Abstract

The torsional fatigue behavior of a high-strength spring steel, SWOSC-V, was investigated. Of particular interest were the influences of small scratches and superimposed static shear stress in the very high cycle fatigue regime. To achieve the research objectives, an ultrasonic torsional fatigue testing machine was developed. S-N curves showed the fatigue limit for the tested material condition (i.e. with no residual stresses at specimen surface). This study revealed that a notable influence of the stress ratio, R, on the torsional fatigue behavior was not explicitly recognized. Concerning the influence of small scratches, it was found that the area -parameter model can predict the lower bound of the torsional fatigue limit, irrespective of the value of R. Abstract

In compression coil springs subjected to cyclic load, fatigue cracks can sometimes initiate and propagate from scratch-like small defects produced during the manufacturing process and degrade the fatigue strength. In this study, torsional and rotating bending fatigue tests were conducted to examine the fatigue behavior of a high-strength spring steel (JIS G 3561, SWOSC-V) in the presence of small scratches. Abstract

Intravenous lipoma of the inferior vena cava is an incidental finding on contrast-enhanced computed tomography in 0.5% of individuals. We report a case of multiple intravenous lipomas discovered during diagnosis of cholangitis in a 39-year-old woman. Imaging revealed three fatty masses that appeared connected by cordlike structures: one in the left renal vein with wide mural attachment and two in the inferior vena cava, the higher of which was mobile. We hypothesize that these originated as a single lipoma that subsequently divided into three distinct masses. Because mobile masses may cause pulmonary thromboembolism, surgery is recommended in these cases.

Abstract

To elucidate whether the pharmacokinetics (PK) and pharmacodynamics (PD) of sildenafil are influenced differently when it is coadministered with bosentan (S+B) or with ambrisentan (S+A), we evaluated the PK and PD profiles of sildenafil before and after 4-5 weeks of S+A or S+B treatment in patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension. The area under the plasma concentration-time curve of sildenafil was significantly higher in S+A treatment than in S+B treatment (165.8 ng•h/mL vs. 396.8 ng•h/mL, P = 0.018) and the oral clearance of sildenafil was significantly lower after S+A treatment than after S+B treatment (120.6 L/h/kg vs. 50.4 L/h/kg, P = 0.018). In the PD study, incremental shuttle walking distance was superior during treatment with S+A than during treatment with S+B (S+B; 280 m vs. S+A; 340 m, P = 0.042). Abstract

Balancing trimmer was developed to be used safety and easy handling. But vibration of the trimmer was evaluated to be bad. In this study, we investigated which frequency band affects the bad vibration feeling and tried to reduce the vibration. Through vibration measurement analysis to the handle vibrations of several trimmers, high frequency vibration from 100 to 250 Hz was very large. Also, handle pipe vibration characteristic was found to have high influence to the vibration. Then, we tried to decrease the resonance frequency and response level at the high frequency to improve vibration characteristic of the handle pipe considering not to increase the total weight. Thin handle pipe, concentrated mass, and modification of rubber bush were applied to realize it. As a result, the high frequency vibration of the handle of balancing trimmer was reduced so much without any additional total weight. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Summary Background Systemic amyloidosis occurs as a result of amyloid deposition in various tissues. The amyloid fibrils in systemic amyloidosis have been reported to originate from immunoglobulin light chains. Objectives We studied the composition of amyloid fibrils from two patients with plasma cell-associated systemic amyloidosis (PASA). Methods A double immunofluorescence study of the lesional skin of PASA was undertaken. Amyloid proteins were extracted with distilled water from one case of PASA. Results The double immunofluorescence study showed that anti-λ light chain and anti-β2 microglobulin antibodies mostly reacted with the same area of amyloid deposit. Amyloid deposits from two patients with PASA who had never undergone haemodialysis showed a positive reaction with the antibodies for β2 microglobulin as well as immunoglobulin λ light chain. By the use of immunoblot assay of amyloid fibril proteins, polypeptides immunoreactive with antiγ light chain antibody (29 kDa) and with anti-β2 microglobulin antibody (12 kDa) were detected. We report a patient with primary lymphocutaneous Nocardia brasiliensis infection affecting the face and left arm. The mode of infection was via skin abrasions which occurred 2 weeks prior to the development of the skin lesions. Treatment with intravenous minocycline for 4 weeks resulted in a cure. 41. Effects of Amiloride on Distal Renal Tubule Sodium and Calcium Absorption: Dependence on Luminal pH.

Abstract

The goal of our study was to examine the effects of amiloride on distal renal tubule calcium and sodium absorption at low and high luminal pH. In vivo microperfusion of distal convoluted tubules were performed on rats. Total Ca and Na concentrations in perfusion and collected fluids were measured by atomic absorption spectrometry. When tubules were perfused with low pH perfusate (pH = 5.6), net calcium absorption (JCa) averaged 5.4 pmol/min. With high pH perfusate (pH = 7.1), JCa was significantly higher averaging 8.9 pmol/min. (P < 0.01). In contrast, net sodium absorption (JNa) was not affected by luminal pH (231 pmol/min. versus 237 pmol/min.). At low luminal pH, 10-4 M amiloride analogue (5-N-methyl-N-isobutyl amiloride) (MIA) inhibited sodium absorption but stimulated calcium absorption. At high luminal pH MIA still inhibited Na absorption but it had no effect on calcium absorption. Thus, the natriuretic effect of amiloride appears to be independent of luminal pH, while the amiloride-stimulated distal calcium absorption is observed at low but not at high luminal pH. Abstract

The machining producibility evaluation model (MEM) was developed to assess design quality quantitatively for easier processing of parts and products. It is constructed on the basis of product and process modelling and covers cutting and grinding, metal working, welding, moulding, die-casting and casting. The main features of the MEM are: 1. Quantitative evaluation is carried out by means of an easy-to-understand 100-point scale, and processing cost is estimated within a ±15 per cent error. 2. It is an easy method to both learn and use, employing approximately 20 basic symbols and five supplementary elements.
