Introduction Surveys conducted in the 1980's showed that the prevalence of non-insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) was 5-10% among Danes over 50 years of age (Damsgaard et al, 1987, Schroll [...], Objective: To investigate the association between consumption of certain foods and macronutrients and urinary glucose excretion, which is a predictor of non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Design: A cross-sectional study, Denmark, 1993-97. Subjects: Participants in the Danish study 'Diet, Cancer and Health'. After exclusion of persons with postprandial urine samples and persons with diabetes or other diseases potentially resulting in glycosuria, the study population included 14 743 men and 18 064 women aged 50-64 y. We identified 183 men and 43 women with glucose in their urine. Results: Consumption of poultry was negatively associated with glycosuria in both men (odds ratio, OR = 0.87; 95% confidence interval, 95% CI=0.77-0.98) and women (OR=0.69; 0.48-1.00). Fiber from fruit showed a weak negative association with glycosuria in both men (0.95; 0.90-1.01) and women (0.89; 0.78-1.02), whereas a significant negative association with total fiber (0.68; 0.51-0.91) and fiber from vegetables (0.94; 0.88-0.99) was seen in men. Intake of fish tended to reduce the risk of glycosuria in women only (0.80; 0.63-1.02), whereas ingestion of milk products increased their risk significantly (1.15; 1.06-1.24). Conclusion: Although statistical significance and consistency in the two sexes were not achieved for all endpoints, the study indicates a protective effect of dietary products like poultry, fruit and cereals against glycosuria and suggests a promoting effect of milk. To investigate whether parents of children with congenital malformations more often developed cancer after birth of the child, a population-based case-control study in Denmark was undertaken. By linking the Cancer Registry with the Central Population Registry, we identified 8783 cancer patients having their first child born between 1977 and 1995 before the cancer was diagnosed. Parents of 41 206 firstborn children of a 10% random sample of newborns from the Birth Registry between 1980 and 1995 were identified as controls. We obtained malformation diagnoses of children of cases and controls by linking to the Hospital Discharge Registry. We estimated the association between malformation and cancer by using logistic regression, adjusting for maternal age at birth and sex of child. We found no increased risk of cancer in parents having children with malformations in general, but a higher cancer risk in parents of children born with cleft lip/palate, odds ratio (OR) for all cancer=1.8 (95% confidence interval 1.0-3.2), OR for lymphomas=4.2 (1.3-13.5) and OR for leukaemia=8.1 (2.0-33.7). This association was not restricted to cancer cases diagnosed shortly after birth of the child. In this retrospective, nation-wide cohort study, the risk of cancer was assessed for 1738 Danish patients with psoriasis subjected to climatotherapy at the Dead Sea during 1972–93, by linkage to the Danish Cancer Registry. The overall risk of cancer in patients treated at the Dead Sea (standardized incidence ratio, SIR = 1·59) was higher than that expected in the general population, owing to an excess risk of non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC) [SIR = 4·2 for basal cell carcinoma (BCC) and 10·7 for squamous cell carcinoma (SCC)]. In addition, the distribution of NMSC among body sites, age groups and sexes was unusual in those treated at the Dead Sea, favouring NMSC in young individuals and at multiple sites (SIR = 10·7 for BCC and 57·2 for SCC), multiple BCCs being particularly common among young women. Thus, people subjected to climatotherapy at the Dead Sea for psoriasis constitute a high-risk group for NMSC, SCC in particular, but not for malignant diseases in general. The study design precludes conclusions on whether climatotherapy plays a specific part in skin carcinogenesis which is different from other sources of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, as climatotherapy is inevitably confounded by excess UV exposure. Recently a four-fold increase in the risk of malignant melanoma of the eye was associated with the use of radiofrequency transmitting devices, including mobile phones in Germany. We contrasted the incidence rates of this rare cancer with the number of mobile phone subscribers in Denmark. We observed no increasing trend in the incidence rate of melanoma, which was in sharp contrast to the exponentially increasing number of mobile phone subscribers starting in the early 1980s.
