The use of magnetic garnets in new technologies such as spintronic devices requires fine-structured thin films. Classical fabrication techniques for these materials, typically physical vapor deposition methods, lead to excellent magnetic behavior. However, availability and scalability for potential applications are well restricted. In this study, we propose an innovative approach to fabricating Yttrium Iron Garnet thin films with precise thickness control achieved through iterative layer deposition via a chemical synthesis route. Remarkably, the iterative deposition process results in films exhibiting exceptional crystallinity. Magnetic characterization provides saturation magnetization and coercivity values on par with those reported in literature, summed to narrow ferromagnetic resonance lines. Therefore, in this work we demonstrate the viability of polymer assisted deposition as a promising alternative thinking about scalability to conventional deposition techniques for this material. Epitaxial strain modifies the physical properties of thin films deposited on single-crystal substrates. In a previous work, we demonstrated that in the case of La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 thin films the strain induced by the substrate can produce the segregation of a non-ferromagnetic layer (NFL) at the top surface of ferromagnetic epitaxial La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 for a critical value of the tetragonality τ, defined as τ = |c − a|a, of τC ≈ 0.024. Although preliminary analysis suggested its antiferromagnetic nature, to date a complete characterization of the magnetic state of such an NFL has not been performed. Here, we present a comprehensive magnetic characterization of the strain-induced segregated NFL. The field-cooled magnetic hysteresis loops exhibit an exchange bias mechanism below T ≈ 80 K, which is well below the Curie temperature of the ferromagnetic La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 layer. The exchange bias and coercive fields decay exponentially with temperature, which is commonly accepted to describe spin-glass (SG) behavior. The signatures of slow dynamics were confirmed by slow spin relaxation over a wide temperature regime. Low-energy muon spectroscopy experiments directly evidence the slowing down of the magnetic moments below ~100 K in the NFL. The experimental results indicate the SG nature of the NFL. This SG state can be understood within the context of the competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions of similar energies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We show that an optimized growth of magnetic layer/non-magnetic layer stacks allows for the improvement of the spin-to-charge conversion efficiency. From the analysis of the voltage signal generated in spin pumping experiments due to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) on Y3Fe5O12 (YIG)/Bi stacks, we have determined values for the spin Hall angle and the spin-diffusion length in Bi of 0.0068(8) and 17.8(9) nm, respectively. Based on these results, we have also studied the influence of aging on the spin-to-charge conversion efficiency by performing spin pumping experiments on YIG/Bi stacks after exposing the samples to ambient conditions for several days and up to 150 days. We have found that in YIG/Bi samples with Bi thicknesses around or below the spin-diffusion length, the ISHE voltage signal is still above 80% of its initial value after 100 days. Spin Hall and Rashba–Edelstein effects, which are spin-to-charge conversion phenomena due to spin–orbit coupling (SOC), are attracting increasing interest as pathways to manage rapidly and at low consumption cost the storage and processing of a large amount of data in spintronic devices as well as more efficient energy harvesting by spin-caloritronics devices. Materials with large SOC, such as heavy metals (HMs), are traditionally employed to get large spin-to-charge conversion. More recently, the use of graphene (gr) in proximity with large SOC layers has been proposed as an efficient and tunable spin transport channel. Here, we explore the role of a graphene monolayer between Co and a HM and its interfacial spin transport properties by means of thermo-spin measurements. The gr/HM (Pt and Ta) stacks have been prepared on epitaxial Ir(111)/Co(111) structures grown on sapphire crystals, in which the spin detector (i.e., top HM) and the spin injector (i.e., Co) are all grown in situ under controlled conditions and present clean and sharp interfaces. We find that a gr monolayer retains the spin current injected into the HM from the bottom Co layer. This has been observed by detecting a net reduction in the sum of the spin Seebeck and interfacial contributions due to the presence of gr and independent from the spin Hall angle sign of the HM used. In this report, a successful thermodynamical model was employed to understand the structural transition in Er5Si4, able to explain the decoupling of the magnetic and structural transition. This was achieved by DFT calculations, which were used to determine the energy differences at 0 K, using a LSDA+U approximation. It was found that the M structure is the stable phase at low temperatures, as verified experimentally with a value of ΔF0=-0.262 eV. Finally, a variation of Seebeck coefficient (~6 μV) was determined at the structural transition, which allows to conclude that the electronic entropy variation is negligible in the transition. Magnetic materials with strong spin-lattice coupling are a powerful set of candidates for multifunctional applications because of their multiferroic, magnetocaloric (MCE), magnetostrictive and magnetoresistive effects. In these materials there is a strong competition between two states (where a state comprises an atomic and an associated magnetic structure) that leads to the occurrence of phase transitions under subtle variations of external parameters, such as temperature, magnetic field and hydrostatic pressure. In this review a general method combining detailed magnetic measurements/analysis and first principles calculations with the purpose of estimating the phase transition temperature is presented with the help of two examples (Gd5Si2Ge2 and Tb5Si2Ge2). It is demonstrated that such method is an important tool for a deeper understanding of the (de)coupled nature of each phase transition in the materials belonging to the R5(Si,Ge)4 family and most possibly can be applied to other systems. The exotic Griffiths-like phase in the framework of the R5(SixGe1-x)4 compounds is reviewed and its generalization as a requisite for strong phase competitions systems that present large magneto-responsive properties is proposed. We have combined optical and focusedion beam lithographies toproduce large aspect-ratio (length-to-width >300) single-crystalnanowiresof La2/3Ca1/3MnO3that preserve theirfunctional properties. Remarkably, an enhanced magnetoresistance valueof 34% in an applied magnetic field of 0.1 T in the narrowest 150nm nanowire is obtained. The strain release at the edges togetherwith a destabilization of the insulating regions is proposed to accountfor this behavior. The pattern of charge modulations and local anisotropies below the Verwey transition has been determined and quantified in high-quality Fe3O4 single crystals and thin films grown on MgO by using resonant X-ray scattering at the Fe K-edge. The energy, polarization and azimuthal angle dependencies of an extensive set of reflections with potential sensitivity to charge or local anisotropy orderings have been analyzed to explore their origins. A charge disproportion on octahedral B sites of 0.20 ± 0.05 e− with [0 0 1] and cubic periodicities has been confirmed, while no significant charge disproportion has been obtained with [0 0 1/2] cubic periodicity. Additional charge modulations in the monoclinic a-b plane are also present. In addition, the occurrence of new forbidden (1, 1, 0) and (0, 0, 2 n + 1/2) cubic reflections that arise from the anisotropy of the local structure around different tetrahedral and octahedral Fe atoms is shown. This complex pattern of weak charge modulations and local anisotropies is fully compatible with the low-temperature crystal structure refined in the non-polar C2/ c space group and disproves any bimodal charge disproportion of the octahedral Fe atoms. Spin-to-charge conversion is a central process in the emerging field of spintronics. One of its main applications is the electrical detection of spin currents, and for this, the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) has become one of the preferred methods. We studied the thickness dependence of the ISHE in iridium oxide (IrO 2 ) thin films, producing spin currents by means of the spin Seebeck effect in γ − Fe 2 O 3 /IrO 2 bilayers prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD). The observed ISHE charge current density, which features a maximum as a consequence of the spin diffusion length scale, follows the typical behaviour of spin-Hall-related phenomena. By fitting to the theory developed by Castel et al., we find that the spin Hall angle θ SH scales proportionally to the thin film resistivity, θ SH ∝ ρ c , and obtains a value for the spin diffusion length λ IrO 2 of λ IrO 2 = 3.3 (7) nm. In addition, we observe a negative θ SH for every studied thickness and temperature, unlike previously reported works, which brings the possibility of tuning the desired functionality of high-resistance spin-Hall-based devices. We attribute this behaviour to the textured growth of the sample in the context of a highly anisotropic value of the spin Hall conductivity in this material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Graphene and borophene are highly attractive two-dimensional materials with outstanding physical properties. In this study we employed combined atomistic continuum multi-scale modeling to explore the effective thermal conductivity of polymer nanocomposites made of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) polymer as the matrix and graphene and borophene as nanofillers. PDMS is a versatile polymer due to its chemical inertia, flexibility and a wide range of properties that can be tuned during synthesis. We first conducted classical Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations to calculate the thermal conductance at the interfaces between graphene and PDMS and between borophene and PDMS. Acquired results confirm that the interfacial thermal conductance between nanosheets and polymer increases from the single-layer to multilayered nanosheets and finally converges, in the case of graphene, to about 30 MWm−2 K−1 and, for borophene, up to 33 MWm−2 K−1. The data provided by the atomistic simulations were then used in the Finite Element Method (FEM) simulations to evaluate the effective thermal conductivity of polymer nanocomposites at the continuum level. We explored the effects of nanofiller type, volume content, geometry aspect ratio and thickness on the nanocomposite effective thermal conductivity. As a very interesting finding, we found that borophene nanosheets, despite having almost two orders of magnitude lower thermal conductivity than graphene, can yield very close enhancement in the effective thermal conductivity in comparison with graphene, particularly for low volume content and small aspect ratios and thicknesses. We conclude that, for the polymer-based nanocomposites, significant improvement in the thermal conductivity can be reached by improving the bonding between the fillers and polymer, or in other words, by enhancing the thermal conductance at the interface. By taking into account the high electrical conductivity of borophene, our results suggest borophene nanosheets as promising nanofillers to simultaneously enhance the polymers' thermal and electrical conductivity. In this paper, an inorganic polymer composite film is proposed as an effective radiative cooling device. The inherent absorption is enhanced by choosing an appropriately sized SiO2 microsphere with a diameter of 6 μm. The overall absorption at the transparent window of the atmosphere is higher than 90%, as the concentration of SiO2–PMMA composite is 35 wt%. As a result, an effective radiative device is made by a spin coating process. Moreover, the device is stacked on the cold side of a thermoelectric generator chip. It is found that the temperature gradient can be increased via the effective radiative cooling process. An enhanced Seebeck effect is observed, and the corresponding output current can be enhanced 1.67-fold via the photonic-assisted radiative cooling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Control and analysis of the crystal phase in semiconductor nanowires are of high importance due to the new possibilities for strain and band gap engineering for advanced nanoelectronic and nanophotonic devices. In this letter, we report the growth of the self-catalyzed GaP nanowires with a high concentration of wurtzite phase by molecular beam epitaxy on Si (111) and investigate their crystallinity. Varying the growth temperature and V/III flux ratio, we obtained wurtzite polytype segments with thicknesses in the range from several tens to 500 nm, which demonstrates the high potential of the phase bandgap engineering with highly crystalline self-catalyzed phosphide nanowires. The formation of rotational twins and wurtzite polymorph in vertical nanowires was observed through complex approach based on transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, and reciprocal space mapping. The phase composition, volume fraction of the crystalline phases, and wurtzite GaP lattice parameters were analyzed for the nanowires detached from the substrate. It is shown that the wurtzite phase formation occurs only in the vertically-oriented nanowires during vapor-liquid-solid growth, while the wurtzite phase is absent in GaP islands parasitically grown via the vapor-solid mechanism. The proposed approach can be used for the quantitative evaluation of the mean volume fraction of polytypic phase segments in heterostructured nanowires that are highly desirable for the optimization of growth technologies. Chitin, a natural polysaccharide polymer, forms highly crystalline nanofibers and is expected to have sophisticated engineering applications. In particular, for development of next-generation heat-transfer and heat-insulating materials, analysis of the thermal conductivity is important, but the thermal conductivity properties of chitin nanofiber materials have not been reported. The thermal conductivity properties of chitin nanofiber materials are difficult to elucidate without excluding the effect of adsorbed water and analyzing the influence of surface amino groups. In this study, we aimed to accurately evaluate the thermal conductivity properties of chitin nanofiber films by changing the content of surface amino groups and measuring the thermal diffusivity under dry conditions. Chitin and deacetylated-chitin nanofiber films with surface deacetylation of 5.8% and 25.1% showed in-plane thermal conductivity of 0.82 and 0.73 W/mK, respectively. Taking into account that the films had similar crystalline structures and almost the same moisture contents, the difference in the thermal conductivity was concluded to only depend on the amino group content on the fiber surfaces. Our methodology for measuring the thermal diffusivity under conditioned humidity will pave the way for more accurate analysis of the thermal conductivity performance of hydrophilic materials. Reversible structural transformations between perovskite (PV) ABO3−δ and brownmillerite (BM) ABO2.5 (A = Ca2+, Sr2+; B = Fe4+/3, Co4+/3+) oxides can be induced by topotactic oxygen exchange at moderate temperatures under reducing/oxidizing conditions. The combination of a large oxide‐ion conductivity and a small free energy difference between the 4+/3+ oxidation states of many 3d transition metal ions enables these topotactic transformations. Herein, it is demonstrated that the electric field produced by a voltage‐biased atomic force microscopy tip can induce such transformation between PV SrFeO3−δ and BM SrFeO2.5 at room temperature and with sub‐micrometer spatial resolution. Interestingly, the structural transformation is kept after the electric field is removed, allowing a nonvolatile control of the local chemical, electrical, optical, and magnetic properties. Thus, the results presented in this paper open the door for the fabrication of stable ionic‐based devices through the electric field patterning of different crystallographic phases. The spin transport and spin-to-charge current conversion properties of bismuth are investigated using permalloy/copper/bismuth (Py/Cu/Bi) lateral spin valve structures. The spin current is strongly absorbed at the surface of Bi, leading to ultrashort spin-diffusion lengths. A spin-to-charge current conversion is measured, which is attributed to the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect at the Cu/Bi interface. The spin-current-induced charge current is found to change direction with increasing temperature. A theoretical analysis relates this behavior to the complex spin structure and dispersion of the surface states at the Fermi energy. The understanding of this phenomenon opens novel possibilities to exploit spin-orbit coupling to create, manipulate, and detect spin currents in two-dimensional systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accessing the regime of coherent phonon propagation in nanostructures opens enormous possibilities to control the thermal conductivity in energy harvesting devices, phononic circuits, etc. In this paper we show that coherent phonons contribute substantially to the thermal conductivity of LaCoO 3 /SrTiO 3 oxide superlattices, up to room temperature. We show that their contribution can be tuned through small variations of the superlattice periodicity, without changing the total superlattice thickness. Using this strategy, we tuned the thermal conductivity by 20% at room temperature. We also discuss the role of interface mixing and epitaxial relaxation as an extrinsic, material dependent key parameter for understanding the thermal conductivity of oxide superlattices.

We studied in detail the in-plane magnetic properties of heterostructures based on a ferroelectric BaTiO 3 overlayer deposited on a ferromagnetic La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 film grown epitaxially on pseudocubic (001)-oriented SrTiO 3 , (LaAlO 3 ) 0.3 (Sr 2 TaAlO 6 ) 0.7 and LaAlO 3 substrates. In this configuration, the combination of both functional perovskites constitutes an artificial multiferroic system with potential applications in spintronic devices based on the magnetoelectric effect. La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 single layers and BaTiO 3 /La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 bilayers using the pulsed-laser deposition technique. We analyzed the films structurally through X-ray reciprocal space maps and high-angle annular dark field microscopy, and magnetically via thermal demagnetization curves and in-plane magnetization versus applied magnetic field loops at room temperature. Our results indicate that the BaTiO 3 layer induces an additional strain in the La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 layers close to their common interface. The presence of BaTiO 3 on the surface of tensile-strained La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 films transforms the in-plane biaxial magnetic anisotropy present in the single layer into an in-plane uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Our experimental evidence suggests that this change in the magnetic anisotropy only occurs in tensile-strained La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 film and is favored by an additional strain on the La 2/3 Sr 1/3 MnO 3 layer promoted by the BaTiO 3 film. These findings reveal an additional mechanism that alters the magnetic behavior of the ferromagnetic layer, and consequently, deserves further in-depth research to determine how it can modify the magnetoelectric coupling of this hybrid multiferroic system., (Copyright © 2020, Ordóñez et al.; licensee Beilstein-Institut.)

A novel mechanism of ferroelectricity driven by off-centering magnetic Mn(4+) ions was proposed in (Sr1-xBax)MnO3, in its ideal perovskite phase, which yields enormous expectations in the search for strong magnetoelectric materials. Still, the desired perovskite phase has never been stabilized in thin films due to its extremely metastable character. Here, we report on a thorough study of the perovskite phase stabilization of (Sr1-xBax)MnO3 thin films, 0.2 ≤ x ≤ 0.5, grown by pulsed laser deposition onto (001)-oriented perovskite substrates. X-ray diffraction measurements and scanning transmission electron microscopy reveal that, under appropriate deposition conditions, the perovskite phase is fully stabilized over the nonferroelectric hexagonal phase, despite the latter being increasingly favored on increasing Ba-content. Moreover, we have managed to grow epitaxial coherent cube-on-cube (Sr1-xBax)MnO3 films upon strains ranging from 0% to 4%. Our results become a milestone in further studying perovskite (Sr1-xBax)MnO3 thin films and pave the way for tailoring ferroic and magnetoelectric properties either by strain engineering or Ba-doping.

We report magnetic and electronic transport measurements across epitaxial bilayers of ferromagnetic insulator LaCoO3 and half-metallic ferromagnet La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LCO/LSMO: 3.5 nm/20 nm) fabricated by a chemical solution method. The I-V curves at room temperature and 4K measured with conducting atomic force microscopy (CAFM) on well-defined patterned areas exhibit the typical features of a tunneling process. The curves have been fitted to the Simmons model to determine the height (φ) and width (s) of the insulating LCO barrier. The results yield φ = 0.40 ± 0.05 eV (0.50 ± 0.01 eV) at room temperature (4K) and s = 3 nm, in good agreement with the structural analysis. Our results demonstrate that this chemical method is able to produce epitaxial heterostructures with the quality required for this type of fundamental studies and applications.

Bismuth nanostructures of initial lateral size of about 150 nm were successfully electromigrated at room temperature under high vacuum conditions through the application of voltage ramps and accurate control of their conductance. The imaging of the nanogap formation was followed by scanning electron microscopy. An appropriate design of the initial Bi nanostructures has made the electromigration process of semimetallic Bi feasible. Beyond the intrinsic interest in the generation of Bi structures with size tailored at the nanoscale, remarkable features have been observed in the time-dependent conductance curves of the Bi nanoconstrictions. In particular, sub-quantum conductance plateaus can be detected before the rupture of the constriction. An alternative procedure to study the transport through Bi nanoconstrictions has been explored using a focused-Ga-ion etching process with simultaneous control of the conductance. This second approach confirms the transport behavior observed in electromigrated Bi nanoconstrictions.
