Addressing the critical issue of water pollution, this review article emphasizes the need to remove hazardous dyes and phenolic compounds from wastewater. These pollutants pose severe risks due to their toxic, mutagenic, and carcinogenic properties. The study explores various techniques for the remediation of organic contaminants from wastewater, including an enzymatic approach. A significant challenge in enzymatic wastewater treatment is the loss of enzyme activity and difficulty in recovery post-treatment. To mitigate these issues, this review examines the strategy of immobilizing enzymes on newly developed nanostructured materials like graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), and metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). These materials offer high surface areas, excellent porosity, and ample anchoring sites for effective enzyme immobilization. The review evaluates recent research on enzyme immobilization on these supports and their applications in biocatalytic nanoparticles. It also analyzes the impact of operational factors (e.g., time, pH, and temperature) on dye and phenolic compound removal from wastewater using these enzymes. Despite promising outcomes, this review acknowledges the challenges for large-scale implementation and offers recommendations for future research to tackle these obstacles. This review concludes by suggesting that enzyme immobilization on these emerging materials could present a sustainable, environmentally friendly solution to the escalating water pollution crisis. The calcium carbonate (CaCO3) scale is one of the most common oilfield scales and oil and gas production bane. CaCO3 scale can lead to a sudden halt in production or, worst-case scenario, accidents; therefore, CaCO3 scale formation prevention is essential for the oil and gas industry. Scale inhibitors are chemicals that can mitigate this problem. We used two popular theoretical techniques in this study: Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD). The objective was to investigate the inhibitory abilities of mixed oligomers, specifically acrylamide functionalized silica (AM-Silica). DFT studies indicate that Ca2+ does not bind readily to acryl acid and acrylamide; however, it has a good binding affinity with PAM and Silica functionalized PAM. The highest binding affinity occurs in the silica region and not the –CONH functional groups. AIMD calculations corroborate the DFT studies, as observed from the MD trajectory that Ca2+ binds to PAM-Silica by forming bonds with silicon; however, Ca2+ initially forms a bond with silicon in the presence of water molecules. This bonding does not last long, and it subsequently bonds with the oxygen atoms present in the water molecule. PAM-Silica is a suitable calcium scale inhibitor because of its high binding affinity with Ca2+. Inorganically crosslinked polymers have been intensively implemented for conformance control treatments in oil and gas wells at low temperatures (<90°C) because of their faster gelation time compared to organically crosslinked gels. Crosslinkers such as chromium acetate are known to be toxic, and aluminium‐based alternatives have been introduced. This study aims to investigate the impact of aluminium acetate (AlAc) particle size on the gelation kinetics of polyacrylamide (PAM)‐based gels at a pH of 5 and temperature of 75°C. Moreover, bentonite is used as an additive to delay the crosslinking of PAM/AlAc gels. Reducing the particle size increases the specific surface area of the particles and provides more crosslinking sites. Therefore, lower PAM concentrations (up to 5 wt.%) could be used without AlAc settling. Using 7 wt.% PAM/1 wt.% AlAc with sizes of 25 and 48 μm revealed a crosslinking time of 17 and 115 min, respectively. The addition of bentonite at low crosslinker concentrations (0.5–1 wt.%) did not decrease the gel strength of 7 wt.% PAM/1 wt.% AlAc significantly. The gelation time was extended after adding 1 wt.% bentonite to the formulation where the delay was attributed to the adsorption of AlAc on the bentonite surface that was illustrated by molecular simulation. The potential crosslinking of three types of nitrogen‐containing functionalized silica (TAAcONa, guanidine, and triamine) with polyacrylamide (PAM) has been investigated. Only triamine silica was able to crosslink with PAM, producing barely flowing gel with storage modulus of around 700 Pa. Micro differential scanning calorimeter (μDSC) analysis illustrated exothermic peaks indicating crosslinking of PAM with triamine and polyethyleneimine (PEI), with crosslinking onset temperatures of 80°C and 84°C. TGA analysis showed the thermal stability of the functionalized silica up to temperatures of more than 200°C. In the domain of study (up to 130°C), TAAcONa silica exhibited the highest weight loss of 5%. Different kinetic models were used to identify the degree of crosslinking and PAM/PEI has shown diffusion‐controlled reaction unlike PAM/triamine‐functionalized silica. The crosslinking mechanism of the new crosslinker is proposed to be similar to that of the PAM/PEI system. Yet, functionalized silica‐based gels are more stable and possess higher strength. In this study, the application of the core‐shell Fe3O4@SiO2 nano‐catalysts for fenton‐like degradation of malachite green dye has been presented. The nano‐catalysts were prepared using a combination of solvothermal and sol‐gel techniques and characterized using XRD, FTIR, SEM/EDX, TEM and VSM techniques. The effects of various reaction parameters on the degradation of malachite green dye using the prepared nano‐catalysts were investigated. The optimal condition for pH, catalyst dosage and H2O2 amount were found to be at 6.7, 15 mg and 50 μL, respectively. Under the optimized conditions, a degradation efficiency of 96.18 % for malachite green dye was achieved using the catalyst within 30 minutes at 303 K with a pseudo first order rate constant of 0.1102 min−1. The plausible mechanism for MG degradation was determined to be the combination of adsorption and simultaneous decomposition via formation of hydroxyl radicals. The performance of the nano‐catalyst was compared with other fenton‐like catalysts reported in the literature. Finally, the magnetic properties of the Fe3O4@SiO2 catalysts was utilized for its successful recovery and application in multiple degradation cycles. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: In the present study, the reaction kinetics of carbon dioxide (CO2) with two blends of N‐methyldiethanolamine; potassium salts of taurine and potassium salts of glycine were investigated. The experiments were performed using a stopped flow apparatus over a range of temperature varying from 293 to 313 K. The concentration of solution was varied from 0.2 to 0.8M in different proportions of potassium salts of taurine and glycine. For both cases, the overall reaction rate constant (kov) increased with increased temperature and amino acid salts proportions in the blends. Results also indicated that addition amino acid salts (AAS) could improve the overall reaction rate of methyldiethanolamine (MDEA) with CO2 by more than 100 times. The kinetics data were interpreted using the widely accepted mechanisms namely; zwitterion and termolecular mechanisms. An average absolute deviation of 8.8% was observed for both mechanisms applied to MDEA‐KTau blend, while an AAD% of 7.4 and 7.2 were observed for the case of MDEA‐KGly system when applying the zwitterion and termolecular mechanisms, respectively. The results showed that blends of MDEA and potassium salts amino acids react faster with CO2 compared to conventional amine systems. Hence, the use of both potassium salts of taurine and glycine as rate promotors can significantly enhance the reactivity of MDEA toward CO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, municipal solid waste bottom ash (MSW-BA) and fly ash (MSW-FA) were used as a source of aluminosilicate to prepare geopolymer (GEO) adsorbents (GEO-MSWBA and GEO-MSWFA) for the removal of methylene blue (MB) from water. The effects of temperature, pH, and initial concentration on the MB adsorption onto GEO-MSWBA and GEO-MSWFA were evaluated. The adsorption isotherms parameters and thermodynamics were also determined. Detailed physical and chemical characterizations of the prepared adsorbents were carried out to further understand their impact on MB adsorption. The results from the scanning electron microscopy revealed a uniform granule-sphere like structure on both prepared geopolymers, which would facilitate the MB adsorption onto the adsorbents. The X-ray diffraction allowed observation of the microstructural transformations that occur after the alkaline activation. The surface areas of the GEO-MSWBA and the GEO-MSWFA were recorded as 32.78 m2/g and 4.5 m2/g, respectively. From the Fourier transform infrared, a stretching vibration of the aluminosilicate tetrahedral was observed, which indicated the success of geopolymerization. The prepared geopolymers showed a high capability of MB adsorption from an aqueous solution. The adsorption process was best suited and explained using the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum adsorption capacity of 666.7 mg/g for the GEO-MSWBA (at 25°C) and 769.2 mg/g for the GEO-MSWFA (at 35°C). The positive value of the enthalpy (ΔHo) for the GEO-MSWBA suggested the reaction favored endothermic reaction while the negative value of entropy (ΔSo) indicated a solid/liquid random interaction. On the other hand, the negative ΔHo value for the GEO-MSWFA indicated the reaction followed an exothermic reaction causing energy to be released, the positive ΔSo value indicated a good affinity at the solid-liquid surface. The overall negative value for Gibbs free energy (ΔGo) for both adsorbents suggested the adsorption was spontaneous and feasible. It was also inferred that n- π interaction, direct and indirect hydrogen bond, and electrostatic interaction between the MB and the prepared geopolymers facilitated the adsorption process. The current study shows that the GEO-MSWBA and the GEO-MSWFA have a great potential of removing MB as a cationic dye from water without performing any sort of laborious pretreatments. Particles size distribution (PSD) is introduced as a tool for analysis of bentonite aggregation and swelling kinetics. Raw Ca-bentonite was purified using a combined wet sieving and sedimentation processes, followed by thermochemical treatment with Na2CO3 to increase its swelling capacity. The detailed analysis of the PSD shows a strong correlation between the PSD and the swelling process. For the chemically treated raw bentonite, PSD revealed two different peaks representing unswelled and swelled particles along with some aggregates. The swelling is shown to be a kinetically controlled process that depends on time, temperature, and bentonite chemical composition. At the beginning of the chemical treatment, the effect of aggregates was more dominant; therefore, the viscosity did not increase much with particle size. However, the combined chemical and thermal treatment has enhanced the Na-activation process and boosted bentonite swelling. The rheological measurements have shown enhancement in the viscosity and confirmed the PSD findings. The same optimal treatment conditions are obtained from both rheological measurements and PSD analysis. A model is developed based on classical reaction rate kinetics and used to describe the conversion from unswelled to swelled particles. The PSD has a strong correlation with the physical properties of the suspension such as the viscosity. The swelling rate fits a second order model with a rate constant, k, in the range 0.002 to 0.124 h−1 and an activation energy, E, of 87 kJ/mol. PSD analysis together with the developed kinetic model are powerful tools for studying the swelling kinetics of bentonites. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
