Corporate responsibility (CR) is becoming a key issue in the food chain. In order to make sense of this phenomenon, a seminal aper by Maloni and Brown (2006) called for further empirical investigation on the criteria of responsibility in the food supply chain. The purpose of this paper is to answer the call by identifying the criteria for defining CR and develop indicators for measuring the responsibility performance of the food chain. The study was based on interactive and participatory stakeholder dialogues with diverse experts, corporate representatives and other stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and governmental bodies. Through an iterative research process we identified the criteria and developed the indicators. Our findings enable business leaders to evaluate and manage their operations towards more responsible business praxis

Growing interest in corporate sustainability has translated into growing concerns about how corporate responsibility management can be more effectively integrated with economic business goals, challenging organizations to shift their priorities toward more holistic strategies and performance assessment models which encompass measures related to both multiple stakeholders and responsibilities. Although interactions between corporate (social) strategy, sustainability performance, and business competitiveness have received considerable attention in both theory and practice over the past three decades, the phenomenon is under-investigated in forest-based industry, which is undergoing broad structural changes and global shifts in market demand and supply. This dissertation aims to fill this gap by approaching it from the resource-based view of the firm and empirically investigating a variety of aspects in an attempt to provide an overview of state-of-the-art corporate sustainability in global forest-based industry and to capture a structured view of the relationships between sustainability performance, competitiveness and economic performance among forest-based companies. The results indicate that both larger and small forest-based companies seem to have clear stakeholder orientations. Driven by legal requirements aspects, small companies tend to adopt informal corporate responsibility strategies and tools to meet their stakeholder expectations. A majority of large forest industry companies appear to have implemented corporate responsibility mainly with a profit-maximizing assumption and a relatively defensive approach parallel to and beyond their core business. To these large companies, environmental and economic issues are dominant in disclosure and profitability, while regional differences are not decisive in formulating strategies for sustainability reporting. Furthermore, the results bolster previous findings that have reported a positive return on corporate responsibility initiatives in terms of profitability, suggesting that corporate responsibility can enhance value creation for forest-based companies. To that end, a differentiated business-oriented approach is necessary in managing the business case for sustainability. Kasvava kiinnostus kestävään kehityksen näkyy myös yritysten strategioissa yhä merkittävämmin. Huoli siitä, miten yritysten vastuuta voidaan arvioida ja johtaa tehokkaammin on kuitenkin edelleen avoin kysymys. Siten, vaikka vuorovaikutus yritysten strategian, kestävyyden ja yritysten kilpailukyvyn välillä on saanut laajaa huomiota teorian ja käytännön tutkimustyössä, ilmiö on edelleen huonosti tunnettu erityisesti Metsäteollisuuden alueella. Tämä on paradoksaalista, kun kyse on alasta, jolla yhteiskuntavastuun kysymykset ovat korostuneita luonteeltaan. Tämä väitöskirja pyrkii täyttämään em. aukon lähestyen kestävyyden käsitteistöä ns. resurssipohjaisen teorian näkökulmasta. Väitöskirja identifioi eturivin kestävyyden käsitteistöä ja sen käyttöä ja vertaa tätä saatua käsitteistöä yritysten kestävyyden suorituskykyyn , kilpailukyyn sekä taloudelliseen suoriutumiseen. Tulosten perusteella näyttää siltä, että sekä suuria että pieniä metsäteollisuusyrityksiä, ohjaavat yritysten sidosryhmien orientaatiot. Samalla, kun pieniä metsäteollisuuden yrityksiä kuvaa epävirallinen vastuukriteerien hallinta, kommunikointi ja käyttö, niin valtaosaa suurten metsäyhtiöiden toiminnasta näyttäisi kuvaavan kestävyyden kriteerien käyttö voiton maksimointiin sekä suhteellisen puolustava asenne niiden ydinliiketoimintaa kohtaan. Siten, vaikka tulokset tukevat aiempia tutkimuksia tuottavuuden positiivisesti korrelaatiosta kestävyyden kriteerien kanssa, yritysten nykyiset strategiat estävät tämän potentiaalin kokonaisvaltaista hyödyntämistä. Keskeisin tulos ehkä onkin, että alan voimakkaissa muutoksissa, strategiat ovat jääneet jälkeen yritysvastuukysymysten vaatimien rakenteellisten muutosten tasolla. Yritysvastuun toteuttaminen näyttää vaativan käsitteen kokonaisvaltaisen sisällyttämisen yrityksen strategiaan sekä läheisen yhteyden yrityksen viiteryhmiin. Tämä taas näyttäisi vaativan organisaation sisäisiä muutoksia.

The sustainability of food production has increasingly attracted the attention of consumers, farmers, food and retailing companies, and politicians. One manifestation of such attention is the growing interest in organic foods. Organic agriculture has the potential to enhance the ecological modernisation of food production by implementing the organic method as a preventative innovation that simultaneously produces environmental and economic benefits. However, in addition to the challenges to organic farming, the small market share of organic products in many countries today and Finland in particular risks undermining the achievement of such benefits. The problems identified as hindrances to the increased consumption of organic food are the poor availability, limited variety and high prices of organic products, the complicated buying decisions and the difficulties in delivering the intangible value of organic foods. Small volumes and sporadic markets, high costs, lack of market information, as well as poor supply reliability are obstacles to increasing the volume of organic production and processing. These problems shift the focus from a single actor to the entire supply chain and require solutions that involve more interaction among the actors within the organic chain. As an entity, the organic food chain has received very little scholarly attention. Researchers have mainly approached the organic chain from the perspective of a single actor, or they have described its structure rather than the interaction between the actors. Consequently, interaction among the primary actors in organic chains, i.e. farmers, manufacturers, retailers and consumers, has largely gone unexamined. The purpose of this study is to shed light on the interaction of the primary actors within a whole organic chain in relation to the ecological modernisation of food production. This information is organised into a conceptual framework to help illuminate this complex field. This thesis integrates the theories and concepts of three approaches: food system studies, supply chain management and ecological modernisation. Through a case study, a conceptual system framework will be developed and applied to a real life-situation. The thesis is supported by research published in four articles. All examine the same organic chains through case studies, but each approaches the problem from a different, complementary perspective. The findings indicated that regardless of the coherent values emphasising responsibility, the organic chains were loosely integrated to operate as a system. The focus was on product flow, leaving other aspects of value creation largely aside. Communication with consumers was rare, and none of the actors had taken a leading role in enhancing the market for organic products. Such a situation presents unsuitable conditions for ecological modernisation of food production through organic food and calls for contributions from stakeholders other than those directly involved in the product chain. The findings inspired a revision of the original conceptual framework. The revised framework, the three-layer framework , distinguishes the different layers of interaction. By gradually enlarging the chain orientation the different but interrelated layers become visible. A framework is thus provided for further research and for understanding practical implications of the performance of organic food chains. The revised framework provides both an ideal model for organic chains in relation to ecological modernisation and demonstrates a situation consistent with the empirical evidence. Kestävä ruuan tuotanto kiinnostaa yhä enemmän kuluttajia, tarjontaketjun toimijoita ja muita sidosryhmiä. Yhtenä osoituksena tästä on luonnonmukaisesti tuotettujen elintarvikkeiden (luomutuotteiden) kasvanut kysyntä ja tarjonta. Luomutuotteiden osuus ruuan kokonaismarkkinasta on kuitenkin toistaiseksi pieni, erityisesti Suomessa, jossa luomutuotteiden osuus on vain noin prosentti ruuan kokonaismarkkinasta. Luomutuotteiden kysynnän esteiksi ovat osoittautuneet muun maussa niiden huono saatavuus, vähäinen valikoima ja korkeat hinnat sekä ostopäätösten monimutkaisuus ja vaikeudet viestiä ei-aistittavasta lisäarvosta. Pienet tuotantomäärät, sirpaleiset markkinat, korkeat kustannukset, markkinatiedon puute sekä luomuraaka-aineiden epävarma saatavuus puolestaan vähentävät toimijoiden kiinnostusta kasvattaa luomutuotteiden tarjontaa. Näiden ongelmien ratkaiseminen edellyttää näkökulman siirtämistä yhdestä toimijasta koko tarjontaketjuun ja sen toimijoiden väliseen vuorovaikutukseen ja yhteistyöhön. Luomuketjua kokonaisuutena on tutkittu vähän. Tutkijat ovat pääosin lähestyneet ketjua yhden toimijaryhmän, kuten kuluttajien tai viljelijöiden näkökulmasta tai kuvanneet ketjujen rakennetta. Toimijoiden välinen vuorovaikutus on näin ollen jäänyt tutkimatta. Tämän tutkimuksen tarkoituksena on valottaa viljelijöistä kuluttajiin ulottuvan luomuketjun toimijoiden välistä vuorovaikutusta ruuan tuotannon ekologisen modernisaation näkökulmasta. Ekologisella modernisaatiolla tarkoitetaan tässä luomutuotannon menetelmien soveltamista ekologisia haittoja ennaltaehkäisevänä innovaationa ekologisten ja taloudellisten hyötyjen yhtaikaiseksi saavuttamiseksi. Tutkimus luo mallin luomuketjun toimijoiden vuorovaikutuksen ymmärtämiseksi. Tutkimus yhdistää kolmen seuraavan tutkimusalueen teoriaa: ruokajärjestelmä, kysyntä-tarjontaketjun johtaminen sekä ekologinen modernisaatio. Väitöskirja pohjautuu neljässä artikkelissa julkaistuihin tapaustutkimuksiin, jotka tutkivat kahta suomalaista luomuketjua, mutta lähestyvät niitä toisiaan täydentävistä näkökulmista. Tulosten mukaan tutkitut ketjut eivät toimineet yhteistyötä harjoittavina systeemeinä huolimatta kaikkien toimijoiden vastuullisuutta korostavista arvoista. Vuorovaikutuksen painopiste oli sujuvassa tuotevirrassa ja muut lisäarvotekijät jäivät pääosin vaille huomiota. Tiedonvaihto kuluttajien kanssa oli vähäistä eikä kukaan toimijoista ollut ottanut johtavaa roolia kysynnän kasvattamiseksi. Tällainen tilanne edellyttää muiden sidosryhmien tukea ekologisen modernisaation toteutumiseksi. Tulokset innostivat jalostamaan alkuperäistä vuorovaikutuksen systeemimallia. Uudistettu malli, kolmikerros-malli, erottelee vuorovaikutuksen kolme eri kerrosta. Malli tarjoaa viitekehyksen tuleville tutkimuksille sekä luomuketjujen toimintaa käytännössä kehittäville toimenpiteille.
