Time series of the vegetation index product MOD13Q1 from the Moderate Resolution Imagery Spectroradiometer (MODIS) were assessed for estimating tree foliage projective cover (FPC) and cover change from 2000 to 2006. The MOD13Q1 product consists of the enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). There were four challenges in using the MOD13Q1 product to derive tree FPC: assessing the impact of the sensor's varying view geometry on the vegetation index values; decoupling tree and grass cover contributions to the vegetation index signal; devising a method to relate the temporally composited vegetation index pixels to Lidar estimates of tree FPC for calibration; and estimating the accuracy of the FPC and FPC change measurements using independently derived Lidar, Landsat and MODIS cover estimates. The results show that, for complex canopies, the varying view geometry influenced the vegetation indices. The EVI was more sensitive to the view angle than the NDVI, indicating that it is sensitive to vegetation structure. An existing time series method successfully extracted the evergreen vegetation index signal while simultaneously minimizing the impact of varying view geometry. The vegetation indices were better suited to monitoring tree cover change than deriving accurate single-date estimates of cover at regional to continental scales. The EVI was more suited to monitoring change in high-biomass regions (cover >50%) where the NDVI begins to saturate. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have studied the effects of membrane surface charge on Na+ ion permeation and Ca2+ block in single, batrachotoxin-activated Na channels from rat brain, incorporated into planar lipid bilayers. In phospholipid membranes with no net charge (phosphatidylethanolamine, PE), at low divalent cation concentrations (approximately 100 microM Mg2+), the single channel current-voltage relation was linear and the single channel conductance saturated with increasing [Na+] and ionic strength, reaching a maximum (gamma max) of 31.8 pS, with an apparent dissociation constant (K0.5) of 40.5 mM. The data could be approximated by a rectangular hyperbola. In negatively charged bilayers (70% phosphatidylserine, PS; 30% PE) slightly larger conductances were observed at each concentration, but the hyperbolic form of the conductance-concentration relation was retained (gamma max = 32.9 pS and K0.5 = 31.5 mM) without any preferential increase in conductance at lower ionic strengths. Symmetrical application of Ca2+ caused a voltage-dependent block of the single channel current, with the block being greater at negative potentials. For any given voltage and [Na+] this block was identical in neutral and negatively charged membranes. These observations suggest that both the conduction pathway and the site(s) of Ca2+ block of the rat brain Na channel protein are electrostatically isolated from the negatively charged headgroups on the membrane lipids.

We report the exact calculation of the Stokes drag for cylindrical particles diffusing in Saffman's model membrane. Simultaneous prediction of lateral and rotational diffusion coefficients suggests that microviscosities may not be as large as previously thought and implicates the bathing viscosities.

Predictions, based on a previously developed theory, of the radii and asymmetric lipid distribution of mixed phosphatidylcholine/lysophosphatidylcholine and phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol vesicles of variable composition are presented. The results compare well with available experimental data, except for cis-unsaturated phosphatidylcholine/cholesterol vesicles at high concentrations of cholesterol. It is concluded that specific lipid-lipid interactions need not be invoked for saturated and trans-unsaturated phosphatidylcholine mixed with lysophosphatidylcholine or cholesterol. A discussion of the effect of packing stresses on induced flip-flop and non-spherical vesicles is also presented.
