Abstract Earthquake-induced crustal deformation provides valuable insights into the mechanisms of tectonic processes. Dislocation models offer a fundamental framework for comprehending such deformation, and two-dimensional antiplane dislocations are used to describe strike-slip faults. Previous earthquake deformation analyses observed that antiplane dislocations due to uniform fault slips are influenced predominantly by fault tips. Here, we state a general principle of fault geometry invariance in antiplane dislocations and exploit its theoretical consequence to define dislocation potentials that enable a streamlined crustal deformation analysis. To demonstrate the benefits of this theory, we present an analytical example and construct a rapid numerical solver for crustal deformation caused by variable fault slip scenarios using physics-informed neural networks, whose mesh-free property is suitable for modeling dislocation potentials. Fault geometry invariance and the dislocation potential may further the analysis of antiplane crustal deformation, particularly for uncertainty quantification and inversion analysis regarding unknown fault geometries in realistic crustal structures.

Intense tropical cyclones (TCs) cause significant damage to human societies. Forecasting the multiple stages of TC intensity changes is considerably crucial yet challenging. This difficulty arises due to imbalanced data distribution and the need for ordinal multi-class classification. While existing classification methods, such as linear discriminant analysis, have been utilized to predict rare rapidly intensifying (RI) stages based on features related TC intensity changes, they are limited to binary classification distinguishing between RI and non-RI stages. In this paper, we introduce a novel methodology to tackle the challenges of imbalanced ordinal multi-class classification. We extend the Area Under the Curve maximization technique with inter-instance/class cross-hinge losses and inter-class distance-based slack variables. The proposed loss function, implemented within a deep learning framework, demonstrates its effectiveness using real sequence data of multi-stage TC intensity changes, including satellite infrared images and environmental variables observed in the western North Pacific.

Abstract Network representation learning is a de facto tool for graph analytics. The mainstream of the previous approaches is to factorize the proximity matrix between nodes. However, if n is the number of nodes, since the size of the proximity matrix is $$n \times n$$ n × n , it needs $$O(n^3)$$ O ( n 3 ) time and $$O(n^2)$$ O ( n 2 ) space to perform network representation learning; they are significantly high for large-scale graphs. This paper introduces the novel idea of using similarities between clusters instead of proximities between nodes; the proposed approach computes the representations of the clusters from similarities between clusters and computes the representations of nodes by referring to them. If l is the number of clusters, since $$l \ll n$$ l ≪ n , we can efficiently obtain the representations of clusters from a small $$l \times l$$ l × l similarity matrix. Furthermore, since nodes in each cluster share similar structural properties, we can effectively compute the representation vectors of nodes. Experiments show that our approach can perform network representation learning more efficiently and effectively than existing approaches.

Acquiring continuous spatial data, e.g., spatial ground motion, is essential to assess the damaged area and appropriately assign rescue and medical teams. Therefore, spatial interpolation methods have been developed to estimate the value of unobserved points linearly from neighbor observed values, i.e., inverse distance weighting and Kriging. Meanwhile, realistic spatial continuous environmental data with various scenarios can be generated by 3-D finite difference methods using a high-resolution structure model. These enable to collect supervised data even for unobserved points. Therefore, this paper proposes a framework of supervised spatial interpolation and applies highly advanced deep inpainting methods, where spatially distributed observed points are treated as masked images and non-linearly expanded through convolutional encoder–decoder networks. However, the property of translation invariance would avoid locally fine-grained interpolation because the relation between the target and surrounding observation points varies among regions owing to their topography and subsurface structure. To overcome this issue, this paper proposes introducing position-dependent partial convolution, where kernel weights are adjusted depending on their position on an image based on the trainable position-feature map. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed method, called Position-dependent Deep Inpainting Method, using toy and ground-motion data.

AbstractThe estimation of water depth in coastal areas and shallow waters is crucial for marine management and monitoring. However, direct measurements using fieldwork methods can be costly and time-consuming. Therefore, remote sensing imagery is a promising source of geospatial information for coastal planning and development. To this end, this study investigates advanced machine learning (ML) methods and redesigned morphological profiles for water depth estimation using high-resolution Sentinel-2 satellite imagery. The proposed framework involves three main steps: (1) morphological feature generation, (2) model training using several ML methods (Decision Tree, Random Forest, eXtreme Gradient BOOSTing, Light Gradient Boosting Machine, Deep Neural Network, and CatBoost), and (3) model interpretation using eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI). The performance of the proposed method was evaluated in two different coastal areas (port and jetty) with reference data from accurate hydrographic data (Echo-sounder and differential global positioning systems). The statistical analysis revealed that the proposed method had high efficiency for depth estimation of the coastal area, achieving a best R2 value of 0.96 and Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) of 0.27 m in water depth estimation in the shallow water of Chabahar Bay in the Oman Sea. Additionally, the higher impact and interaction of the morphological features were verified using XAI for water depth mapping.

Abstract Modeling typhoon-induced storm surges requires 10-m wind and sea level pressure fields as forcings, commonly obtained using parametric models or a fully dynamical simulation by numerical weather prediction (NWP) models. The parametric models are generally less accurate than the full-physics models of the NWP, but they are often preferred owing to their computational efficiency facilitating rapid uncertainty quantification. Here, we propose using a deep learning method based on generative adversarial networks (GAN) to translate the parametric model outputs into a more realistic atmospheric forcings structure resembling the NWP model results. Additionally, we introduce lead-lag parameters to incorporate a forecasting feature in our model. Thirty-four historical typhoon events from 1981 to 2012 are selected to train the GAN, followed by storm surge simulations for the four most recent events. The proposed method efficiently transforms the parametric model into realistic forcing fields by a standard desktop computer within a few seconds. The results show that the storm surge model accuracy with forcings generated by GAN is comparable to that of the NWP model and outperforms the parametric model. Our novel GAN model offers an alternative for rapid storm forecasting and can potentially combine varied data, such as those from satellite images, to improve the forecasts further.

Abstract In this paper, we address the problem of earthquake declustering, and propose a k-nearest neighbors approach based on the selection of multiple-parent nodes with respect to each of the given earthquakes, which can be regarded as a natural extension of the conventional correlation-metric method based on the selection of a single-parent node. Based on this approach, we develop a centrality measure that exploits link weight assigned by a logarithmic-distance scheme and a technique of individually visualizing each set of child nodes with respect to given target earthquakes. For experimental evaluation, we used an earthquake catalog covering Japan and selected 24 earthquakes that caused considerable damage or casualties. We first show that our proposed centrality measure using a logarithmic-distance scheme can rank these 24 major earthquakes higher than four link-weighting schemes (i.e., uniform, magnitude, inverse-distance, and normalized-inverse-distance weighting) and conventional single-parent selection. We then show that unlike the conventional approach to simultaneously visualizing all the events in the catalog, our proposed technique can produce a naturally interpretable classification result for these 24 major earthquakes, by individually visualizing each set of the first to k-th child nodes with different colored markers plotted in the directly interpretable spatio and temporal metrics. As a consequence, we confirm that our approach based on multiple-parent selection is vital and promising.

Modeling crustal deformation is critical for understanding of tectonic processes and earthquake potentials. Here, the authors propose a deep learning approach that can be extended in a straightforward manner to complex crustal structures and inverse problems.

One of the main challenges in the tsunami inundation prediction is related to the real-time computational efforts done under restrictive time constraints. Here the authors show that using machine learning-based model, we can achieve comparable accuracy to the physics-based model with ~99% computational cost reduction.

As the damage caused by heavy rainfall worsens, there is a growing demand for improved forecasts. One practical approach to address this issue is the linear integration of multiple existing forecasts, which allows for visualizing the contribution of each forecast at different locations. However, current methods such as arithmetic and Bayesian averages utilize a single weight shared across the entire space, making it difficult to account for local variations in importance. Additionally, while U-Net-based spatial forecasts have been proposed, they are limited to short-term predictions and do not facilitate the visualization of individual forecast contributions due to their non-linear processes. To overcome these challenges, we propose a new integration framework based on U-Net image transformation. This framework generates weight images that dynamically integrate forecasts based on both time and location. To effectively handle large and imbalanced precipitation data, we introduce novel extensions to the U-Net model. These extensions address heavily imbalanced precipitation data and enable position and time-dependent integration. Experimental results using real precipitation forecast data in Japan demonstrate that our proposed method outperforms existing integration methods.

Abstract It is expected that the pronounced decrease in b-value of the Gutenberg–Richter law for some region during some time interval can be a promising precursor in forecasting earthquakes with large magnitudes, and thus we address the problem of automatically identifying such spatio-temporal change points as several clusters consisting of earthquakes whose b-values are substantially smaller than the total one. For this purpose, we propose a new method consisting of two phases: tree construction and tree separation. In the former phase, we employ one of two different declustering algorithms called single-link and correlation-metric developed in the field of seismology, while in the later phase, we employ a variant of the change-point detection algorithm, developed in the field of data mining. In the later phase, we also employ one of two different types of objective functions, i.e., the average magnitude which is inversely proportional to the b-value, and the likelihood function based on the Gutenberg–Richter law. Here note that since the magnitudes of most earthquakes are relatively small, we formulate our problem so as to produce one relatively large cluster and the other small clusters having substantially larger average magnitudes or smaller b-values. In addition, in order to characterize some properties of our proposed methods, we present a method of analyzing magnitude correlation over an earthquake network. In our empirical evaluation using earthquake catalog data covering the whole of Japan, we show that our proposed method employing the single-link strategy can produce more desirable results for our purpose in terms of the improvement of weighted sums of variances, average logarithmic likelihoods, visualization results, and magnitude correlation analyses.

Particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations are a serious human health concern and global models are the common methods for PM2.5 particle estimation disregarding the local changes and factors. In this study, a polynomial model for PM2.5 particles prediction was proposed to examine the correlations among PM2.5, PM10, and meteorological parameters. The study was carried out in the north of Iraq including two provinces; Kirkuk and Sulaymaniyah. The data gathered from different sources. Two datasets have been used, collected during July 2019 and February 2020. To test our methodology, the model was applied on a small subset of the study area (5.6 km2) inside the Kirkuk province. Datasets (observation and ground truth) were utilized to examine the model. Based on the July 2019 dataset, the mean local R2 values were estimated at 0.98 and 0.97 in the north part of Iraq, and inside the Kirkuk province (the small subset), respectively. While based on the February 2020 dataset, the mean local R2 values were estimated at 0.98 inside the Kirkuk province. High values of prediction accuracies were obtained by 82% and 96% in July and February, respectively. Moreover, our findings highlighted that the health impacts and air quality varied from moderate to unhealthy in the region.

This paper presents exploratory work looking into the effectiveness of attention mechanisms (AMs) in improving the task of building segmentation based on convolutional neural network (CNN) backbones. Firstly, we evaluate the effectiveness of CNN-based architectures with and without AMs. Secondly, we attempt to interpret the results produced by the CNNs using explainable artificial intelligence (XAI) methods. We compare CNNs with and without (vanilla) AMs for buildings detection. Five metrics are calculated, namely F1-score, precision, recall, intersection over union (IoU) and overall accuracy (OA). For the XAI portion of this work, the methods of Layer Gradient X activation and Layer DeepLIFT are used to explore the internal AMs and their overall effects on the network. Qualitative evaluation is based on color-coded value attribution to assess how the AMs facilitate the CNNs in performing buildings classification. We look at the effects of employing five AM algorithms, namely (i) squeeze and excitation (SE), (ii) convolution attention block module (CBAM), (iii) triplet attention, (iv) shuffle attention (SA), and (v) efficient channel attention (ECA). Experimental results indicate that AMs generally and markedly improve the quantitative metrics, with the attribution visualization results of XAI methods agreeing with the quantitative metrics.

Technologies for acquiring explainable features from medical images need further development. Here, the authors report a deep learning based automated acquisition of explainable features from pathology images, and show a higher accuracy of their method as compared to pathologist based diagnosis of prostate cancer recurrence.

Building damage maps can be generated from either optical or Light Detection and Ranging (Lidar) datasets. In the wake of a disaster such as an earthquake, a timely and detailed map is a critical reference for disaster teams in order to plan and perform rescue and evacuation missions. Recent studies have shown that, instead of being used individually, optical and Lidar data can potentially be fused to obtain greater detail. In this study, we explore this fusion potential, which incorporates deep learning. The overall framework involves a novel End-to-End convolutional neural network (CNN) that performs building damage detection. Specifically, our building damage detection network (BDD-Net) utilizes three deep feature streams (through a multi-scale residual depth-wise convolution block) that are fused at different levels of the network. This is unlike other fusion networks that only perform fusion at the first and the last levels. The performance of BDD-Net is evaluated under three different phases, using optical and Lidar datasets for the 2010 Haiti Earthquake. The three main phases are: (1) data preprocessing and building footprint extraction based on building vector maps, (2) sample data preparation and data augmentation, and (3) model optimization and building damage map generation. The results of building damage detection in two scenarios show that fusing the optical and Lidar datasets significantly improves building damage map generation, with an overall accuracy (OA) greater than 88%.

The detection of buildings in the city is essential in several geospatial domains and for decision-making regarding intelligence for city planning, tax collection, project management, revenue generation, and smart cities, among other areas. In the past, the classical approach used for building detection was by using the imagery and it entailed human–computer interaction, which was a daunting proposition. To tackle this task, a novel network based on an end-to-end deep learning framework is proposed to detect and classify buildings features. The proposed CNN has three parallel stream channels: the first is the high-resolution aerial imagery, while the second stream is the digital surface model (DSM). The third was fixed on extracting deep features using the fusion of channel one and channel two, respectively. Furthermore, the channel has eight group convolution blocks of 2D convolution with three max-pooling layers. The proposed model’s efficiency and dependability were tested on three different categories of complex urban building structures in the study area. Then, morphological operations were applied to the extracted building footprints to increase the uniformity of the building boundaries and produce improved building perimeters. Thus, our approach bridges a significant gap in detecting building objects in diverse environments; the overall accuracy (OA) and kappa coefficient of the proposed method are greater than 80% and 0.605, respectively. The findings support the proposed framework and methodologies’ efficacy and effectiveness at extracting buildings from complex environments.

Large damages and losses resulting from floods are widely reported across the globe. Thus, the identification of the flood-prone zones on a flood susceptibility map is very essential. To do so, 13 conditioning factors influencing the flood occurrence in Brisbane river catchment in Australia (i.e., topographic, water-related, geological, and land use factors) were acquired for further processing and modeling. In this study, artificial neural networks (ANN), deep learning neural networks (DLNN), and optimized DLNN using particle swarm optimization (PSO) were exploited to predict and estimate the susceptible areas to the future floods. The significance of the conditioning factors analysis for the region highlighted that altitude, distance from river, sediment transport index (STI), and slope played the most important roles, whereas stream power index (SPI) did not contribute to the hazardous situation. The performance of the models was evaluated against the statistical tests such as sensitivity, specificity, the area under curve (AUC), and true skill statistic (TSS). DLNN and PSO-DLNN models obtained the highest values of sensitivity (0.99) for the training stage to compare with ANN. Moreover, the validations of specificity and TSS for PSO-DLNN recorded the highest values of 0.98 and 0.90, respectively, compared with those obtained by ANN and DLNN. The best accuracies by AUC were evaluated in PSO-DLNN (0.99 in training and 0.98 in testing datasets), followed by DLNN and ANN. Therefore, the optimized PSO-DLNN proved its robustness to compare with other methods.

Langevin dynamics (LD) has been extensively studied theoretically and practically as a basic sampling technique. Recently, the incorporation of non-reversible dynamics into LD is attracting attention because it accelerates the mixing speed of LD. Popular choices for non-reversible dynamics include underdamped Langevin dynamics (ULD), which uses second-order dynamics and perturbations with skew-symmetric matrices. Although ULD has been widely used in practice, the application of skew acceleration is limited although it is expected to show superior performance theoretically. Current work lacks a theoretical understanding of issues that are important to practitioners, including the selection criteria for skew-symmetric matrices, quantitative evaluations of acceleration, and the large memory cost of storing skew matrices. In this study, we theoretically and numerically clarify these problems by analyzing acceleration focusing on how the skew-symmetric matrix perturbs the Hessian matrix of potential functions. We also present a practical algorithm that accelerates the standard LD and ULD, which uses novel memory-efficient skew-symmetric matrices under parallel-chain Monte Carlo settings.

This paper proposes a UAV-based PM2.5 air quality and temperature-humidity monitoring system. The system includes an air quality detector comprising four Arduino sensor modules. Specifically, it includes a dust (DSM501A) sensor and a temperature and humidity (DHT11) sensor. The NEO-6M GPS module and DS3231 real-time module are also included for input visualization. A DIY SD card logging shield and memory module is also available for data recording purposes. The Arduino-based board houses multiple sensors and all are programmable using the Arduino integrated development environment (IDE) coding tool. Measurements conducted in a vertical flight path show promise where comparisons with ground truth references data showed good similarity. Overall, the results point to the idea that a light-weight and portable system can be used for accurate and reliable remote sensing data collection (in this case, PM2.5 concentration data and environmental data).

This study predicts forest fire susceptibility in Chaloos Rood watershed in Iran using three machine learning (ML) models—multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS), support vector machine (SVM), and boosted regression tree (BRT). The study utilizes 14 set of fire predictors derived from vegetation indices, climatic variables, environmental factors, and topographical features. To assess the suitability of the models and estimating the variance and bias of estimation, the training dataset obtained from the Natural Resources Directorate of Mazandaran province was subjected to resampling using cross validation (CV), bootstrap, and optimism bootstrap techniques. Using variance inflation factor (VIF), weight indicating the strength of the spatial relationship of the predictors to fire occurrence was assigned to each contributing variable. Subsequently, the models were trained and validated using the receiver operating characteristics (ROC) area under the curve (AUC) curve. Results of the model validation based on the resampling techniques (non, 5- and 10-fold CV, bootstrap and optimism bootstrap) produced AUC values of 0.78, 0.88, 0.90, 0.86 and 0.83 for the MARS model; 0.82, 0.82, 0.89, 0.87, 0.84 for the SVM and 0.87, 0.90, 0.90, 0.90, 0.91 for the BRT model. Across the individual model, the 10-fold CV performed best in MARS and SVM with AUC values of 0.90 and 0.89. Overall, the BRT outperformed the other models in all ramification with highest AUC value of 0.91 using optimism bootstrap resampling algorithm. Generally, the resampling process enhanced the prediction performance of all the models.

In recent years, remote-sensing (RS) technologies have been used together with image processing and traditional techniques in various disaster-related works. Among these is detecting building damage from orthophoto imagery that was inflicted by earthquakes. Automatic and visual techniques are considered as typical methods to produce building damage maps using RS images. The visual technique, however, is time-consuming due to manual sampling. The automatic method is able to detect the damaged building by extracting the defect features. However, various design methods and widely changing real-world conditions, such as shadow and light changes, cause challenges to the extensive appointing of automatic methods. As a potential solution for such challenges, this research proposes the adaption of deep learning (DL), specifically convolutional neural networks (CNN), which has a high ability to learn features automatically, to identify damaged buildings from pre- and post-event RS imageries. Since RS data revolves around imagery, CNNs can arguably be most effective at automatically discovering relevant features, avoiding the need for feature engineering based on expert knowledge. In this work, we focus on RS imageries from orthophoto imageries for damaged-building detection, specifically for (i) background, (ii) no damage, (iii) minor damage, and (iv) debris classifications. The gist is to uncover the CNN architecture that will work best for this purpose. To this end, three CNN models, namely the twin model, fusion model, and composite model, are applied to the pre- and post-orthophoto imageries collected from the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, Japan. The robustness of the models was evaluated using four evaluation metrics, namely overall accuracy (OA), producer accuracy (PA), user accuracy (UA), and F1 score. According to the obtained results, the twin model achieved higher accuracy (OA = 76.86%; F1 score = 0.761) compare to the fusion model (OA = 72.27%; F1 score = 0.714) and composite (OA = 69.24%; F1 score = 0.682) models.

The estimation and mapping of forest stand characteristics are vital because this information is necessary for sustainable forest management. The present study considers the use of a Bayesian additive regression trees (BART) algorithm as a non-parametric classifier using Sentinel-2A data and topographic variables to estimate the forest stand characteristics, namely the basal area (m2/ha), stem volume (m3/ha), and stem density (number/ha). These results were compared with those of three other popular machine learning (ML) algorithms, such as generalised linear model (GLM), K-nearest neighbours (KNN), and support vector machine (SVM). A feature selection was done on 28 variables including the multi-spectral bands on Sentinel-2 satellite, related vegetation indices, and ancillary data (elevation, slope, and topographic solar-radiation index derived from digital elevation model (DEM)) and then the most insignificant variables were removed from the datasets by recursive feature elimination (RFE). The study area was a mountainous forest with high biodiversity and an elevation gradient from 26 to 1636 m. An inventory dataset of 1200 sample plots was provided for training and testing the algorithms, and the predictors were fed into the ML models to compute and predict the forest stand characteristics. The accuracies and certainties of the ML models were assessed by their root mean square error (RMSE), mean absolute error (MAE), and R-squared (R2) values. The results demonstrated that BART generated the best basal area and stem volume predictions, followed by GLM, SVM, and KNN. The best RMSE values for both basal area (8.12 m2/ha) and stem volume (29.28 m3/ha) estimation were obtained by BART. Thus, the ability of the BART model for forestry application was established. On the other hand, KNN exhibited the highest RMSE values for all stand variable predictions, thereby exhibiting the least accuracy for this specific application. Moreover, the effectiveness of the narrow Sentinel-2 bands around the red edge and elevation was highlighted for predicting the forest stand characteristics. Therefore, we concluded that the combination of the Sentinel-2 products and topographic variables derived from the PALSAR data used in this study improved the estimation of the forest attributes in temperate forests.

Predicting landslide occurrences can be difficult. However, failure to do so can be catastrophic, causing unwanted tragedies such as property damage, community displacement, and human casualties. Research into landslide susceptibility mapping (LSM) attempts to alleviate such catastrophes through the identification of landslide prone areas. Computational modelling techniques have been successful in related disaster scenarios, which motivate this work to explore such modelling for LSM. In this research, the potential of supervised machine learning and ensemble learning is investigated. Firstly, the Flexible Discriminant Analysis (FDA) supervised learning algorithm is trained for LSM and compared against other algorithms that have been widely used for the same purpose, namely Generalized Logistic Models (GLM), Boosted Regression Trees (BRT or GBM), and Random Forest (RF). Next, an ensemble model consisting of all four algorithms is implemented to examine possible performance improvements. The dataset used to train and test all the algorithms consists of a landslide inventory map of 227 landslide locations. From these sources, 13 conditioning factors are extracted to be used in the models. Experimental evaluations are made based on True Skill Statistic (TSS), the Receiver Operation characteristic (ROC) curve and kappa index. The results show that the best TSS (0.6986), ROC (0.904) and kappa (0.6915) were obtained by the ensemble model. FDA on its own seems effective at modelling landslide susceptibility from multiple data sources, with performance comparable to GLM. However, it slightly underperforms when compared to GBM (BRT) and RF. RF seems most capable compared to GBM, GLM, and FDA, when dealing with all conditioning factors.

Considering the high-level details in an ultrahigh-spatial-resolution (UHSR) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) dataset, detailed mapping of heterogeneous urban landscapes is extremely challenging because of the spectral similarity between classes. In this study, adaptive hierarchical image segmentation optimization, multilevel feature selection, and multiscale (MS) supervised machine learning (ML) models were integrated to accurately generate detailed maps for heterogeneous urban areas from the fusion of the UHSR orthomosaic and digital surface model (DSM). The integrated approach commenced through a preliminary MS image segmentation parameter selection, followed by the application of three supervised ML models, namely, random forest (RF), support vector machine (SVM), and decision tree (DT). These models were implemented at the optimal MS levels to identify preliminary information, such as the optimal segmentation level(s) and relevant features, for extracting 12 land use/land cover (LULC) urban classes from the fused datasets. Using the information obtained from the first phase of the analysis, detailed MS classification was iteratively conducted to improve the classification accuracy and derive the final urban LULC maps. Two UAV-based datasets were used to develop and assess the effectiveness of the proposed framework. The hierarchical classification of the pilot study area showed that the RF was superior with an overall accuracy (OA) of 94.40% and a kappa coefficient (K) of 0.938, followed by SVM (OA = 92.50% and K = 0.917) and DT (OA = 91.60% and K = 0.908). The classification results of the second dataset revealed that SVM was superior with an OA of 94.45% and K of 0.938, followed by RF (OA = 92.46% and K = 0.916) and DT (OA = 90.46% and K = 0.893). The proposed framework exhibited an excellent potential for the detailed mapping of heterogeneous urban landscapes from the fusion of UHSR orthophoto and DSM images using various ML models.

In recent years, remote sensing researchers have investigated the use of different modalities (or combinations of modalities) for classification tasks. Such modalities can be extracted via a diverse range of sensors and images. Currently, there are no (or only a few) studies that have been done to increase the land cover classification accuracy via unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)−digital surface model (DSM) fused datasets. Therefore, this study looks at improving the accuracy of these datasets by exploiting convolutional neural networks (CNNs). In this work, we focus on the fusion of DSM and UAV images for land use/land cover mapping via classification into seven classes: bare land, buildings, dense vegetation/trees, grassland, paved roads, shadows, and water bodies. Specifically, we investigated the effectiveness of the two datasets with the aim of inspecting whether the fused DSM yields remarkable outcomes for land cover classification. The datasets were: (i) only orthomosaic image data (Red, Green and Blue channel data), and (ii) a fusion of the orthomosaic image and DSM data, where the final classification was performed using a CNN. CNN, as a classification method, is promising due to hierarchical learning structure, regulating and weight sharing with respect to training data, generalization, optimization and parameters reduction, automatic feature extraction and robust discrimination ability with high performance. The experimental results show that a CNN trained on the fused dataset obtains better results with Kappa index of ~0.98, an average accuracy of 0.97 and final overall accuracy of 0.98. Comparing accuracies between the CNN with DSM result and the CNN without DSM result for the overall accuracy, average accuracy and Kappa index revealed an improvement of 1.2%, 1.8% and 1.5%, respectively. Accordingly, adding the heights of features such as buildings and trees improved the differentiation between vegetation specifically where plants were dense.

Genomic selection (GS) is a recent selective breeding method which uses predictive models based on whole-genome molecular markers. Until now, existing studies formulated GS as the problem of modeling an individual's breeding value for a particular trait of interest, i.e., as a regression problem. To assess predictive accuracy of the model, the Pearson correlation between observed and predicted trait values was used.In this paper, we propose to formulate GS as the problem of ranking individuals according to their breeding value. Our proposed framework allows us to employ machine learning methods for ranking which had previously not been considered in the GS literature. To assess ranking accuracy of a model, we introduce a new measure originating from the information retrieval literature called normalized discounted cumulative gain (NDCG). NDCG rewards more strongly models which assign a high rank to individuals with high breeding value. Therefore, NDCG reflects a prerequisite objective in selective breeding: accurate selection of individuals with high breeding value.We conducted a comparison of 10 existing regression methods and 3 new ranking methods on 6 datasets, consisting of 4 plant species and 25 traits. Our experimental results suggest that tree-based ensemble methods including McRank, Random Forests and Gradient Boosting Regression Trees achieve excellent ranking accuracy. RKHS regression and RankSVM also achieve good accuracy when used with an RBF kernel. Traditional regression methods such as Bayesian lasso, wBSR and BayesC were found less suitable for ranking. Pearson correlation was found to correlate poorly with NDCG. Our study suggests two important messages. First, ranking methods are a promising research direction in GS. Second, NDCG can be a useful evaluation measure for GS.

A new interactive visualization tool is proposed for mining text data from various fields of neuroscience. Applications to several text datasets are presented to demonstrate the capability of the proposed interactive tool to visualize complex relationships between pairs of lexical entities (with some semantic contents) such as terms, keywords, posters, or papers' abstracts. Implemented as a Java applet, this tool is based on the spherical embedding (SE) algorithm, which was designed for the visualization of bipartite graphs. Items such as words and documents are linked on the basis of occurrence relationships, which can be represented in a bipartite graph. These items are visualized by embedding the vertices of the bipartite graph on spheres in a three-dimensional (3-D) space. The main advantage of the proposed visualization tool is that 3-D layouts can convey more information than planar or linear displays of items or graphs. Different kinds of information extracted from texts, such as keywords, indexing terms, or topics are visualized, allowing interactive browsing of various fields of research featured by keywords, topics, or research teams. A typical use of the 3D-SE viewer is quick browsing of topics displayed on a sphere, then selecting one or several item(s) displays links to related terms on another sphere representing, e.g., documents or abstracts, and provides direct online access to the document source in a database, such as the Visiome Platform or the SfN Annual Meeting. Developed as a Java applet, it operates as a tool on top of existing resources.

Choosing the method for inputting site conditions is critical in reducing the uncertainty of empirical ground-motion models (GMMs). We apply a neural network (NN) to construct a GMM of peak ground acceleration that extracts site properties from ground-motion data instead of referring to ground condition variables given for each site. A key structure of the model is one-hot representations of the site ID, that is, specifying the collection site of each ground-motion record by preparing input variables corresponding to all observation sites. This representation makes the best use of the flexibility of NN to obtain site-specific properties while avoiding overfitting at sites where a small number of strong motions have been recorded. The proposed model exhibits accurate and robust estimations among several compared models in different aspects, including data-poor sites and strong motions from large earthquakes. This model is expected to derive a single-station sigma that evaluates the residual uncertainty under the specification of estimation sites. The proposed NN structure of one-hot representations would serve as a standard ingredient for constructing site-specific GMMs in general regions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
