High Temperature may exert a great impact on the service life and reliability of friction materials during friction sliding. Tribological behavior of a new developed copper metal matrix composite (Cu-MMC) against a steel disc was investigated using a home-built pin-on-disc tribometer in the ambient temperature range of 25–800 °C. Detailed analyses of worn surfaces and subsurfaces were performed using scanning electron microscope, optical microscope, X-ray diffractometer and 3D optical profiler. The worn surface of Cu-MMC exhibited different features at various ambient temperatures, resulting in a significant difference in tribological properties. The friction coefficient increased slightly from 0.563 to 0.640 as the ambient temperature varied from 25 °C to 400 °C, then a further increase in the ambient temperature led to a sharp decrease in the friction coefficient to 0.323 at 800 °C. A prompt increase in the mass loss of Cu-MMC was evident with increasing the ambient temperature from 25 °C to 400 °C, and then a slight increase occurred in mass loss of Cu-MMC upon increasing the ambient temperature up to 600 °C after which a significant declining trend of Cu-MMC was observed. The worn surfaces with a rugged and fluctuant morphology contributed to the high and unstable friction coefficient, as well as the high mass loss of Cu-MMC. The dominant wear mechanisms of Cu-MMC were severe oxidation, abrasive wear and adhesive wear at 400 °C and 600 °C, then delamination wear and oxidation at 800 °C.

Compared with conventional casting process, laser direct metal deposition (LDMD) can effectively reduce component segregation in non-equiatomic high entropy alloys (HEAs). However, the non-equilibrium thermal history imparted by this method has a significant effect on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the HEA. The present work prepared non-equiatomic (FeNiCo)-(AlCrSiTi) HEAs using the LDMD process, after which some samples were subjected to a subsequent vacuum remelting (VRM) treatment. The variations in phase composition, microstructure and hardness between the HEAs processed using the LDMD or VRM methods were investigated. Differences in phase composition increased with increases in the proportion of the Al, Cr, Si and Ti components. Compared with the HEA samples processed using the VRM method, the LDMD specimens possessed much finer and simpler microstructures mainly comprising solid solution phases. At relatively high concentrations of the Al, Cr, Si and Ti components (32 at% and 40 at% in total), the HEAs processed under LDMD conditions had similar grain morphologies, intermetallic phases and microhardness values, while the VRM specimens presented completely different microstructures and properties.

Owing to the cocktail effect in high-entropy alloys, a good combination of strength and toughness of a welded joint could be theoretically achieved, by modifying the elemental composition of the filler metals with a high-entropy design. However, few studies have concentrated on this issue so far. In the present study, multi-component mixed powders of (CrMnFe)x(CoNi)y, with five types of the content ratios of the body-centered cube (BCC) and face-centered cube (FCC) forming elements, were used as filler metals to achieve dissimilar welding between 304 stainless steel and Q235 carbon steel by laser deposition welding. By comparative analysis of the microstructures and mechanical properties of the dissimilar joints, the effects of an elemental composition factor of μ (μ = x/y) on the hardness, tensile and bending properties of the dissimilar joints were explored. It was found that the elemental composition of mixed powders had an impact on the mechanical properties of dissimilar joints. Too high or too low content of BCC/FCC forming elements in filler metals cannot promote the appropriate mechanical properties. As an increase in the content of BCC forming elements, the hardness in weld zones was significantly increased, especially for the mixed powders with a high value of μ (≥7/3). The powders of (CrMnFe)5(CoNi)5 resulted in the best comprehensive mechanical properties of the dissimilar joint.

Flash−butt welded rail is widely used in railway transportation; however, the welded joint is vulnerable after a long time of service, and its damage mechanism is controversial. Here, tensile and reciprocating friction tests were carried out to analyze the mechanical and tribological behaviors between the welded joint and the base metal of a U75VG rail. The results show that flash−butt welding promotes the pearlite to transform into ferrite, leading to a relatively low hardness value but high plasticity. In addition, the yielding and strength of the all−weld−metal specimen are 385 MPa and 1090 MPa, respectively, which are about 24.51% and 7.63% lower than that of the base metal specimen. It is worth noting that the elongation of the all−weld−metal specimen is 57.1% higher than that of the base metal specimen, and more dimples and tearing ridges can be detected on the fracture morphology of the all−weld−metal specimen, while the fracture morphology of the base metal specimen is filled with shallow dimples and cleavage planes. Moreover, the weld metal has a relatively higher COF (coefficient of friction), and its fluctuation amplitude is 1.25 times higher than that of the base metal, which is due to the rougher worn surface. Furthermore, the introduction of flash−butt welding changes the wear mechanism of the U75VG rail from adhesive wear and oxidation to fatigue wear and slight oxidation, and ultimately leads to more serious damage.

Abstract Abrasive wear is a common failure phenomenon that often limits the service life of sealing elements. Evaluation and comparison of the abrasion resistance of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) were conducted using Al2O3 particles with sizes in the range 5 to 200 µm on a pin-on-flat tribo-tester under dry reciprocating sliding conditions at room temperature. Based on the examined worn surface characteristics of both PTFE and 316L stainless steel (as a counterpart) and the analyzed coefficient of friction (COF) evolutions, the wear mechanism and particle size effect have been explored in detail. The results demonstrate that the abrasive size is the main contributing factor, which can drastically impact the wear mechanism and tribological properties of tribo-pairs. The COF exhibits different evolution characteristics (trends) for different abrasive sizes. For moderate particle sizes, the COF trends become more complicated and the most evident wear of the metallic counterpart is evident. The activity behaviors of abrasives are dominated by the particle size. Particles can becomes embedded in one of the tribo-pair materials to plough-cut the counterpart, thus causing two-body abrasive wear. The abrasives can also behave as free rolling bodies, which play the role of third body to realize three-body “PTFE-abrasive-316L” abrasion. When abrasives are involved in the wear process, both the wear rate and COF of the metallic counterpart increase, but the material removal rate of the PTFE is reduced. The results obtained can offer guidelines regarding the design and protection of seals.

Abstract Background Intestinal helminth infections are a serious public health problem in developing countries. Jiangsu, an eastern coastal province of China, has an environment conducive to the transmission of intestinal parasites, and suffered human infection rates of 71.75% in 1990. Due to comprehensive anti-transmission measures undertaken throughout the province in the 1990s, the prevalence had decreased to 9.28% in 2002. In order to assess the current epidemic situation for intestinal parasitic infections in Jiangsu province, a province-wide cross-sectional survey was carried out in 2015. Methods Surveys were conducted in two main settings; rural (for soil-transmitted parasites) and urban (for Clonorchis sinensis), selected through stratified random sampling. Human infection rates were evaluated through the detection of helminth eggs or cysts (oocysts or trophozoites) of intestinal protozoa in fecal samples by microscopy. Secondary intermediate and reservoir hosts were surveyed for C. sinensis infection. Questionnaires were completed by each participant to evaluate knowledge, attitude and practice of soil-transmitted parasite and C. sinensis avoidance. Results 115 out of 30153 participants (0.38%) had intestinal helminths or protozoa. There were eight species of helminth detected and the most common parasite was the hookworm Ancylostoma duodenale. In rural settings, there were significant differences in infection rates between participants of differing economic status. In urban settings, only four cases of C. sinensis infection were detected. However, secondary intermediate and reservoir hosts were found to harbor parasites. The questionnaire survey revealed that 38.42% participants were not aware of how humans become infected by hookworms. Knowledge and awareness of C. sinensis was similarly low, with 53.22% participants combining the use of chopping boards for raw and cooked food items when preparing meals. Conclusions The prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in Jiangsu Province in eastern China has decreased from 71.57% in 1990 to 0.38% in 2015. Control measures should now focus on parasitic infections in the elderly and in children, health promotion and the development of alternative detection methods.

This paper provides a reference to determine the seal performance of metallic O-rings for a reactor pressure vessel (RPV). A nonlinear elastic-plastic model of an O-ring was constructed by the finite element method to analyze its intrinsic properties. It is also validated by experiments on scaled samples. The effects of the compression ratio, the geometrical parameters of the O-ring, and the structure parameters of the groove on the flange are discussed in detail. The results showed that the numerical analysis of the O-ring agrees well with the experimental data, the compression ratio has an important role in the distribution and magnitude of contact stress, and a suitable gap between the sidewall and groove can improve the sealing capability of the O-ring. After the optimization of the sealing structure, some key parameters of the O-ring (i.e., compression ratio, cross-section diameter, wall thickness, sidewall gap) have been recommended for application in megakilowatt class nuclear power plants. Furthermore, air tightness and thermal cycling tests were performed to verify the rationality of the finite element method and to reliably evaluate the sealing performance of a RPV.

The influence of surface gas nitriding on wheel/rail rolling contact fatigue and wear behavior of CL60 wheel was studied on a new rolling contact fatigue/wear tester (JD-DRCF/M). The failure mechanisms of the wheel/rail surface after the gas nitriding and without gas nitriding on the wheel surface were compared and analyzed. The results show that the wheel with gas nitriding could form a dense and hard white bright layer which was approximately 25 μm thick and a diffusion layer which was approximately 70 μm thick on the wheel surface. Thus, the gas nitriding on the railway wheel not only significantly improved the wear resistance on the surface of the wheel, but also effectively reduced the wear of the rail; the results show that the material loss reduced by 58.05% and 10.77%, respectively. After the wheel surface was subjected to gas nitriding, the adhesive coefficient between the wheel/rail was reduced by 11.7% in dry conditions, and was reduced by 18.4% in water media, but even so, the wheel with gas nitriding still could keep a satisfactory adhesive coefficient between the wheel/rail systems, which can prevent the occurrence of phenomena such as wheel-slip. In short, the gas nitriding on the wheel surface can effectively reduce the wear, and improve the rolling contact fatigue resistance of the wheel/rail system. This study enlarges the application field of gas nitriding and provides a new method for the surface protection of railway wheels in heavy-duty transportation.

Two kinds of phenol- and N- containing borate ester, BTEB and BMEB have good hydrolysis stability due to the B-N coordination bond. The PB value improved by 60.7% and 67.6% respectively at 0.5wt% BTEB, BMEB in rapeseed oil. Their antiwear effect increases with the increase of adding content, and BMEB is better than BTEB. The friction-reducing effect of BTEB is better than BMEB. All additives formed a protective film which containing BOx, FeOx and other organic nitrogen compounds. The better capacities of BMEB may due to the complex boundary lubricating film which contain ferrous sulfate, ferrous sulfide. All additives possessed good antioxidation effect, and it increased the oxidation activation energy than rapeseed oil by 51.15% and 78.82% respectively at 0.25wt%.

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a promising approach for the joining of magnesium alloys. Although many Mg alloys have been successfully joined by FSW, it is far from industrial applications due to the texture variation and low mechanical properties. This short review deals with the fundamental understanding of weak zones from the viewpoint of texture analysis in FSW Mg alloys, especially for butt welding. Firstly, a brief review of the microstructure and mechanical properties of FSW Mg alloys is presented. Secondly, microstructure and texture evolutions in weak zones are analyzed and discussed based on electron backscatter diffraction data and Schmid factors. Then, how to change the texture and strengthen the weak zones is also presented. Finally, the review concludes with some future challenges and research directions related to the texture in FSW Mg alloys. The purpose of the paper is to provide a basic understanding on the location of weak zones as well as the weak factors related to texture to improve the mechanical properties and promote the industrial applications of FSW Mg alloys.

As material for key parts applied in the aerospace field, the Cu-Be-Co-Ni alloy sustains cyclic plastic deformation in service, resulting in the low cycle fatigue (LCF) failure. The LCF behaviors are closely related to the precipitation states of the alloy, but the specific relevance is still unknown. To provide reasonable regulation of the LCF properties for various service conditions, the effect of precipitation states on the LCF behaviors of the alloy was investigated. It is found that the alloy composed fully of non-shearable γ′ precipitates has higher fatigue crack initiation resistance, resulting in a longer fatigue life under LCF process with low total strain amplitude. The alloy with fine shearable γ′I precipitates presents higher fatigue crack propagation resistance, leading to a longer fatigue life under LCF process with high total strain amplitude. The cyclic stress response behavior of the alloy depends on the competition between the kinematic hardening and isotropic softening. The fine shearable γ′I precipitates retard the decrease of effective stress during cyclic loading, causing cyclic hardening of the alloy. The present work would help to design reasonable precipitation states of the alloy for various cyclic loading conditions to guarantee its safety in service.

Efficient document recognition and sharing remain challenges in the healthcare, insurance, and finance sectors. One solution to this problem has been the use of deep learning techniques to automatically extract structured information from paper documents. Specifically, the structured extraction of a medical examination report (MER) can enhance medical efficiency, data analysis, and scientific research. While current methods focus on reconstructing table bodies, they often overlook table headers, leading to incomplete information extraction. This paper proposes MSIE-Net (multi-stage-structured information extraction network), a novel structured information extraction method, leveraging refined attention transformers and associated entity detection to enhance comprehensive MER information retrieval. MSIE-Net includes three stages. First, the RVI-LayoutXLM (refined visual-feature independent LayoutXLM) targets key information extraction. In this stage, the refined attention accentuates the interaction between different modalities by adjusting the attention score at the current position using previous position information. This design enables the RVI-LayoutXLM to learn more specific contextual information to improve extraction performance. Next, the associated entity detection module, RIFD-Net (relevant intra-layer fine-tuned detection network), identifies each test item’s location within the MER table body. Significantly, the backbone of RIFD-Net incorporates the intra-layer feature adjustment module (IFAM) to extract global features while homing in on local areas, proving especially sensitive for inspection tasks with dense and long bins. Finally, structured post-processing based on coordinate aggregation links the outputs from the prior stages. For the evaluation, we constructed the Chinese medical examination report dataset (CMERD), based on real medical scenarios. MSIE-Net demonstrated competitive performance in tasks involving key information extraction and associated entity detection. Experimental results validate MSIE-Net’s capability to successfully detect key entities in MER and table images with various complex layouts, perform entity relation extraction, and generate structured labels, laying the groundwork for intelligent medical documentation.
