Synthetic Aperture Radar Interferometry (InSAR) using satellite data is revealing a promising tool for monitoring long-term deformation phenomena in critical infrastructural systems. Nevertheless, its use in structural engineering is still quite limited and a general understanding of its potential is still missing, especially when dealing with bridge structures for which specific methods of data processing and displacement assessment with error quantification need to be developed, accounting for the type of deformation phenomena and for the orientation of the bridge. In order to partly fill this research gap, this paper proposes a post-processing methodology to derive two-dimensional displacement configurations of multi-span bridges with properly defined error bounds, using both ascending and descending Synthetic Aperture Radar acquisitions. In order to obtain an engineering meaningful estimate of the uncertainties affecting the reconstructed bridge deformations, both random and systematic errors are quantified, accounting for the orientation of the bridge with respect to the Line-Of-Sights of the satellites, the hypothesized deformation plane and the accuracy of InSAR measurements. The proposed procedure has been applied to the illustrative case study of the Albiano-Magra Bridge in Italy, collapsed on 8 April 2020. The results, referred to the monitoring period 2015–2020, demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in supporting engineering assessments. In particular, an initially temperature-induced stationary deformation phenomenon has been observed, with all spans moving upwards or downwards during summer and winter. Afterwards, displacements of increasing amplitude for two side spans have been observed during the three years preceding the failure, providing information on the possible cause of collapse. Strike-slip faults may be traced along thousands of kilometers, e.g., the San Andreas Fault (USA) or the North Anatolian Fault (Turkey). A closer look at such continental-scale strike faults reveals localized complexities in fault geometry, associated with fault segmentation, secondary faults and a change of related hazards. The North Anatolian Fault displays such complexities nearby the mega city Istanbul, which is a place where earthquake risks are high, but secondary processes are not well understood. In this paper, long-term persistent scatterer interferometry (PSI) analysis of synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data time series was used to precisely identify the surface deformation pattern associated with the faulting complexity at the prominent bend of the North Anatolian Fault near Istanbul city. We elaborate the relevance of local faulting activity and estimate the fault status (slip rate and locking depth) for the first time using satellite SAR interferometry (InSAR) technology. The studied NW-SE-oriented fault on land is subject to strike-slip movement at a mean slip rate of ~5.0 mm/year and a shallow locking depth of <1.0 km and thought to be directly interacting with the main fault branch, with important implications for tectonic coupling. Our results provide the first geodetic evidence on the segmentation of a major crustal fault with a structural complexity and associated multi-hazards near the inhabited regions of Istanbul, with similarities also to other major strike-slip faults that display changes in fault traces and mechanisms. Persistent scatterer interferometry is a widely used technique to detect and monitor slow terrain movements, with millimetric accuracy, from satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. We have recently proposed a method, named persistent scatterer pair (PSP), aimed at overcoming some limitations of standard techniques. The PSP method is characterized by the fact of exploiting only the relative properties of neighboring pairs of points for both detection and analysis of persistent scatterers (PSs), intended in the general sense of scatterers that exhibit interferometric coherence for the time period and baseline span of the acquisitions, including both point-like and distributed scatterers. Thanks to the pair-of-point approach, the PSP technique is intrinsically not affected by artifacts slowly variable in space, like those depending on atmosphere or orbits. Moreover, by exploiting a very redundant set of pair-of-point connections, the PSP approach guarantees extremely dense and accurate displacement and elevation measurements, both in correspondence of structures and when the backscattering is weak or distributed as in the case of natural terrains. In all cases, the measurements keep the full resolution of the input SAR images. In this work, the qualifying characteristics of the PSP technique are described, and several application examples and validation tests based on COSMO-SkyMed data are reported, which demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach. Between 2007 and 2008, Agenzia Spaziale Italiana (ASI) and Ministero della Difesa (Italian Ministry of Defence) launched three out of the four X-band SAR (synthetic aperture radar) satellites of the Constellation of Small Satellites for Mediterranean Basin Observation (COSMO-SkyMed) dual-use (civilian and defence) mission, dedicated to Earth observation. The results received from the utilization of the two operative satellites of the constellation reveal the significant achievement of the X-band SAR sensor and the importance of a fast response time in risk management applications. This article presents the qualitative analyses and results related to a set of risk management applications of the year 2008 by ASI and e-GEOS pertaining to China, Myanmar and Haiti. Kinematic characterization of a landslide at large, small, and detailed scale is today still rare and challenging, especially for long periods, due to the difficulty in implementing demanding ground surveys with adequate spatiotemporal coverage. In this work, the suitability of space-borne synthetic aperture radar sub-pixel offset tracking for the long-term monitoring of the Slumgullion landslide in Colorado (US) is investigated. This landslide is classified as a debris slide and has so far been monitored through ground surveys and, more recently, airborne remote sensing, while satellite images are scarcely exploited. The peculiarity of this landslide is that it is subject to displacements of several meters per year. Therefore, it cannot be monitored with traditional synthetic aperture radar differential interferometry, as this technique has limitations related to the loss of interferometric coherence and to the maximum observable displacement gradient/rate. In order to overcome these limitations, space-borne synthetic aperture radar sub-pixel offset tracking is applied to pairs of images acquired with a time span of one year between August 2011 and August 2013. The obtained results are compared with those available in the literature, both at landslide scale, retrieved through field surveys, and at point scale, using airborne synthetic aperture radar imaging and GPS. The comparison showed full congruence with the past literature. A consistency check covering the full observation period is also implemented to confirm the reliability of the technique, which results in a cheap and effective methodology for the long-term monitoring of large landslide-induced movements. Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) interferometry (InSAR) is a powerful technology to monitor slow ground surface movements. However, the extraction and interpretation of information from big sets of InSAR measurements is a complex and demanding task. In this paper, a new method is presented for automatically detecting potential instability risks affecting buildings and infrastructures, by searching for anomalies in the persistent scatterer (PS) deformations, either in the spatial or in the temporal dimensions. In the spatial dimension, in order to reduce the dataset size and improve data reliability, we utilize a hierarchical clustering method to obtain convergence points that are more trustworthy. Then, we detect deformations characterized by large values and spatial inhomogeneity. In the temporal dimension, we use a signal processing method to decompose the input into two main components: regular periodic deformations and piecewise linear deformations. After removing the periodic component, the velocity variation in each identified temporal partition is analyzed to detect anomalous velocity trends and accelerations. The method has been tested on different sites in China, based on InSAR measurements from COSMO-SkyMed data. The results, verified with in-field surveys, confirm the potential of the method for the automatic detection of deformation anomalies that could cause building or infrastructure stability problems.
