Abstract

This paper presents two metazoan zooplankton datasets obtained by imaging samples collected on the Bay of Biscay continental shelf in spring during the PELGAS (PELagique GAScogne) integrated surveys over the 2004–2019 period. The samples were collected at night with a 200 µm mesh-size WP2 net fitted with a Hydrobios (back-run stop) mechanical flowmeter and hauled vertically from the sea floor to the surface, with the maximum depth set at 100 m when the bathymetry was deeper than this. The first dataset originates from samples collected from 2004 to 2016 and imaged on land with the ZooScan and is composed of 1 153 507 imaged and measured objects. The second dataset originates from samples collected from 2016 to 2019 and imaged onboard the R/V Thalassa with the ZooCAM and is composed of 702 111 imaged and measured objects. The imaged objects are composed of zooplankton individuals, zooplankton pieces, non-living particles and imaging artefacts ranging from 300 µm to 3.39 mm in equivalent spherical diameter which were individually imaged, measured and identified. Each imaged object is geolocated and associated with a station, a survey, a year and other metadata. Each object is described by a set of morphological and grey-level-based features (8 bit encoding, 0 = black, 255 = white), including size, that were automatically extracted from each individual image. Each object was taxonomically identified using the web-based application Ecotaxa with built-in random-forest and CNN-based semi-automatic sorting tools, which was followed by expert validation or correction. The objects were sorted into 172 taxonomic and morphological groups. Each dataset features a table combining metadata and data at individual-object granularity from which one can easily derive quantitative population and community descriptors such as abundances, mean sizes, biovolumes, biomasses and size structure. Each object's individual image is provided along with the data. These two datasets can be used in combination for ecological studies, as the two instruments are interoperable, or they can be used as training sets for ZooScan and ZooCAM users. Abstract

IntroductionWhile crucial to ensuring the production of accurate and high-quality data—and to avoid erroneous conclusions—data quality control (QC) in environmental monitoring datasets is still poorly documented.MethodsWith a focus on annual inter-laboratory comparison (ILC) exercises performed in the context of the French coastal monitoring SOMLIT network, we share here a pragmatic approach to QC, which allows the calculation of systematic and random errors, measurement uncertainty, and individual performance. After an overview of the different QC actions applied to fulfill requirements for quality and competence, we report equipment, accommodation, design of the ILC exercises, and statistical methodology specially adapted to small environmental networks (Results, Discussion, ConclusionThe examination of the temporal variations (2001–2021) in the repeatability, reproducibility, and trueness of the SOMLIT network over time confirms the essential role of ILC exercises as a tool for the continuous improvement of data quality in environmental monitoring datasets.

Abstract

Zooplankton analysis represents a bottleneck in marine ecology studies due to the difficulty to obtain zooplankton data. The last decades have seen the intense development of zooplankton imaging systems, to increase the zooplankton data spatio‐temporal resolution as well as enabling the combination of size, taxonomy, and functional traits in aquatic ecology studies. Here, we propose a benchmark between the ZooScan, a commercially available, laboratory‐based scanner, which analyses zooplankton preserved samples, and the ZooCAM, an in‐flow imaging system designed for on‐board live zooplankton imaging. Sixty‐one zooplankton samples collected over the Bay of Biscay in environments ranging from estuarine to offshore blue waters were imaged with both instruments. Zooplankton Normalized Biovolume‐Size Spectra slopes, mean sizes, abundances, and zooplankton community biogeographical patterns were computed for each instrument and compared at the taxonomic group, the sampling stations and the Bay of Biscay scales. Both instruments produced similar zooplankton variables by stations and by taxa and described similar zooplankton community compositions and biogeographical patterns, on the large mesozooplankton size range, i.e., [0.3–3.39] mm ESD. We conclude that the ZooCAM and the ZooScan data can be combined to generate long term or spatially resolved zooplankton time series. Our study shows that benchmarking imaging instruments or techniques (1) offers a robust assessment of interoperability between instruments, mitigating possible instrumental biases, and (2) may be of great interest in the case of instrumental obsolescence or breakdown, to choose the most conservative replacement solution in a long term time series framework. Abstract

The distribution range of the American comb jelly Mnemiopsis leidyi has expanded across Europe for several decades, particularly in the eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea. This study aims to assess its expansion along the French Atlantic coast, mainly in the Bay of Biscay and Iroise Sea, since the first record in 2014. Mnemiopsis leidyi is now clearly established along 500 km of coastline, from the coast of Lorient to Arcachon Bay, which is the southernmost colonised area in the eastern Atlantic to date. It will likely colonise the Spanish Gulf coast in the near future through natural dispersal via currents, as has occurred between the Gironde estuary and Arcachon Bay. We quantify that this species now colonises nearly 45% of the French coastline. The invaded area includes the main estuaries of the Seine, Loire, Gironde and Rhône rivers, where M. leidyi populations may constitute reservoirs for colonising other harbours through merchant vessel traffic via ballast water. Finally, the Marennes- Oléron Bay and Arcachon Bay are the two main spat-producing regions for the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas in France. As M. leidyi consumes bivalve larvae, the potential economic and ecological impacts on this shellfish industry are discussed.

The invaded area includes the main estuaries of the Seine, Loire, Gironde and Rhône rivers, where M. leidyi populations may constitute reservoirs for colonising other harbours through merchant vessel traffic via ballast water. Finally, the Marennes-Oléron Bay and Arcachon Bay are the two main spat-producing regions for the Pacific oyster Magallana gigas in France. Abstract

This study aims at quantifying and characterising microplastics (MP) distribution in the water column of the NW Mediterranean Sea as well as MP ingestion by the 2 main planktivorous fish of the area, sardine and anchovy. Debris of similar sizes were found in all water column samples and in all but 2 fish guts (out of 169). MP were found in 93% of water column samples with an average concentration of 0.23 ± 0.20 MP·m−3, but in only 12% of sardines (0.20 ± 0.69 MP·ind−1) and 11% of anchovies (0.11 ± 0.31 MP·ind−1). Fibres were the only shape of MP encountered and polyethylene terephthalate was the main polymer identified in water columns (61%), sardines (71%) and anchovies (89%). This study confirms the ubiquity of MP in the Mediterranean Sea and imparts low occurrence in fish digestive tracts. • Microplastics were studied in the NW Mediterranean Sea using 17 stations in 2015. • Microplastic concentration averaged 0.23 ± 0.20 MP·m−3 in the water column. • Microplastic ingestion occurred in only 11–12% of anchovies and sardines. • The main polymer type recovered in each sample was polyethylene terephtalate. • Fibres were the only microplastic shape encountered. International audience; During the KEOPS II survey in spring (Oct-Nov 2011), the northeast and southeast region Kerguelen Island (between 46°59S and 50°37 S and 69°50E and 74°59E) were intensively studied to understand the physical and biogeochemical processes governing the onset of the Kerguelen spring bloom. Mesozooplankton community spatial distribution, taxonomy structure, size structure and biomass were studied from 41 zooplankton net tow samples -(0-250m vertical net tows) analyzed both with a ZOOSCAN and a binocular. 13C and 15N content between distinct size fractions, pigment gut contents and respiration rates of of dominant species were measured as well. Here we report on first results obtained along two transects (East-West and North South) and along a lagrangian sampling in the central part of the region during the bloom development. Biomass, abundance and size structures show temporal and spatial differences linked to the different water masses and trophic conditions. Day-night sampling revealed strong variations in abundance and biomass during the bloom phase due to large organisms, mainly euphausiids. Different spatial patterns of zooplankton size spectra were found with the highest slope values on the shelf area showing a large ratio of small organisms and the lowest within the central part of the region.

Abstract

The species composition and seasonal abundance patterns of gelatinous zooplankton are poorly known for many European coastal-zone waters. The seasonal abundance and distribution of the dominant species of hydromedusae along a salinity gradient within the Gironde Estuary, Atlantic coast of France, were evaluated based on monthly surveys, June 2013 to April 2014. The results confirmed the presence of three species considered to be introduced in many coastal ecosystems around the world: Nemopsis bachei (Agassiz, 1849), Blackfordia virginica (Mayer, 1910), and Maeotias marginata (Modeer, 1791). These species were found at salinities ranging from 0 to 22.9 and temperatures ranging from 14.5 to 26.6 ºC, demonstrating their tolerance to a wide range of estuarine environmental conditions. There was a clear succession of the three species that was influenced by temperature and salinity. Blackfordia virginica was the dominant hydromedusae during the warmest months and occurred at very high abundance (up to 634 individuals.m-3 corresponding to 21.40 g.m-3 as wet weight). The seasonal evolution of the size distribution indicated an extended period of release of medusae by hydroid polyps, and rapid growth, covering the whole period of occurrence for B. virginica. Nemopsis bachei also was present during the warmer months but only locally common. In contrast, Maeotias marginata only occurred in low numbers during autumn and had not been previously detected in the Gironde Estuary. Non-native jellyfishes clearly represent a prominent component of the Gironde Estuary, and additional work is needed to understand the potential impacts on the structure and functioning of entire zooplankton community. Abstract

Abstract: During the KEOPS survey, zooplankton was sampled with vertical tows to estimate zooplankton stock and to study its composition and size structure both using traditional taxonomic identification and Optical Plankton Counter (OPC). Mesozooplankton OPC-biomass derived from OPC size spectra and integrated over 200m was variable with average values about 10gCm−2 along transects A and B and at the fixed station KERFIX, and only ∼5gCm−2 along transect C. Stations in the most oceanic area (A11, B11, and C11) presented biomass values 3 times lower than the mean value of their respective transects, highlighting a clear decrease of the biomass beyond the shelf. The mesozooplankton community was dominated by copepods, particularly by large- and medium-size calanoids and small Oithonidae. Large numbers of different copepodites stages and nauplii were found, as well as exuviae, indicating that individuals were in active growing phase over the whole area. Euphausiids, chaetognaths, appendicularians, amphipods, polychaetes, ostracods and salps were found as well. Two reference stations, A3 located in the middle of the bloom on the shelf and C11 in the oceanic waters, were visited several times during the cruise. No particular temporal variations, neither in biomass nor in community structure, were observed, but differences in integrated biomass (average biomass at A3: 10.6gCm−2; at C11: 2.8gCm−2) between oceanic and shelf stations clearly show an enhanced secondary production on the shelf. Additional measurements at some stations were performed in order to quantify ingestion (gut contents) and respiration rates on key species and size groups. Gut pigment contents were higher during the first half of the survey at both stations, showing clear temporal changes probably linked to the prey field, with lower values always reported in the oceanic waters compared to the shelf. Values of respiration and ingestion rates extrapolated from OPC size spectra using published allometric relationships are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
