To address the problem of the serious capacity fading in lithium–sulfur batteries, a multi‐functional PEO(polyethylene oxide)/LiFSI (lithium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide)/PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) (PLP) gel polymer electrolyte is exploited by coating PLP on a carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based sulfur cathode (PLP‐S/CNTs) with a controlled thermal annealing process. The annealing process leads to the conformal infusion of PLP through the matrix of S/CNTs with retaining the amorphous phase of the PLP, which enhance the rate performance compared to the bare S/CNTs. The PLP coating drives the transformation of more elemental sulfur to Li2S2/Li2S without forming intermediary product by restraining soluble‐polysulfides formation. Furthermore, the PLP coating successfully inhibits the dissolution of Li2Sx (x > 4) in PEO and prevents the loss of active material in the cathode, which is confirmed by density functional theory calculations. Comprehensively, the PLP coating applied to the surface of the S/CNTs cathode exhibit significantly suppressed shuttle effect and greatly improve long‐term cycle stability of the lithium–sulfur battery. The synthesized PLP‐coated S/CNTs composite cathode demonstrates a high specific capacity of 573.6 mAh g−1 at a current density of 0.5 C after 1 000 cycles, even achieving 318.1 mAh g−1 at an extremely high C‐rate (6 C). which is unprecedented performance among the reported studies on coating technology. Although efforts have been made to increase the Ni content in Ni-rich cathodes for Li-ion batteries with high specific capacities, an unstable surface of the cathode and electrolyte remains a significant challenge. To stabilize the surface, various protective layers – such as aluminum oxide (Al2O3) – have been introduced on the surface of Ni-rich cathodes. In this study, we used a facing-target sputtering (FTS) method to avoid the reaction of residual Li and moisture from the precursor for the coating method, and to build a dense, homogeneous, protective, ultrathin Al2O3 layer at the surface of NCM811. It was proven that FTS rules out the presence of the LiOH byproduct of residual Li on the NCM811 during surface modification. Ensuring interface protection by using FTS instead of atomic layer deposition with an H2O-based precursor was identified as a crucial determinant of the NCM811 performance. Our findings present an updated and promising process for stabilizing the surface, demonstrating the need to select a technique to achieve surface passivation of Ni-rich cathodes and improvements in cycling performance. [Display omitted] • A simple but powerful solution to overcome the chronic bottleneck of the nanocatalyst delivery on oxide support: the carbothermal shock driven nanocatalyst formation on carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with small sizes and fine distribution can be delivered to oxide structures of choice while retaining high uniformity. • Fabrication of catalyst delivered porous oxide structures: the asymmetric sputtering of oxide on CNFs can induce the formation of openly porous hemi-tubular structures with tunable porosity and thickness. A simple subsequent calcination results in the transfer of catalysts from the CNF template to the porous oxide structures. • Superior hydrogen sulfide sensing properties: Uniform distribution of Pt nanoparticles on SnO 2 hemitubes showed superior H 2 S sensing performances (Response Rair/Rgas > 1500 at 5 ppm H 2 S) compared to state-of-the-art H 2 S sensors. To achieve powerful gas sensors oxide semiconductor chemiresistors, the uniform functionalization of nanocatalysts on the desired metal oxides is considered as a key strategy. However, still, it is challenging to achieve the nanocatalysts decoration on desired oxides without deterioration of target materials. In this study, thermal-shock (rapid joule-heating method) was applied to uniformly decorate Pt nanoparticles (NPs) on the surface of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) to achieve the uniform distribution of Pt NPs on one-dimensional structures. And then, SnO 2 was physically deposited on the Pt NPs loaded CNFs and continuous heat-treatment was conducted to transfer the Pt NPs to desired SnO 2 porous hemitubes. Thanks to the well-distributed Pt NPs on porous SnO 2 hollow structures, the Pt laoded SnO 2 hemitubes showed an exceptional sensitivity (R air /R gas = 1500 at 5 ppm) in H 2 S. Also, it showed high selectivity for H 2 S and high stability even under continuous gas exposure, confirming its potential as an effective H 2 S sensor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemiresistive gas sensors based on semiconducting metal oxides typically rely on noble metal catalysts to enhance their sensitivity and selectivity. However, noble metal catalysts have several drawbacks for practical utilization, including their high cost, their propensity for spontaneous agglomeration, and poisoning effects with certain types of gases. As such, in the interest of commercializing the chemiresistive gas sensor technology, we propose an alternative design for a noble-metal-free sensing material through the case study of Co-doped ceria (Co-CeO 2 ) catalysts embedded in a SnO 2 matrix. In this investigation, we utilized electrospinning and subsequent calcination to prepare Co-CeO 2 catalyst nanoparticles integrated with SnO 2 nanofibers (NFs) with uniform particle distribution and particle size regulation down to the sub-2 nm regime. The resulting Co-CeO 2 @SnO 2 NFs exhibited superior gas sensing characteristics toward isoprene (C 5 H 8 ) gas, a significant biomarker for monitoring the onset of various diseases through breath diagnostics. In particular, we identified that the Co-CeO 2 catalysts, owing to the transition metal doping, facilitated the spillover of chemisorbed oxygen species to the SnO 2 sensing body. This resulting in the sensor having a 27.4-fold higher response toward 5 ppm of C 5 H 8 (compared to pristine SnO 2 ), exceptionally high selectivity, and a low detection limit of 100 ppb. The sensor also exhibited high stability for prolonged response-recovery cycles, attesting to the strong anchoring of Co-CeO 2 catalysts in the SnO 2 matrix. Based on our findings, the transition metal-doped metal oxide catalysts, such as Co-CeO 2 , demonstrate strong potential to completely replace noble metal catalysts, thereby advancing the development of the commercially viable chemiresistive gas sensors free from noble metals, capable of detecting target gases at sub-ppm levels.

The unorthodox surface chemistry of high-entropy alloy nanoparticles (HEA-NPs), with numerous interelemental synergies, helps catalyze a variety of essential chemical processes, such as the conversion of CO 2 to CO, as a sustainable path to environmental remediation. However, the risk of agglomeration and phase separation in HEA-NPs during high-temperature operations are lasting issues that impede their practical viability. Herein, we present HEA-NP catalysts that are tightly sunk in an oxide overlayer for promoting the catalytic conversion of CO 2 with exceptional stability and performance. We demonstrated the controlled formation of conformal oxide overlayers on carbon nanofiber surfaces via a simple sol-gel method, which facilitated a large uptake of metal precursor ions and helped to decrease the reaction temperature required for nanoparticle formation. During the rapid thermal shock synthesis process, the oxide overlayer would also impede nanoparticle growth, resulting in uniformly distributed small HEA-NPs (2.37 ± 0.78 nm). Moreover, these HEA-NPs were firmly socketed in the reducible oxide overlayer, enabling an ultrastable catalytic performance involving >50% CO 2 conversion with >97% selectivity to CO for >300 h without extensive agglomeration. Altogether, we establish the rational design principles for the thermal shock synthesis of high-entropy alloy nanoparticles and offer a helpful mechanistic perspective on how the oxide overlayer impacts the nanoparticle synthesis behavior, providing a general platform for the designed synthesis of ultrastable and high-performance catalysts that could be utilized for various industrially and environmentally relevant chemical processes.
