Semiconductor nanocrystals (NCs) can function as efficient gain materials with chemical versatility because of their surface ligands. Because the properties of NCs in solution are sensitive to ligand–environment interactions, local chemical changes can result in changes in the optical response. However, amplification of the optical response is technically challenging because of colloidal instability at NC concentrations needed for sufficient gain to overcome losses. This paper demonstrates liquid lasing from plasmonic lattice cavities integrated with ligand-engineered CdZnS/ZnS NCs dispersed in toluene and water. By taking advantage of calcium ion-induced aggregation of NCs in aqueous solutions, we show how lasing threshold can be used as a transduction signal for ion detection. Our work highlights how NC solutions and plasmonic lattices with open cavity architectures can serve as a biosensing platform for lab-on-chip devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: The mandibular canal houses the nerve, artery and vein, providing sensory innervation to the lower teeth and tissues. Understanding its variations is essential in dental practice to avoid nerve injuries during anaesthesia and surgeries. Dentists use imaging techniques such as panoramic X-rays and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) to visualise the canal, with CBCT offering detailed Three-dimensional images to assist in accurate treatment planning. The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of mandibular canal variations using CBCT, focusing on their occurrence by side, gender and age group. Materials and Methods: This study included 100 subjects aged 21–60, divided into four age groups of 25 each. CBCT scans were used to assess mandibular canal variations. Data were analysed with the Chi-square test, using a significance threshold of P < 0.05. Results: Out of 100 subjects, 75% had normal mandibular canals and 25% had accessory canals, with a higher prevalence in males, though the difference was not statistically significant (P = 0.10). The accessory canals were more common on the right side and in the 21–30 age group, with males exhibiting more bifid and trifid variations. Conclusion: The prevalence of accessory mandibular canals was seen more in males and on the right side. CBCT seems to be a suitable tool for evaluating bifid and trifid canals. Objective: Rare disease. Background: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis (EPS) is a life-threatening complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). It is characterized by a fibrous membrane partially or totally encasing the small bowel and is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction (SBO). Here we present a case of a young woman with a history of PD presenting with SBO due to EPS. Case Report: A 37-year-old woman with end-stage renal disease secondary to uncontrolled hypertension previously on PD presented to the emergency department for evaluation of 1 week of intractable nausea and vomiting associated with diffuse abdominal pain. Computed tomography of the abdomen showed findings consistent with a fibrous membrane encapsulating the small bowel and a small bowel follow-through revealed an SBO. She was diagnosed with secondary stage 3 EPS due to PD. She was started on prednisone and tamoxifen with quick resolution of her symptoms. Unfortunately, due to numerous recurrent SBOs, she is now being evaluated for surgical treatment options. Conclusions: This report has presented a case of EPS, a rare complication of PD, which requires early diagnosis and management to prevent potentially fatal consequences. Management should focus on treating the underlying condition, optimizing nutrition, and using corticosteroids or tamoxifen (alone or in combination) depending on disease state and contraindications, with the aim of reducing recurrent SBOs. In this work, thin films of ruthenium-doped and cerium-doped yttrium iron garnet were deposited on silicon using solgel chemistry. Doped YIG could be produced in phase pure form up to a precursor stoichiometry of Y3Ru0.1Fe4.9O12 and Ce0.7Y2.3Fe5O12. Both dopants significantly increase the coercivity and anisotropy field of the materials either due to domain wall pinning or increased spin–orbit coupling from the dopant. To delineate these two effects, the dynamic magnetic properties were studied using strip line ferromagnetic resonance (FMR). The FMR linewidth was separated into intrinsic loss and inhomogeneous line broadening. Inhomogeneous line broadening was found to dominate the magnetic losses in all the films likely due to magnon scattering off grain boundaries, but the Gilbert damping remained fairly low. By comparing the two dopants, it was found that Gilbert damping increased more in Ce:YIG films than in Ru:YIG films. This finding was corroborated by changes in the anisotropy field of the films, indicating a larger contribution from spin–orbit coupling from cerium than from ruthenium. Surprisingly, while magnetic loss globally increased with higher substitution, adding a small amount of dopant actually reduced the inhomogeneous line broadening in both sets of films. This was corroborated by crystallite size. The damping in Ru:YIG also decreased with a small amount of the dopant, which has been predicted by Kittel for doped garnets. Thus, it follows that there is an ideal doping regime where solgel YIG can be doped at low levels without increasing magnetic loss. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are among the most commonly prescribed medications. Recently, PPI use has been linked to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and cardiovascular events. Our study aimed to investigate the relationship between PPI use and the incidence of chronic kidney disease using a systematic review and meta-analysis. Methods: We performed a comprehensive literature search in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from their inception until March 2024 for relevant studies. We compared outcomes between patients using PPIs, those not using PPIs, and those using histamine-2 receptor antagonists (H2RAs). Endpoints were pooled using the DerSimonian-and-Laird random-effects model as the hazard ratio (HR) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: Our analysis included twelve studies with a total of 700,125 participants (286,488 on PPIs, 373,848 not on PPIs, and 39,789 on H2RAs), with follow-up periods ranging from three months to 14 years. The current meta-analysis revealed that PPI use is associated with a statistically significant increased risk of incident CKD (HR: 1.26, 95% CI: 1.16–1.38, p < 0.001) compared with non-users. Moreover, the risk of incident CKD is significantly higher in patients with PPI use compared to H2RA use (HR: 1.34, 95% CI: 1.13–1.59, p < 0.001). The results remained unchanged in terms of magnitude and direction after a leave-one-out analysis for both outcomes. Conclusions: Our multifaceted analysis showed that PPI use was associated with a higher incidence of CKD when compared to non-PPI use and H2RA use, respectively. These findings advocate for heightened vigilance and judicious use of long-term PPIs. Further large prospective longitudinal studies are warranted to validate these observations. Orbital tuberculosis is a manifestation of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis that is challenging to diagnose and treat. Here, we describe the pivotal role of serial imaging in the diagnosis and treatment of orbital tuberculosis. A 28-year-old male presented with recurrent right upper eyelid swelling and a supraduction deficit associated with a firm painless orbital mass, seen on initial computed tomography to be an extensive superomedial lesion producing mass effect. Biopsy revealed a tuberculosis-like granulomatous inflammation, which, coupled with a positive QuantiFERON gold test, led to empiric anti-tuberculin treatment. Serial radiologic imaging following initiation of treatment showed progressive reduction in mass size, supporting the diagnosis and determining the length of treatment. This rare case demonstrates the utility of serial radiologic exams in the diagnosis and treatment of orbital tuberculosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nanotechnology and nanoparticles have gained massive attention in the scientific community in recent years due to their valuable properties. Among various AgNPs synthesis methods, microbial approaches offer distinct advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, and eco-friendliness. In the present research work, investigators have synthesized three different types of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), namely AgNPs-K, AgNPs-M, and AgNPs-E, by using Klebsiella pneumoniae (MBC34), Micrococcus luteus (MBC23), and Enterobacter aerogenes (MBX6), respectively. The morphological, chemical, and elemental features of the synthesized AgNPs were analyzed by using UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). UV-Vis absorbance peaks were obtained at 475, 428, and 503 nm for AgNPs-K, AgNPs-M, and AgNPs-E, respectively. The XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of the synthesized AgNPs, having peaks at 26.2°, 32.1°, and 47.2°. At the same time, the FTIR showed bands at 599, 963, 1,693, 2,299, 2,891, and 3,780 cm−1 for all the types of AgNPs indicating the presence of bacterial biomolecules with the developed AgNPs. The size and morphology of the AgNPs varied from 10 nm to several microns and exhibited spherical to porous sheets-like structures. The percentage of Ag varied from 37.8% (wt.%) to 61.6%, i.e., highest in AgNPs-K and lowest in AgNPs-M. Furthermore, the synthesized AgNPs exhibited potential for environmental remediation, with AgNPs-M exhibiting the highest removal efficiency (19.24% at 120 min) for methyl orange dye in simulated wastewater. Further, all three types of AgNPs were evaluated for the removal of methyl orange dye from the simulated wastewater, where the highest dye removal percentage was 19.24% at 120 min by AgNPs-M. Antibacterial potential of the synthesized AgNPs assessment against both Gram-positive (GPB) Bacillus subtilis (MBC23), B. cereus (MBC24), and Gram-negative bacteria Enterococcus faecalis (MBP13) revealed promising results, with AgNPs-M, exhibiting the largest zone of inhibition (12 mm) against GPB B. megaterium. Such investigation exhibits the potential of the bacteria for the synthesis of AgNPs with diverse morphology and potential applications in environmental remediation and antibacterial therapy-based synthesis of AgNPs. Background: Work relative value units (wRVUs) are an intricate component of physician reimbursement determination in the United States. This paper assesses whether wRVUs appropriately consider operative time in hand surgery. Methods: The 50 most common single Current Procedural Terminology code hand surgery cases were queried from the 2013 to 2018 National Surgical Quality Improvement Program database. The average assigned wRVUs and median operative times were calculated for each CPT. Linear regressions were calculated between operative time, wRVUs, and wRVUs per hour. Cases deviating the most from the expected wRVUs based on operative time were identified. Results: In all, 46 800 cases comprising the top 50 most common hand surgery procedures were identified. Among these cases, the median (range) assigned operative time was 62 minutes (18-110), wRVUs were 7.5 (3.5-18.0), and wRVUs per hour was 8.3 (4.9-14.2). There was a positive linear correlation between operative time and wRVUs (R 2 = 0.60). Each additional operative hour was associated with an additional 6.3 wRVUs (P <.001). Based on this relationship, the assigned wRVUs for included cases ranged from 59.7% to 172.6% of expected. There was a weak negative relationship between wRVUs per hour and operative time (R 2 = 0.25). Cases shorter than 1 hour had more wRVUs per hour than those longer than 1 hour (10.0 vs. 8.1, P =.003). However, this relationship disappeared when considering case turnover. Conclusion: This study suggests a moderately strong positive correlation between wRVUs and operative time in hand surgery. Yet, numerous outliers from this trend exist, suggesting some discrepancies in reimbursement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
