Background: The iron and steel industries are among the most dangerous workplaces in the world compared to other manufacturing industries. Workers are exposed to multiple occupational hazards, which predispose them to high risks of both fatal and non-fatal injuries. Currently, the data on the global prevalence and associated risk factors for occupational injuries in the iron and steel industries is fragmented and incomplete. This study was undertaken to address this issue by pooling data relating to the prevalence of occupational injuries and its associated factors among workers in iron and steel industries studies around the world. Methods: The search was conducted systematically using PubMed, HINARI, EMBASE and Google Scholar for published studies in English that reported on occupational injuries and associated risk factors among workers in iron and steel industries. MetaXL version 5.3 software was used in the meta-analysis to estimate the pooled prevalence of occupational injuries and associated risk factors among workers in the iron and steel industries. The study protocol has been registered with PROSPERO, number CRD42022344258. Results: Of the 447 articles identified, 15 studies from 9 countries met the inclusion criteria. The pooled prevalence estimate of occupational injury was 0.55 (95% CI: 0.15, 0.93). The pooled results indicated that the odds of having an occupational injury were 4.06 times higher among workers who did not use personal protective equipment compared to those who used such equipment. Likewise the odds of occupational injuries was increased by 1.65 among night shift workers compared to the counterpart. Conclusions: The global prevalence of occupational injuries in iron and steel industries was 55%. The results indicate that night work shift and the lack of use of personal protective equipment has a higher impact than other factors in the occurrence of occupational injuries in the iron and steel industries. AbstractPurposeMaterials and methodsResultsConclusions\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION:Immigrant workers are more likely to suffer work-related injuries compared to native-born Canadians. Their physical rehabilitation usually involves physiotherapy. This study sought to better understand the experiences of injured immigrant workers receiving compensation and physiotherapy treatments.We conducted a qualitative study using an interpretive descriptive methodology. Semi-structured interviews were completed with 10 compensated immigrant workers about the physiotherapy services they received. Transcripts were analyzed thematically and with an intersectional lens.Two major themes were identified: 1) complex pathways to physiotherapy, and 2) key pillars of physiotherapy experiences. The first theme demonstrates that a lack of familiarity with the health and compensation systems, delayed access to physiotherapy, and cumulative burdens complicate the care of immigrant workers. The second theme shows that moral/emotional support, pain relief, and the recognition of sociocultural beliefs and fears are key aspects to improving the experiences of care for these workers.This study offers new insights into physiotherapy in the context of a work injury, which may help physiotherapists adapt care to the complex needs of immigrant workers. • Aviation manufacturing is a key industry in Kansas with potential safety concerns. • Workers' compensation claims that accrued indemnity from 2014 to 2022 were examined. • The median total cost of such claims was $26,941 in 2022 dollars. • The hand and shoulder together comprised over half of claims. • Overexertion and repetitive motion were the most common causes. Workers' compensation injuries entail burdensome financial and social costs. This study's objective was to describe cost and frequency of workplace injuries in aviation manufacturing in the state of Kansas using workers' compensation data. Manufacturing incurs more workers' compensation claims in Kansas than any other industry, and aviation contributes more of those claims than any other sub sector. Workers' compensation insurance and reporting are required in the state of Kansas. Data were provided by the Kansas Department of Labor (KDOL) and included all closed workers' compensation claims entailing indemnity and medical costs filed in the state from 2014 to 2022. Cost of claim data were normalized to 2022 U.S. dollars and data were analyzed as a function of percentage and claim cost by body part, type of injury, cause of injury, specific musculoskeletal disorder type, and as a function of age and gender injury rates. Aviation claims entailed a median total cost of $26,941 and represented 8% of all closed claims filed in the state from 2014 to 2022. The grand total direct cost over the nine-year period was $75,404,147. Medical costs comprised 48.6% of all costs, indemnity 45.0%, and legal 6.4%. The most frequently injured body part was the hand/wrist (35.9%) followed by the shoulder (20.6%), and the most expensive body parts were related to the back. Overexertion (38.6%) was the most common cause followed by repetitive motion (22.8%). Work-related musculoskeletal disorders were the most common type accounting for 67.4% of all claims. Men and workers aged 55–64 incurred slightly higher claim rates than average. A sharp decrease in number of claims closed in 2021 coincided with production shutdowns the previous year related to the Covid-19 pandemic and design issues. Aviation manufacturing is a key industry in Kansas and this study is the first known to describe costs and frequencies of workplace injuries in the sector using workers' compensation data. This guide to the most problematic and costly injuries in aviation manufacturing helps practitioners prioritize prevention strategies to most effectively reduce workplace injury and helps safety and health practitioners in prioritizing prevention efforts to reduce the most severe and costly aviation manufacturing injuries and illnesses. BACKGROUND: Considering current labour shortages, the recent increase in the number of aging workers in the labour market is deemed economically beneficial. However, due to specific characteristics (e.g. biological, generational), aging workers take longer to recover and return to work after an occupational injury. Yet, few studies have examined the rehabilitation, return, and stay at work process of aging workers and current knowledge makes it difficult for stakeholders to identify which interventions to use with this specific population. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe which interventions are used in the rehabilitation, return, and stay at work process of aging workers having suffered an occupational injury. METHODS: We conducted a five-step scoping review. Five databases were used for the literature search. A qualitative analysis of the retained manuscripts was conducted. RESULTS: Our analysis led to the extraction of information from seven manuscripts that concern the rehabilitation, return, and stay at work process of aging workers who suffered an occupational injury exclusively. We identified 19 interventions (e.g. work capacity development, work task modifications, permanent part-time work, and alternative roles) and were described according to the different phases of the Cycle of Work Disability Prevention (CWDP). CONCLUSIONS: This study offers informative, non-prescriptive, and operational interventions useful for stakeholders who support aging workers. Purpose: The construction industry is a diverse sector with exposure to multiple psychosocial and environmental workplace hazards that increase the risk of injury. This scoping review aims to consolidate the existing literature on the physical and psychosocial determinants influencing the risk of occupational physical injuries among construction workers globally. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the PRISMA extension checklist guided. Literature searches were performed between June and October 2023 in electronic academic databases. Results: A total of 77 studies were identified, encompassing various geographical regions, including North America (n = 29), Africa (n = 18), Europe (n = 12), Asia (n = 9), the Middle East (n = 5), and Oceania (n = 4). The review identified physical and psychosocial factors in 3 domains influencing occupational physical injuries: workplace physical environment (eg, exposure to physical hazards, availability and utilization of personal protective equipment, company size, and job type), workplace culture (eg, psychosocial stressors, gender-related barriers, migrant and ethnic disparities, educational background), and physical wellbeing, health and aging (eg, age, obesity, sleep quality, marital stats, and physical health status). Notably, workers from social minority groups (eg, women, ethnic and migrant workers) of young (<25 years old) or older ages (45-55 years old) employed in smaller construction companies are vulnerable to increased injury risk and exposure to physical and psychosocial hazards in the workplace. Conclusion: The review emphasizes a global paucity of research examining the implications of physical and psychosocial factors on injury risk within the construction industry. Future research should prioritize investigating the impact of psychosocial hazards on younger and older workers to detect age-related differences in injury rate, treatment access, and work-related health outcomes. Workers' compensation systems aim to financially support injured workers. However, seeking compensation often leads to poorer physical and mental health outcomes. This review examines previous studies to investigate the relationship between workers' compensation and mental health and self-harm outcomes. A three-tiered search strategy across five databases identified studies that examined workers' compensation claims as an exposure or risk factor, with outcomes related to mental health, self-harm and suicidality. Nine full-text studies were included; however, heterogeneity limited generalizability. Most studies supported an association between pursuing compensation and poorer mental health and self-harm outcomes. Some studies attributed this to specific aspects of the system such as justice perception and navigation of the claims system. Findings suggest an association between workers' compensation and mental health or self-harm outcomes. Inconclusive findings highlight the need for further research. OBJECTIVE: Leisure-time physical activity (PA) has been hypothesized to reduce the likelihood of occupational injuries, but it is unclear whether this association varies between workplace and commuting injuries. The aim of this study was to examine the association between PA and risk of workplace and commuting injuries. METHODS: Data were derived from the Finnish Public Sector study including 82 716 person-observations (48 116 participants). PA was requested repeatedly in four questionnaire surveys between 2000–2012. The average level of PA from two subsequent questionnaires was used to assess long-term PA. To obtain a 1-year incidence of injuries, participants were linked to occupational injury records from the national register. Logistic regression analysis with generalized estimating equations was used to examine the association between PA and injury risk. The analysis was adjusted for age, sex, education, work schedule, job demand, sleep difficulties, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, and depression for workplace and commuting injuries, and workplace injuries were additionally adjusted for physical heaviness of an occupation and injury risk by occupation. RESULTS: Higher level of PA was associated with a lower risk of workplace injuries compared to inactive participants [odds ratio (OR) 0.85, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.73–0.98]. This association was most marked in the ≥50-year-old age group (OR 0.78, 95% CI 0.64–0.99). No association between the PA and the risk for commuting injuries was observed. CONCLUSION: Higher PA is associated with lower risk of workplace injuries particularly among older employees.

Background: World-wide ocular trauma in work places is one of the major cause of blindness. It has a significant socio-economic impact as it affects mostly the younger individuals of society who are only incumbent in most of the families. Objectives: To provide epidemiological data and occupational profile on ocular injuries in adult population that may help in future planning and implementation of preventive and safety strategies. Methodology: A descriptive, observational, cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2019 to December 2019. By a non-probability based sampling technique 151 patients were selected who complied with the inclusion criteria. After taking a detailed history, patients were subjected to proper clinical examination and required investigations were done. Result: The mean age of the study population was 34.28±2.49 years. 57.62% of the population suffered an injury in work place. 63.63% people were aware of using protective measure in work place but only 11% knew that employer was bound to provide the same, for which despite of the knowledge only 17.27% were actually using it. People with higher education were significantly more knowledgeable (p< 0.00001) and more keener (p=0.01) to use the protective devices. Conclusion: Employees are to be made well aware about their rights, risks in job and usage of protective devices by health education and awareness campaign.

Introduction: Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) presents with symptoms like numbness, tingling, and weakness along the median nerve pathway. Risk factors include prolonged wrist positions, repetitive muscle contractions, and exposure to vibrations. Aim: To determine the prevalence of CTS among healthcare practitioners at vaccine facilities in Saudi Arabia. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study on a total of 150 healthcare practitioners (aged 25-30 years) working in vaccination centres in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia were recruited. The study was conducted from November 2021 to March 2022. The authors collected demographic data, Body Mass Index (BMI) and work shift information, and administered two validated questionnaires, the Boston Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Questionnaire (BCTSQ) and the Duruoz Hand Index (DHI). CTS symptoms were diagnosed using Phalen’s and Arm Raising Test (ART). Results: Of the 150 practitioners (aged 25-45 years), predominantly in the 25-30 age group, n=65 (44.0%) tested positive on the Phalen’s test, and n=65 (43.5%) on the ART. Females had higher BCTSQ scores, while DHI scores were similar across genders. Spearman's correlation analysis showed positive correlations between BCTSQ and DHI, and a moderate negative correlation between ART and DHI. Logistic regression analysed factors affecting the likelihood of CTS diagnosed by ART and Phalen’s Test. Higher BCTSQ and DHI scores increased the likelihood of CTS (ART: BCTSQ OR=0.843, DHI OR=1.064; Phalen’s Test: BCTSQ OR=0.830, DHI OR=1.069). Conclusion: During the Coronavirus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, the prevalence of CTS among healthcare practitioners at vaccine centres in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia reached up to 43-44%. The present study highlights that day shift workers face a higher risk of CTS compared to night shift workers, likely due to heavier daytime workloads. This underscores the need for ergonomic interventions and workload management, especially during high-demand periods like the vaccination campaign, to safeguard healthcare workers’ health and productivity.

Abstract Background Despite the relative importance, the prevalence of workplace safety and health issues in hospital food service workers is not well studied. This study describes the epidemiology of work-related injuries and occupational diseases among hospital food service workers (FSWs) in a tertiary hospital in Singapore. Methods Using a total population sampling approach, a cross-sectional self-administered questionnaire was distributed to all FSWs employed at a major tertiary hospital in Singapore. Results The response rate was 98.4% (n = 125). The overall prevalence of workplace injuries and musculoskeletal symptoms was 35% (n = 43) and 53% (n = 65) respectively. The most common workplace injuries were cuts/lacerations (35.8%), muscle strain (25.4%) and burns (19.4%). This study evaluated the occupational injuries and health hazards associated with fishing as an occupation among non-traditional rural tribal fishing communities in the coastal region of Tamil Nadu, India. This cross-sectional study included a total of 170 individuals belonging to a fishing community, comprising both male (n = 82) and female (n = 88) participants. The demographic details including occupational history, lifestyle characteristics, socio-economic status, personal habits, and health status were assessed through the questionnaire survey. The fishing community has a low socioeconomic status and poor literacy, lifestyle, and personal habits. The mean age of the participants was 38.8 yrs (male 34.8; female 39.9 yrs). Only 10% reported usage of personal protective equipment (PPE), and the work duration varied from 8 to 24 hrs in a day. While male subjects reported smoking habits (12%) and alcohol consumption (23%), none of the females reported alcohol consumption and smoking habits. The major occupational injuries that occurred were due to catfish (72%) and oysters (48%). A large number of female subjects reported musculoskeletal pains. The body mass index of about 28% of fishermen was above the normal range. Abnormal blood sugar, blood pressure, and respiratory and neurological symptoms were the other major health complaints. The major environmental hazards reported were salinity, solar radiation, tides, and high wind. Injuries from handling fish and oysters were observed to be the major occupational burden. Additonally, a high prevalence of musculoskeletal pain and chronic health illness was commonly observed among the fishers. Background: Hospital patient‐care workers have high occupational injury rates. While physical hazards within hospital work environments are established determinants of injury, social exposures may also contribute. This study examined how reports of unfair treatment at work, a dimension of work‐related experiences of discrimination, were associated with injury among hospital‐based patient‐care workers. Methods: We used data from the Boston Hospital Workers Health Study, a longitudinal cohort of nurses and nursing assistants at two Boston‐area hospitals. In 2018, we conducted a worker survey asking about three types of unfair treatment at work and occupational injuries during the past year. We used mixed‐effects logistic regression models to evaluate associations between specific types, total load, and high‐frequency exposure of unfair treatment with injury, adjusting for age, gender, race and ethnicity, job title, and unit type. Results: Among 1001 respondents, 21% reported being humiliated in front of others at work, 28% reported being watched more closely than other workers, and 47% reported having to work twice as hard as others for the same treatment. For each type of unfair treatment, we observed a monotonic relationship with occupational injury wherein increasing frequency of exposure was associated with increased odds of injury. We also observed monotonic relationships between total load and high‐frequency exposure to unfair treatment and odds of injury. Conclusions: Work‐related unfair treatment is associated with injury among hospital workers. Introduction : Motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are the leading cause of work-related deaths in the United States. The increasing popularity of the competitive rideshare market and the lack of oversight over workforce health and safety limits understanding of the current occupational hazards and associated risk factors faced by this precarious workforce. The objective of this analysis was to determine what the personal, social and occupational risk factors for work-related crashes in rideshare drivers are in the United States and suggest further research required to understand occupational health risks and opportunities for interventions. Material and Methods: We conducted a survey of a convenience sample of rideshare and taxi drivers using an online questionnaire. Rideshare respondents (n = 277) were recruited through an email that was distributed to people who subscribe to TheRideshareGuy.com. We examined the general characteristics of rideshare drivers by history of work-related MVCs and logistic regression models were used to determine major predictors of MVCs. Results: Of 276 rideshare drivers that reported their crash history, one-third (n = 91, 33%) reported being involved in a work-related crash. Results from a multivariable logistic regression model showed rideshare MVCs were more likely in older drivers (aOR for 10 year increases in age, 1.55, p = 0.001), if drivers undertook 10 or more rideshare trips per day (aOR 1.84, p = 0.041), frequently or very frequently were driving on unfamiliar roads (aOR 1.72, p = 0.048) and driving whilst tired (aOR 3.03, p = 0.003). Conclusion: Precarious workers and health and safety is emerging as a major area of research focus. There is a unique opportunity to explore the occupational health risks in rideshare drivers to provide interventions that encourage growth of a healthy and fit rideshare workforce and promote work practices and future regulations aimed at improving safe work practices. Practical applications: This analysis paints a complex picture of personal and occupational factors that are associated with MVCs in rideshare drivers suggesting that additional policy development related to occupational health and safety of rideshare drivers could be constructive. Conclusion: FSWs with jobs involving cooking and preparation of food, and those with obesity, are at higher risk of sustaining workplace injuries or musculoskeletal symptoms. Work-related injuries can harm mental health and affect other facets of injured workers' lives. Clinicians must be aware of the problem of emotional distress and treat the whole patient after a workplace injury. More education and information are needed for clinicians, employers, and workers' compensation carriers so that injured workers can be properly screened for mental health issues and supported during treatment. Background: Registered nurses (RNs) represent the largest segment of the health care workforce and have unique job demands and occupational health considerations. The purpose of this study was to describe the incidence, cost, and causes of occupational injuries among RNs in Washington State and to quantify the cumulative cost and burden of each type of injury, relative to all injuries among RNs. Methods: Annual injury claims data covered under Washington State workers' compensation (WC) fund were analyzed over a 13-year period (2007–2019). Annual mean incidence and cost of injuries were calculated and stratified by nature, source, and event/exposure. Negative binomial regression models were used to examine trends in injury incidence over time, for injury incidence overall, and by the most common injury classifications. Results: Between 2007 and 2019, 10,839 WC claims were filed and accepted for Washington State RNs (annual M = 834), totaling more than US$65 million. No significant trend in overall injury incidence was observed (incidence rate ratio [IRR]: 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] = [0.94, 1.05]). The most common injury exposures were bodily reaction and exertion, contact with objects and equipment, falls, and assaults and violent acts. Discussion: To our knowledge, this is the first broad study of the incidence and costs of occupational injuries among RNs across all workplace settings. We identified high-cost, high-frequency incidence rates of musculoskeletal, sharp, and violence-related occupational injury claims, highlighting intervention targets. Implications for Occupational Health Practice : Policy makers, health systems, and occupational health nurse leaders can use this information to identify priority areas where evidence-based occupational health and prevention programs are most needed. OBJECTIVE: This study provides the global-, regional- and country-level estimates on the work-related burden of diseases and accidents for 2019, including deaths, disability adjusted life years (DALY) and economic losses. METHODS: Data on occupational illnesses and injuries from international organizations, institutions, and public websites were used. Risk ratios (RR) and population attributable fractions (PAF) for the risk factor-outcome pairs were derived from the literature. Estimated mortality and DALY for a group of seven major diseases covering 120 risk-outcome pairs attributable to work were calculated for 181 countries. RESULTS: Globally, 2.9 million deaths were attributed to work, with 2.58 million deaths due to work-related diseases and 0.32 million related to occupational injuries. Globally, work-related diseases with a long latency period are increasing, while the number of occupational injuries has decreased. Work-related circulatory diseases were the major cause of 912 000 deaths globally, followed by 843 000 work-related malignant neoplasms. In high-income, American, Eastern European and Western Pacific World Health Organization (WHO) regions, however, work-related malignant neoplasms comprised the biggest disease group. DALY attributable to work were estimated to be 180 million in 2019, with an associated economic loss of 5.8% of global GDP. New estimates of psychosocial factors increased the global loss. CONCLUSIONS: The burden of work-related diseases and injuries increased by 26% from 2.3 million annual deaths in 2014 to 2.9 million in 2019. The DALY attributable to work have also substantially increased from 123 million in 2014 to 180 million in 2019 (47% increase). We found large regional and country variations.

Occupational injury is a serious global public health issue that causes morbidity, disability, and fatality at work. The food and beverage processing business has the most significant rate of occupational injuries, making it the most dangerous occupation among industrial industries. Various labor hazards have been reported to beverage workers. Against this background, the objective of the research was to assess the magnitude and predictors of occupational injury among employees in the beverage industry in Harar and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted at a beverage factory, with 675 respondents chosen randomly. Qualitative data was collected through interviews with key informants. The data was analyzed using Epi-Data statistical software and SPSS. Multiple logistic analysis, descriptive analysis, binary logistic, and crude logistic regression analysis were used. A p-value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The occupational injury rate is 20.9%, with fingers and hands being the most common type of trauma. Sleeping difficulties, contract employment status, and technical field work are associated with injuries. 28-34-year-olds are 55% less likely, and one year of experience is 85% less likely. Challenges include inconsistent safety measures and a lack of organizational commitment, especially for contract workers. The prevalence of occupational injuries among beverage industry employees was high. Technical departments, contract employment, and the prevalence of sleeping problems were revealed to be risk factors for occupational injuries. At the same time, one year of experience and the age range of 28–34 were found to be protective. Among the study participants, difficulties such as poor use of personal protective equipment and a lack of a consistent supply of personal protective equipment were noticed. As a result, firms must increase occupational safety measures, such as providing and replenishing personal protective equipment, focusing on contract employees.

Abstract Background Penetrating cardiac injuries are rare but often fatal, with 16–55% mortality. We report a patient who suffered a non-fatal occupational cardiac injury. Case presentation A 47-year-old man was operating an ironworker machine. A thin 3-cm metal fragment catapulted from the machine piercing the chest wall and the right ventricular outflow tract (RVOT), burrowing into the interventricular septum (IVS). The patient remained hemodynamically stable and walked to the nearest hospital. ECG-gated computed tomography revealed the exact location of the fragment within the IVS, allowing for detailed preoperative planning. The fragment was removed through a sternotomy and an incision through the RVOT. The postoperative course was uneventful. Conclusions This case underscores the value of detailed preoperative imaging and the wide spectrum of clinical scenarios of penetrating cardiac injuries.

Background: Total knee arthroplasty (TKA) is a commonly performed knee surgery and prior arthroscopic meniscectomy (AM) has been linked to an increased risk of TKA in the general population. Objective: To study the relationship between AM and TKA among injured workers whose medical care is paid for under workers' compensation (WC). Method: A total of 17,247 lost-time claims depicting all arthroscopic knee surgical procedures performed from 2007 to 2017 were followed to the end of 2022 and analyzed. Results: The odds ratio of undergoing a TKA for those with a preceding AM is 2.20, controlling for age, sex, and attorney involvement. Background and Objectives: Needle stick injury (NSI) is the most dreaded occupational health hazard affecting a healthcare worker (HCW) psychologically and physically. The risk of infection post needle stick injury ranges between 1.9% to greater than 40% for HBV infections, 2.7-10% for HCV and 0.2-0.44% for HIV infections. As per National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) records, nursing staff is at highest risk (43%) followed by physicians (28%). The main objective of this study was to evaluate knowledge of nursing staff about needle stick injuries and to study factors leading to such incidents in their working areas, impart them knowledge regarding the same and fill gaps in knowledge. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional retrospective analysis involving nursing staff and students. p values were calculated using SPSS software. Results: Overall NSI prevalence among nursing staff and students was 51.6% whereas in more exposed and less exposed group was 47.45% and 10.16% respectively (p=0.2056). The most common cause of NSI incident was recapping of needle (38.5%) followed by transferring needle to sharp container (35%). Literature on occupational risks among organic farmers is scarce. This study explored safety practices and non-fatal injuries among organic producers, and the role of sociodemographic, work, and farm characteristics on safety and injury. Cross sectional survey of certified organic crop producers in the Southwest (SW) region of the United States (US). The Organic Integrity Database was used for recruitment. Data were collected through an electronic and paper survey. Analyses were conducted on 115 cases; response rate was estimated at 25%. A high majority of respondents owned their operation and were younger than 65 years, male, educated beyond high-school, and non-Hispanic whites. Less than half had more than 10 years of experience in organic farming; one-third worked off the farm year-round. Safety practices were very basic despite the widespread use of equipment and machinery, and limited to wearing normal clothing and apparel such hats and glasses. About half of respondents (52.6%) reported non-fatal injuries in the past year; and one-third (32.7%) time lost due to injuries. The overall cumulative incidence rate was estimated at 5.3 injuries per 10 workers within the last year. The injury rate decreased with hours worked. Significant differences were found on gender and education level and safety practices, with female respondents and the more educated being more proactive in practicing safety. Those working less than 40 h/week, in farms smaller than 50 acres, using light machinery or compact utility tractors, and tractors without roll-over protection reported significantly higher injury frequency compared to their counterparts. This study contributes unique data on an essential workforce not captured by current occupational injury and illness surveillance systems. It identifies important personal and contextual factors that may contribute to safety and injury in this population. The findings indicate the need to promote safety and prevent injuries that result in work time lost. This study may also inform future occupational safety and health research and practice, including surveillance, injury prevention programs that target certain workers and production practices, and policies that support and protect the organic farmer. Background: This study introduced a novel approach for predicting occupational injury severity by leveraging deep learning-based text classification techniques to analyze unstructured narratives. Unlike conventional methods that rely on structured data, our approach recognizes the richness of information within injury narrative descriptions with the aim of extracting valuable insights for improved occupational injury severity assessment. Methods: Natural language processing (NLP) techniques were harnessed to preprocess the occupational injury narratives obtained from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) from January 2015 to June 2023. The methodology involved meticulous preprocessing of textual narratives to standardize text and eliminate noise, followed by the innovative integration of Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and Global Vector (GloVe) word embeddings for effective text representation. The proposed predictive model adopts a novel Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) architecture and is further refined through model optimization, including random search hyperparameters and in-depth feature importance analysis. The optimized Bi-LSTM model has been compared and validated against other machine learning classifiers which are naïve Bayes, support vector machine, random forest, decision trees, and K-nearest neighbor. Results: The proposed optimized Bi-LSTM models' superior predictability, boasted an accuracy of 0.95 for hospitalization and 0.98 for amputation cases with faster model processing times. Interestingly, the feature importance analysis revealed predictive keywords related to the causal factors of occupational injuries thereby providing valuable insights to enhance model interpretability. Conclusion: Our proposed optimized Bi-LSTM model offers safety and health practitioners an effective tool to empower workplace safety proactive measures, thereby contributing to business productivity and sustainability. Purpose: Based on the theoretical framework of the Model of Preventive Behaviours at Work, the aim of this study was to describe the the occupational rehabilitation strategies the literature reports that support workers who have suffered an occupational injury in adopting preventive behaviours. Methods: To conduct this scoping review, we used a systematic methodology in 7 steps : (1) definition of the research question and inclusion/exclusion criteria; (2) scientific and gray literature search; (3) determination of manuscripts' eligibility; (4) extraction and charting of information; (5) quality assessment; (6) interpretation; and (7) knowledge synthesis. Results: We selected 46 manuscripts of various types (e.g. randomized trials, qualitative studies, governmental documents). Manuscripts were mainly of good or high quality according to our quality assessment. The strategies for coaching, engaging, educating and collaborating were mostly reported in the literature to support the development of the six preventive behaviours during occupational rehabilitation. The results also suggest that heterogeneity exists regarding the specificity of the strategies reported in the literature, which may have hindered our ability to provide rich and detailed descriptions. Literature also mainly describes individually oriented behaviours and reports strategies requiring a low level of worker involvement, which represent issues to adress in future researh projects. Conclusion: The strategies described in this article reprensent concrete levers that occupational rehabilitation professionals can use to support workers in the adoption of preventive behaviours at work on return from having suffered an occupational injury. Background and Aim: Occupational injury is any personal injury that can lead to disease, disability, or death due to accidents sustained by workers while performing their work. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of occupational injuries and associated factors among workers of textile and garment factories in Mekelle City, Northern Ethiopia during the era of COVID‐19. Methods: A cross‐ectional study was conducted among 348 Textile and Garment factories in Mekelle City, Northern Ethiopia on September and October 2020. Data were collected using a semi‐structured face‐to‐face interview questionnaire by trained data collectors and supervisors. Occupational injury was assessed by a yes/no question "Have you had any injury related to your occupation in the last 12 months?." Epi Data version 3.1 was used to enter data and Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23 was used for data analysis. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to determine the independent determinants of occupational injury, and variables with p < 0.05 were considered as statistically significant. Results: The annual prevalence rate of occupational injury among textile and garment factories was 27.8% (95% confidence interval [CI] = 23.2−32.9%). Factors like being a male (AOR = 3.65; 95% CI = 1.92−6.92), job satisfaction (AOR = 0.22; 95% CI = 0.11−0.43), sleeping disorder (AOR = 3.47; 95% CI = 1.91−6.32), job stress (AOR = 2.62; 95% CI = 1.44−4.73), and safety and health training (AOR = 0.40; 95% CI = 0.22−0.74) were significantly associated with the occurrence of occupational injury. Introduction: With there being 12 commercial airlines within the U.K and over 4 billion passengers travelling by aircraft every year, it is of no surprise that thousands of men and women are employed as cabin crew. Physical demands imposed upon cabin crew have long been recognized and known to place this particular population at an increased risk of experiencing a work-related injury. Whilst previous research would also suggest that there is a relationship between footwear and the occurrence of musculoskeletal (MSK) lower limb symptoms, there is a need to consider such a relationship specifically among an aviation cabin crew population. Methods: Quantitative data was obtained from a sample of 250 junior crew at a leading airline in the Middle East over 12 months. The sample involved both female and male crew of a healthy BMI who were aged between 22-30 years. All participants were asked closed questions with regard to their lower limb health and footwear. Dynamic gait scans utilizing a Podotech scanner were also used to assess the participant's gait and validate other data. Results: The screening found that 34% of the crew were found to have an MSK podiatric issue with 30% requiring orthoses. Of the 34%, 30% of this group had footwear issues. Common biomechanical issues were identified in the sample group. A holistic approach to care that included the provision of aviation podiatry allowed longer-term treatment outcomes to be achieved. The use of orthotics that were made from EVA and in accordance with recent podiatric research proved beneficial in helping to address underlying biomechanical issues. Conclusion: The findings presented a more detailed analysis of lower limb biomechanical issues among cabin crew and how such issues could have wider implications for the occupational role of the sample group. Consideration to podiatric issues among aviation staff, as a whole, should not be overlooked. Given the incidence of lower limb issues among the sample group, future rehabilitation and prevention strategies would clearly benefit from the specialist insights of an aviation podiatrist contributing as part of a multi-disciplinary aeromedical team.

Foreign body retention in the neck may be either traumatic or iatrogenic. Penetrating neck injuries with retained bodies are critical, as the neck serves as a passage for structures essential to life. Therefore, prompt detection and retrieval of the foreign body are paramount in preventing mortality. Here, authors present a case in which a successful surgical retrieval was performed without any postprocedural complications, despite the patient presenting relatively late after the injury. In this case report, a 23-year-old male labourer presented with a right-sided neck swelling two months after a workplace injury involving a shattered metal plate. Imaging confirmed a 15×5 mm hyperdense metallic object penetrating the sternocleidomastoid muscle. Successful open exploration extracted a 1.5 cm metallic shard at the C6 vertebral level, with no major vessel or airway damage. Postoperatively, the patient exhibited no movement restrictions, highlighting the atypical presentation of a retained metallic foreign body and the importance of timely intervention and comprehensive imaging for successful management.

By designing protection measures, the occupational safety system should provide the best possible working conditions for all employees in every economic activity, including in mining production. The analysis of occupational injuries in a certain period of time should enable the collection of data on certain etiological specificities of injuries and in this way ensure the selection of adequate preventive measures of occupational safety. Monitoring the indicators of occupational injuries within the analysis, which is presented in this paper, provides information about the change in the state of working conditions and enables the determination of the general tendency of its decreasing or increasing change. One-factor ANOVA analysis was applied to determine the variability of the results within the established groups of selected etiological factors and to determine the impact on the observed occurrence of the number of occupational injuries in the mining company. The application of Pareto analysis to determine the most dominant causes of occupational injuries is of crucial importance for determining the direction of action of preventive actions and corrective measures in the occupational safety system. The influence of load carriage in operational police officers is not well understood despite a relatively high injury rate. Assessing load related changes in head and torso coordination may provide valuable insight into plausible injury mechanisms. Do typical police tactical vest loads alter head and torso coordination during running? Thirty-eight UK police officers ran at a self-selected pace (>2 ms−1) on a non-motorised treadmill in four vest load conditions (unloaded, and low, high and evenly distributed loads). Peak head and torso tilt, and peak vest displacement were compared between all four conditions. Timings between vest and torso change of direction were compared between the three loaded conditions. The coupling angle between the head and torso calculated using modified vector coding were compared between unloaded and each loaded conditions using Statistical Parametric Mapping. No significant differences were found between conditions for peak head or torso tilt alone (p > 0.05). Loading equipment low on the vest led to significantly greater mediolateral vest displacements (38 mm) away from the torso than a high (34 mm) or evenly distributed (30 mm) conditions. The vest was found to change direction vertically before the torso in the anterior-posterior direction, and then influence torso motion. The loaded conditions changed the head-torso coupling from in-phase (with head-dominancy) to anti-phase (with torso dominancy) between 55% and 77% stance. Anti-phase with a relatively stationary head and the torso rotating forward likely places a greater concentric demand on the posterior neck muscles relative to unloaded running. A musculoskeletal disorder (MSD) of pain, weakness, numbness, or paresthesia is a common issue for dental health care providers. The aims of this study were to (1) identify the prevalence of MSDs among endodontists in the United States, (2) to identify risk factors of MSDs among United States endodontists, and (3) to compare these findings with other published findings for dental providers. A 24-question survey regarding the demographics, potential risk factors, and prevalence of MSDs was formulated and distributed to 5394 members of the American Association of Endodontists. Data were then analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square analysis to find significance at α = 0.05. Six hundred twenty participants responded to the survey for an overall response rate of 12%. Of the submitted surveys, 527 of them confirmed to be endodontists practicing in the United States, and all results were derived from those 527 surveys. Seventy-four percent of respondents reported having experienced MSDs in the last 12 months, and 88% reported having experienced at least 1 MSD thus far during their career. Eighty-five percent of female participants reported an MSD within the past 12 months compared with 70% of males. MSDs have a high prevalence among endodontists in the United States. The neck and lower back were the areas of highest MSD prevalence. Slips, trips, and falls (STFs) represent a main source of injury among farm workers. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between farm operations and STFs among corn farm workers. We conducted a cross-sectional study using a self-administered questionnaire among corn farm workers in Nan and Saraburi provinces, Thailand from July 5 to 23, 2022. Poisson regression analysis was used. Among 338 participants, 122 (36.1%) had experienced an STF in the previous 6 months. Conducting very frequent, frequent, or occasional pest management was associated with a higher incidence rate ratio (IRR) of STFs than never or rarely pest management (adjusted IRR 1.93, 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.23 to 3.04, p=0.004). People with marginal or unsatisfactory work break lengths had a higher incidence rate of STFs than those with satisfactory work breaks (adjusted IRR 1.40, 95% CI=1.03 to 1.89, p=0.030). We found that corn farm workers in our study often experienced STFs, which was associated with a high frequency of pest management practices and inadequate work breaks. BACKGROUND: Playing the violin often requires a rotated and lateral flexed neck, leading to potential neck and shoulder problems. An ergonomic chinrest (EC) with or without a shoulder rest (SR or WSR) may enhance neutral neck positioning, but the feasibility of the EC needs to be studied. OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to evaluate the usability of the EC for a two-week familiarisation period, including aspects such as playing performance, comfort level, and emotional response (e.g., feelings about using the product) among a group of violinists. METHODS: A one-arm feasibility study was conducted to assess the feasibility of violinists playing with EC every day for two weeks. Six violinists who usually played with SR were included and asked to divide their daily playing time equally between SR and WSR. Feasibility outcomes were measured as adherence (days), compliance (playing hours per day) and usability (5-point Likert scale and open-ended questions). Compliance was achieved with a minimum of 25% playing time. RESULTS: Daily violin playing with EC showed high adherence of 89.3%. Compliance with the 25% play time criterion was met for SR, but not for WSR. Low playing performance (median 45.8 points difference), long confidence time (two violinists failed to reach a confidence level) and mainly negative feedback (26 out of 33 comments) were found in WSR compared to SR. CONCLUSIONS: The feasibility of playing WSR was low and negatively impacted playing performance. As a result, a larger-scale study will only evaluate the EC with SR due to greater feasibility. Background: Occupational injuries (OI) are a - significant source of social and economic costs. They can cause prolonged absences from work, loss of limb, and worker disability, among other negative consequences. In light of this, the present study aimed to evaluate the factors associated with OI in trauma centers affiliated with Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. Methods: This cross-sectional study was carried out among patients admitted to the trauma ward of four teaching hospitals in Mashhad during 2019-2020. Patients' data was collected in a checklist and trauma severity was assessed based on injury severity score. The Epworth questionnaire was completed for patients. Data was analyzed by SPSS 20.0. Results: Out of a total of 13660 patients who were referred to the emergency department of four hospitals of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences, 683 (5.15%) individuals suffered occupational trauma and entered the study. The mean (±SD) age and work experience of the participants were 34 (±10) and 10 (±9) respectively. Most of the participants were in the age group of 20-40 years. the most common mechanism of trauma was falling (p=0.00) and the most injury frequency was among manual working (p=0.01). There was not a significant association between trauma severity and demographic characteristics. Those who had falling or electric accidents had more severe trauma compared to other injured patients. (p=0.00). Conclusion: In general, the most burden of occupational accidents and in fact, the most serious injuries were related to men and manual workers. Work accidents are of great concern to society because they directly affect the health and life of workers and the production process of the enterprise, as well as creating significant social and economic costs for workers, employers, the country's economy and society. In this study, the total of 1.048 occupational injury cases who applied to Emergency Department of Cumhuriyet University Faculty of Medicine between 2011-2015 was evaluated. In this study; frequency, chi-square and percentage tests were used in the analysis of data. 1.034 (98.7%) of the cases was male and the rest was female. The cases were more often between the ages of 25-34 (36.2%). 64.2% of applications to emergency were occured between 08:01-17:00. The accidents were more often at metal/machine industry (20.8%). It was seen that it was not mentioned whether the injuries could be resolved with simple medical intervention in 84.4% of the reports. There wasn’t an alcohol evaluation at most (92%) of the cases. Most of the injuries were located at upper extremity (39.6%). The most observed lesion was soft tissue damage (35.3%). 624 of the cases (59.6%) were discharged after treatment in emergency department. It was determined that the number of cases applied to the Department of Forensic Medicine by the prosecutor's office or court decision after occupational accident was 29 (2.8%); in 79.3% of cases, the injuries could be resolved with simple medical intervention; in 24.1%, there was life-threatening; in 3.4%, there was declining function; in 6.9%, there was loss of function. Inadequacies in the writing of forensic reports will cause serious legal problems. In addition, it was concluded that it is important to raise awareness for all healthcare personnel, especially emergency physicians, and to provide up-to-date training for forensic case reporting and proper-complete preparation of forensic reports. Purpose: This quality improvement project had three aims: to identify common assisted falls scenarios, describe staff members’ experiences with and risk perceptions of such falls, and explore factors that influenced their perceptions. The overarching goal was to gain useful insight for the development of assisted fall– related strategies and policies. Methods:In the fall of 2020, 16 staff members from 13 health care facilities were purposively recruited and interviewed. Transcript summaries of these interviews, along with secondary narrative data from employee and patient injury databases, were analyzed using thematic content analysis. Results:According to staff members’ accounts, assisted falls most commonly took place in patient rooms or bathrooms when patients were ambulating or transferring. The interviewees described assisting falls by grabbing or holding the patient or by using their own body to brace or steady the patient. Interview and secondary narrative data noted various injuries that occurred during assisted fall events. These injuries most often involved the lower back (among staff) and the legs (among patients). Most interviewees perceived that using proper body mechanics would prevent injury. Conclusions: Interviewees’ experiences with assisted falls indicate areas of improvement for fall preven)tion. The perception that using proper body mechanics will protect staff from injury may be a misconception. Although the literature reports mixed findings concerning whether staff should assist patient falls, this project’s results led us to conclude that there is no safe way to physically assist a falling patient without risk of staff injury. Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic greatly affected healthcare workers, both physically and psychologically, by increasing their workload and stress. This may also have increased their risk of occupational injuries. This study analyzed workers' compensation (WC) claims among California nursing care facility workers during 2019–2021, to assess the impact of the pandemic on occupational injury risk. Methods: This study used data from the California Workers' Compensation Information System. WC claims in prepandemic and pandemic periods were described and compared between nursing care facilities and other settings. Nursing facility cases were described by demographic, job, and injury characteristics. Results: In 2019–2021, we identified 41,134 claims as nursing facility cases in California. Annual claims increased by 64.6% from 2019 to 2020 and then decreased in 2021, returning to levels similar to pre‐COVID. In contrast, non‐healthcare settings had decreases in claims during the pandemic. COVID‐related claims accounted for 50.5% of claims in nursing facilities in 2020–2021; this proportion was much higher compared with other healthcare (35.7%) or nonhealthcare settings (14.3%). Non‐COVID claims decreased during the pandemic but mental disorder or stress claims increased in nursing facilities, particularly in 2020 (+42.5%). Conclusions: Our findings show that nursing care facilities were more severely affected by the pandemic than other settings. We did not find evidence of an increased risk of occupational injuries during the pandemic, except for increased claims for stress or mental disorders. Background and Objectives: Needle stick injury (NSI) is the most dreaded occupational health hazard affecting a healthcare worker (HCW) psychologically and physically. The risk of infection post needle stick injury ranges between 1.9% to greater than 40% for HBV infections, 2.7-10% for HCV and 0.2-0.44% for HIV infections. As per National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) records, nursing staff is at highest risk (43%) followed by physicians (28%). The main objective of this study was to evaluate knowledge of nursing staff about needle stick injuries and to study factors leading to such incidents in their working areas, impart them knowledge regarding the same and fill gaps in knowledge. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional retrospective analysis involving nursing staff and students. p values were calculated using SPSS software. Results: Overall NSI prevalence among nursing staff and students was 51.6% whereas in more exposed and less exposed group was 47.45% and 10.16% respectively (p=0.2056). The most common cause of NSI incident was recapping of needle (38.5%) followed by transferring needle to sharp container (35%). Conclusion: Consequences of NSI are serious and this study has tried to emphasize on the need to study the factors leading to NSI.

IntroductionOccupational health disparities are well documented among immigrant populations and occupational injury remains a high cause of morbidity and mortality among immigrant populations. There are several factors that contribute to the high prevalence of work-related injury among this population and those without legal status are more likely to experience abusive labor practices that can lead to injury. While the work-related injuries and experiences of Spanish-speaking workers have been explored previously, there is a paucity of literature documenting injury among hospitalized patients. Additionally, there are few documented hospital-based occupational injury prevention programs and no programs that implement workers rights information. The purpose of this study was to further explore the context of work related injuries primarily experienced by Spanish speaking patients and knowledge of their rights in the workplace.MethodsThis was a semi-structured qualitative interview study with Spanish speaking patients admitted to the hospital for work related injuries. The study team member conducting interviews was bilingual and trained in qualitative methodology. An interview guide was utilized for all interviews and was developed with an immigrant workers rights organization and study team expertise, and factors documented in the literature. Participants were asked about the type and context of the injury sustained, access and perceptions of workplace safety, and knowledge of participants rights as workers. All interviews were conducted in Spanish, recorded, transcribed in Spanish and then translated into English. A codebook was developed and refined iteratively and two independent coders coded all English transcripts using Dedoose. Interviews were conducted until thematic saturation was reached and data was analyzed using a thematic analysis approach.ResultsA total of eight interviews were completed. All participants reported working in hazardous conditions that resulted in an injury. Participants expressed a relative acceptance that their workplace environment was dangerous and acknowledged that injuries were common, essentially normalizing the risk of injury. There were varying reports of access to and utilization of safety information and equipment and employer engagement in safety was perceived as a facilitator to safety. Most participants did have some familiarity with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) inspections but were not as familiar with OSHA procedures and their rights as workers.DiscussionWe identified several themes related to workplace injury among Spanish speaking patients, many of which raise concerns about access to workplace safety, re-injury and long-term recovery. The context around immigration is particularly important to consider and may lead to unique risk factors for injury, recovery, and re-injury both in the workplace and beyond the workplace, suggesting that perhaps immigration status alone may serve as a predisposition to injury. Thus, it is critical to understand the context around work related injuries in this population considering the tremendous impact of employment on one’s health and financial stability. Further research on this topic is warranted, specifically the exploration of multiple intersecting layers of exposure to injury among immigrant populations. Future work should focus on hospital-based strategies for injury prevention and know your rights education tailored to Spanish speaking populations.

Background This study introduced a novel approach for predicting occupational injury severity by leveraging deep learning-based text classification techniques to analyze unstructured narratives. Unlike conventional methods that rely on structured data, our approach recognizes the richness of information within injury narrative descriptions with the aim of extracting valuable insights for improved occupational injury severity assessment. Methods Natural language processing (NLP) techniques were harnessed to preprocess the occupational injury narratives obtained from the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) from January 2015 to June 2023. The methodology involved meticulous preprocessing of textual narratives to standardize text and eliminate noise, followed by the innovative integration of Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency (TF-IDF) and Global Vector (GloVe) word embeddings for effective text representation. The proposed predictive model adopts a novel Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (Bi-LSTM) architecture and is further refined through model optimization, including random search hyperparameters and in-depth feature importance analysis. The optimized Bi-LSTM model has been compared and validated against other machine learning classifiers which are naïve Bayes, support vector machine, random forest, decision trees, and K-nearest neighbor. Results The proposed optimized Bi-LSTM models’ superior predictability, boasted an accuracy of 0.95 for hospitalization and 0.98 for amputation cases with faster model processing times. Interestingly, the feature importance analysis revealed predictive keywords related to the causal factors of occupational injuries thereby providing valuable insights to enhance model interpretability. Conclusion Our proposed optimized Bi-LSTM model offers safety and health practitioners an effective tool to empower workplace safety proactive measures, thereby contributing to business productivity and sustainability. This study lays the foundation for further exploration of predictive analytics in the occupational safety and health domain.

BackgroundOccupational injuries are one of the leading causes of death or disability in occupational populations. According to the World Health Organization and the International Labour Organization, occupational injuries were the occupational contributor responsible for the largest loss of disability-adjusted life years (DALY) globally in 2016. ObjectiveTo analyze the burden of deaths attributed to occupational injuries in Chinese population from 1990 to 2019, and provide a reference for further construction of occupational injury surveillance system. MethodsUsing the results and data of the Global Burden of Disease 2019 (GBD 2019), this study estimated the burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries by year, sex, and age groups, and the indicators included deaths, years of life lost (YLL), mortality, and YLL rates. Age-standardized rates of deaths and YLL rates were calculated using a world standard population presented by GBD 2019. Annualized rate of change (ARC) was use to evaluate changes in the indicators over time. All results were presented as point estimates with 95% uncertainty intervals (95%UI). ResultsIn 2019, the deaths attributable to occupational injuries among women in China accounted for 33.16% of that among world's women, their YLL accounted for 31.88%, and the two indicators among Chinese men accounted for 17.98% and 17.09%, respectively. Compared with 1990, the standardized mortality rate and the standardized YLL rate attributable to occupational injuries in China in 2019 decreased, among which the ARCs of the standardized mortality rate in the whole population, men, and women were −0.68 (95%UI: −0.78, −0.51), −0.68 (95%UI: −0.80, −0.47), and −0.68 (95%UI: −0.82, −0.46), respectively. The ARCs of the standardized YLL rate in the whole population, men, and women were −0.68 (95%UI: −0.78, −0.51), −0.67 (95%UI: −0.80, −0.48), and −0.68 (95%UI: −0.81, −0.44), respectively. Absolute values of the ARCs of the standardized mortality rate and the standardized YLL rate attributable to occupational injuries from 1990 to 2010 were higher than those from 2010 to 2019. The ARCs of the standardized YLL rate for road injuries, falls, and drowning from 1990 to 2010 were −0.55 (95%UI: −0.67, −0.36), −0.57 (95%UI: −0.73, −0.38), −0.77 (95%UI: −0.84, −0.63), and the ARCs from 2010 to 2019 were −0.27 (95%UI: −0.46, −0.02), −0.07 (95%UI: −0.34, −0.26), −0.06 (95%UI: −0.32, −0.29), respectively. In 2019, the standardized mortality rate attributable to occupational injuries among Chinese men was 5.68/100000 (95%UI: 3.89/100000, 8.23/100000), and the standardized YLL rate was 286.27/100000 (95%UI: 197.58/100000, 411.38/100000); the standardized mortality rate attributable to occupational injuries among Chinese women was 1.55/100000 (95%UI: 0.99/100000, 2.36/100000), and the standardized YLL rate was 80.85/100000 (95%UI: 51.61/100000, 122.07/100000). ConclusionFrom 1990 to 2019, the burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries in China is declined, but the rate of decline is slowed down in the last decade. The burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries among women in China still accounts for a high proportion of the global burden among women. The burden of deaths attributable to occupational injuries among Chinese men is higher than that among Chinese women.

BackgroundFalls are one of the most important types of occupational injuries. The incidence of falls is high in manufacturing workers. However, most of the studies on falls in China focus on primary and secondary school students and the elderly, and there are few studies on falls in the occupational population. ObjectiveTo evaluate efficiency of Bayesian network model in predicting fall injury risks in manufacturing enterprise staff, and impacts from work content, work environment, enterprise status, and health management on falls and their mutual relationships, and provide a scientific basis for enterprises to carry out fall-associated injury intervention. MethodsData from the European Survey of Enterprises on New and Emerging Risks (ESENER) were used. The survey provided data on work content, working environment, enterprise status, and health management of enterprises in European countries. The outcome indicator, was fall injury risks reported in enterprises. A total of 23 potential impact factors covering work content, working environment, enterprise status, and health management were screened by least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression, followed by Bayesian network model for structure learning and parameter learning and area under the curve (AUC) for model fitness evaluation, using R and Netica 5.18. Diagnostic inference analysis was also conducted to identify key influencing factors and key influencing chains of fall injury risks based on the change rate of fall injury risks. ResultsIn 5997 enterprises surveyed, 2573 (42.9%) enterprises reported fall injury risks. Ordered by their coefficient estimates from high to low, the 14 variables (mean-squared error=0.20) selected by LASSO regression were: manual handling, repetitive arm movement, poor posture, using desktop computers, and using robots in the category of work content; abnormal temperature and noise in the category of working environment; company size and employee quality in the category of enterprise status; mental health training, regular risk assessment, availability of psychologists, health and safety procedures, and provision of psychological counseling in the category of health management. The fitting result of Bayesian network model for fall injury risks was good (AUC=0.779). The Bayesian network diagnostic inference identified five key influencing factors, including abnormal temperature (change rate=35.9%), poor posture (change rate=27.3%), noise (change rate=23.4%), manual handling (change rate=18.2%), and repetitive arm movement (change rate=5.1%). The key influencing chain was "manual handling - poor posture - repetitive arm movement - fall injury risks" (combined change rate=16.9%). ConclusionThe Bayesian network model has a good predictive performance in predicting the risk of falls in manufacturing enterprises. Manufacturing enterprises need to focus on jobs involving manual handling and repetitive arm movement, identify and improve workers' poor posture and mental health problems, and avoid workers working in harsh temperature or noise environment.

Globally, manufacturing workers are one of the most vulnerable groups to occupational injuries. Occupational injuries can lead to absenteeism, disability or even death, and most of the inflicted workers involve young adults aged 18-40 years, suggesting a safety and health problem that needs close attention. In the working environment of manufacturing industry, there are a variety of occupational injury risk factors, involving individuals, equipment, environment, and management, which should be considered comprehensively. This study found comprehensive research coverage on the influencing factors of occupational injuries in manufacturing industry at individual, environmental, and management levels at home and abroad, and rich research results on the impacts of psychological factors on occupational injuries. However, factors associated with occupational injuries in equipment safety and engineering like man-machine environment need further research. Influencing factors at all levels should be comprehensively considered in the surveillance and intervention of occupational injuries in manufacturing industry to protect health and safety of workers.
