In this work, we calculate the partition functions and thermodynamic quantities of molecular hydrogen isotopologues using the rovibrational energy levels provided by the highly accurate ab initio adiabatic potential energy functions recently determined by Pachucki and Komasa (Pachucki, K.; Komasa, J. J. Chem. Phys.2014, 141, 224103). The partition functions are calculated by including all bound energy levels of the isotopologues, up to their dissociation limits, plus the quasi-bound levels lying below the centrifugal potential barriers. For the homonuclear isotopologues, H2, D2, and T2, we also determine the partition functions and thermodynamic quantities of the normal mixtures using the statistical treatment recently proposed by Colonna et al. (Colonna, G.; D'Angola, A.; Capitelli, M. Int. J. Hydrogen Energy2012, 37, 9656) based on the definition of the partition function of the mixture, which avoids inconsistencies in the values of the thermodynamic quantities depending directly on the internal partition function, in the high-temperature limit.

We show that the determinant of the co-exact $p$-form on spheres and anti-deSitter spaces can be written as an integral transform of bulk and edge Harish-Chandra characters. The edge character of a co-exact $p$-form contains characters of anti-symmetric tensors of rank lower to $p$ all the way to the zero-form. Using this result we evaluate the partition function of $p$-forms and demonstrate that they obey known properties under Hodge duality. We show that partition function of conformal forms in even $d+1$ dimensions, on hyperbolic cylinders can be written as integral transforms involving only the bulk characters. This supports earlier observations that entanglement entropy evaluated using partition functions on hyperbolic cylinders do not contain contributions from the edge modes. For conformal coupled scalars we demonstrate that the character integral representation of the free energy on hyperbolic cylinders and branched spheres coincide. We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form $Q$. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by $Q$. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We propose a concrete form of a vertex function, which we call O-vertex, for the intersection between an O5-plane and a 5-brane in the topological vertex formalism, as an extension of the work of arXiv:1709.01928. Using the O-vertex it is possible to compute the Nekrasov partition functions of 5d theories realized on any 5-brane web diagrams with O5-planes. We apply our proposal to 5-brane webs with an O5-plane and compute the partition functions of pure SO($N$) gauge theories and the pure $G_2$ gauge theory. The obtained results agree with the results known in the literature. We also compute the partition function of the pure SU(3) gauge theory with the Chern-Simons level $9$. The relation between supersymmetric gauge theories in four dimensions and quantum spin systems is exploited to find an explicit formula for the Jost function of the $N$ site $\mathfrak{sl}_{2}$ $XXX$ spin chain (for infinite dimensional complex spin representations), as well as the $SL_N$ Gaudin system, which reduces, in a limiting case, to that of the $N$-particle periodic Toda chain. Using the non-perturbative Dyson-Schwinger equations of the supersymmetric gauge theory we establish relations between the spin chain commuting Hamiltonians with the twisted chiral ring of gauge theory. Along the way we explore the chamber dependence of the supersymmetric partition function, also the expectation value of the surface defects, giving new evidence for the AGT conjecture., 76 pages, 3 figures, fix typo

We consider string theory on $\text{AdS}_3 \times \text{S}^3 \times \mathbb{T}^4$ in the tensionless limit, with one unit of NS-NS flux. This theory is conjectured to describe the symmetric product orbifold CFT. We consider the string on different Euclidean backgrounds such as thermal $\text{AdS}_3$, the BTZ black hole, conical defects and wormhole geometries. In simple examples we compute the full string partition function. We find it to be independent of the precise bulk geometry, but only dependent on the geometry of the conformal boundary. For example, the string partition function on thermal $\text{AdS}_3$ and the conical defect with a torus boundary is shown to agree, thus giving evidence for the equivalence of the tensionless string on these different background geometries. We also find that thermal $\text{AdS}_3$ and the BTZ black hole are dual descriptions and the vacuum of the BTZ black hole is mapped to a single long string winding many times asymptotically around thermal $\text{AdS}_3$. Thus the system yields a concrete example of the string-black hole transition. Consequently, reproducing the boundary partition function does not require a sum over bulk geometries, but rather agrees with the string partition function on any bulk geometry with the appropriate boundary. We argue that the same mechanism can lead to a resolution of the factorization problem when geometries with disconnected boundaries are considered, since the connected and disconnected geometries give the same contribution and we do not have to include them separately., 49 pages; v2: added references and corrected typos

Motivated by recent advances in Donaldson-Thomas theory, four-dimensional $$ \mathcal{N} $$ N = 4 string-string duality is examined in a reduced rank theory on a less studied BPS sector. In particular we identify candidate partition functions of “untwisted” quarter-BPS dyons in the heterotic ℤ2 CHL model by studying the associated chiral genus two partition function, based on the M-theory lift of string webs argument by Dabholkar and Gaiotto. This yields meromorphic Siegel modular forms for the Iwahori subgroup B(2) ⊂ Sp4(ℤ) which generate BPS indices for dyons with untwisted sector electric charge, in contrast to twisted sector dyons counted by a multiplicative lift of twisted-twining elliptic genera known from Mathieu moonshine. The new partition functions are shown to satisfy the expected constraints coming from wall-crossing and S-duality symmetry as well as the black hole entropy based on the Gauss-Bonnet term in the effective action. In these aspects our analysis confirms and extends work of Banerjee, Sen and Srivastava, which only addressed a subset of the untwisted sector dyons considered here. Our results are also compared with recently conjectured formulae of Bryan and Oberdieck for the partition functions of primitive DT invariants of the CHL orbifold X = (K3 × T2)/ℤ2, as suggested by string duality with type IIA theory on X.

We study 6d E-string theory with defects on a circle. Our basic strategy is to apply the geometric transition to the supersymmetric gauge theories. First, we calculate the partition functions of the 5d SU(3)$_0$ gauge theory with 10 flavors, which is UV-dual to the 5d Sp(2) gauge theory with 10 flavors, based on two different 5-brane web diagrams, and check that two partition functions agree with each other. Then, by utilizing the geometric transition, we find the surface defect partition function for E-string on $\mathbb{R}^4\times T^2$. We also discuss that our result is consistent with the elliptic genus. Based on the result, we show how the global symmetry is broken by the defects, and discuss that the breaking pattern depends on where/how we insert the defects., Comment: v1: 39 pages, 22 figures; v2: published version

We study 3D pure Einstein quantum gravity with negative cosmological constant, in the regime where the AdS radius $l$ is of the order of the Planck scale. Specifically, when the Brown-Henneaux central charge $c=3l/2G_N$ ($G_N$ is the 3D Newton constant) equals $c=1/2$, we establish duality between 3D gravity and 2D Ising conformal field theory by matching gravity and conformal field theory partition functions for AdS spacetimes with general asymptotic boundaries. This duality was suggested by a genus-one calculation of Castro et al. [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 85}, 024032 (2012)]. Extension beyond genus-one requires new mathematical results based on 3D Topological Quantum Field Theory; these turn out to uniquely select the $c=1/2$ theory among all those with $c, 54 pages, 12 figures

We study a unitary matrix model of the Gross-Witten-Wadia type, extended with the addition of characteristic polynomial insertions. The model interpolates between solvable unitary matrix models and is the unitary counterpart of a deformed Cauchy ensemble. Exact formulas for the partition function and Wilson loops are given in terms of Toeplitz determinants and minors and large $N$ results are obtained by using Szeg\"o theorem with a Fisher-Hartwig singularity. In the large $N$ (planar) limit with two scaled couplings, the theory exhibits a surprisingly intricate phase structure in the two-dimensional parameter space., Comment: 22 pages

We use localization to compute the partition function of a four dimensional, supersymmetric, abelian gauge theory on a hemisphere coupled to charged matter on the boundary. Our theory has eight real supercharges in the bulk of which four are broken by the presence of the boundary. The main result is that the partition function is identical to that of ${\mathcal N}=2$ abelian Chern-Simons theory on a three-sphere coupled to chiral multiplets, but where the quantized Chern-Simons level is replaced by an arbitrary complexified gauge coupling $\tau$. The localization reduces the path integral to a single ordinary integral over a real variable. This integral in turn allows us to calculate the scaling dimensions of certain protected operators and two-point functions of abelian symmetry currents at arbitrary values of $\tau$. Because the underlying theory has conformal symmetry, the current two-point functions tell us the zero temperature conductivity of the Lorentzian versions of these theories at any value of the coupling. We comment on S-dualities which relate different theories of supersymmetric graphene. In this work we extend the holographic correspondence between flat space limit of chiral topological massive gravity and a specific unitary field theory to flat space limit of chiral general minimal massive gravity and chiral exotic general massive gravity. To check the conjecture, we compare the entropy and partition function of flat limit of BTZ black hole from viewpoint of both sides.

The generating functional of stress tensor correlation functions in two-dimensional conformal field theory is the nonlocal Polyakov action, or equivalently, the Liouville or Alekseev-Shatashvili action. I review its holographic derivation within the AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$ correspondence, both in metric and Chern-Simons formulations. I also provide a detailed comparison with the well-known Hamiltonian reduction of three-dimensional gravity to a flat Liouville theory, and conclude that the two results are unrelated. In particular, the flat Liouville action is still off-shell with respect to bulk equations of motion, and simply vanishes in case the latter are imposed. We propose a novel codimension-n holography, called cone holography, between a gravitational theory in $(d+1)$-dimensional conical spacetime and a CFT on the $(d+1-n)$-dimensional defects. Similar to wedge holography, the cone holography can be obtained by taking the zero-volume limit of holographic defect CFT. Remarkably, it can be regarded as a holographic dual of the edge modes on the defects. For one class of solutions, we prove that the cone holography is equivalent to AdS/CFT, by showing that the classical gravitational action and thus the CFT partition function in large N limit are the same for the two theories. In general, cone holography and AdS/CFT are different due to the infinite towers of massive Kaluza-Klein modes on the branes. We test cone holography by studying Weyl anomaly, Entanglement/R\'enyi entropy and correlation functions, and find good agreements between the holographic and the CFT results. In particular, the c-theorem is obeyed by cone holography. These are strong supports for our proposal. We discuss two kinds of boundary conditions, the mixed boundary condition and Neumann boundary condition, and find that they both define a consistent theory of cone holography. We also analyze the mass spectrum on the brane and find that the larger the tension is, the more continuous the mass spectrum is. The cone holography can be regarded as a generalization of the wedge holography, and it is closely related to the defect CFT, entanglement/R\'enyi entropy and AdS/BCFT(dCFT). We consider the $S^3\times S^1$ superconformal index $\mathcal{I}(\tau)$ of 4d $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories. The Hamiltonian index is defined in a standard manner as the Witten index with a chemical potential $\tau$ coupled to a combination of angular momenta on $S^3$ and the $U(1)$ R-charge. We develop the all-order asymptotic expansion of the index as $q = e^{2 \pi i \tau}$ approaches a root of unity, i.e. as $\widetilde \tau \equiv m \tau + n \to 0$, with $m,n$ relatively prime integers. The asymptotic expansion of $\log\mathcal{I}(\tau)$ has terms of the form $\widetilde \tau^k$, $k = -2, -1, 0, 1$. We determine the coefficients of the $k=-2,-1,1$ terms from the gauge theory data, and provide evidence that the $k=0$ term is determined by the Chern-Simons partition function on $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_m$. We explain these findings from the point of view of the 3d theory obtained by reducing the 4d gauge theory on the $S^1$. The supersymmetric functional integral of the 3d theory takes the form of a matrix integral over the dynamical 3d fields, with an effective action given by supersymmetrized Chern-Simons couplings of background and dynamical gauge fields. The singular terms in the $\widetilde \tau \to 0$ expansion (dictating the growth of the 4d index) are governed by the background Chern-Simons couplings. The constant term has a background piece as well as a piece given by the localized functional integral over the dynamical 3d gauge multiplet. We explore thermodynamic contributions to the three-dimensional de Sitter horizon originating from metric and Chern-Simons gauge field fluctuations. In Euclidean signature these are computed by the partition function of gravity coupled to matter semi-classically expanded about the round three-sphere saddle. We investigate a corresponding Lorentzian picture - drawing inspiration from the topological entanglement entropy literature - in the form of an edge-mode theory residing at the de Sitter horizon. We extend the discussion to three-dimensional gravity with positive cosmological constant, viewed (semi-classically) as a complexified Chern-Simons theory. The putative gravitational edge-mode theory is a complexified version of the chiral Wess-Zumino-Witten model associated to the edge-modes of ordinary Chern-Simons theory. We introduce and solve a family of complexified Abelian Chern-Simons theories as a way to elucidate some of the more salient features of the gravitational edge-mode theories. We investigate gauge anomalies in the context of orbifold conformal field theories. Such anomalies manifest as failures of modular invariance in the constituents of the orbifold partition function. We review how this irregularity is classified by cohomology and how extending the orbifold group can remove it. Working with such extensions requires an understanding of the consistent ways in which extending groups can act on the twisted states of the original symmetry, which leads us to a discrete-torsion like choice that exists in orbifolds with trivially-acting subgroups. We review a general method for constructing such extensions and investigate its application to orbifolds. Through numerous explicit examples we test the conjecture that consistent extensions should be equivalent to (in general multiple copies of) orbifolds by non-anomalous subgroups., 37 pages, 2 appendices, 3 figures

We present a new expression for the partition function of the refined Chern-Simons theory on S3 with an arbitrary gauge group, which is explicitly equal to 1 when the coupling constant is zero. Using this form of the partition function we show that the previously known Krefl-Schwarz representation of the partition function of the refined Chern-Simons theory on S3 can be generalized to all simply laced algebras.For all non-simply laced gauge algebras, we derive similar representations of that partition function, which makes it possible to transform it into a product of multiple sine functions aiming at the further establishment of duality with the refined topological strings.

We discuss a recipe to produce a lattice construction of fermionic phases of matter on unoriented manifolds. This is performed by extending the construction of spin TQFT via the Grassmann integral proposed by Gaiotto and Kapustin, to the unoriented pin$_\pm$ case. As an application, we construct gapped boundaries for time-reversal-invariant Gu-Wen fermionic SPT phases. In addition, we provide a lattice definition of (1+1)d pin$_-$ invertible theory whose partition function is the Arf-Brown-Kervaire invariant, which generates the $\mathbb{Z}_8$ classification of (1+1)d topological superconductors. We also compute the indicator formula of $\mathbb{Z}_{16}$ valued time-reversal anomaly for (2+1)d pin$_+$ TQFT based on our construction., 26 pages, 6 figures

We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka blowup equations to arbitrary gauge group with hypermultiplets in arbitrary representations. Using our blowup equations, we compute the instanton partition functions for 4d N=2 and 5d N=1 gauge theories for arbitrary gauge theory with a large class of matter representations, without knowing explicit construction of the instanton moduli space. Our examples include exceptional gauge theories with fundamentals, SO(N) gauge theories with spinors, and SU(6) gauge theories with rank-3 antisymmetric hypers. $W$-representation realizes partition functions by an action of a cut-and-join-like operator on the vacuum state with a zero-mode background. We provide explicit formulas of this kind for $\beta$- and $q,t$-deformations of the simplest rectangular complex matrix model. In the latter case, instead of the complicated definition in terms of multiple Jackson integrals, we define partition functions as the weight-two series, made from Macdonald polynomials, which are evaluated at different loci in the space of time variables. Resulting expression for the $\hat W$ operator appears related to the problem of simple Hurwitz numbers (contributing are also the Young diagrams with all but one lines of length two and one). This problem is known to exhibit nice integrability properties. Still the answer for $\hat W$ can seem unexpectedly sophisticated and calls for improvements. Since matrix models lie at the very basis of all gauge- and string-theory constructions, our exercise provides a good illustration of the jump in complexity between $\beta$- and $q,t$-deformations -- which is not always seen at the accidently simple level of Calogero-Ruijsenaars Hamiltonians (where both deformations are equally straightforward). The mirror curves enable us to study B-model topological strings on non-compact toric Calabi--Yau threefolds. One of the method to obtain the mirror curves is to calculate the partition function of the topological string with single brane. In this paper, we discuss two types of geometries; one is the chain of $N$ $\mathbb{P}^1$'s which we call `$N$-chain geometry,' the other is the chain of $N$ $\mathbb{P}^1$'s with a compactification which we call `periodic $N$-chain geometry.' We calculate the partition functions of the open topological strings on these geometries, and obtain the mirror curves and their quantization. Through the computation, we find some difference equations of (elliptic) hypergeometric functions. We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of $c$ free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space $\mathbb H/SL(2,\mathbb Z)$, and of target space moduli space $O(c,c;\mathbb Z)\backslash O(c,c;\mathbb R)/O(c)\times O(c)$. This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS$_3$ gravity. We study constraints coming from the modular invariance of the partition function of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We constrain the spectrum of CFTs in the presence of holomorphic and anti-holomorphic currents using the semi-definite programming. In particular, we find the bounds on the twist gap for the non-current primaries depend dramatically on the presence of holomorphic currents, showing numerous kinks and peaks. Various rational CFTs are realized at the numerical boundary of the twist gap, saturating the upper limits on the degeneracies. Such theories include Wess-Zumino-Witten models for the Deligne's exceptional series, the Monster CFT and the Baby Monster CFT. We also study modular constraints imposed by $\mathcal{W}$-algebras of various type and observe that the bounds on the gap depend on the choice of $\mathcal{W}$-algebra in the small central charge region., Comment: 49 pages, 23 figures

Working within the path-integral framework we first establish a duality between the partion functions of two $U(1)$ gauge theories with a theta term in $d=4$ space-time dimensions. Then, after a dimensional reduction to $d=3$ dimensions we arrive to the partition function of a $U(1)$ gauge theory coupled to a scalar field with an action that exhibits a Dirac monopole solution. A subsequent reduction to $d=2$ dimensions leads to the partition function of a theory in which the gauge field decouples from two scalars which have non-trivial vortex-like solutions. Finally this $d=2$ partition function can be related to the bosonized version of the two-dimensional QED$_2$ (Schwinger) model., 10 pages

A well-known conjecture by Lovasz and Plummer from the 1970s asserting that a bridgeless cubic graph has exponentially many perfect matchings was solved in the affirmative by Esperet et al. (Adv. Math. 2011). On the other hand, Chudnovsky and Seymour (Combinatorica 2012) proved the conjecture for the special case of cubic planar graphs. In our work we consider random bridgeless cubic planar graphs with the uniform distribution on graphs with n vertices. Under this model we show that the expected number of perfect matchings in labeled bridgeless cubic planar graphs is asymptotically \(c\gamma ^n\), where \(c>0\) and \(\gamma \sim 1.14196\) is an explicit algebraic number. We also compute the expected number of perfect matchings in (non necessarily bridgeless) cubic planar graphs and provide lower bounds for unlabeled graphs. Our starting point is a correspondence between counting perfect matchings in rooted cubic planar maps and the partition function of the Ising model in rooted triangulations. We introduce a formalism for describing holomorphic blocks of 3d quiver gauge theories using networks of Ding-Iohara-Miki algebra intertwiners. Our approach is very direct and gives an explicit identification of the blocks with Dotsenko-Fateev type integrals for q-deformed quiver W-algebras. The character integral representation of one loop partition functions is useful to establish the relation between partition functions of conformal fields on Weyl equivalent spaces. The Euclidean space $S^a\times AdS_b$ can be mapped to $S^{a+b}$ provided $S^a$ and $AdS_b$ are of the same radius. As an example, to begin with, we show that the partition function in the character integral representation of conformally coupled free scalars and fermions are identical on $S^a\times AdS_b$ and $S^{a+b}$. We then demonstrate that the partition function of higher derivative conformal scalars and fermions are also the same on hyperbolic cylinders and branched spheres. The partition function of the four-derivative conformal vector gauge field on the branched sphere in $d=6$ dimension can be expressed as an integral over `naive' bulk and `naive' edge characters. However, the partition function of the conformal vector gauge field on $S^1_q\times AdS_5$ contains only the `naive' bulk part of the partition function. This follows the same pattern which was observed for the partition of conformal $p$-form fields on hyperbolic cylinders. We use the partition function of higher derivative conformal fields on hyperbolic cylinders to obtain a linear relationship between the Hofman-Maldacena variables which enables us to show that these theories are non-unitary., 44 pages, 3 tables and 7 figures

Mirror symmetry, a three dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ IR duality, has been studied in detail for quiver gauge theories of the $ADE$-type (as well as their affine versions) with unitary gauge groups. The $A$-type quivers (also known as linear quivers) and the associated mirror dualities have a particularly simple realization in terms of a Type IIB system of D3-D5-NS5-branes. In this paper, we present a systematic field theory prescription for constructing 3d mirror pairs beyond the $ADE$ quiver gauge theories, starting from a dual pair of $A$-type quivers with unitary gauge groups. The construction involves a certain generalization of the $S$ and the $T$ operations, which arise in the context of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ action on a 3d CFT with a $U(1)$ 0-form global symmetry. We implement this construction in terms of two supersymmetric observables -- the round sphere partition function and the superconformal index on $S^2 \times S^1$. We discuss explicit examples of various (non-$ADE$) infinite families of mirror pairs that can be obtained in this fashion. In addition, we use the above construction to conjecture explicit 3d $\mathcal{N}=4$ Lagrangians for 3d SCFTs, which arise in the deep IR limit of certain Argyres-Douglas theories compactified on a circle., Comment: (14+82) pages + appendices, many figures.Section 1 provides a brief summary of the paper. In this paper, we introduce and motivate the studies of Quantum Weyl Gravity (also known as Conformal Gravity). We discuss some appealing features of this theory both on classical and quantum level. The construction of the quantum theory is described in detail to the one-loop level. To facilitate computations we use only physical degrees of freedom, which are singled out through the York decomposition. At the one-loop level we compute the partition function around a general Einstein space. Next, the functional renormalization group of couplings in Quantum Weyl Gravity is investigated. We reproduce completely previous results obtained on maximally symmetric and Ricci-flat backgrounds. We compute the large N limit of the partition function of the Euclidean Yang--Mills measure with structure group SU(N) or U(N) on all closed compact surfaces, orientable or not, excepted for the sphere and the projective plane. This limit is finite as opposed to the case of the sphere and presumably the projective plane. We expect that the results we present might give an insight towards the master field on these surfaces., 25 pages, 4 figures

We generalize Nakajima-Yoshioka's blowup formula to calculate the partition functions counting the spectrum of bound states to half-BPS Wilson loop operators in 5d (and 6d) supersymmetric field theories. The partition function in the presence of a Wilson loop operator on the $\Omega$-background is factorized when put on the blowup $\hat{\mathbb{C}}^2$ into two Wilson loop partition functions under the localization. This structure provides a set of blowup equations for Wilson loop operators. We explain how to formulate the blowup equations and solve them to compute the partition functions of Wilson loop operators. We test this idea by explicitly calculating the Wilson loop partition functions in various 5d/6d field theories and comparing them against known results and expected dualities., Comment: 69 pages, 3 figures, v2: published version

We compute, in the large $N$ limit, the topologically twisted index of the 3d $T[SU(N)]$ theory, namely the partition function on $\Sigma_{\mathfrak{g}} \times S^1$, with a topological twist on the Riemann surface $\Sigma_{\mathfrak{g}}$. To provide an expression for this quantity, we take advantage of some recent results obtained for five dimensional quiver gauge theories. WZW models live on a moduli space parameterized by current-current deformations. The moduli space defines an ensemble of conformal field theories, which generically have $N$ abelian conserved currents and central charge $c > N$. We calculate the average partition function and show that it can be interpreted as a sum over 3-manifolds. This suggests that the ensemble-averaged theory has a holographic dual, generalizing recent results on Narain CFTs. The bulk theory, at the perturbative level, is identified as $U(1)^{2N}$ Chern-Simons theory coupled to additional matter fields. From a mathematical perspective, our principal result is a Siegel-Weil formula for the characters of an affine Lie algebra., 22+17 pages

In this work we continue the study of the one-loop partition function for higher derivative conformal higher spin (CHS) fields in six dimensions and its holographic counterpart given by massless higher spin Fronsdal fields in seven dimensions. In going beyond the conformal class of the boundary round 6-sphere, we start by considering a Ricci-flat, but not conformally flat, boundary and the corresponding Poincar\'e-Einstein spacefilling metric. Here we are able to match the UV logarithmic divergence of the boundary with the IR logarithmic divergence of the bulk, very much like in the known 4D/5D setting, under the assumptions of factorization of the higher derivative CHS kinetic operator and WKB-exactness of the heat kernel of the dual bulk field. A key technical ingredient in this construction is the determination of the fourth heat kernel coefficient b6 for Lichnerowicz Laplacians on both 6D and 7D Einstein manifolds. These results allow to obtain, in addition to the already known type-A Weyl anomaly, two of the three independent type-B anomaly coefficients in terms of the third, say c_3 for instance. In order to gain access to c_3, and thus determine the four central charges independently, we further consider a generic non Ricci-flat Einstein boundary. However, in this case we find a mismatch between boundary and bulk computations for spins higher than two. We present a new tensor network algorithm for calculating the partition function of interacting quantum field theories in 2 dimensions. It is based on the Tensor Renormalization Group (TRG) protocol, adapted to operate entirely at the level of fields. This strategy was applied in Ref.[1] to the much simpler case of a free boson, obtaining an excellent performance. Here we include an arbitrary self-interaction and treat it in the context of perturbation theory. A real space analogue of the Wilsonian effective action and its expansion in Feynman graphs is proposed. Using a $\lambda \phi^4$ theory for benchmark, we evaluate the order $\lambda$ correction to the free energy. The results show a fast convergence with the bond dimension, implying that our algorithm captures well the effect of interaction on entanglement., Comment: 12+7 pages, 6 figures

The (Feynman) propagator $G(x_2,x_1)$ encodes the entire dynamics of a massive, free scalar field propagating in an arbitrary curved spacetime. The usual procedures for computing the propagator -- either as a time ordered correlator or from a partition function defined through a path integral -- requires introduction of a field $\phi(x)$ and its action functional $A[\phi(x)]$. An alternative, more geometrical, procedure is to define a propagator in terms of the world-line path integral which only uses curves, $x^i(s)$, defined on the manifold. I show how the world-line path integral can be reinterpreted as an ordinary integral by introducing the concept of effective number of quantum paths of a given length. Several manipulations of the world-line path integral become algebraically tractable in this approach. In particular, I derive an explicit expression for the propagator $G_{\rm QG}(x_2,x_1)$, which incorporates the quantum structure of spacetime through a zero-point-length, in terms of the standard propagator $G_{\rm std}(x_2,x_1)$, in an arbitrary curved spacetime. This approach also helps to clarify the interplay between the path integral amplitude and the path integral measure in determining the form of the propagator. We present a polynomial-time Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm for estimating the partition function of the antiferromagnetic Ising model on any line graph. The analysis of the algorithm exploits the "winding" technology devised by McQuillan [CoRR abs/1301.2880 (2013)] and developed by Huang, Lu and Zhang [Proc. 27th Symp. on Disc. Algorithms (SODA16), 514-527]. We show that exact computation of the partition function is #P-hard, even for line graphs, indicating that an approximation algorithm is the best that can be expected. Gauge theories with confining phases at low temperatures tend to deconfine at high temperatures. In some cases, for example in supersymmetric theories, confinement can persist for all temperatures provided the partition function includes a grading by (−1)F. When it is possible to define partition functions that smoothly interpolate between no grading and (−1)F grading, it is natural to ask if there are other choices of grading that have the same effect as (−1)F on confinement. We explore how this works for N=4 SYM on S1×S3 in the large N limit at both small and large coupling. We find evidence for a continuous range of grading parameters that preserve confinement for all temperatures at large coupling, while at small coupling only a discrete set of gradings preserves confinement.

We develop a non-perturbative method for calculating partition functions of strongly coupled quantum mechanical systems with interactions between subsystems described by a path integral of a dual system. The dual path integral is derived starting from non-interacting subsystems at zeroth order and then by introducing couplings of increasing complexity at each order of an iterative procedure. These orders of interactions play the role of a dual time and the full quantum partition function is expressed as a transition amplitude in the dual system. More precisely, it is expressed as a path integral from a deformation-operators dependent initial state at zero time/order to the inverse-temperature dependent final state at later time/order. We provide three examples of strongly coupled systems with first-order, second-order and higher-order interactions and discuss a possible emergence of space-time, quantum field theories and general relativity in context of the dual path integral., 20 pages, 4 figures, discussion of Ising model added, accepted for publication in European Physical Journal C

We consider supersymmetric gauge theories on $S^5$ with a negative Yang-Mills coupling in their large $N$ limits. Using localization we compute the partition functions and show that the pure ${\mathrm{SU}}(N)$ gauge theory descends to an ${\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{+N/2}\times {\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{-N/2}\times {\mathrm{SU}}(2)$ Chern-Simons gauge theory as the inverse 't Hooft coupling is taken to negative infinity for $N$ even. The Yang-Mills coupling of the ${\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{\pm N/2}$ is positive and infinite, while that on the ${\mathrm{SU}}(2)$ goes to zero. We also show that the odd $N$ case has somewhat different behavior. We then study the ${\mathrm{SU}}(N/2)_{N/2}$ pure Chern-Simons theory. While the eigenvalue density is only found numerically, we show that its width equals $1$ in units of the inverse sphere radius, which allows us to find the leading correction to the free energy when turning on the Yang-Mills term. We then consider ${\mathrm{USp}}(2N)$ theories with an antisymmetric hypermultiplet and $N_f, 34 pages, 11 figures

$\hat{Z}$-invariants, which can reconstruct the analytic continuation of the SU(2) Chern-Simons partition functions via Borel resummation, were discovered by GPV and have been conjectured to be a new homological invariant of 3-manifolds which can shed light onto the superconformal and topologically twisted index of 3d $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories proposed by GPPV. In particular, the resurgent analysis of $\hat{Z}$ has been fruitful in discovering analytic properties of the WRT invariants. The resurgent analysis of these $\hat{Z}$-invariants has been performed for the cases of $\Sigma(2,3,5),\ \Sigma(2,3,7)$ by GMP, $\Sigma(2,5,7)$ by Chun, and, more recently, some additional Seifert manifolds by Chung and Kucharski, independently. In this paper, we extend and generalize the resurgent analysis of $\hat{Z}$ on a family of Brieskorn homology spheres $\Sigma(2,3,6n+5)$ where $n\in\mathbb{Z}_+$ and $6n+5$ is a prime. By deriving $\hat{Z}$ for $\Sigma(2,3,6n+5)$ according to GPPV and Hikami, we provide a formula where one can quickly compute the non-perturbative contributions to the full analytic continuation of SU(2) Chern-Simons partition function., Comment: 18 pages; v2: minor revision, added references

Based on the results obtained in [Hucht, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 50, 065201 (2017)], we show that the partition function of the anisotropic square lattice Ising model on the $L \times M$ rectangle, with open boundary conditions in both directions, is given by the determinant of a $M/2 \times M/2$ Hankel matrix, that equivalently can be written as the Pfaffian of a skew-symmetric $M \times M$ Toeplitz matrix. The $M-1$ independent matrix elements of both matrices are Fourier coefficients of a certain symbol function, which is given by the ratio of two characteristic polynomials. These polynomials are associated to the different directions of the system, encode the respective boundary conditions, and are directly related through the symmetry of the considered Ising model under exchange of the two directions. In the tetrad formulation of gravity, the so-called simplicity constraints play a central role. They appear in the Hamiltonian analysis of the theory, and in the Lagrangian path integral when constructing the gravity partition function from topological BF theory. We develop here a systematic analysis of the corner symplectic structure encoding the symmetry algebra of gravity, and perform a thorough analysis of the simplicity constraints. Starting from a precursor phase space with Poincar\'e and Heisenberg symmetry, we obtain the corner phase space of BF theory by imposing kinematical constraints. This amounts to fixing the Heisenberg frame with a choice of position and spin operators. The simplicity constraints then further reduce the Poincar\'e symmetry of the BF phase space to a Lorentz subalgebra. This picture provides a particle-like description of (quantum) geometry: The internal normal plays the role of the four-momentum, the Barbero-Immirzi parameter that of the mass, the flux that of a relativistic position, and the frame that of a spin harmonic oscillator. Moreover, we show that the corner area element corresponds to the Poincar\'e spin Casimir. We achieve this central result by properly splitting, in the continuum, the corner simplicity constraints into first and second class parts. We construct the complete set of Dirac observables, which includes the generators of the local $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{C})$ subalgebra of Poincar\'e, and the components of the tangential corner metric satisfying an $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ algebra. We then present a preliminary analysis of the covariant and continuous irreducible representations of the infinite-dimensional corner algebra. Moreover, as an alternative path to quantization, we also introduce a regularization of the corner algebra and interpret this discrete setting in terms of an extended notion of twisted geometries., Comment: 71 pages, 1 figure

For a graph $G=(V,E)$, $k\in \mathbb{N}$, and a complex number $w$ the partition function of the univariate Potts model is defined as \[ {\bf Z}(G;k,w):=\sum_{\phi:V\to [k]}\prod_{\substack{uv\in E \\ \phi(u)=\phi(v)}}w, \] where $[k]:=\{1,\ldots,k\}$. In this paper we give zero-free regions for the partition function of the anti-ferromagnetic Potts model on bounded degree graphs. In particular we show that for any $\Delta\in \mathbb{N}$ and any $k\geq e\Delta+1$, there exists an open set $U$ in the complex plane that contains the interval $[0,1)$ such that ${\bf Z}(G;k,w)\neq 0$ for any $w\in U$ and any graph $G$ of maximum degree at most $\Delta$. (Here $e$ denotes the base of the natural logarithm.) For small values of $\Delta$ we are able to give better results. Consider an elliptic parameter $k$; we introduce a family of $Z^u$-Dirac operators $(\mathsf{K}(u))_{u\in\Re(\mathbb{T}(k))}$, relate them to the $Z$-massive Laplacian of [BdTR17b], and extend to the full $Z$-invariant case the results of Kenyon [Ken02] on discrete holomorphic and harmonic functions, which correspond to the case $k=0$. We prove, in a direct statistical mechanics way, how and why the $Z^u$-Dirac and $Z$-massive Laplacian operators appear in the $Z$-invariant Ising model, considering the case of infinite and finite isoradial graphs. More precisely, consider the dimer model on the Fisher graph ${\mathsf{G}}^{\scriptscriptstyle{\mathrm{F}}}$ arising from a $Z$-invariant Ising model. We express coefficients of the inverse Fisher Kasteleyn operator as a function of the inverse $Z^u$-Dirac operator and also as a function of the $Z$-massive Green function; in particular this proves a (massive) random walk representation of important observables of the Ising model. We prove that the squared partition function of the Ising model is equal, up to a constant, to the determinant of the $Z$-massive Laplacian operator with specific boundary conditions, the latter being the partition function of rooted spanning forests. To show these results, we relate the inverse Fisher Kasteleyn operator and that of the dimer model on the bipartite graph ${\mathsf{G}}^{\scriptscriptstyle{\mathrm{Q}}}$ arising from the XOR-Ising model, and we prove matrix identities between the Kasteleyn matrix of ${\mathsf{G}}^{\scriptscriptstyle{\mathrm{Q}}}$ and the $Z^u$-Dirac operator, that allow to reach inverse matrices as well as determinants., 103 pages, 33 figures. In recent years, the implications of the generalized (GUP) and extended (EUP) uncertainty principles on Maxwell–Boltzmann distribution have been widely investigated. However, at high energy regimes, the validity of Maxwell–Boltzmann statistics is under debate and instead, the Jüttner distribution is proposed as the distribution function in relativistic limit. Motivated by these considerations, in the present work, our aim is to study the effects of GUP and EUP on a system that obeys the Jüttner distribution. To achieve this goal, we address a method to get the distribution function by starting from the partition function and its relation with thermal energy which finally helps us in finding the corresponding energy density states.

We study the three-dimensional lens partition function for $\mathcal N=2$ supersymmetric gauge dual theories on $S^3/\mathbb{Z}_r$ by using the gauge/YBE correspondence. This correspondence relates supersymmetric gauge theories to exactly solvable models of statistical mechanics. The equality of partition functions for the three-dimensional supersymmetric dual theories can be written as an integral identity for hyperbolic hypergeometric functions. We obtain such an integral identity which can be written as the star-triangle relation for Ising type integrable models and as the integral pentagon identity. The latter represents the basic 2-3 Pachner move for triangulated 3-manifolds.
