We report an extensive high-sensitivity search for axion dark matter above 1 GHz at the Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research (CAPP). The cavity resonant search, exploiting the coupling between axions and photons, explored the frequency (mass) range of 1.025 GHz (4.24 μeV) to 1.185 GHz (4.91 μeV). We have introduced a number of innovations in this field, demonstrating the practical approach of optimizing all the relevant parameters of axion haloscopes, extending presently available technology. The CAPP 12 T magnet with an aperture of 320 mm made of Nb_{3}Sn and NbTi superconductors surrounding a 37 l ultralight-weight copper cavity is expected to convert Dine-Fischler-Srednicki-Zhitnitsky axions into approximately 10^{2} microwave photons per second. A powerful dilution refrigerator, capable of keeping the core system below 40 mK, combined with quantum-noise-limited readout electronics, achieved a total system noise of about 200 mK or below, which corresponds to a background of roughly 4×10^{3} photons per second within the axion bandwidth. The combination of all those improvements provides unprecedented search performance, imposing the most stringent exclusion limits on axion-photon coupling in this frequency range to date. These results also suggest an experimental capability suitable for highly sensitive searches for axion dark matter above 1 GHz.

Summary: Li-ion battery mishaps are primarily attributed to short circuits, which missed early detection. In this study, a method is introduced to address this issue by analyzing the voltage relaxation, after initiating a rest period. The voltage equilibration arising from solid-concentration profile relaxation is expressed by a double-exponential model, whose time constants, τ1 & τ2, capture the initial, rapid exponential contour and the long-term relaxation, respectively. By tracking τ2, which is very sensitive to small leakage currents, it is possible to detect a short early on and estimate the short resistance. This method, validated with experiments on commercial batteries induced with short circuits of varying extents, has >90% prediction accuracy and enables clear differentiation between different short severities, while factoring in the influence of temperature, state of charge (SOC), state of health (SOH), and idle currents. The method is applicable across different battery chemistries and form factors, offering precise and robust nascent-stage short detection-estimation for on-device implementation.

Designing high-resolution displays based on colloidal quantum dots remains a challenge. Here, the authors demonstrate a photo-patterning method to develop CdSe-based core-shell quantum dots patterns of red, green and blue colours with diameters ranging from 7 to 20 nm and resolution of 1400 pixels per inch.

To enable the large-area manufacture of solution-processed organic electronics, direct photocrosslinking processes has emerged as a promising technology solution. Here, the authors report an efficient universal crosslinking agent for micropatterning of stacked multi-layered organic electronics.

Lepton-flavor violation (LFV) has been discovered in the neutrino sector by neutrino oscillation experiments. The minimal extension of the Standard Model (SM) to include neutrino masses allows LFV in the charged sector (CLFV) at the loop level, but at rates that are too small to be experimentally observed. Lepton-number violation (LNV) is explicitly forbidden even in the minimally extended SM, so the observation of an LNV process would be unambiguous evidence of physics beyond the SM. The search for the LNV and CLFV process μ−+N(A,Z)→e++N′(A,Z−2) (referred to as μ−→e+) complements 0νββ decay searches, and is sensitive to potential flavor effects in the neutrino mass-generation mechanism. A theoretical motivation for μ−→e+ is presented along with a review of the status of past μ−→e+ experiments and future prospects. Special attention is paid to an uncertain and potentially dominant background for these searches, namely, radiative muon capture (RMC). The RMC high energy photon spectrum is theoretically understudied and existing measurements insufficiently constrain this portion of the spectrum, leading to potentially significant impacts on current and future μ−→e+ work.

The determination of a suitable sensor location on quadrotor drones is a very important issue for chemical reconnaissance platforms because the magnitude and direction of air velocity is different for each location. In this study, we investigated a customized chemical reconnaissance system consisting of a quadrotor drone and a chip-sized chemical sensor for detecting dimethyl-methylphosphonate (DMMP; a Sarin simulant) and investigated the chemical detection properties with respect to the sensor position through indoor experiments and particle image velocimetry (PIV) analysis of the system. The PIV results revealed an area free of vortex–vortex interaction between the drone rotors, where there was distinctly stable and uniform chemical detection of DMMP. The proposed chemical reconnaissance system was found to be realistic for practical application.

COMET is an experiment at J-PARC, Japan, which will search for neutrinoless conversion of muons into electrons in the field of a nucleus (μ− + N → e− + N); a lepton flavor violating process. The experimental sensitivity goal for this process is order of 10−15 for Phase-I and 10−17 for Phase-II experiment, which is a factor of 100–10,000 improvements correspondingly over existing limits. Recent progresses in facility and detector development are presented, along with COMET Phase-I and Phase-II experimental schedule.

The Center for Axion and Precision Physics Research at the Institute for Basic Science is searching for axion dark matter using ultralow temperature microwave resonators. We report the exclusion of the axion mass range 10.7126-10.7186 μeV with near Kim-Shifman-Vainshtein-Zakharov (KSVZ) coupling sensitivity and the range 10.16-11.37 μeV with about 9 times larger coupling at 90% confidence level. This is the first axion search result in these ranges. It is also the first with a resonator physical temperature of less than 40 mK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
