Abstract

International audience; For more than a decade, it has been observed that network traffic exhibits long-range dependence and many models have been proposed relating this property to heavy-tailed flow durations. However, none of these models consider correlations at flow scale. Such correlations exist and will become more prominent in the future Internet with the emergence of flow-aware control mechanisms correlating a flow's transmission to its characteristics (size, duration, etc.). In this work, we study the impact of the correlation between flow rates and durations on the long-range dependence of aggregate traffic. Our results extend those of existing models by showing that two possible regimes of long-range dependence exist at different time scales. The long-range dependence in each regime can be stronger or weaker than standard predictions, depending on the conditional statistics between the flow rates and durations. In the independent case, our proposed model consistently reduces to former approaches. The pertinence of our model is validated on real web traffic traces, and its ability to accurately explain the Hurst parameter is validated on both web traces and numerical simulations.

Abstract

International audience; In today's Internet, a large part of the traffic is carried using the TCP transport protocol. Characterization of the variations of TCP traffic is thus a major challenge, both for resource provisioning and Quality of Service purposes. However, most existing models are limited to the prediction of the (almost-sure) mean TCP throughput and are unable to characterize deviations from this value. In this paper, we propose a method to describe the deviations of a long TCP flow's throughput from its almost-sure mean value. This method relies on an ergodic large-deviations result, which was recently proved to hold on almost every single realization for a large class of stochastic processes. Applying this result to a Markov chain modeling the congestion window's evolution of a long-lived TCP flow, we show that it is practically possible to quantify and to statistically bound the throughput's variations at different scales of interest for applications. Our Markov-chain model can take into account various network conditions and we demonstrate the accuracy of our method's prediction in different situations using simulations, experiments and real-world Internet traffic. In particular, in the classical case of Bernoulli losses, we demonstrate: i) the consistency of our method with the widely-used square-root formula predicting the almost-sure mean throughput, and ii) its ability to additionally predict finer properties reflecting the traffic variability at different scales.

Abstract

International audience; Data grid applications require often an access to infrastructures with high performance data movement facilities coordinated with computational resources. Other applications need interconnections of large scale instruments with HPC platforms. In these context, dynamic provisioning of customized computing and networking infrastructure as well as resource virtualization are appealing technologies. Therefore new models and tools must be studied and developed to allow users create and handle such on-demand virtual infrastructures within grid platforms or even within the Internet. This work presents VXDL, a language for virtual resources interconnection networks specification and modeling. Besides allowing end resources description, VXDL lets users describe the desirable virtual network topology, including virtual routers and timeline. In this paper we motivate and present the key features of our modeling language. We explore typical examples to demonstrates the expressiveness and the pertinence of it. Then we detail experimental results based on the execution of NAS benchmark on virtual infrastructures, conforming different VXDL specifications.

Abstract

After the seminal work by Taqqu et al. relating self-similarity to heavy-tailed distributions, a number of research articles verified that aggregated Internet traffic time series show self-similarity and that Internet attributes, like Web file sizes and flow lengths, were heavy-tailed. However, the validation of the theoretical prediction relating self-similarity and heavy tails remains unsatisfactorily addressed, being investigated using either numerical or network simulations, or from uncontrolled Web traffic data. Notably, this prediction has never been conclusively verified on real networks using controlled and stationary scenarios, prescribing specific heavy-tailed distributions, and estimating confidence intervals. With this goal in mind, we use the potential and facilities offered by the large-scale, deeply reconfigurable and fully controllable experimental Grid5000 instrument, combined with state-of-the-art estimators, to investigate the prediction's observability on real networks. To this end, we organize a large number of controlled traffic circulation sessions on a nationwide real network involving 200 independent hosts. We use a FPGA-based measurement system to collect the corresponding traffic at packet level. We then estimate both the self-similarity exponent of the aggregated time series and the heavy-tail index of flow-size distributions, independently. Not only do our results complement and validate, with a striking accuracy, some conclusions drawn from a series of pioneering studies, but they also bring in new insights on the controversial role of certain components of real networks.

Abstract

In the context of flow-aware networking, size-based (SB) scheduling policies have been shown to improve response times of small flows, without degrading the performance of large flows. But these differentiating policies are designed for Output-queued (OQ) switch architecture, which is known to have scalability issues. On the other hand, the buffered-crossbar (BX) switch architecture is currently being pursued as a potential next-generation scalable switch architecture. This work looks into the problem of performing SB scheduling in BX switches. In particular, the design goals, with respect to each output port, are (i) to transmit high-priority packet(s) as long as there is at least one present, and (ii) to respect the FIFO order among high-priority packets. In this direction, we propose a CICQ switches using a single PIFO queue at each crosspoint to schedule packets according to the priority assigned. pCICQ-1 switch uses a simple design to guarantee that packet-priorities are respected once they are in the crosspoint queues. But it does not maintain the FIFO order of high-priority packets, besides letting a bounded number low-priority packets to depart through an output, when there are one or more high-priority packets for the same output. To solve this, we propose an enhancement in pCICQ-2 switch, that uses a sequence controller to respect packet-priorities as well as arrival order for high-priority packets.

Abstract

International audience; With the convergence of computing and communication, and the expansion of cloud computing, new models and tools are needed to allow users to define, create, and exploit on-demand virtual infras- tructures within wide area distributed environments. Optimally design- ing customized virtual execution-infrastructure and executing them on a physical substrate remains a complex problem. This paper presents the VXDL language, a language for specifying and describing virtual infras- tructures and the HIPerNET framework to manage them. Based on the example of a specific biomedical application and workflow engine, this paper illustrates how VXDL enables to specify different customized vir- tual infrastructures and the HIPerNET framework to execute them on a distributed substrate. The paper presents experiments of the deploy- ment and execution of this application on different virtual infrastructures managed by our HIPerNet system. All the experiments are performed on the Grid'5000 testbed substrate.

Abstract

International audience; In the context of network traffic analysis, we address the problem of estimating the tail index of flow (or more generally of any group) size distribution from the observation of a sampled population of packets (individuals). We give an exhaustive bibliography of the existing methods and show the relations between them. The main contribution of this work is then to propose a new method to estimate the tail index from sampled data, based on the resolution of the maximum likelihood problem. To assess the performance of our method, we present a full performance evaluation based on numerical simulations, and also on a real traffic trace corresponding to internet traffic recently acquired.

Abstract

International audience; With the expansion and the convergence of computing and communication, the dynamic provisioning of customized pro- cessing and networking infrastructures as well as resource virtualization are appealing concepts and technologies. There- fore, new models and tools are needed to allow users to create, trust and exploit such on-demand virtual infrastruc- tures within wide area distributed environments. This pa- per proposes to combine network and system virtualization with cryptographic identification and SPKI/HIP principles to help the user communities to build and share their own re- source reservoirs. These ideas are implemented in the HIPer- Net framework enabling the creation and the management of customized confined execution environments in a large scale context. Based on the example of biomedical applications, the paper focuses on the security model of the HIPerNet system and develops the key aspects of our distributed se- curity approach. Then the paper discusses and illustrates how HIPerNet solutions fulfill the security requirements of applications through different scenarios.

Abstract

International audience; The phenomenal increase in network capacity to hundreds and thousands of Gbits/s in the core as well as Gbits/s at the access, is soon to witness stupendous amounts of packets that have to be processed and switched at amplifying line rates. Looking into the future, we address the need for the integration of packets of larger size, called XLFrames (XLFs), into the future Internet framework. This paper analyses the effects of introducing XLFs in a network that has both packets and XLFs. We evaluate the gains in terms of processing power and throughput. As we observe that XLFs have an impact on loss rate and fairness, we study how, with minimal efforts at routers while keeping the existing protocols (TCP/UDP, IP), XLFs may integrate in the current scenario.

Abstract

International audience; Combining end-host, server and router virtualization could offer isolated and malleable virtual networks of different types, owners and protocols, all sharing one physical infrastructure. However, the virtualization of data plane may lead to performance degradation and indeterminism. These arise not only due to additional processing, but also from the sharing of physical resources like memory, CPU and network devices. This paper analyses virtualization from the data plane perspective. We explore the resulting network performance in terms of throughput, packet loss and latency between virtual machines, and also the correspondig CPU cost. The virtual machines act as senders or receivers, or as software routers forwarding traffic between two interfaces in the context of Xen. Our results show that the impact of virtualization on network performance is getting smaller with the successive Xen versions, making this approach a promising solution for data plane virtualization.

Abstract

International audience; Scheduling flows in the Internet has sprouted much interest in the research community leading to the development of many queueing models, capitalizing on the heavy-tail property of flow size distribution. Theoretical studies have shown that 'size-based' schedulers improve the delay of small flows without almost no performance degradation to large flows. On the practical side, the issues in taking such schedulers to implementation have hardly been studied. This work looks into practical aspects of making size-based scheduling feasible in future Internet. In this context, we propose a flow scheduler architecture comprising three modules -- Size-based scheduling, Threshold-based sampling and Knockout buffer policy -- for improving the performance of flows in the Internet. Unlike earlier works, we analyze the performance using five different performance metrics, and through extensive simulations show the goodness of this architecture.

Abstract

International audience; Emerging IT service providers that aim at delivering supercomputing power available to the masses over the Internet rely on high-performance IT resources interconnected with ultra-high-performance optical networks. To adjust the provisioning of the resources to end-user demand variations, new infrastructure capabilities have to be supported. These capabilities have to take into account the business requirements of telecom networks. This paper proposes a service framework to offer Internet service providers dynamic access to extensible virtual private execution infrastructures, through on-demand and in-advance bandwidth and resource reservation services. This virtual infrastructure service concept is being studied in the CARRIOCAS project and implemented thanks to the scheduling, reconfiguration, and virtualization (SRV) component. This entity handles the service requests, aggregates them, and triggers the provisioning of different types of resources accordingly. We propose to adapt to envisioned heterogeneous needs by multiplexing rigid and flexible requests as well as coarse or fine demands. The goal is to optimize both resource provisioning and utility functions. Considering the options of advanced network bandwidth reservations and allocations, the optimization problem is formulated. The impacts of the malleability factor are studied by simulation to assess the gain.

International audience; In grid networks, distributed resources, computing or storage elements as well as scientific instruments are interconnected to support computing-intensive and data-intensive applications. To facilitate the efficient scheduling of these resources,wepropose to manage the movements of massive data set between them. This paper formulates the bulk data transfer scheduling problem and presents an optimal solution to minimize the network congestion factor of a dedicated network or an isolated traffic class. The solution satisfying individual flows' time and volume constraints can be found in polynomial time and expressed as a set of multi-interval bandwidth allocation profiles. To ensure a large-scale deployment of this approach, we propose, for the data plane, a combination of a bandwidth profile enforcement mechanism with traditional transport protocols. The paper examines several solutions for implementing such a mechanism in a Linux kernel. The experimental evaluation shows that packet pacing performed at IP level offers a simple yet valuable and TCP-compatible solution for accurate bandwidth profile enforcement at very high speed.

Abstract

Deadline-driven bulk data transfers frequently occur in overlay networks running data-intensive, dis- tributed workflow applications, such as grid and cloud envi- ronments. What distinguishes such transfers from other In- ternet traffic is that overlay nodes should cooperate towards the common goal of delivering all inter-dependent data timely, rather than follow individual, selfish goals. For such scenarios, we propose scheduling transfers in overlays in a globally optimal manner with respect to minimizing overall network congestion. Our optimization jointly addresses routing of transfers within the overlay and the time-domain scheduling of transfer bandwidths. We formally define and address the associated problem, the Bulk Data Routing and Transfer(BDRT) and present a linear programming-based solution to it, optimal in both routing and time domains. We additionally explore alternative approaches based on heuristic routing strategies, both oblivious and time-domain optimized. We evaluate these solutions via both PlanetLab trace-driven simulations and Internet transfer experiments, on the Intrigger wide-area grid and PlanetLab. Evaluation shows that our approach finds optimal solutions, based on estimations of job arrival times, deadlines and transfer volumes. Abstract

International audience; Internet server clustering has been widely used by operators to improve the scalability and the availability of the rendered services under heavy load condition. Load balancing is a well known mean to optimize the usage of the cluster available resources by fairly allocating them to the offered network traffic. Most state-of-the-art research advocate either session oblivious or coarse grained session aware load balancing architectures. While guaranteeing session integrity, the coarse grained session awareness leads to an unfair allocation of the cluster resources. In this work, we advocate an innovative fine grained session aware load balancing architecture of an offered IP traffic to a cluster of Internet servers. The proposed architecture aims to maximize the cluster useful throughput in terms of completed sessions per unit of time. It provides high availability capabilities in case of failure of the legitimate entry point to the cluster. Finally, it is fully client transparent and is open to adapt to any multiple-flow based NGN service such as voice over IP or video streaming.

Abstract

In high performance distributed computing applications, data movements havedemanding performance requirements such as reliable and predictable delivery.Predicting the throughput of large transfers is very difficult in paths thatare heavily loaded with just a few big flows. This report explores how currenthigh speed transport protocols behave and may improve transfer time predictabilityof gigabits of data among endpoints in a range of conditions. In afully controlled long distance 10 Gbps network testbed, we compare severalTCP variants behaviour in presence of diverse congestion level and reversetraffic situations. We show that these factors have a very strong impact ontransfer time predictability of several transport protocols.; Dans les applications hautes performances de calcul distribué, les mouvements de données doivent fournir des garanties de performances, comme de la distribution fiable et prévisible. Prévoir le débit de larges transferts est difficile sur les chemins réseaux qui sont lourdement chargés par quelques gros flux.Ce rapport explore la façon dont les protocoles de transport haut débit se comportent et peuvent améliorer la prédictibilité des temps de transferts de gigaoctetsde données entre des nœuds d’extrémité dans un éventail de conditions.Dans un environnement de test complètement contrôlé avec un réseau longue distance à 10 Gbps, nous comparons le comportement de plusieurs variantes de TCP en présence de différents niveaux de congestion et trafic sur le chemin retour. Nous montrons que ces facteurs ont un impact très important sur la prédictibilité du temps de transfert pour plusieurs protocoles de transport.

Abstract

International audience; Large scale distributed systems such as Grids are difficult to study from theoretical models and simulators only. Most Grids deployed at large scale are production platforms that are inappropriate research tools because of their limited reconfiguration, control and monitoring capabilities. In this paper, we present Grid'5000, a 5000 CPU nation-wide infrastructure for research in Grid computing. Grid'5000 is designed to provide a scientific tool for computer scientists similar to the large-scale instruments used by physicists, astronomers, and biologists. We describe the motivations, design considerations, architecture, control, and monitoring infrastructure of this experimental platform. We present configuration examples and performance results for the reconfiguration subsystem.

Abstract

While grid computing reaches further to geographically separated clusters, data warehouses, and disks, it poses demanding requirements on end-to-end performance guarantee. Its pre-defined destinations and service criteria ease the performance control; however, expensive resources and equipments used by grid applications determine that optimal resource sharing, especially at network access points, is critical. From the resource reservation perspective, this article looks at communication resources shared by grid sites. Two resource request scenarios have been identified, aiming at optimizing the request accept rate and resource utilization. The optimization problems, proven NP-complete, are then solved by heuristic algorithms. Simulation results, aside from showing satisfying results, illustrate the pros and cons of each algorithm.; Le calcul distribué sur la grille requiert l’utilisation de clusters et de moyens de stockage distribués géographiquement, ce qui rend toute garantie de performance difficile à obtenir entre chacun des ces éléments. L’existence de chemins et de critères de services prédéfinis facilite quelque peu le contrôle de performance ; cependant, le coût d’utilisation des équipements et des ressources utilisés par les applications distribuées sur une telle grille fait que l’optimisation du partage de ressources est essentielle, particulièrement aux points d’accès du réseau. Nous nous intéressons ici au partage des ressources de communication par les différents sites de la grille de calcul, pour permettre la réservation de ressources. Nous isolons deux scénarios pour les requêtes, et cherchons à maximiser le taux d’acceptation des différentes requêtes ainsi que le taux d’utilisation des ressources de communication. Nous montrons que les différents problèmes d’optimisation sont NP-complets, et proposons des heuristiques pour les résoudre. Nous comparons les performances de ces différentes heuristiques par simulation.

Abstract

International audience; Grids rely on a complex interconnection of IP domains that may exhibit changing performance characteristics and may offer different quality of service (QoS) facilities. We examine the case of a biomedical application distributed over a grid and show it may suffer from uncontrolled communication performance. Then we present the QoSINUS service that dynamically allocates the network resources to Grid flows in order to match their specific QoS requirements under different load conditions. The aim of this approach is to optimize the end to end performances the heterogeneous mix of grid flows get from the network to enhance the individual application's performance as well as the overall grid infrastructure performance and utilization level. The QoSINUS service is based on the programmable network approach that offers flexibility, evolutivity and enables dynamic adaptation to network load variations. Finally, results of QoSINUS experiments conducted in the context of the eToile french grid testbed based on the high speed and DiffServ capable research network infrastructure, VTHD, are presented.

Abstract

International audience; Grid computing is a promising way to aggregate geographically distant machines and to allow them to work together to solve large problems. After studying Grid network requirements, we observe that the network must take part of the Grid computing session to provide intelligent adaptative transport of Grid data streams. By proposing new intelligent dynamic services, active network can be the perfect companion to easily and efficiently deploy and maintain Grid environments and applications. This paper presents the Active Grid Architecture (A-Grid) which focus on active networks adaptation for supporting Grid environments and applications. We focus the benefit of active networking for the grid on three aspects: High performance and dynamic active services, Active Reliable Multicast, and Active Quality of Service. \textcopyright Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2001.

Abstract

In today's context of rapid expansion of the Internet, deep understanding of the statistical properties of network traffic is essential for Internet Service Providers to offer users the best "Quality of Service" possible. A major breakthrough in that direction was the discovery in 1993 of the self-similarity of network traffic, followed up by the ON/OFF model proposed in 1997 that posits the heavy-tailness of flow-size distributions as a plausible origin of this property. While of great interest, such mathematical models always rely on necessary simplifying assumptions which can limit their practical applicability to real networks, in particular due to the complexity of the TCP protocol. In this thesis, we use a hybrid approach based on the combination of real traffic traces, controlled experiments and theoretical developments to address some open questions concerning network traffic properties and their impact on QoS. Our experiments are based on a large-scale controllable testbed and an efficient traffic capture system. Then, we first address issues related to aggregate network traffic: we extend previous long-range dependent models and we propose an estimator of the flow-size distribution's tail index under sampling. We also perform an empirical study of the impact of long-range dependence and heavy-tails on QoS. Finally, we turn to the packet-level traffic of one TCP source and show, using a large-deviation principle, that it can be finely characterized by a multifractal structure intimately related to the control mechanism AIMD, and naturally reproduced by Markov models.; Dans le contexte actuel d'expansion rapide de l'Internet, la compréhension profonde des propriétés statistiques du trafic réseau est essentielle pour que les fournisseurs d'accès puisse offrir la meilleure "Qualité de Service" possible aux utilisateurs. Une avancée majeure dans cette direction a été la découverte en 1993 de l'auto-similarité du trafic, suivie en 1997 par le modèle ON/OFF qui interprète cette propriété par les tailles de fichiers à queue lourde. Bien qu'ils soient d'un grand intérêt, de tels modèles mathématiques s'appuient nécessairement sur des hypothèses simplificatrices qui peuvent en limiter l'applicabilité en situation réelle, en particulier du fait de la complexité du protocole TCP. Dans cette thèse, nous utilisons une approche hybride, basée sur la combinaison de traces de trafic réelles, d'expériences contrôlées et de modèles théoriques, pour aborder certaines questions ouvertes sur le trafic réseau et la Qualité de Service. Nos expériences utilisent une plate-forme contrôlable à grande échelle et un système performant de capture du trafic. Nous abordons dans un premier temps des questions liées au trafic agrégé : nous étendons les modèles existants de longue mémoire et nous proposons un estimateur du paramètre de queue lourde sous échantillonnage. Nous étudions ensuite empiriquement l'impact de la longue mémoire et des queues lourdes sur la Qualité de Service. Nous nous tournons enfin vers le trafic d'une seule source TCP et montrons, à l'aide d'un principe de grandes déviations, qu'il peut être finement caractérisé par une structure multifractale reliée au mécanisme de contrôle AIMD, et naturellement reproduite par des modèles markoviens.

Abstract

Over the last twenty years, there has been a large increase both in terms of number of interconnected hosts and in terms of link capacities. At the beginning of the ARPANET in 1969, more than forty years ago, there were four nodes, all located in the USA and connected with a link speed of 50 kilobits per second. In 1986, when the NSFNET, the network of the US universities, was created, the number of hosts was over a few thousands, but the backbone links' speeds were still of 56 kilobits per second. From that moment on, the growth in number of interconnected hosts and in link capacity has been exponential, thanks to the success of popular applications like the WWW and technological advances like SDH, SONET or DWDM in the fiber optics networks domain or like ATM and the DSL technologies derived from it. The current-day Internet interconnects billions of users (half a billion hosts in late 2006) all around the world, has a cumulated core links speed over several Terabits per second and access links up to 10 Gbps. Another fundamental technological change is also that nowadays, access links start having speeds in the same order of magnitude as the backbone link's speed. For instance, it is common to find data centers where the nodes are interconnected with 1 Gbps or 10 Gbps links and have a connection to the outside with a similar speed. This change is important as only a few connections would be necessary to cause saturation in the backbone. This situation is likely to spread as DSL technologies are gradually replaced by Fiber-To-The-Home (FTTH). 5 Mbps connections aggregated on OC48 (2.5 Gbps) links will then be replaced by 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps links aggregated over 10 Gbps links or less depending on the actual optical technology used in the access network. In such environments, high congestion levels might not be rare and might cause disruption to high-end applications. Lots of promising applications have emerged and would benefit from this increase in capacity like Video On Demand (VoD) that allows end-users to host their own high-definition movie entertainment whenever they want or scientific experiments that gather huge volumes of data (e.g. LHC) that need to be transported to computational facilities scattered all around the globe. The interaction of users with remote objects through the use of communication networks, also known as Telepresence, starts to have a paramount role in a variety of domains ranging from medical or military applications to space exploration. But these applications are still built on top of the very successful softwares or protocols like TCP and IP that were designed a long time ago for a context of low-speed networks. Their design was dictated by one goal: providing a robust and fair interconnection between existing networks. Now put in a high-speed networks context, these extremely robust and scalable protocols are still able to deliver but they are starting to show their limits in terms of performance, security, functionalities and flexibility. The most typical example is the quasi ``one-size-fits-all'' TCP protocol at the transport layer. This protocol was designed to provide a connection-oriented ``virtual circuit'' service for applications like remote login or file transfer. These two applications have two nearly conflicting sets of requirements: the first one needs a low delay and has low requirements for bandwidth while the second one mostly requires high bandwidth. Both require reliable transmissions. TCP was designed as a ``one-size-fits-all'' protocol but as the capacity of the links increased in the wired networks, as the intrinsic characteristics changed for the wireless networks and as the application requirements diverged, TCP is no longer able to scale up in performance. Multiple solutions have been proposed over time, but today's protocol designers have a large disadvantage over those forty years ago: making four similar computers interact is not exactly the same thing as designing a communicating software or protocol fit to be used by billions of vastly heterogeneous computers. Introducing change in a system of such a scale is problematic: it makes it very improbable to make a complete overnight migration of every element in the network, especially if it requires an upgrade of all physical equipments. Thus the change can only be gradual and as software updates in the end-hosts at the very edge of the networks, as it would be easier than changing core hardware elements. The fear to see congestion collapse events in the Internet as in the late 80s is coming back. Caused by too much traffic on crowded links leading to poor performance for everybody over long periods of time, it had advocated for the introduction of a congestion control mechanism in the transport protocol. If the new solutions are behaving selfishly when sharing the common resources (the links), this fear is grounded. It is then necessary to provide ways to assert if a given solution has the appropriate properties before allowing it to roam freely over a large-scale shared system., Au cours des vingt dernières années, c'est une évolution très rapide non seulement en termes de nombre d'éléments inter-connectés mais surtout en termes de capacités des liens qui a pu être constatée au sein des réseaux de communications. A la création du réseau ARPANET en 1969, il y a plus de quarante ans, quatre ordinateurs, tous situés aux États-Unis étaient connectés avec des liens avec un débit de 50 kilobits par seconde. En 1986, à la création du réseau des universités américaines, le NSFNET, le nombre de machines dépassait déjà plusieurs milliers mais le débit des liens de coeur était encore de 56 kilobits par seconde. A partir de ce moment, la croissance à la fois en termes de nombre d'éléments inter-connectés et de capacités des liens a été exponentielle, grâce au succès de nouvelles applications populaires comme le WWW ou les avancées technologiques comme SDH, SONET ou DWDM dans le domaine des réseaux de fibres optiques et ATM et les protocoles DSL qui en dérivent. L'Internet actuel interconnecte des milliards d'utilisateurs (un demi-milliard de machines fin 2006) répartis partout dans le monde, pouvant utiliser des liens de coeur dont les débits cumulés sont supérieurs à plusieurs Térabits par seconde et dont les liens d'accès peuvent atteindre jusqu'à 10 Gigabits par seconde. Une autre évolution technologique fondamentale est que, aujourd'hui, certains liens d'accès ont des débits du même ordre de grandeur que les débits des liens de coeur auxquels ils sont connectés. Il est aujourd'hui courant de trouver des fermes de serveurs où les noeuds sont interconnectés avec des liens à 1 Gbps ou 10 Gbps et qui ont une connexion vers l'extérieur avec un débit similaire. Cette modification est importante car désormais quelques connexions suffisent à provoquer une saturation des liens de coeur. Cette situation risque d'empirer au fur et à mesure du remplacement des technologies DSL par la Fibre-Jusqu'à-La-Maison (FTTH). Des connexions à 5 Mbps agrégées sur des liens OC48 (2.5 Gbps) vont alors être remplacées par des connexions à 100 Mbps, voire 1 Gbps, agrégées sur des liens à 10 Gbps, voire moins suivant la technologie optique utilisée sur le réseau d'accès. Il est fort probable que dans de tels environnements des niveaux de congestion élevés ne soient pas rares, engendrant des perturbations pour de nombreuses applications. Un grand nombre d'applications prometteuses ont émergé et pourraient bénéficier de capacités de communication accrues, comme par exemple la Vidéo-à-la-Demande (VoD) qui permet aux utilisateurs de regarder des films en haute définition chez eux quand ils le désirent ou les expériences scientifiques générant des quantités massives de données (comme le LHC) qui doivent être acheminées dans des centres de calcul répartis tout autour du globe. L'interaction d'utilisateurs avec des objets distants via un réseau de communication ou Téléprésence commence également à prendre un rôle prépondérant dans de nombreux domaines allant du médical au militaire en passant par l'exploration spatiale. Mais ces applications sont encore construites au dessus de logiciels ou de protocoles à succès comme TCP et IP, conçus il y a longtemps pour un contexte de réseaux bas-débit. Le conception était dirigé par un but principal: fournir une interconnexion robuste entre des réseaux existants. Plongés maintenant dans un contexte de réseaux très haut-débit, ces protocoles extrêmement robustes et capables de passer à l'échelle sont toujours en activité mais commencent à montrer leurs limites en termes de performance, sécurité, fonctionnalités et flexibilité. L'exemple le plus typique est TCP au niveau de la couche de transport. TCP a été conçu comme un protocole ``à tout faire'' mais à mesure que la capacité des liens augmente dans les réseaux fixes, que les caractéristiques intrinsèques changent pour les réseaux sans fils et que les besoins des applications divergent, TCP n'est plus capable de permettre une utilisation performante pour tous des capacités nominales des liens du réseau. De nombreuses solutions ont été proposées, mais les concepteurs de protocoles d'aujourd'hui ont un large désavantage par rapport à ceux d'il y a quarante ans. Faire fonctionner ensemble quatre machines identiques n'est pas exactement pareil que concevoir un logiciel de communication ou protocole susceptible d'être utilisé entre des milliards de machines hétérogènes. Apporter du changement dans un système d'une telle ampleur est problématique: il n'est pas possible d'envisager une migration massive du jour au lendemain surtout si des équipements physiques sont concernés. Le changement ne peut être que graduel et via des mises à jour logicielles dans les hôtes d'extrémité. La peur d'un effondrement de l'Internet dû à la congestion comme à la fin des années 80 resurgit. Causés par une surabondance de trafic réseau sur des liens saturés, ces troubles ont mis en avant la nécessité d'introduire un mécanisme de contrôle de congestion dans les protocoles de transport. Si les nouvelles solutions introduites se comportent de façon égoïste quand elles partagent une ressource commune (un lien), alors cette peur est fondée. Il est donc nécessaire de fournir des moyens de vérifier si une solution donnée possède les propriétés adéquates avant de l'introduire dans un système partagé à très large échelle.
