Ecological restoration is addressing the challenge of biodiversity conservation in landscapes where native vegetation has been extensively cleared. Reestablishing ecological interactions that support self‐sustainable populations plays an essential role in restoration efforts. For animal‐pollinated plant species, comparing mating system dynamics within restoration populations with natural remnant populations can inform the progress of restoration activities. We assessed mating system parameters, seed weight, invertebrate floral visitors, and genetic diversity for two restoration populations and two native reference remnant populations of the animal‐pollinated, woody shrub/tree, Hakea laurina (Proteaceae) in the Southwest Australian Floristic Region. There was no difference in outcrossing rates between the two sites (restoration and reference populations combined) or treatments (sites combined). However, one restoration population showed significantly lower outcrossing that was correlated with reduced seed weight, greater inbreeding, and significantly lower invertebrate richness and abundance compared to its nearby remnant population. In contrast, in the other restoration population, all measures were comparable to the reference remnant population. Local genetic diversity available in remnant populations was captured in both restoration populations. Limitations to pollinator services may be affecting mating patterns and potentially population fitness, in a younger restoration population with reduced proximity to remnant vegetation, which has a tall coplanted overstorey species and spatially aggregated individuals. We highlight these aspects of restoration populations as important areas of ongoing research that will impact the reestablishment of ecological interactions, and the assessment of mating system dynamics as a valuable tool to inform the current progress of restoration activities. Widespread plant species are expected to maintain genetic diversity and gene flow via pollen and seed dispersal. Stature is a key life history trait that affects seed and potentially pollen dispersal, with limited stature associated with limited dispersal and greater genetic differentiation. We sampled Hill's tabletop wattle (Acacia hilliana) and curry wattle (Acacia spondylophylla), two co‐distributed, widespread, Acacia shrubs of low stature, across the arid Pilbara region of north‐western Australia. Using chloroplast sequence and nuclear microsatellite data we evaluated patterns of population genetic and phylogeographic diversity and structure, demographic signals, ratios of pollen to seed dispersal, evidence for historical refugia, and association between elevation and diversity. Results showed strong phylogeographic (chloroplast, GST = 0.831 and 0.898 for A. hilliana and A. spondylophylla, respectively) and contemporary (nuclear, FST = 0.260 and 0.349 for A. hilliana and A. spondylophylla, respectively) genetic structure in both species. This indicates limited genetic connectivity via seed and pollen dispersal associated with Acacia species of small stature compared to taller tree and shrub acacias across the Pilbara bioregion. This effect of stature on genetic structure is superimposed on moderate levels of genetic diversity that were expected based on widespread ranges (haplotype diversity h = 25 and 12; nuclear diversity He = 0.60 and 0.47 for A. hilliana and A. spondylophylla, respectively). Contemporary genetic structure was congruent at the greater landscape scale, especially in terms of strong genetic differentiation among geographically disjunct populations in less elevated areas. Measures of diversity and connectivity were associated with traits of greater geographic population proximity, population density, population size, and greater individual longevity, and some evidence for range expansion in A. hilliana. Results illustrate that low stature is associated with limited dispersal and greater patterns of genetic differentiation for congenerics in a common landscape and highlight the complex influence of taxon‐specific life history and ecological traits to seed and pollen dispersal. Context: Empirical studies of intraspecific genetic diversity and population structure can inform the evolutionary and demographic history of individual species and of landscapes at the bioregional level. Aims: We aimed to assess intraspecific genetic variation at macroevolutionary and microevolutionary temporal scales for Mirbelia viminalis, a key species present on the Hamersley Range in the ancient and highly diverse landscape of the Pilbara bioregion of northwest Western Australia. Methods: We sampled extant populations and assessed diversity and structure using sequences (chloroplast DNA, 1759 base pairs) and microsatellite markers (nuclear DNA, 15 loci) data. Key results: Significant phylogeographic structure and a lack of historical demographic signals of population contraction or expansion suggest historical population persistence. Moderate chloroplast haplotype diversity (h = 15) and moderate divergence among extant haplotypes indicates a degree of historical connectivity via seed dispersal across central populations on the Hamersley Range. Levels of nuclear genetic diversity were low to moderate (allelic richness = 3.554, expected heterozygosity = 0.489, observed heterozygosity = 0.462) and depauperate compared to another member of the Mirbelia genus present further south in the Midwest region. Nuclear diversity revealed a strong signal of isolation by distance with localised admixture among populations and some contemporary genetic clustering along a north-west to south-east transect of the Hamersley Range. Conclusions: Low nuclear genetic diversity may be related to recent reductions in population size for M. viminalis. Historical population persistence with few barriers to dispersal other than geographic distance may be common for members of the Fabaceae across the Hamersley Range. Knowledge of patterns of population genetic structure and genetic diversity can tell us about the evolutionary history of plant species and of the landscapes where they occur. Mirbelia viminalis shows evidence of historical population persistence and connectivity via both seed and pollen dispersal that becomes increasingly limited with geographic distance across the Hamersley Range in the Pilbara bioregion. Ecological genetics can provide a novel contribution to assessing the achievement of restoration objectives. We used paternity assignment to infer realized pollen dispersal within, and pollen immigration into, a restoration population of Hakea nitida, a common near‐coastal shrub or small tree in southwest Australia. We compared mating system parameters and genetic diversity with a nearby remnant reference population and assessed genetic divergence among the restoration and reference populations. We found realized pollen dispersal events closely tracked the frequency distributions of the distances between all plants within the restoration focus area. Mean realized pollen dispersal distance (359 m) approached the mean of the distances between all plants (407 m), far exceeding mean nearest neighbor distance (12 m). Maximum realized pollen dispersal distance (869 m) approached the maximum distance between all plants in the study area (1,033 m). Pollen immigration into the restoration study area was limited (4%). The mating system revealed moderate outcrossing rates (tm = 0.861 restoration and tm = 0.745 reference population), with significant and similar biparental inbreeding (tm − ts = 0.180, tm− ts = 0.186) but greater correlated paternity (rpm) in the restoration (0.519) than in the reference (0.188) population. Genetic divergence among the restoration and reference remnant population was moderate (FST = 0.094, DST = 0.239). Patterns of pollen dispersal and mating system parameters imply the attraction of pollinators within the restoration population as a key factor in progressing towards the establishment of self‐sustaining populations. Evaluation of patterns of pollen dispersal, mating systems, population fitness, genetic diversity and differentiation in restoration and remnant plant populations can be useful in determining how well restoration activities have achieved their objectives. We used molecular tools to assess how well restoration objectives have been met for populations of Banksia media in the biodiversity hotspot of south-west Western Australia. We characterized patterns of pollen dispersal within, and pollen immigration into, two restoration populations. We compared mating system parameters, population fitness via seed weight, genetic diversity and genetic differentiation for restoration and associated reference remnant populations. Different patterns of pollen dispersal were revealed for two restoration sites that differed in floral display, spatial aggregation of founders and co-planted species. Proximity to remnant native vegetation was associated with enhanced immigration and more short-range pollen dispersal when other population variables were constant. Greater seed weights at remnant compared to restoration populations were not related to outcrossing rate. Equivalent mating system and genetic diversity parameters and low to moderate levels of genetic differentiation between restoration and remnant populations suggest pollinator services have been restored in genetically diverse restoration populations of local provenance B. media as early as four years from planting. Acacia cyclops, or Ngaamarur, is a common coastal shrub or small tree of the southwest of Western Australia and South Australia used for restoration in these landscapes and elsewhere. Knowledge of genetic diversity and mating systems of restoration populations is often lacking but can help inform likely restoration success. We compared genetic diversity and mating system parameters at three restoration populations of A. cyclops to nearby remnant reference populations. Mean levels of genetic diversity in restoration populations (Na = 1.806, Ne = 1.560, He = 0.270, Ho = 0.359) were not significantly different from those in the reference populations (Na = 1.833, Ne = 1.574, He = 0.269, Ho = 0.352) suggesting diverse seed collections were made for restoration. Allelic genetic divergence among restoration and reference populations was low (DST ≤ 0.04) suggesting that seeds were of local provenance. Mating system parameters were similar among restoration (tm = 0.989, tm–ts = 0.010, rpm = 0.392) and reference populations (tm = 0.868, tm–ts = 0.039, rpm = 0.410), suggesting functionality of the mating system and restitution of generalist insect pollinator services in restored populations at 7, 10, and 12 years after planting. Lower levels of heterozygosity in progeny compared to adults suggest post‐germination or late‐acting selection against inbred seedlings. Evidence for selection and seedling attrition further emphasizes the benefits of collections from many individuals in well‐connected outcrossed source populations. The high species endemism characteristic of many of the world's terrestrial island systems provides a model for studying evolutionary patterns and processes, yet there has been no synthesis of studies to provide a systematic evaluation of terrestrial island systems in this context. The banded iron formations (BIFs) of south‐western Australia are ancient terrestrial island formations occurring within a mosaic of alluvial clay soils, sandplains and occasional granite outcropping, across an old, gently undulating, highly weathered, plateau. Notably, these BIFs display exceptionally high beta plant diversity. Here, we address the determinants and consequences of genetic diversity for BIF‐associated plant species through a comprehensive review of all studies on species distribution modelling, phylogenetics, phylogeography, population genetics, life‐history traits and ecology. The taxa studied are predominantly narrowly endemic to individual or a few BIF ranges, but some have more regional distributions occurring both on and off BIFs. We compared genetic data for these BIF‐endemic species to other localised species globally to assess whether the unique history and ancestry of BIF landscapes has driven distinct genetic responses in plants restricted to this habitat. We also assessed the influence of life‐history parameters on patterns of genetic diversity. We found that BIF‐endemic species display similar patterns of genetic diversity and structure to other species with localised distributions. Despite often highly restricted distributions, large effective population size or clonal reproduction appears to provide these BIF‐endemic species with ecological and evolutionary resilience to environmental stochasticity. We conclude that persistence and stochasticity are key determinants of genetic diversity and its spatial structure within BIF‐associated plant species, and that these are key evolutionary processes that should be considered in understanding the biogeography of inselbergs worldwide. An increasingly important practical application of the analysis of spatial genetic structure and life history traits of plant species is to aid the design of seed sourcing scenarios that provide for long-term successful restoration. Despite this, there are few practical recommendations on how to use empirical knowledge of genetic structure and life history traits to design appropriate seed sourcing regimes and planting designs. We identified potential divergent lineages within species as an important first step in determining appropriate areas in which to source seeds. We then used a modelling approach for restoration based on patterns of genetic structure and life history traits that affect demography, dispersal and gene flow to inform the impact of number and spatial positioning of founder individuals, as well as different seed sourcing scenarios, on population growth and the initial capture and long-term maintenance of genetic diversity for restored populations. The approach is illustrated using datasets for four perennial plant species associated with the Banded Iron Formations of the semiarid midwest region of Western Australia. The approach can be tailored to any restoration site and applied to a range of species with differing patterns of genetic structure and differing life history traits. Establishing sustainable populations that maximise potential for long-term viability is a key component of successful restoration activities. We present a model based approach that uses detailed spatial, genetic, demographic, and life history data to assess the impact of different numbers, spatial positioning, and genetic compositions of founder individuals on measures of population growth and genetic diversity in restored populations over time. Understanding the response of species to past climatic changes and whether particular areas acted as refugia is critical both to our understanding of the distribution of genetic variation, and for the conservation and/or restoration of species. We used phylogeographical analyses of Acacia karina , a Banded Iron Formation (BIF) associated species, to better understand historical processes in the semiarid midwest region of Western Australia. We specifically examined whether BIF acted as refugia for the species during the colder, dryer periods of the Quaternary. The genetic structure over the entire range of A. karina was assessed using seven nuclear microsatellites (19 populations; n = 371) and 3196 bp of chloroplast sequence (19 populations; n = 190). We found high levels of nuclear and chloroplast genetic diversity and high levels of chloroplast haplotype differentiation. Genetic diversity was higher than expected for such a geographically restricted species, and similarly high levels of nuclear and chloroplast diversity were observed in BIF and non-BIF populations. The chloroplast and nuclear data suggest that BIFs have not acted as climate refugia for A. karina. Instead, long-term persistence of both BIF and non-BIF populations is supported. We used genetic analyses of Acacia karina , a Banded Iron Formation (BIF) associated species, to better understand historical processes in the semiarid midwest region of Western Australia. We used a comparative approach to assess congruence of phylogeographic and genetic structure and diversity, demographic signals, and ratios of pollen to seed dispersal, in the context of species-specific life-history traits, for two widespread sympatric perennial plant species. We sampled Grevillea paradoxa and Melaleuca nematophylla across the species' ranges throughout the Transitional Rainfall Zone and extending slightly into the Arid Zone of southwest Western Australia. Both species exhibited range-wide phylogeographic and contemporary genetic structure. Moderate haplotype diversity centred in populations on Banded Ironstone Formation (BIF) outcrops and within the Murchison River gorge supports a hypothesis of historical persistence and evolution in these mesic refugia. These features are likely to play important roles in evolutionary persistence with ongoing climate change. There was little evidence of particularly complex demographic histories for the region. More limited haplotype diversity, as well as more limited nuclear genetic diversity and connectivity, in G. paradoxa was consistent with predictions from life-history traits of shorter lifespan, lower fecundity, more limited seed dispersal, and shorter plants, but inconsistent with a prediction of greater pollen dispersal by bird pollinators. Low pollen to seed dispersal ratios suggest seed dispersal plays a greater than expected role in maintaining connectivity in this semi-arid landscape. The study highlights a need for research that integrates aspects of seed ecology and seed and pollen dispersal as well as phylogeographic and genetic patterns in Gondwanan shrublands and other semi-arid landscapes globally. Comparative studies of sympatric species that integrate both phylogeographical and population genetic approaches provide insight into how demographic events and life history traits shape adaptive potential and drive species persistence. Such studies are rare for species-rich and strongly structured environments, especially those of the southern hemisphere. For two sympatric, perennial shrubs of the south-west Western Australian semi-arid zone, Grevillea globosa and Mirbelia sp. Bursarioides, we assessed historical and contemporary genetic diversity and structure, demographic processes and ratios of pollen to seed dispersal. Phylogeographical structure was not detected and haplotype networks were star-like. Number of haplotypes, nucleotide diversity, haplotype diversity, and allelic diversity were statistically significantly lower for G. globosa than for M. sp. Bursarioides. Levels of haplotype divergence and more contemporary genetic divergence and expected heterozygosity were lower for G. globosa than for M. sp. Bursarioides, but differences were not statistically significant. Both species exhibited signals of isolation by distance and low pollen to seed dispersal ratios (5.26:1 and 6.88:1). Grevillea globosa displayed signals of historical and contemporary demographic expansion. Results imply an important role for aspects of seed ecology that impact population demography, as well as direct dispersal and a significant contribution of seed dispersal to genetic connectivity in a semi-arid landscape. The many spatial and temporal configurations in which species can be classified as rare may result in various genetic signatures, despite a persistent generalization that populations of rare species are genetically depauperate and highly differentiated. We assessed genetic diversity and differentiation in two narrow endemics with contrasting geographical distributions using 12 nuclear and six chloroplast microsatellite loci. Consistent with both marker types, the smaller, more isolated Lepidosperma sp. Parker Range populations were characterized by lower diversity and stronger divergence, relative to higher diversity and extensive connectivity among the geographically clustered L. sp. Mt Caudan populations. However, neither species exhibited low diversity, despite high inbreeding. Together, our results suggest that these species are naturally rare and have long persisted in this landscape while maintaining genetic diversity and tolerating considerable inbreeding. Their resilience is probably due to large population sizes and the flexibility afforded by employing sexual and asexual reproduction. Their contrasting genetic dynamics demonstrate that not all rare species share generalized patterns, even within the same rarity category. Moreover, these patterns were better predicted by fine-scale descriptors of rarity, population size and distribution, rather than the more typically used geographical range. Purpose: To provide a summary of the relevant literature regarding the impact of surgical cyst decortication on hypertension, renal function, and pain management in patients with autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). Methods: Data collection was conducted via a Medline search using the subject headings autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease, surgery, decortication, and marsupialization. Additional reports were derived from references included within these articles. Results: Despite a trend for improved blood pressure control after cyst decortication in some studies, this cumulative review of the literature did not provide consistent evidence supporting the role of this procedure in blood pressure management in patients with ADPKD. Surgical cyst decortication was associated with renal deterioration in a subset of patients with compromised baseline renal function but did not otherwise appear to have a significant impact on renal function in the majority of studies reviewed. Improvement in chronic pain after this procedure was ubiquitously reported across all studies examined. Conclusions: Despite a potential role in blood pressure management in the setting of ADPKD, surgical cyst decortication has not been definitively shown to alleviate hypertension in this clinical setting. Renal function does not appear to improve following this surgery. Patients with compromised baseline renal function appear to be at increased risk for further deterioration in renal function after cyst decortication, although the role of this procedure in altering the natural trajectory of renal failure in this patient subset needs further investigation. Cyst decortication is highly effective in the management of disease-related chronic pain for the majority of patients with ADPKD, providing durable pain relief in this patient population. Genetic structure among disjunct population groups of Pultenaea pauciflora was assessed to determine the evolutionary history of this species as a basis for conservation management strategies. Analysis of individuals from all extant populations using 1737 amplified length polymorphism markers revealed two highly divergent genetic entities with strong geographical structuring. Populations located at Narrogin and Brookton clustered together in Bayesian assignment analysis with every individual optimally placed in a single cluster with complete membership. Genetic differentiation between populations in these two areas was very low. Populations at Boddington were highly divergent from those located at Narrogin and Brookton. All individuals from Boddington populations were optimally placed into a second cluster with complete membership. Populations located at Boddington maintain lower levels of allelic diversity, yet greater levels of mean heterozygosity than populations located at Narrogin and Brookton. The degree of genetic differentiation and different patterns of genetic diversity strongly suggest historical divergence and separate evolutionary influences on the two lineages that occur in different ecological habitat. These Evolutionary Significant Units are likely to represent two cryptic sister taxa in the extant populations currently recognized as P. pauciflora, and the reassessment of taxonomic and conservation status of both lineages is required. © 2013 State of Western Australia. Acacia saligna is a species complex that has become invasive in a number of countries worldwide where it has caused substantial environmental and economic impacts. Understanding genetic and other factors contributing to its success may allow managers to limit future invasions of closely related species. We used three molecular markers to compare the introduced range (South Africa) to the native range (Western Australia). Nuclear markers showed that invasive populations are divergent from native populations and most closely related to a cultivated population in Western Australia. We also found incongruence between nuclear and chloroplast data that, together with the long history of cultivation of the species, suggest that introgressive hybridization (coupled with chloroplast capture) may have occurred within A. saligna. While we could not definitively prove introgression, the genetic distance between cultivated and native A. saligna populations was comparable to known interspecific divergences among other Acacia species. Therefore, cultivation, multiple large-scale introductions and possibly introgressive hybridization have rapidly given rise to the divergent genetic entity present in South Africa. This may explain the known global variation in invasiveness and inaccuracy of native bioclimatic models in predicting potential distributions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

It is essential to understand the patterns of pollen dispersal in remnant vegetation occupying highly disturbed landscapes in order to provide sustainable management options and to inform restoration programs. Direct and indirect methods of paternity analysis were used to detect genetic contamination via inter-subspecific pollen dispersal from a planted stand of nonlocal Acacia saligna ssp. saligna (ms) into remnant roadside patches of local A. saligna ssp. lindleyi (ms). Genetic contamination was detected in 25.5% (indirect paternity assignment) to 32% (direct paternity assignment) of ssp. lindleyi progeny and occurred over a distance of 1.6 km. The results support studies that suggest genetic continuity is maintained by high levels of pollen dispersal in temperate entomophilous species. The results also indicate that patchily distributed remnant populations may be exposed to substantial amounts of genetic contamination from large-scale restoration with native taxa in the highly fragmented agricultural landscape of southern Western Australia.
