF cohort.Results: Among all individuals with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure, the incidence of Acute kidney injury was 61.0% (153/251). The patients who developed stage 2/3 Acute kidney injury showed the highest high mobility group protein 1 levels, followed by those who developed stage 1 Acute kidney injury, and those without Acute kidney injury showed the lowest high mobility group protein 1 levels. Moreover, high mobility group protein 1 levels were significantly higher in non-survivors than in survivors among hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure patients with Acute kidney injury. Furthermore, analysis of the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) indicated that serum high mobility group protein 1 levels (pre-matching: AUC = 0.740; post-matching: AUC = 0.661) may be a potential predictive factor for Acute kidney injury development and that high mobility group protein 1 (AUC = 0.727) might be a reliable biomarker for prognosis in patients with Acute kidney injury.Conclusion: In patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure, Acute kidney injury is universal. Acute kidney injury and its stages negatively influence the 90-day transplant-free mortality rate. Serum high mobility group protein 1 levels can serve as a positive predictor of Acute kidney injury development, and high mobility group protein 1 might also be a prognostic biomarker for Acute kidney injury among hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure patients.

Pepper mottle virus (PepMoV) infects primarily Capsicum species, including pepper and bell pepper which are important vegetable and spice crops in Korea. We have previously collected 13 PepMoV isolates from nine regions comprising five provinces, causing different symptoms on inoculated indicator host plants in Korea. To further identify the responsible symptom determinant(s) and explore viral protein functions of PepMoV, two out of 13 isolates, including 134 and 205136, were used in this study. Isolate 134 causes necrosis and yellowing, while 205136 causes severe mottle and yellowing symptoms on Nicotiana benthamiana. All chimeric and site-directed mutants contain the PepMoV 134 genome as a backbone with specific regions switched for those from counterparts of PepMoV 205136. Effects of all mutants compared with 134 after inoculation onto N. benthamiana by agroinfiltration. Results from our study provide direct evidence that the helper component-proteinase (HC-Pro) and the nuclear inclusion protein b (NIb)-coat protein (CP) regions are involved in virus accumulation and symptom determinants. In addition, we mapped to amino acid residues tyrosine, glycine, and leucine at position 360, 385, and 527, respectively, in the HC-Pro region participate in faster viral accumulation or movement in the plant. The residue valine at position 2773 of NIb plays an essential role in isolate 134 symptom development. As part of this study, we seek to gain insight into viral factors involved in the PepMoV infection cycle and a better understanding of plant-virus interactions. These findings complement the insufficiency of the gene function study of the PepMoV virus and provide a novel perspective for the protein function study of the Potyvirus.

ObjectivesTo assess the clinical efficacy and toxicity of nimotuzumab in combination with chemoradiotherapy or chemoradiotherapy alone in the treatment of cervical cancer.MethodsThe PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, China Biomedical Medicine, Wanfang, and VIP databases were systematically searched for relevant literature. Ultimately, six randomised controlled trials (n=393) were included in our meta-analysis.ResultsA total of 393 patients were included, of which 197 were in the nimotuzumab combined with chemoradiotherapy group and 196 were in the chemoradiotherapy group. The results of our meta-analysis showed that the complete remission rate (risk ratio [RR] = 1.34, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.08-1.65, P = 0.007), objective response rate (RR = 1.30, 95% CI: 1.16-1.44, P < 0.05), and three-year survival rate (RR = 1.27, 95% CI: 1.06-1.51, P = 0.008) in the nimotuzumab combined with chemoradiotherapy group were significantly improved compared with the chemoradiotherapy group. This difference was not statistically significant when comparing the incidence of adverse reactions (such as leukocytopenia, gastrointestinal reaction, radiocystitis, and radioproctitis) between the two groups.ConclusionsNimotuzumab in combination with chemoradiotherapy has some advantages over chemoradiotherapy alone in the treatment of cervical cancer and does not increase toxicity. Therefore, nimotuzumab has the potential to be an effective treatment for cervical cancer; however, further evidence from large-scale randomised controlled trials is needed.

PurposeTo investigate the association between subtypes of metabolic syndrome (MetS) and prognosis of patients with stage I endometrioid adenocarcinoma.Patients and methodsPatients with stage I endometrioid adenocarcinoma who received surgical treatment as primary therapy at the Department of Gynecology of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital between June 2015 and December 2019 were retrospectively enrolled. According to the diagnosis criteria of MetS, the patients were categorized as patients without MetS, patients with MetS but without raised fasting plasma glucose (FPG, including previously diagnosed diabetes), and patients with MetS and raised FPG. All the included patients were followed from the dates of surgery until death, June 2021, or loss to follow-up, whichever came first, and cancer recurrence (including metastasis) was studied as the main outcome. Cox regression was used to evaluate the associations between subtypes of MetS and the study outcome adjusting for potential confounding factors.ResultsAmong the included 387 patients with stage I endometrioid adenocarcinoma, 193 (49.9%) were without MetS, 65 (16.8%) were with FPG not involving MetS, and 129 (33.3%) were with raised FPG involved MetS. With a median follow-up of 1,253 days, the cumulative incidence of cancer recurrence was 8.76% (95% confidence interval (CI) 2.5%–14.62%), 28.31% (95% CI 2.33%–47.38%), and 7.54% (95% CI 1.54%–13.17%), respectively. After adjusting for age, menopause, histological grade, tumor size, lymph-vascular space invasion, deep myometrial invasion, and treatments, comorbid FPG not involving MetS is a stronger risk factor of cancer recurrence than comorbid raised FPG involving MetS (hazard ratio 2.82 (95% CI 1.10–7.24) versus 1.18 (95% CI 0.45–3.13)) when compared to patients without MetS.ConclusionComorbid MetS generally presents as a risk factor of poor prognosis in patients with stage I endometrioid adenocarcinoma after surgical treatment, but the magnitude of the association may vary between subtypes, in which FPG not involving MetS appears to be predominant.

Summary: Understanding the evolutionary history of the highly diverse ray-finned fishes has been challenging, and the development of more universal primers for phylogenetic analyses may help overcoming these challenges. We developed FishPIE, a nested PCR primer set of 82 phylogenetically informative exon markers, and tested it on 203 species from 31 orders of Actinopterygii. We combined orthologous sequences of the FishPIE markers obtained from published genomes and transcriptomes and constructed the phylogeny of 710 species belonging to 190 families and 60 orders. The resulting phylogenies had topologies comparable to previous phylogenomic studies. We demonstrated that the FishPIE markers could address phylogenetic questions across broad taxonomic levels. By incorporating the newly sequenced taxa, we were able to shed new light on the phylogeny of the highly diverse Cypriniformes. Thus, FishPIE holds great promise for generating genetic data for broad taxonomic groups and accelerating our understanding of the fish tree of life.

ObjectivesTo evaluate the clinical curative effects and toxicity of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for resectable gastric cancer compared to those of neoadjuvant chemotherapy.MethodsA systematic review and meta-analysis of the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy were performed in patients with resectable gastric cancer.ResultsSeven RCTs were included (601 patients; 302 in the neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group and 299 in the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group). The neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group had an increased number of patients with a complete response [odds ratio (OR) = 3.79, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.68–8.54, p = 0.001] and improved objective response rate (OR = 2.78, 95% CI: 1.69–4.57, p < 0.0001), 1-year (OR = 3.51, 95% CI: 1.40–8.81, p = 0.007) and 3-year (OR = 2.14, 95% CI: 1.30–3.50, p = 0.003) survival rates, R0 resection rate (OR = 2.21, 95% CI: 1.39–3.50, p = 0.0008), and complete pathologic response (OR = 4.39, 95% CI: 1.59–12.14, p = 0.004). Regarding the incidence of adverse effects after neoadjuvant therapy, only the occurrence rate of gastrointestinal reaction in the neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy group was higher than that in the neoadjuvant chemotherapy group (OR = 1.76, 95% CI: 1.09–2.85, p = 0.02), and there was no significant difference in other adverse effects. There was no difference in the incidence of postoperative complications between the two groups.ConclusionNeoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for resectable gastric cancer has several advantages in terms of efficacy and safety compared to neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Abstract Background Hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) is an important treatment for ovarian cancer. A certain portion of cisplatin exits the body via the perfusate at the end of HIPEC, so full-dose utilization cannot be achieved. Herein, we sought to explore how much cisplatin is actually utilized and its prognostic influence. Methods Cisplatin (70 mg/m2) was given at 43 °C for 90 min. The actually utilized dose (AD) of cisplatin was calculated using the following formula: AD (mg) = total dose (TD) (mg)-losing dose (LD) (mg); LD = volume (ml) of the perfusate (VPretained) that was retained in the HIPEC treatment system at the end of HIPEC * concentration of cisplatin in the perfusate (mg/ml). Result Sixty-two ovarian cancer patients were included. The median TD, median LD and median AD were 95 mg, 20.7 mg and 75.8 mg, respectively. The utility rate of cisplatin (AD/TD ratio) was 79.2%. On simple linear regression analysis, the TD and VPretained were found to significantly predict the AD.
