Organic semiconductors are increasingly being decorated with hydrophilic solubilising chains to create materials that can function as mixed ionic–electronic conductors, which are promising candidates for interfacing biological systems with organic electronics. While numerous organic semiconductors, including p- and n-type materials, small molecules and polymers, have been successfully tailored to encompass mixed conduction properties, common to all these systems is that they have been semicrystalline materials. Here, we explore how side chain engineering in the nano-crystalline indacenodithiophene-co-benzothiadiazole (IDTBT) polymer can be used to instil ionic transport properties and how this in turn influences the electronic transport properties. This allows us to ultimately assess the mixed ionic–electronic transport properties of these new IDTBT polymers using the organic electrochemical transistor as the testing platform. Using a complementary experimental and computational approach, we find that polar IDTBT derivatives can be infiltrated by water and solvated ions, they can be electrochemically doped efficiently in aqueous electrolyte with fast doping kinetics, and upon aqueous swelling there is no deterioration of the close interchain contacts that are vital for efficient charge transport in the IDTBT system. Despite these promising attributes, mixed ionic–electronic charge transport properties are surprisingly poor in all the polar IDTBT derivatives. Albeit a "negative" result, this finding clearly contradicts established side chain engineering rules for mixed ionic–electronic conductors, which motivated our continued investigation of this system. We eventually find this anomalous behaviour to be caused by increasing energetic disorder in the polymers with increasing polar side chain content. We have investigated computationally how the polar side chain motifs contribute to this detrimental energetic inhomogeneity and ultimately use the learnings to propose new molecular design criteria for side chains that can facilitate ion transport without impeding electronic transport. The first Telluride Science meeting (formerly TSRC) on organic mixed ionic and electronic conductors (OMIECs), Oct 3–7, 2022, brought together researchers across the field to understand the fundamental processes and identify out-standing questions related to this exciting class of materials. OMIECs are organic materials that promote the transport of mobile electronic charge carriers while simultaneously supporting ionic transport and ionic–electronic coupling. These properties open up broad areas of applications from energy to bioelectronics. Devices include batteries, supercapacitors, actuators, electrochromic displays, and organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). They possess the key strengths of traditional organic electronic materials, such as synthetic tunability and low-temperature processing. Despite the recent advances in devices and applications achieved with such materials, many challenges and gaps in understanding remain. These topics hold the key to designing next-generation materials and devices that continue to push the limits of performance and stability and facilitate novel functionality. This perspective aims to summarize the current understanding, conversations, and debates that made this TSRC particularly engaging, enabling new directions and searching for missing pieces of the OMIEC puzzle. Bioelectronics based on organic mixed conductors offers tremendous application potential in biological interfacing, drug delivery systems, and neuromorphic devices. The ion injection and water swelling upon electrochemical switching can significantly change the molecular packing of polymeric mixed conductors and thus influence the device performance. Herein, we quantify ion and water injection, and analyze the change of microscopic molecular packing of typical polymeric mixed conducting materials, namely poly(3,4‑ethylenedioxythiophene) doped with poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and poly(2‐(3,3′‐bis(2‐(2‐(2‐methoxyethoxy)ethoxy) ethoxy)‐[2,2′‐bithiophen]‐5‐yl)thieno[3,2‐b]thiophene) (p(g2T‐TT)), by integrating electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring, in situ charge accumulation spectroscopy, and electrical current‐voltage measurement. The penetration of ions and water can lead to viscous and disordered microstructures in organic mixed conductors and the water uptake property plays a more dominant role in morphological disruption compared with ion uptake is demonstrated. This study demonstrates the potential application of the combined optical, gravimetric, and electrical operando platform in evaluating the structural kinetics of organic mixed conductors and highlights the importance of concertedly tuning the hydration process, structural integrity, and charge transport properties of organic mixed conductors in order to achieve high performance and stable bioelectronic devices. Three lactone‐based rigid semiconducting polymers were designed to overcome major limitations in the development of n‐type organic thermoelectrics, namely electrical conductivity and air stability. Experimental and theoretical investigations demonstrated that increasing the lactone group density by increasing the benzene content from 0 % benzene (P‐0), to 50 % (P‐50), and 75 % (P‐75) resulted in progressively larger electron affinities (up to 4.37 eV), suggesting a more favorable doping process, when employing (N‐DMBI) as the dopant. Larger polaron delocalization was also evident, due to the more planarized conformation, which is proposed to lead to a lower hopping energy barrier. As a consequence, the electrical conductivity increased by three orders of magnitude, to achieve values of up to 12 S cm and Power factors of 13.2 μWm−1 K−2 were thereby enabled. Polymeric mixed ionic-electronic conductors (MIECs) combine aspects of conjugated polymers, polymer electrolytes, and polyelectrolytes to simultaneously transport and couple ionic and electronic charges, opening exciting new applications in energy storage and conversion, bioelectronics, and display technologies. The many applications of polymeric MIECs lead to a wide range of transport conditions. Ionic and electronic transport are directly coupled through electrochemical doping, while the mechanisms of ionic and electronic transport depend on distinctly different chemical functionality, (macro)molecular structure, and morphology. Despite this, ionic and electronic transport are surprisingly tunable, independent of one another. We review the various types of polymeric MIECs, the mechanisms of ionic and electronic charge transport across conditions, and the interrelations between the two, with special emphasis on the unique aspects of polymeric MIEC transport phenomena. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are the building blocks of biosensors, neuromorphic devices, and complementary circuits. One rule in the materials design for OECTs is the inclusion of a hydrophilic component in the chemical structure to enable ion transport in the film. Here, it is shown that the ladder‐type, side‐chain free polymer poly(benzimidazobenzophenanthroline) (BBL) performs significantly better in OECTs than the donor–acceptor type copolymer bearing hydrophilic ethylene glycol side chains (P‐90). A combination of electrochemical techniques reveals that BBL exhibits a more efficient ion‐to‐electron coupling and higher OECT mobility than P‐90. In situ atomic force microscopy scans evidence that BBL, which swells negligibly in electrolytes, undergoes a drastic and permanent change in morphology upon electrochemical doping. In contrast, P‐90 substantially swells when immersed in electrolytes and shows moderate morphology changes induced by dopant ions. Ex situ grazing incidence wide‐angle X‐ray scattering suggests that the particular packing of BBL crystallites is minimally affected after doping, in contrast to P‐90. BBL's ability to show exceptional mixed transport is due to the crystallites' connectivity, which resists water uptake. This side chain‐free route for the design of mixed conductors could bring the n‐type OECT performance closer to the bar set by their p‐type counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

N‐type conjugated polymers as the semiconducting component of organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) are still undeveloped with respect to their p‐type counterparts. Herein, we report two rigid n‐type conjugated polymers bearing oligo(ethylene glycol) (OEG) side chains, PgNaN and PgNgN, which demonstrated an essentially torsion‐free π‐conjugated backbone. The planarity and electron‐deficient rigid structures enable the resulting polymers to achieve high electron mobility in an OECT device of up to the 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 range, with a deep‐lying LUMO energy level lower than −4.0 eV. Prominently, the polymers exhibited a high device performance with a maximum dimensionally normalized transconductance of 0.212 S cm−1 and the product of charge‐carrier mobility μ and volumetric capacitance C* of 0.662±0.113 F cm−1 V−1 s−1, which are among the highest in n‐type conjugated polymers reported to date. Conjugated polymers with mixed ionic and electronic transport are essential for developing the complexity and function of electrochemical devices. Current n‐type materials have a narrow scope and low performance compared with their p‐type counterparts, requiring new molecular design strategies. This work presents two naphthalene diimide‐bithiophene (NDI‐T2) copolymers functionalized with hybrid alkyl‐glycol side chains, where the naphthalene diimide unit is segregated from the ethylene glycol (EG) units within the side chain by an alkyl spacer. Introduction of hydrophobic propyl and hexyl spacers is investigated as a strategy to minimize detrimental swelling close to the conjugated backbone and balance the mixed conduction properties of n‐type materials in aqueous electrolytes. It is found that both polymers functionalized with alkyl spacers outperform their analogue bearing EG‐only side chains in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). The presence of the alkyl spacers also leads to remarkable stability in OECTs, with no decrease in the ON current after 2 h of operation. Through this versatile side chain modification, this work provides a greater understanding of the structure‐property relationships required for n‐type OECT materials operating in aqueous media. Donor–acceptor (D‐A) polymers are promising materials for organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs), as they minimize detrimental faradaic side‐reactions during OECT operation, yet their steady‐state OECT performance still lags far behind their all‐donor counterparts. We report three D‐A polymers based on the diketopyrrolopyrrole unit that afford OECT performances similar to those of all‐donor polymers, hence representing a significant improvement to the previously developed D‐A copolymers. In addition to improved OECT performance, DFT simulations of the polymers and their respective hole polarons also reveal a positive correlation between hole polaron delocalization and steady‐state OECT performance, providing new insights into the design of OECT materials. Importantly, we demonstrate how polaron delocalization can be tuned directly at the molecular level by selection of the building blocks comprising the polymers' conjugated backbone, thus paving the way for the development of even higher performing OECT polymers. Polar polythiophenes with oligoethylene glycol side chains are exceedingly soft materials. A low glass transition temperature and low degree of crystallinity prevents their use as a bulk material. The synthesis of a copolymer comprising 1) soft polythiophene blocks with tetraethylene glycol side chains, and 2) hard urethane segments is reported. The molecular design is contrary to that of other semiconductor‐insulator copolymers, which typically combine a soft nonconjugated spacer with hard conjugated segments. Copolymerization of polar polythiophenes and urethane segments results in a ductile material that can be used as a free‐standing solid. The copolymer displays a storage modulus of 25 MPa at room temperature, elongation at break of 95%, and a reduced degree of swelling due to hydrogen bonding. Both chemical doping and electrochemical oxidation reveal that the introduction of urethane segments does not unduly reduce the hole charge‐carrier mobility and ability to take up charge. Incorporation of polar side chains on organic semiconducting materials have been used recently in thermoelectric materials to increase dopant:semiconductor miscibility and stability to further increase the performance and durability of devices. However, investigations into how polar side chains can affect the structure and energetics of polythiophenes compared to non-polar alkyl side chains are usually carried out using materials with no common morphological structure. Within this work we systematically investigate the increase in polar side chain content on poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and how the optical, electrochemical, and structural properties are affected. We find a decreasing degree of aggregation with increasing polar side chain content leading to lower charge carrier mobilities. Upon doping with 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane (F4TCNQ), we find that the electrical conductivity is reduced when incorporating the polar side chain and no stabilising effect is demonstrated when annealing the doped thin films at raised temperatures. This study emphasises that polar functionalities do not always increase dopant:semiconductor interactions and can harm desirable structural and electrical characteristics, and therefore should be incorporated into organic semiconductors with caution. N-type semiconducting polymers have been recently utilized in thermoelectric devices, however they have typically exhibited low electrical conductivities and poor device stability, in contrast to p-type semiconductors, which have been much higher performing. This is due in particular to the n-type semiconductor's low doping efficiency, and poor charge carrier mobility. Strategies to enhance the thermoelectric performance of n-type materials include optimizing the electron affinity (EA) with respect to the dopant to improve the doping process and increasing the charge carrier mobility through enhanced molecular packing. Here, we report the design, synthesis and characterization of fused electron-deficient n-type copolymers incorporating the electron withdrawing lactone unit along the backbone. The polymers were synthesized using metal-free aldol condensation conditions to explore the effect of enlarging the central phenyl ring to a naphthalene ring, on the electrical conductivity. When n-doped with N-DMBI, electrical conductivities of up to 0.28 S cm−1, Seebeck coefficients of −75 μV K−1 and maximum Power factors of 0.16 μW m−1 K−2 were observed from the polymer with the largest electron affinity of −4.68 eV. Extending the aromatic ring reduced the electron affinity, due to reducing the density of electron withdrawing groups and subsequently the electrical conductivity reduced by almost two orders of magnitude. A series of semiconducting small molecules with bithiophene or bis‐3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene cores are designed and synthesized. The molecules display stable reversible oxidation in solution and can be reversibly oxidized in the solid state with aqueous electrolyte when functionalized with polar triethylene glycol side chains. Evidence of promising ion injection properties observed with cyclic voltammetry is complemented by strong electrochromism probed by spectroelectrochemistry. Blending these molecules with high molecular weight polyethylene oxide (PEO) is found to improve both ion injection and thin film stability. The molecules and their corresponding PEO blends are investigated as active layers in organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs). For the most promising molecule:polymer blend (P4E4:PEO), p‐type accumulation mode OECTs with µA drain currents, μS peak transconductances, and a µC* figure‐of‐merit value of 0.81 F V−1 cm−1 s−1 are obtained. Organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) exhibit strong potential for various applications in bioelectronics, especially as miniaturized, point‐of‐care biosensors, because of their efficient transducing ability. To date, however, the majority of reported OECTs have relied on p‐type (hole transporting) polymer mixed conductors, due to the limited number of n‐type (electron transporting) materials suitable for operation in aqueous electrolytes, and the low performance of those which exist. It is shown that a simple solvent‐engineering approach boosts the performance of OECTs comprising an n‐type, naphthalenediimide‐based copolymer in the channel. The addition of acetone, a rather bad solvent for the copolymer, in the chloroform‐based polymer solution leads to a three‐fold increase in OECT transconductance, as a result of the simultaneous increase in volumetric capacitance and electron mobility in the channel. The enhanced electrochemical activity of the polymer film allows high‐performance glucose sensors with a detection limit of 10 × 10−6m of glucose and a dynamic range of more than eight orders of magnitude. The approach proposed introduces a new tool for concurrently improving the conduction of ionic and electronic charge carriers in polymer mixed conductors, which can be utilized for a number of bioelectronic applications relying on efficient OECT operation. Ion transport in organic mixed ionic-electronic conductors (OMIECs) is crucial due to its direct impact on device response time and operating mechanisms but is often assessed indirectly or necessitates extra assumptions. Operando x-ray fluorescence (XRF) is a powerful, direct probe for elemental characterization of bulk OMIECs and was used to directly quantify ion composition and mobility in a model OMIEC, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)- poly(styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS), during device operation. The first cycle revealed slow electrowetting and cation-proton exchange. Subsequent cycles showed rapid response with minor cation fluctuation (~5%). Comparison with optical-tracked electrochromic fronts revealed mesoscale structure-dependent proton transport. The calculated effective ion mobility demonstrated thickness-dependent behavior, emphasizing an interfacial ion transport pathway with a higher mobile ion density. The decoupling of interfacial effects on bulk ion mobility and the decoupling of cation and proton migration elucidate ion transport in conventional and emerging OMIEC-based devices and has broader implications for other ionic conductors writ large. Operando characterization plays an important role in revealing the structure-property relationships of organic mixed ionic/electronic conductors (OMIECs), enabling the direct observation of dynamic changes during device operation and thus guiding the development of new materials. This review focuses on the application of different operando characterization techniques in the study of OMIECs, highlighting the time-dependent and bias-dependent structure, composition, and morphology information extracted from these techniques. We first illustrate the needs, requirements, and challenges of operando characterization then provide an overview of relevant experimental techniques, including spectroscopy, scattering, microbalance, microprobe, and electron microscopy. We also compare different in silico methods and discuss the interplay of these computational methods with experimental techniques. Finally, we provide an outlook on the future development of operando for OMIEC-based devices and look toward multimodal operando techniques for more comprehensive and accurate description of OMIECs.

Novel p-type semiconducting polymers that can facilitate ion penetration, and operate in accumulation mode are much desired in bioelectronics. Glycol side chains have proven to be an efficient method to increase bulk electrochemical doping and optimize aqueous swelling. One early polymer which exemplifies these design approaches was p(g2T-TT), employing a bithiophene- co -thienothiophene backbone with glycol side chains in the 3,3' positions of the bithiophene repeat unit. In this paper, the analogous regioisomeric polymer, namely pgBTTT, was synthesized by relocating the glycol side chains position on the bithiophene unit of p(g2T-TT) from the 3,3' to the 4,4' positions and compared with the original p(g2T-TT). By changing the regio-positioning of the side chains, the planarizing effects of the S-O interactions were redistributed along the backbone, and the influence on the polymer's microstructure organization was investigated using grazing-incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS) measurements. The newly designed pgBTTT exhibited lower backbone disorder, closer π-stacking, and higher scattering intensity in both the in-plane and out-of-plane GIWAXS measurements. The effect of the improved planarity of pgBTTT manifested as higher hole mobility (μ) of 3.44 ± 0.13 cm 2 V -1 s -1 . Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) was in agreement with the GIWAXS measurements and demonstrated, for the first time, that glycol side chains can also facilitate intermolecular interdigitation analogous to that of pBTTT. Electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation of energy (eQCM-D) measurements revealed that pgBTTT maintains a more rigid structure than p(g2T-TT) during doping, minimizing molecular packing disruption and maintaining higher hole mobility in operation mode.

Three dipropenyl monomers were prepared for ruthenium-catalyzed acyclic diene metathesis (ADMET) polymerization. Homopolymerization afforded three poly(thienylene vinylene)s (PTVs) with distinct optoelectronic properties. Binary combinations of the monomers over a range of compositions gave three series of copolymer samples with tunable HOMO levels and band gaps. The utility of this method was further demonstrated by the preparation of a stoichiometric terpolymer. Polymers were characterized by 1 H NMR spectroscopy, size-exclusion chromatography, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, and cyclic voltammetry. This copolymerization approach effectively demonstrates the ability of ADMET polymerization to prepare conjugated copolymers with tuned optoelectronic properties that span a broad composition window.
