Abstract

Iron oxide nanoparticles are coated with a polymer synthesized from the monomers of styrene, divinylbenzene, and vinylbenzylchloride and the resultant polymer microspheres are measured by scanning electron microscopy. The addition of nanoparticles by mass has decreased the size of the microspheres and has increased the polydispersity, indicating that the particles are not just incorporated into the polymer matrix but has acted as nucleation sites to begin the polymerization process.
