1. Intermediate-temperature proton conductivity of Li+/H+ ion-exchanged material (Li,H)3.5Zn0.25GeO4.

Abstract

For decades, much effort has been devoted to developing proton conductors applicable to electrochemical devices at intermediate temperatures. However, promising materials that possess sufficient conductivity have not been realized yet. This study demonstrates the development of novel proton conductors that are operative at intermediate temperatures, especially 300–400 °C, through the simple ion-exchange method. The Li+/H+ ion-exchange process was conducted for Li14Zn(GeO4)4, one of the members of lithium super ionic conductors (LISICONs), in non-aqueous solutions. The chemical formula of the resultant sample was determined as Li3.13H0.37Zn0.25GeO4 from instrumental analyses. The electrical conductivity of this material was evaluated to be 87.0 mS cm−1, 39.0 mS cm−1, and 5.5 mS cm−1 at 400 °C, 300 °C, and 200 °C, respectively, in 10% H2O–90% N2. Furthermore, the main charge carrier in this electrolyte was identified as a proton from the H/D isotopic exchange study. Abstract

The concern with renewable energy has been growing. Large-scale installation of photovoltaic (PV) generation and electricity storage is expected to be installed into the power system in Japan. In this situation, we need to keep supply-demand balance by systematically using not only traditional power generation systems but also the PV generation and storage equipment. Towards this balancing, a number of prediction methods for PV generation and demand have been developed in literature. However, prediction-based balancing is not necessarily easy. This is because the prediction of PV generation and the demand forecasting inevitably includes some uncertainty. Against this background, we formulate a problem to plan battery charge pattern while minimizing the fuel cost of generators with explicit consideration of prediction uncertainty. In this problem, given as interval quadratic programming, the prediction uncertainty is described as a parameter in constraint condition. Furthermore, we propose a method to find a solution to this problem from the viewpoint of monotonicity analysis. Finally, by numerical analysis based on this problem and its solution method, we discuss the relation between the minimal regulating capacity and the required battery charge/discharge pattern to tolerate a given amount of prediction uncertainty.

10. Minimizing mismatch loss in BIPV system by reconnection.

Abstract

Recently, building-integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems have become increasingly popular because they provide increased available space and have great environmental appeal. However, these systems may be adversely affected by shadows of surrounding buildings. In order to reduce the effect of shadows on solar panels, we propose the concept of a PV system with reconnection (smart PV), where PV arrays can be reconnected to minimize the mismatch loss depending on the output of each module measured at regular time intervals. In this study, the effects of minimizing the mismatch loss of a BIPV system by reconnection are evaluated by studying shadow patterns. The PV system with reconnection showed good performance for typical shadow patterns. In the evaluation, the optimized connection is determined by calculating the outputs of several array connection patterns. To analyze the daily impact of the PV system with reconnection, the daily output energy by the BIPV system that is partially shaded by a neighboring building is considered as a case study. The maximum improvement in the daily mismatch loss with the reconnection was 8.1 kWh per day compared with that of conventional array connections. Abstract

This paper discusses the eigenvalue problem for the real symmetric matrix, especially the determination of the largest eigenvalue. The largest eigenvalue is the maximum extremum of the objective function called the Rayleigh quotient and can be determined by the steepest descent method. It is known, however, that the steepest descent method suffers from slow convergence because it converges linearly. Especially, when the largest and the nest largest eigenvalues have very close values, the convergence is particularly slow. This paper analyzes this situation and shows that the convergence can be accelerated by combining the steepest descent method with a technique called shaking. Finally, it is demonstrated by a numerical example that the convergence is accelerated drastically by the proposed technique. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

12. Paper analysis of reading and writing behaviors for digital contents.

Abstract

In this paper, we discuss the change of page number and image processing methods for discrimination between behaviors in reading contents and taking notes for contents on the display. First, scene images for contents can be recorded by a sunglasses-type camera. Next, a few features can be extracted based on color information from these images and the discrimination procedure can be executed by the discrimination analysis and the classification method by using multi-layered neural networks. Finally, we evaluate the discrimination precision and discuss the relations among page transition, behaviors by students and their notes. This electronic document is a “live” template.
