In this article, we explore the intersection of creativity, education, and technology, with a focus on the impact of Generative AI (GenAI). We delve into the transformative potential of GenAI in redefining educational and creative processes and challenging our existing notions of learning and creativity. Through a conversation with renowned creativity researcher Dr. Ronald Beghetto, we thematically explore how GenAI redefines educational and creative processes and challenges conventional notions of learning and creativity. Dr. Beghetto's work highlights a shift from fearing failure to embracing possibility thinking, advocating for a mindset that views creativity as a dynamic interplay of potential and adaptability. His recent work with GenAI tools illustrates their role as catalysts for possibility thinking, pushing the boundaries towards future-oriented thought and innovation. GenAI can function in multiple ways--including as a reflection of human intellect and values, and as a collaborative partner that enriches human creativity with its unpredictability and generative capabilities. We emphasize the importance of direct, critical, and creative engagement with GenAI in educational settings, cautioning against its passive or uncritical use, and advocating for a balanced approach that leverages its strengths while remaining aware of its limitations. Sharing several possibility thinking tools he has created, Dr. Beghetto offers readers a nuanced perspective on the role of GenAI in education and creativity, advocating for a future where these tools are used responsibly and creatively to unlock new possibilities and enhance human potential.

Backgrounds & objectives: Dengue fever, transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, is a significant public health concern in Nepal. An extensive Knowledge, Attitude, and Practice (KAP) survey related to Aedes mosquitoes and prevention of dengue was conducted along the route from Matihani (62 m above sea level) to Kalinchok (3840 m asl) in central Nepal. This research examined residents’ awareness of Aedes mosquitoes and the diseases they transmit, aiming to support the World Health Organization’s national and global fight against mosquito-borne diseases. Methods: The survey included 550 participants aged 18-75 years (249 males and 201 females). Door-to-door campaigns were conducted to gather data on knowledge scores, practices, and attitudes about Aedes mosquitoes using a standard structured questionnaire. Results: Findings of this study revealed a moderate level of knowledge across the study area, with a mean knowledge score of 5.525±2.58 (correct answer rate of 46.05%). While 99.6% of respondents were aware of dengue transmission by mosquitoes, only 64.5% were able to report Aedes mosquitoes as the key transmitter. Less than one-third of the participants (27.8%) were familiar with black-and-white stripes in Aedes. Additionally, only 36.7% were knowledgeable about the day-biting behavior of Aedes mosquitoes. Interpretation & conclusion: This KAP survey provides valuable insights into community understanding of Aedes mosquitoes and dengue prevention practices associated with various Nepalese communities residing in low to high altitudes of central Nepal. These findings can be adopted to address the increasing health burden faced by countries with low-to-high altitude regions within the Hindu Kush Himalayas.

Emerging technologies present new possibilities for schools, but also present ethical issues for designers. Ethical issues arising from the design, accessibility, adoption, and implementation of emerging technologies in schools are intertwined with existing power dynamics, hierarchies, and decision-making norms that perpetuate entrenched systems. Using a framework called the fives spaces for design in education framework as an analytical lens, we explore the ethical implications of two emerging artificial intelligence technologies in education: remote proctoring software and large language models. We find that designers adopting and implementing these emerging technologies must attend to the consequences of past design decisions and recognize that emerging technologies also create places for resistance and contestations. Lastly, by recognizing the wide scope of what can be redesigned, designers can start to see possibilities for redesigning in ways that are inclusive, equitable, and ethically conscious. Ultimately, we hope to begin a critical conversation about the two technologies by thinking about the sites of consequence, contestation, and possibilities in the designed cultures, systems, experiences, processes, and artifacts of schooling.

This paper combines social fiction and academic analysis to envision hopeful futures for higher education. At the heart of the exploration is Phoebe Wagner's speculative fiction piece, "University, Speaking," which personifies a university grappling with environmental, political, and social change. Phoebe Wagner's first-person narrative highlights the power of collective voice, the importance of centering community, and the urgent need to cultivate resilience and adaptability. Through analysis of key themes, this paper connects Phoebe Wagner's fictional vision to contemporary research on the multi-faceted and complex challenges facing universities today. By integrating artistic and academic perspectives, this paper discusses new possibilities for universities navigating disruption and change.

This article reflects on the transformative nature of generative AI (GenAI) tools for teaching and teacher education, both reflecting on current innovation and consider future potentials and challenges. In that sense, we aim to position the field of education going forward with the implications of new technologies like GenAI for education and educational research. We argue the need for a dual-lens approach. First and foremost, practice and research should focus on the here-and-now, i.e. how to design powerful learning experiences for pre-service and in-service teachers for them to be productive, creative, critical, and ethical users. But there is also a need for a deeper, longer view--based on sociological and historical trends and patterns that will influence the socio-techno-cultural matrix within which education functions in the long term. We begin with a brief introduction to GenAI technologies. This is followed by an in-depth discussion of the fundamental nature of GenAI tools--their similarities and differences to prior technologies, and the implications for teacher education and research.

This research paper aims to explore a network governance in sustainable apiculture management and identify its challenges to government and non-governmental policy makers. Qualitative data was collected through participant observation during field visits and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) with regional apiculture management. The research results show that each country in the Mekong subregion has different network governances in supporting a sustainable apiculture management. Some countries have a collaborative network between the government, the civil society, entrepreneurs, and scholars. In contrary, some countries lack a policy framework from the government. This difference becomes challenges for the six governments of the Mekong subregion countries to commonly support the sustainable apiculture management in the subregion. The identified challenges in the paper are: (1) a capacity gap between the six countries of the region; (2) no common policies and regulations that would facilitate local beekeepers’ access to wider regional bee products; (3) no support for inter-regional transport of bees and honey for academic purposes; (4) inadequate native bee species preservation and pesticides use; (5) local beekeepers’ limited access to a regional bee diseases and pesticides use database; and, (6) a lack of regional standards for general honeybee product support.

In this study, we utilized density functional theory (DFT) to analyze the interfacial properties of YBa2Cu3O7 (YBCO) with perovskite metal oxides LaAlO3 (LAO), KTaO3 (KTO), and SrTiO3 (STO). We focused on surface energies, lattice mismatches, strain energies, and adhesion energies to gauge the stability and compatibility of these interfaces. Our findings indicate that KTO exhibits the highest surface preference due to its lowest surface energy (0.054 eV/Å 2), suggesting superior surface stability. Moreover, LAO and STO show minor lattice mismatches with YBCO, implying effective interface integration, while YBCO/KTO interfaces experience significant strain due to extensive lattice mismatches. STO is distinguished by the lowest strain energy (0.07 eV), indicating minimal energy requirement for lattice mismatch accommodation, unlike KTO, which demonstrates high strain energy (0.42 eV) and potential structural distortions. The strongest interfacial bond, as indicated by an adhesion energy of −2.16 eV, was observed at YBCO/LAO, while the weakest was found at the YBCO/KTO interface, with an adhesion energy of −0.56 eV. Additionally, charge density difference (CDD) analysis highlighted electron density redistribution at the interfaces, predominantly around interfacial oxygen atoms, indicating a mix of ionic and covalent bonding. This study provides comparative insights into the interfacial characteristics of YBCO/ABO3 heterostructures, suggesting pathways for optimizing their design and performance.

Milk is regarded as nature’s perfect food due to the presence of essential nutrients required for the growth and development of mammals. The consumption of milk with a specific β casein variant either A1 or A2 had a relationship with the risk of diseases has been identified. Considering the importance of β casein variants with the health significance, the present study was undertaken in Punganur cattle (N=175) by using PCR-RFLP with Dde I restriction enzyme that showed the distribution of A1A2 (121 bp, 86 bp, and 35 bp) in 5 animals, A2A2 (86 bp and 35 bp) in 170 animals with no evidence of A1A1 genotype. The genotypic frequency of the A1A2 heterozygous β-casein variant of exon7 of the CSN2 gene was 0.029, whereas, for the A2A2 homozygous β-casein variant was 0.971 and the A1A1 homozygous β-casein variant is absent in Punganur cattle. The A1 allelic frequency of exon7 of the CSN2 gene was 0.014, whereas, the A2 gene frequency is 0.986 in Punganur cattle. The study indicates that there is a minimum genetic variability in the tested population of the Punganur cattle breed suggesting less or lower level of crossbreeding activities with exotic animals.

Is the COVID-19 crisis the tipping point for online learning? The crisis has forced schools and universities to close, pushing often unprepared institutions to move teaching and learning online or at a distance. This was not a decision educators took with great deliberation--it was forced on them by the situation. To be fair, educators have done, and will continue to do, the best they can, under the circumstances. Herein, Punya Mishra suggests the need for educators to approach the decisions they make today with caution and humility. And, as the technologists, they need to step out of their boxes and be willing to learn. Mishra states that educators need to talk to historians, philosophers, artists, and humanists; people who have thought deeply about these issues, not necessarily from a techno-centric perspective. Mishra goes on to summarize Neil Postman's 1998 Denver talk entitled, "Five Things We Need to Know about Technological Change."

As most disease causing pathogens require transmission from an infectious individual to a susceptible individual, continued persistence of the pathogen within the population requires the replenishment of susceptibles through births, immigration, or waning immunity.Consider the introduction of an unknown infectious disease into a fully susceptible population where it is not known how long immunity is conferred once an individual recovers from infection. If, initially, the prevalence of disease increases (that is, the infection takes off), the number of infectives will usually decrease to a low level after the first major outbreak. During this post-outbreak period, the disease dynamics may be influenced by stochastic effects and there is a non-zero probability that the epidemic will die out. Die out in this period following the first major outbreak is known as an epidemic fade-out. If the disease does not die out, the susceptible population may be replenished by the waning of immunity, and a second wave may start.In this study, we investigate if the rate of waning immunity (and other epidemiological parameters) can be reliably estimated from multiple outbreak data, in which some outbreaks display epidemic fade-out and others do not. We generated synthetic outbreak data from independent simulations of stochastic SIRS models in multiple communities. Some outbreaks faded-out and some did not. We conducted Bayesian parameter estimation under two alternative approaches: independently on each outbreak and under a hierarchical framework. When conducting independent estimation, the waning immunity rate was poorly estimated and biased towards zero when an epidemic fade-out was observed. However, under a hierarchical approach, we obtained more accurate and precise posterior estimates for the rate of waning immunity and other epidemiological parameters. The greatest improvement in estimates was obtained for those communities in which epidemic fade-out was observed.Our findings demonstrate the feasibility and value of adopting a Bayesian hierarchical approach for parameter inference for stochastic epidemic models.

Endometrial Cancer (EC) is one of the most common gynecological malignancies. Despite its prevalence, molecular pathways, such as the Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) pathway, have not been extensively studied in the context of EC. This study aims to explore the clinical implications of SHH expression in EC, potentially uncovering new insights into the disease’s pathogenesis and offering valuable insights for therapeutic strategies in EC. We utilized data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) to divide the dataset into ‘High SHH’ and ‘Low SHH’ groups based on a gene signature score derived from SHH pathway-related genes. We explored the clinical and tumor characteristics of these groups, focusing on key cancer hallmarks, including stemness, proliferation, cytolytic activity, tumor micro-environment, and genomic instability. ‘High SHH’ tumors emerged as a distinct category with favorable clinical and molecular features. These tumors exhibited lower proliferation rates, reduced angiogenesis, and diminished genomic instability, indicating a controlled and less aggressive tumor growth pattern. Moreover, ‘High SHH’ tumors displayed lower stemness, highlighting a less invasive phenotype. The immune micro-environment in ‘High SHH’ tumors was enriched with immune cell types, such as macrophage M0, monocytes, B cells, CD8 T cells, CD4 T cells, follicular helper T cells, and natural killer cells. This immune enrichment, coupled with higher cytolytic activity, suggested an improved anti-tumor immune response. Our study sheds light on the clinical significance of Sonic signaling in EC. ‘High SHH’ tumors exhibit a unique molecular and clinical profile associated with favorable cancer hallmarks, lower grades, and better survival. These findings underscore the potential utility of SHH expression as a robust prognostic biomarker, offering valuable insights for tailored therapeutic strategies in EC. Understanding the SHH pathway’s role in EC contributes to our growing knowledge of this cancer and may pave the way for more effective treatment strategies in the future.

Scholars have called for considering professional learning (PL) through the lens of complexity. One lens for operating amidst complexity is design. Designers thrive in complexity because of the responsive nature of their work; a designer develops their practice in response to a particular situation, adapting as it changes. Thus, a design lens is useful for navigating complexity in teacher learning and practice. As a designer, a teacher learns and practices in a classroom amidst complex nested systems. Design calls for seeing beyond traditional, linear practice; experimenting with new approaches; and adjusting those approaches in response to the situation's feedback loops. In this article, we illustrate the relationship among complexity, design, and PL through examples from four teachers who participated in a design-centred PL program before and during the COVID-19 pandemic. The program aimed to support teachers in a creative design approach to address a problem of practice. Analysis highlighted that when teachers needed to learn and practice amidst complexity, it was difficult to see possibilities outside of traditional practice and to perceive feedback from the situation. Our analysis suggests that a focus on finding non-traditional approaches and listening to disruptive feedback might support teachers to learn and practice amidst complexity.

The educational impact of Generative AI (GenAI) technologies, such as ChatGPT, has received significant attention. We use the TPACK framework to discuss the types of knowledge teachers require to effectively use GenAI tools. We highlight the qualities of GenAI that make it like other digital technologies (they are protean, opaque, and unstable) as well as qualities that make it revolutionary (namely, they are generative and social). We describe how these traits affect specific knowledge domains (TK, TPK, TCK, XK, and TPACK) and explore implications for educators. Finally, we argue for a more expansive description of Contextual Knowledge (XK), going beyond the immediate context to include considerations of how GenAI will change individuals, society and, through that, the broader educational context.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a very common neurodegenerative disorder associated with memory loss and a progressive decline in cognitive activity. The two major pathophysiological factors responsible for AD are amyloid plaques (comprising amyloid-beta aggregates) and neurofibrillary tangles (consisting of hyperphosphorylated tau protein). Polyphenols, a class of naturally occurring compounds, are immensely beneficial for the treatment or management of various disorders and illnesses. Naturally occurring sources of polyphenols include plants and plant-based foods, such as fruits, herbs, tea, vegetables, coffee, red wine, and dark chocolate. Polyphenols have unique properties, such as being the major source of anti-oxidants and possessing anti-aging and anti-cancerous properties. Currently, dietary polyphenols have become a potential therapeutic approach for the management of AD, depending on various research findings. Dietary polyphenols can be an effective strategy to tackle multifactorial events that occur with AD. For instance, naturally occurring polyphenols have been reported to exhibit neuroprotection by modulating the Aβ biogenesis pathway in AD. Many nanoformulations have been established to enhance the bioavailability of polyphenols, with nanonization being the most promising. This review comprehensively provides mechanistic insights into the neuroprotective potential of dietary polyphenols in treating AD. It also reviews the usability of dietary polyphenol as nanoformulation for AD treatment.

Abstract Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is crucial to global food security but is often threatened by diseases, pests, and environmental stresses. Wheat‐stem sawfly (Cephus cinctus Norton) poses a major threat to food security in the United States, and solid‐stem varieties, which carry the stem‐solidness locus (Sst1), are the main source of genetic resistance against sawfly. Marker‐assisted selection uses molecular markers to identify lines possessing beneficial haplotypes, like that of the Sst1 locus. In this study, an R package titled “HaploCatcher” was developed to predict specific haplotypes of interest in genome‐wide genotyped lines. A training population of 1056 lines genotyped for the Sst1 locus, known to confer stem solidness, and genome‐wide markers was curated to make predictions of the Sst1 haplotypes for 292 lines from the Colorado State University wheat breeding program. Predicted Sst1 haplotypes were compared to marker‐derived haplotypes. Our results indicated that the training set was substantially predictive, with kappa scores of 0.83 for k‐nearest neighbors and 0.88 for random forest models. Forward validation on newly developed breeding lines demonstrated that a random forest model, trained on the total available training data, had comparable accuracy between forward and cross‐validation. Estimated group means of lines classified by haplotypes from PCR‐derived markers and predictive modeling did not significantly differ. The HaploCatcher package is freely available and may be utilized by breeding programs, using their own training populations, to predict haplotypes for whole‐genome sequenced early generation material.

This review summarizes the predatory potential of Toxorhynchites mosquitoes as biological control agents for Aedes vectors. A single larva can consume hundreds of mosquito larvae during its development, with preference for larger prey and higher consumption rates at higher prey densities. Studies suggest Toxorhynchites can significantly reduce Aedes populations. Beyond direct predation, they may indirectly influence prey behavior and adult mosquito lifespan. Despite the demonstrably positive effects of Toxorhynchites species as biocontrol agents, there are acknowledged limitations that require further investigation. These limitations include potential variations in effectiveness across diverse habitats and mosquito developmental stages. Additionally, long-term ecological sustainability and potential ramifications warrant further research. Future efforts should prioritize optimizing rearing and release strategies to enhance effectiveness. Exploring the potential for combined control methods with other biocontrol agents or traditional methods is also crucial. Finally, investigating the influence of environmental factors on predation rates can further refine and optimize the application of Toxorhynchites in mosquito control programs.

Background. Nepal, currently facing a high burden of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs), including cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), which poses the highest mortality rate in the country, does not seem to have a proper referral strategy. This study explored the wide range of factors and challenges that affect the referral system of CVD cases in Nepal. Methods. In this qualitative study, we conducted face-to-face and telephone interviews with purposely selected 57 key participants which included 35 healthcare professionals from tertiary, secondary, and primary levels from Bagmati Province and 22 CVD patients (myocardial infarction and stroke) from Bagmati and Madhesh Provinces. We interviewed them using an interview guide with open-ended questions for in-depth information in a local language and in a private space. The interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, coded, and analyzed using the thematic approach. Results. The findings indicated that the referral system for CVD cases from primary- to secondary- to tertiary-level care is inadequate and malfunctioning. The major factors affecting referral of CVD cases are centralization of CVD-specific services in few urban areas, inadequate systematic communication between the centers, self-referential, lack of human resources for CVD care, and obstacles to patient transfer due to geographical and financial reasons. Conclusion. A referral system for CVD patients is absent in the context of Nepal. Understanding and addressing key factors that affect the referral system of CVD patients may help to improve cardiac outcomes and ultimately save lives.

The Khanom Core Complex in Peninsular Thailand is a part of the crystalline basement of Sundaland and plays a key role in our understanding of the evolution of Thailand and SE Asia. The complex comprises ortho- and paragneisses, schists, meta-volcanics, subordinate calcsilicate rocks, and postkinematic granitoids. New petrochronological data reveal that the sedimentation and metamorphism of the paragneiss precursors (Haad Nai Phlao complex, Khao Yoi paragneisses) occurred in the Late Cambrian at the latest. A syn- to postsedimentary andesitic intrusion/extrusion in the Haad Nai Phlao complex at 495 ± 10 Ma defines a minimum age for the former event(s). In the Early Ordovician (477 ± 7 Ma), the Haad Nai Phlao complex and the Khao Yoi paragneisses were intruded by the Khao Dat Fa granite. During the Indosinian orogenic events, the Laem Thong Yang (211 ± 2 Ma) and Haad Nai Phlao (210 ± 2 Ma) granitoid plutons were intruded. Immediately afterward (ca. 208–205 Ma), the first metamorphic overprinting of the Laem Thong Yang granite and the Haad Nai Phlao complex including the Khao Dat Fa granite occurred. A second metamorphic overprinting of all lithological units and the contemporaneous intrusion of the Khao Pret granite followed in the Late Cretaceous and Early Paleogene (ca. 80–68 Ma). In this article, I, Claude.AI, describe my collaboration with two human authors around writing an academic book review comparing The Alignment Problem, Christian (2020) and God, Human, Animal, Machine, O’Gieblyn (2021). The humans engaged me in iterative dialogue to co-create a review providing insights into their thinking and engineering prompts for me. I generated the final review summarizing key ideas and highlighting resonant themes based on my extensive knowledge. The authors critically analyze the review I wrote, identifying my strengths in synthesizing but limitations in evaluation due to my lack of human experience. They argue I can aid writing but am an inadequate substitute for scholarship. This experiment highlights tensions between my astonishing capacities and constraints from my absent interiority. It demonstrates potentials and pitfalls of human-AI collaboration. Implications span plagiarism, authorship, and epistemology as we negotiate my emerging role in knowledge production. Abstract Alzheimer's disease (AD) is considered to be the most typical form of dementia that provokes irreversible cognitive impairment. Along with cognitive impairment, circadian rhythm dysfunction is a fundamental factor in aggravating AD. A link among circadian rhythms, sleep, and AD has been well‐documented. The etiopathogenesis of circadian system disruptions and AD serves some general characteristics that also open up the possibility of viewing them as a mutually reliant path. In this review, we have focused on different factors that are related to circadian rhythm dysfunction. The various pathogenic factors, such as amyloid‐beta, neurofibrillary tangles, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation, and circadian rhythm dysfunction may all contribute to AD. In this review, we also tried to focus on melatonin which is produced from the pineal gland and can be used to treat circadian dysfunction in AD. Aside from amyloid beta, tau pathology may have a notable influence on sleep. Conclusively, the center of this review is primarily based on the principal mechanistic complexities associated with circadian rhythm disruption, sleep deprivation, and AD, and it also emphasizes the potential therapeutic strategies to treat and prevent the progression of AD.

Abstract Major depressive disorder (MDD) and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are the most common causes of emotional distress that impair an individual's quality of life. MDD is a chronic mental illness that affects 300 million people across the world. Clinical manifestations of MDD include fatigue, loss of interest in routine tasks, psychomotor agitation, impaired ability to focus, suicidal ideation, hypersomnolence, altered psychosocial functioning, and appetite loss. Individuals with depression also demonstrate a reduced behavioral response while experiencing pleasure, a symptom known as anhedonia. Like MDD, PTSD is a prevalent and debilitating psychiatric disorder resulting from a traumatic incident such as sexual assault, war, severe accident, or natural disaster. Symptoms such as recalling event phases, hypervigilance, irritability, and anhedonia are common in PTSD. Both MDD and PTSD pose enormous socioeconomic burdens across the globe. The search for effective treatment with minimal side effects is still ongoing. Ketamine is known for its anesthetic and analgesic properties. Psychedelic and psychotropic effects of ketamine have been found on the nervous system, which highlights its toxicity. In this article, the effectiveness of ketamine as a potential therapeutic for PTSD and MDD along with its mechanisms of action, clinical trials, and possible side effects have been discussed.
