From ground-based observations of Vesta, it is well-known that the vestan surface has a large variation in albedo. Analysis of images acquired by the Hubble Space Telescope allowed production of the first color maps of Vesta and showed a diverse surface in terms of reflectance. Thanks to images collected by the Dawn spacecraft at Vesta, it became obvious that these specific units observed previously can be linked to geological features. The presence of the darkest material mostly around impact craters and scattered in the Western hemisphere has been associated with carbonaceous chondrite contamination [4]; whereas the brightest materials are believed to result from exposure of unaltered material from the subsurface of Vesta (in fresh looking impact crater rims and in Rheasilvia's ejecta and rim remants). Here we focus on a distinct material characterized by a steep slope in the near-IR relative to all other kinds of materials found on Vesta. It was first detected when combining Dawn Framing Camera (FC) color images in Clementine false-color composites [5] during the Approach phase of the mission (100000 to 5200 km from Vesta). We investigate the mineralogical and elemental composition of this material and its relationship with the HEDs (Howardite-Eucrite- Diogenite group of meteorites).

NASA's Dawn spacecraft entered orbit around asteroid (4) Vesta in July 2011 for a yearlong mapping orbit. The surface of Vesta as imaged by the Dawn Framing Camera (FC) revealed a surface that is unlike any asteroid we have visited so far with a spacecraft. Albedo and color variations on Vesta are the most diverse in the asteroid belt with a majority of these linked to distinct compositional units on the asteroid s surface. FC discovered dark material on Vesta. These low albedo surface features were first observed during Rotational Characterization 3 phase at a resolution of approx. 487 m/pixel. Here we explore the composition and possible meteoritical analogs for the dark material on Vesta.

Upon approach to asteroid 4 Vesta, the Dawn mission included a dedicated satellite search observation of the operational sphere of the spacecraft around Vesta. Discovery of moons of Vesta would constrain theories of satellite f()rmation. The sequence using the framing camera and clear filter includes three mosaics of six stations acquired on July 9-10. 2011. Each station consists of four sets with three different exposures, 1.5,20 and 270 s. We also processed and scanned the optical navigation sequences until Vesta filled the field of view. Analysis of images involves looking for moving objects in the mosaics and identifying catalogued stars, subtracting them from the image and examining residual objects for evidence of bodies in orbit around Vesta. Celestial coordinates were determined using Astrometry.net, an astrometry calibration service (http://astrometry.net/use.html). We processed the images by subtracting dark and bias fields and dividing by a Hatfield. Images were further filtered subtracting a box car filter (9x9 average) to remove effects of scattered light from Vesta itself. Images were scanned by eye for evidence of motion in directions different from the background stars. All objects were compared with Hubble Space Telescope's Guide Star Catalogue and US Naval Observatory's UCAC3 catalog. We report findings from these observations and analysis, including limits of magnitude, size and motion of objects in orbit around Vesta. The Dawn mission has completed its Survey and High-Altitude Mapping Orbit (HAMO) phases at Vesta, resulting in 60-70 meter per pixel imaging, high-resolution image-derived topography, and visual and infrared spectral data covering up to approx.50 degrees north latitude (the north pole was in shadow during these mission phases). These data have provided unprecedented views of the south polar impact structure first detected in HST imaging [1], now named Rheasilvia, and in addition hint at the existence of a population of ancient basins. Smaller craters are seen at all stages from fresh to highly-eroded, with some exposing atypically bright or dark material. The morphology of some craters has been strongly influenced by regional slope. Detailed studies of crater morphology are underway. We have begun making crater counts to constrain the relative ages of different regions of the surface, and are working towards developing an absolute cratering chronology for Vesta's surface.

The author has identified the following significant results. ERTS-1 imagery in a variety of formats was used to locate linear, tonal, and hazy features and to relate them to areas of hydrocarbon production in the Williston Basin of North Dakota, eastern Montana, and northern South Dakota. Derivative maps of rectilinear, curvilinear, tonal, and hazy features were made using standard laboratory techniques. Mapping of rectilinears on both bands 5 and 7 over the entire region indicated the presence of a northeast-southwest and a northwest-southeast regional trend which is indicative of the bedrock fracture pattern in the basin. Curved lines generally bound areas of unique tone, maps of tonal patterns repeat many of the boundaries seen on curvilinear maps. Tones were best analyzed on spring and fall imagery in the Williston Basin. It is postulated that hazy areas are caused by atmospheric phenomena. The ability to use ERTS imagery as an exploration tool was examined where petroleum and gas are presently produced (Bottineau Field, Nesson and Antelope anticlines, Redwing Creek, and Cedar Creek anticline). It is determined that some tonal and linear features coincide with location of present production in Redwing and Cedar Creeks. In the remaining cases, targets could not be sufficiently well defined to justify this method.

A method for conditioning, and thus enabling retrieval of intelligence from, magnetic tapes after damage from heat has caused the tape to wrinkle and curl severely thereby reducing tape width to less than one-half its original size. The damaged tape is superposed on a first piece of splicing tape with the oxide side of the magnetic tape in contact with the adhesive side of the splicing tape and then carefully smoothed by a special tool. A second piece of splicing tape is placed on the backing side of the magnetic tape then the resulting tape stack is trimmed to the original width of the magnetic tape. After the first piece of splicing tape is carefully removed from the oxide side of the damaged magnetic tape, the resulting magnetic tape is then ready to be placed into a recorder for playback.

The chemical reactivity of several minerals thought to be present in Martian fines is tested with respect to gases known in the Martian atmosphere. In these experiments, liquid water is excluded from the system, environmental temperatures are maintained below 0 C, and the solar illumination spectrum is stimulated in the visible and UV using a xenon arc lamp. Reactions are detected by mass spectrometric analysis of the gas phase over solid samples. No reactions were detected for Mars nominal gas over sulfates, nitrates, chloride, nontronite clay, or magnetite. Oxidation was not observed for basaltic glass, nontronite, and magnetite. However, experiments incorporating SO2 gas an expected product of volcanism and intrusive volatile release - gave positive results. Displacement of CO2 by SO2 occurred in all four carbonates tested. These reactions are catalyzed by irradiation with the solar simulator. A calcium nitrate hydrate released NO2 in the presence of SO2. These results have implications for the cycling of atmospheric CO2, H2O, and N2 through the regolith.

Modified NRZ (non-return-to-zero) code immunizes record and playback systems against dc drift and bit slippage. In order to maximize bit packing density improved code called J-NRZ gives 100 percent NRZ efficiently and solves DC drift problem by adding check bits in specified format when long string is encountered. Remainder of data stream is encoded in NRZ format.

Linear elastic stress distributions obtained from a refined finite element mesh are used in conjunction with the tensor polynomial failure criterion to predict the initiation of failure in symmetric, finite-width graphite-epoxy laminates under tensile loading. Results are presented for a wide variety of laminates including: (+ and - theta)s angle-ply; cross-ply (0/90)s and (90/0)s; and quasi-isotropic (90/0/+ and - 45)s and (+ and -45/0/90)s. It is shown that the elastic stress distributions generally compare favorably with other published results, but also indicate improved satisfaction of the stress-free boundary conditions and indicate some differences in the singular behavior of selected stress components at the free edge. The tensor polynomial failure criterion is used to predict the location and mode of first failure. Examination of the individual terms of the polynomial indicates different modes of failure depending upon the laminate configuration.

A quasi three dimensional finite element stress analysis of idealized damage zones in composite laminates is presented. The damage zones consist of a long centered groove or cutout extending one or two layers in depth from both top and bottom surfaces of a thin composite laminate. Elastic results are presented for compressive loading of four and eight layer laminates. It is shown that a boundary layer exists near the cutout edge similar to that previously shown to exist along free edges. The cutout is shown to produce significant interlaminar stresses in the interior of the laminate away from free cutout edges. The interlaminar stresses are also shown to contribute to failure which is defined using the Tsai-Wu failure criteria.

Damaged tapes can now be repaired at home as long as damage does not extend to layer-to-layer adhesion within tape roll. Splice repaired section into good roll or cassette for copying. Every effort should be made to complete copying on first run, because fidelity in repaired section deteriorates with each repetition.

The design concepts and philosophies of the lunar module instrumentation subsystem are discussed along with manufacturing and systems integration. The experience gained from the program is discussed, and recommendations are made for making the subsystem more compatible and flexible in system usage. Characteristics of lunar module caution and warning circuits are presented.
