Introduction: Studies on large samples agree on the negative impact of maternal perinatal depression (PD) on child's cognitive development. Early experience with insensitive maternal interactions appears to be predictive of poorer cognitive functioning. These children present a higher risk for the onset of socioemotional development, nutrition, growth and sleep disorders. Research on Covid-19 pandemic suggests that families, particularly mothers, may be at increased risk of psychological distress. Objectives: This study evaluates the effect of perinatal depression on child development and the impact of distress caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Methods: We designed a case-control study comparing, during Covid-19 pandemic, a group-A of children of mothers with PD (n=19), with a group-B of children of healthy mothers (n=21). The age of the children recruited was 4-35 months. Participating mothers underwent DP3-Interview and the socioemotional and adaptive-behavior Bayley's scales by telephone and completed an online survey (IES-R). Results:We found significantly lower scores on the Bayley socioemotional scale and in all the DP3-scales, in group-A. There is an inversely proportional correlation between the age of these children and overall development score of the DP3. On the IES-R scale, the medium scores in both groups show no psychological distress as a consequence of the Covid-19 pandemic, although mothers with PD show borderline total scores and higher hyperarousal scale values. Conclusions: This study confirms that PD is a risk factor for the onset of disorders in all areas of the child's development. This study evaluates the effects of biological factors of fish and seasonality on Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) accumulation in red mullet (Mullus barbatus) tissue. Specimens were collected monthly with a bottom trawl net in an offshore fishing ground in the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea (Geographical Sub Area 17) throughout 2016. The edible fillets of 380 individuals were analyzed for the concentrations of individual PAH, total PAH, and low, medium and high molecular weight (MW) PAHs. PAH bioaccumulation was related to their physicochemical characteristics (MW, and logarithm of the octanol-water partition coefficient, log K ow), some biological parameters of fish (body size, age, sex, reproductive stage and total lipid content), and catch season. The PAH bioaccumulation pattern and the effects of the different factors varied according to PAH MW. The heavier (medium and high MW) PAHs showed higher levels in winter-autumn and in pre-spawners compared with spawners and post-spawners. Our findings suggest that an important detoxification mechanism, albeit limited to the heavier PAHs, acts in the spawning and post-spawning stage. Low MW PAHs appeared to be unaffected by reproductive stage, lipid content and seasonality. Reproductive stage and seasonality seem to play an important role in the accumulation of heavier PAH, whereas total lipid content and age seem to exert a limited influence, and body size no effect at all. The benthic communities of the soft seabed inside and outside the Cesano–Senigallia artificial reef (central Adriatic Sea) were investigated seasonally for 2 years (spring 1997 to winter 1999) to evaluate the effects of the reef on the surrounding bottom. The community living close to the reef is typical for the coastal area. Mean species richness and densities over the entire sampling period were comparable inside and outside the reef, while higher values were recorded at the control site. However, the Shannon–Wiener diversity index was higher close to the reef than at the control. Physical factors associated with the presence of the artificial structures appear to affect composition and abundance of the infauna community more than biological factors do (predation). The area inside the reef was characterized by fine mud favouring the settlement of deposit and suspension feeders, mainly polychaetes. Outside the reef, molluscs were numerically dominant, with an increasing proportion of sandy-bottom species with increasing distance from the structures. These differences were more marked in spring and autumn, while in the other seasons the reef effect appeared to be reduced to a narrow area close to the structures. This research investigates the dynamics of contaminant exposure in European hake ( Merluccius merluccius , L. 1758) from the Adriatic Sea (Central Mediterranean Sea) by examining the levels of total mercury (THg) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the muscle fish tissues. The study explores the correlations between these pollutants and somatic indexes to identify the early warning signals of pollution and ecological effects. The levels of pollutants are influenced by season and sex. Lipids appear to have a minimal effect on the PAH levels, whereas they exhibit a positive correlation with mercury levels in the muscle. No significant relationships between the pollutants and condition indexes were observed, except for a positive correlation between THg and the gonadosomatic index, indicating a potential impact on the reproductive health of fish. In contrast, PAHs showed no meaningful correlation with condition indexes. Differences in contaminant accumulations and lipid levels between sexes reflect variations in metabolic activity, reproductive costs, and adaptive strategies to seasonal changes and energy demands. This study highlights the importance of long-term monitoring to improve pollution management, environmental conservation, and the protection of marine organisms' health.

Background/objectives: Benralizumab is a monoclonal antibody that targets the interleukin-5 receptor (IL-5Rα), leading to the rapid depletion of blood eosinophils. RCTs have demonstrated efficacy in patients with severe eosinophilic asthma (SEA). The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of benralizumab on sinonasal outcomes in a real-life setting in patients with SEA and concomitant chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP)., Methods: We included 25 patients (mean age: 57.47 years, range: 35-77, F/M = 12:13) who were prescribed 30 mg benralizumab every month for the first three administrations and then every 2 months. The primary endpoint was to evaluate changes in the SinoNasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22) and nasal polyp score (NPS) over a 24-month treatment period. Secondary endpoints included measuring the effects on nasal obstruction and impaired sense of smell., Results: The mean NPS score decreased significantly from 5.11 ± 1.84 at baseline to 2.37 ± 1.96 at 24 months. The mean SNOT-22 decreased from 57 ± 15.30 at baseline to 26 ± 16.73 at 24 months. The SSIT-16 mean score improved with an increase in olfactory performance from 5.23 ± 2.58 at baseline to 7 ± 3.65 at 24 months. Moreover, 8/25 patients (32%) required rescue treatment with systemic steroids and 2 patients required endoscopic sinus surgery., Conclusions: While the improvement may not seem optimal at 12 months, a progressive enhancement was noted during the second year of treatment. Despite our data showing an improvement in quality of life and a reduction in the size of nasal polyps, no significant improvement in olfactory sensitivity was observed. In addition, in several patients, rescue treatments were required to maintain control of nasal and sinus symptoms. A careful risk-benefit assessment is therefore needed when deciding to continue treatment, weighing the potential for further improvement against the risks of complications. Such decisions should always be made in the context of a multidisciplinary team.

Fisheries management requires improvement in scientific knowledge to ensure sustainable exploitation of important commercial species and population renewal. Within this context, this study focused on the reproductive biology of spot tail mantis shrimp, Squilla mantis , in the Central Mediterranean Sea, aiming to understand the reproductive pattern of this species and validate the macroscopic maturity scale through histological analysis. A multi-year sampling was performed from 2016 to 2020 by a commercial fishing fleet in the Northern Central Adriatic Sea (GSA 17), and a total of 2206 individuals were collected. The monthly average value of the total sex ratio of S. mantis was 0.524 ± 0.044 ( mean ± SEM ) in favor of females, which dominated the population from September to April. The proposed 5 stage macroscopic maturity scale was validated histologically through histological analysis, confirming synchronous ovarian development. The somatic indexes (GSI and K Fulton) and monthly incidence of macroscopic ovarian maturity stages highlighted a protracted reproductive season from winter to spring (January-May). Although the length-weight relationship showed a similar growth trend between genders, males reached a bigger size in terms of carapace length (C.L.) and dominated the population from 32 mm (C.L.). The macroscopic L50 estimated was 25.94 mm (C.L.).

Background: Lymphatic malformations are vascular developmental anomalies varying from local superficial masses to diffuse infiltrating lesions, resulting in disfigurement. Patients' outcomes range from spontaneous regression to severe sequelae notwithstanding appropriate treatment. The current classification guides, in part, clinicians through the decision-making process, prognosis prediction and choice of therapeutic strategies. Even though the understanding of molecular basis of the disease has been recently improved, a standardized management algorithm has not been reached yet., Results: Here, we report our experience on five children with different lymphatic anomalies of the head and neck region treated by applying a multidisciplinary approach reaching a consensus among specialists on problem-solving and setting priorities., Conclusions: Although restitutio ad integrum was rarely achieved and the burden of care is challenging for patients, caregivers and healthcare providers, this study demonstrates how the referral to expert centres can significantly improve outcomes by alleviating parental stress and ameliorating patients' quality of life. Introduction: Management of severe chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNP) has changed significantly in recent years, with different treatments now available including biologics and endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), although there are still few comparative studies. We aimed to compare 1-year outcomes of patients with severe CRSwNP treated with dupilumab or ESS plus intranasal corticosteroids (INCS)., Methods: In this retrospective, real-life, observational, cohort study, we enrolled 101 patients with severe CRSwNP who were treated with INCS and either ESS (n = 49) or dupilumab (n = 52). The following outcomes were considered: nasal polyp score (NPS), Sino Nasal Outcome Test-22 (SNOT-22), visual analogue scale (VAS) for specific symptoms, Sniffin' Sticks identification test (SSIT), need for oral corticosteroids (OCS) and local eosinophilia detected by nasal cytology., Results: ΔNPS was significantly higher in the surgery group up to 12 months when the difference with dupilumab group was no longer significant (ΔNPS: 4 vs. 4.1). ΔVAS rhinorrhoea, ΔVAS smell and ΔSNOT-22 were significantly higher in the dupilumab group at 12 months (p < .05). SSIT scores were significantly better in the dupilumab group starting from the first month of follow-up (p < .05). In the dupilumab group, only 6.1% of patients had detectable local eosinophilia compared to 57% in the surgery group alongside with a lower need for OCS (16.3% vs. 61%)., Conclusions: Both dupilumab and ESS were effective in improving outcomes in patients with severe CRSwNP over 12 months. Background: Perinatal mental health is a topic of growing interest, that could affect mothers in a period of high vulnerability, and the impact of coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic is an important factor to consider in this field. The aim of our study is to study the correlations between five dimensions of personality and subjective Covid-19-related distress in a sample of women in the perinatal period., Methods: The study included 114 Italian women in the perinatal period. Subjects were asked to complete the Big Five Inventory (BIG-5) and a version of the Impact of Event Scale - Revised (IES-R) anchored to Covid-19-related distress., Results: When the BIG-5 personality traits and several confounding variables were included in a regression model with IES-R total score as criterion, neuroticism subscale of BIG-5 inventory was the only variable independently associated with higher IES-R total score (p<0.001)., Conclusion: Our study highlights the importance of considering the personality vulnerability factors that can worsen psychopathological symptoms of women in the perinatal period, especially in periods of high psychological stress.

Grape by-products have already been used in cosmetics, food industries, but also animal feed industry, especially monogastrics and in aquaculture. Grape by-products have been studied for a long time and their principal activities are antimicrobial and antioxidant. Concerning aquaculture, the great demand and necessity to replace animal sources with vegetable ones, has placed grape by-products as possible new phytonutrients with beneficial properties. The purpose of this review is to describe the use of grape by-products in aquaculture, during the last decade, concerning their effects on: 1) gut health and welfare status; 2) growth performances; 3) quality of fillets and flesh during the rearing cycle and shelf-life products. Although other studies highlighted that the high supplementation of grape by-products could negatively affect fish health and growth, due to antinutritional factors (tannins), grape by-products are proven to be valuable phytonutrients that can be incorporated into fish feed to enhance growth and health during rearing conditions. Even in fish products, their utilization has proven to elongate the properties and shelf-life of fillets and minces. Further studies to evaluate the possible integrations or replacements with grape by-products in fish feed in order to evaluate their effectiveness in aquaculture from a sustainable circular economy perspective will be desirable to enhance the use of these products., Competing Interests: The authors declare that they have no known competing financial interests or personal relationships that could have appeared to influence the work reported in this paper., (© 2024 The Authors.)

Objective: This study aims to determine the prevalence and types of Onodi cells through computed tomography and investigate the relationship between Onodi cell and the surrounding structures, paying particular attention to the risky proximity to the optic nerve canal., Methods: In this study, 430 computed tomography scans of paranasal sinuses were analysed to establish the prevalence and different types of Onodi cells. Furthermore, the relationship between Onodi cell and different patterns of sphenoid sinus pneumatisation and surrounding structures were investigated. Special attention was paid to the relationship between Onodi cell and the optic nerve canal, particularly in cases when the optic nerve canal was bulging by more than 50% into the Onodi cell (Type IV)., Results: The Onodi cell was detected in 21.6% of cases, with the most common being Type I (48.5% right, 54.3% left). Type IV bulging of the optic nerve canal into the Onodi cell was observed in 47.1% of cases on the right side, 41.2% on the left side and bilateral in 11.7% of cases., Conclusions: In our series, we observed a high prevalence of Type IV optic nerve bulging into the Onodi cell. The occurrence of clinically significant changes in empathy is a matter of debate in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Altered empathic mechanisms observed in AD may be a consequence of cognitive impairment, more specifically of reduced mental flexibility and self-regulation. The present study explored possible changes in empathy for subjects in the prodromal phase of AD, namely mild cognitive impairment (MCI) due to AD, and of their neural substrates. Eighteen MCI patients and 20 healthy controls (HC) were included in the study. The Interpersonal Reactivity Index (IRI) questionnaire was administered to each participant. The IRI encompasses four factors: Perspective Taking; Fantasy; Empathic Concern; Personal Distress. MCI patients underwent a magnetic resonance imaging structural examination and were compared to 30 healthy controls (HC-MRI). A limited number of cortical and subcortical regions involved in social cognition was selected as regions of interest (ROIs). MCI individuals obtained lower scores than HC in the Perspective Taking and Fantasy subscales of the IRI, whereas they obtained higher scores on Empathic Concern. Regarding neuroimaging data, a significant correlation emerged between IRI scores and the neural measurements of different regions involved in empathy, especially covering the temporoparietal junction, which is a critical region engaged in both affective and cognitive dimensions of empathy. The results of the present study suggest that a subtle impairment in regulatory mechanisms of empathy may occur very early during the course of AD, possibly as a consequence of neuropathological changes occurring in brain regions involved in social cognition., (© 2023. Data-driven algorithms have proven to be effective for a variety of medical tasks, including disease categorization and prediction, personalized medicine design, and imaging diagnostics. Although their performance is frequently on par with that of clinicians, their widespread use is constrained by a number of obstacles, including the requirement for high-quality data that are typical of the population, the difficulty of explaining how they operate, and ethical and regulatory concerns. The use of data augmentation and synthetic data generation methodologies, such as federated learning and explainable artificial intelligence ones, could provide a viable solution to the current issues, facilitating the widespread application of artificial intelligence algorithms in the clinical application domain and reducing the time needed for prevention, diagnosis, and prognosis by up to 70%. To this end, a novel AI-based functional framework is conceived and presented in this paper.

Background: Pregnancy is a crucial transition moment exposing women to potential mental health problems, especially depressive disturbances. Sociodemographic, pregnancy-related, and psychological factors have been related to depressive symptoms in the perinatal period. This study aims at (1) exploring personality and individual factors related with perinatal depressive symptoms, and (2) testing the mediating role of personality in the relation between characteristics of the woman's family of origin and depressive symptoms., Methods: Women in the perinatal period admitted to the gynecology unit for motherhood-related routine assessments (n = 241) were included in the study. A survey on individual sociodemographic, clinical, and pregnancy-related factors was administered, also including the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the BIG-5 personality test., Results: Couple conflict and neuroticism were independent and directly correlated with EPDS total score (respectively: B = 2.337; p = .017; B = 0.303; p < .001). Neuroticism was a significant mediator of the relation between the presence of a psychiatric disorder diagnosis in participant's parents and the EPDS total score (indirect b = 0.969; BCCI95%=0.366-1.607)., Conclusions: Couple relation and neuroticism traits are individual factors related to depressive symptoms in the perinatal period. The family of origin also plays an indirect role on perinatal depressive symptoms. Background and Purpose: Essential tremor (ET) is a common and heterogeneous disorder characterized by postural/kinetic tremor of the upper limbs and other body segments and by non-motor symptoms, including cognitive and psychiatric abnormalities. Only a limited number of longitudinal studies have comprehensively and simultaneously investigated motor and non-motor symptom progression in ET. Possible soft signs that configure the ET-plus diagnosis are also under-investigated in follow-up studies. We aimed to longitudinally investigate the progression of ET manifestations by means of clinical and neurophysiological evaluation., Methods: Thirty-seven ET patients underwent evaluation at baseline (T0) and at follow-up (T1; mean interval ± SD = 39.89 ± 9.83 months). The assessment included the clinical and kinematic evaluation of tremor and voluntary movement execution, as well as the investigation of cognitive and psychiatric disorders., Results: A higher percentage of patients showed tremor in multiple body segments and rest tremor at T1 as compared to T0 (all p-values < 0.01). At T1, the kinematic analysis revealed reduced finger-tapping movement amplitude and velocity as compared to T0 (both p-values < 0.001). The prevalence of cognitive and psychiatric disorders did not change between T0 and T1. Female sex, absence of family history, and rest tremor at baseline were identified as predictive factors of worse disease progression., Conclusions: ET progression is characterized by the spread of tremor in multiple body segments and by the emergence of soft signs. MRI is undoubtedly the cornerstone of brain tumor imaging, playing a key role in all phases of patient management, starting from diagnosis, through therapy planning, to treatment response and/or recurrence assessment. Currently, neuroimaging can describe morphologic and non-morphologic (functional, hemodynamic, metabolic, cellular, microstructural, and sometimes even genetic) characteristics of brain tumors, greatly contributing to diagnosis and follow-up. Knowing the technical aspects, strength and limits of each MR technique is crucial to correctly interpret MR brain studies and to address clinicians to the best treatment strategy. This article aimed to provide an overview of neuroimaging in the assessment of adult primary brain tumors. We started from the basilar role of conventional/morphological MR sequences, then analyzed, one by one, the non-morphological techniques, and finally highlighted future perspectives, such as radiomics and artificial intelligence.

Diagnosis and management of sinonasal complications of dental diseases or treatment (SCDDT) may be challenging. We aimed to report our real-life experience in patients treated with endoscopic endonasal approach describing data about symptoms, etiology, extension of the disease and success rate. We evaluated retrospectively data about 262 patients diagnosed as SCDDT and managed from August 2015 to May 2022. In 44.65% cases, maxillary sinus complications were determined by a dental disorder; the remaining 55.34% of cases were iatrogenic. Patients were managed according to our multidisciplinary protocol including ENT, dental, and radiological evaluation. Treatments were planned with a personalized approach, based on the patient’s clinical characteristics; all patients were treated with an endonasal endoscopic mini-invasive conservative approach. Combined dental treatment was performed simultaneously in 152/262 (58%) of patients; in the remaining cases, it was postponed after surgery. The overall treatment success rate (symptom resolution and endoscopically observed maxillary sinus healing) was 96.5%. At 15 days after surgery, we observed a significant improvement in the quality of life. The mean post-operative Sinonasal outcome test-22 (SNOT-22) score was significantly lower compared to baseline (6 versus 43.4; p < 0.05). Our study showed that endoscopic sinus surgery can be a successful procedure for treatment of SCDDT, leading to fast resolution of sinonasal symptoms and improving the quality of life. Furthermore, the technique allows removal of migrated dental material or dental implants even in challenging cases.
