The term “mobile learning” (or “m-learning”) refers to using handheld phones to learn and wireless computing as a learning tool and connectivity technology. This paper presents and explores the latest mobile platform for teaching and studying programming basics. The M-Learning tool was created using a platform-independent approach to target the largest available number of learners while reducing development and maintenance time and effort. Since the code is completely shared across mobile devices (iOS, Android, and Windows Phone), students can use any smartphone to access the app. To make the programme responsive, scalable, and dynamic, and to provide students with personalised guidance, the core application is based on an analysis design development implementation and assessment (ADDIE) model implemented in the Xamarin framework. The application’s key features are depicted in a prototype. An experiment is carried out on BS students at a university to evaluate the efficacy of the generated application. A usefulness questionnaire is administered to an experimental community in order to determine students’ expectations of the developed mobile application’s usability. The findings of the experiment show that the application is considerably more successful than conventional learning in developing students’ online knowledge assessment abilities, with an impact size of 1.96. The findings add to the existing mobile learning literature by defining usability assessment features and offering a basis for designing platform-independent m-learning applications. The current findings are explored in terms of their implications for study and teaching practice.

Progressive Web Apps (PWA) is a concept of enhanced web apps which aim to erase the difference between web and native apps. The concept of PWA introduces several benefits, including simpler distribution and development, which makes web apps a viable option for many businesses. The installation process of a PWA is different from native apps and this study aims to understand whether or not it has an impact on the users will to install the PWA. PWA:s are installed directly from the browser, rather than an app marketplace. Said installation process is suspected to be unknown to many which might influence the impact. In this study, several papers on the topic are studied. A PWA is developed from scratch which is used as a platform for a user test, hosting a brief introduction of the topic as well as guiding participants through the installation process. In conjunction with the user test a survey is conducted to collect the impressions from their experience in the user test. The result of the survey shows indications that the suspected lack of knowledge and experience was correct, and that the installation process is not to complicated.Additionally, results show that many probably will not bother to install a PWA, even if it is available. Therefore, I argue that the installation process does have an impact in its current form. Alternatives to the installation process used in this study do exist and are discussed in this paper.

Das Ziel dieser Bachelorarbeit ist es, React Native, Flutter und Ionic zu vergleichen, drei weit verbreitete Frameworks um plattformübergreifende Anwendungen zu entwickeln. Da mobile Anwendungen immer wichtiger werden, sind verschiedene Frameworks entstanden, die diesen Prozess erleichtern. Diese Arbeit gibt einen ausführlichen Überblick über den verwendeten Ansatz für die Entwicklung, die wichtigsten Konzepte sowie technische Details jedes Frameworks basierend auf einer gründlichen Literaturrecherche unter Verwendung der Dokumentation und offiziellen Ressourcen der Frameworks sowie Quellen von unabhängigen Autoren. Als Leitfaden dient die folgende Forschungsfrage: Inwiefern können die Frameworks React Native, Flutter und Ionic anhand eines allgemeinen und eines technischen Standpunktes verglichen werden? Alle behandelten Frameworks haben das Ziel, Anwendungen zu erstellen, die nativ auf verschiedenen Plattformen ausgeführt werden können, allerdings gibt es Unterschiede, wie dieses Ziel erreicht wird. React Native ist ein JavaScript Framework, welches auf React basiert. Die Benutzeroberfläche wird dabei deklarativ mit Components erstellt und wird in einer Laufzeitumgebung des Frameworks ausgeführt. Flutter ist ein Dart Framework, das die Benutzeroberfläche aus Widgets erstellt und mit einer eigenen Engine rendert. Anwendungen werden für jede unterstützte Plattform in binäres Format kompiliert, um nativ ausgeführt werden zu können. Ionic verwendet die Internettechnologien HTML/CSS und JavaScript, um mithilfe von WebViews zu laufen. Im Prinzip wird dabei der Browser ohne Adressleiste verwendet und in die Anwendung integriert. Plattformunterstützung ist bis auf kleinere Unterschiede größtenteils gleichwertig zwischen den Frameworks. Auch bei der Erstellung der Benutzeroberfläche gibt es Gemeinsamkeiten. Im Vergleich ist React Native aktuell weiter verbreitet als Flutter, doch die Beliebtheit von Flutter steigt. Hinsichtlich Leistung weist React Native durchschnittlich eine kleine Anwendungsgröße auf und beansprucht weniger Arbeitsspeicher. Andererseits punktet Flutter mit weniger CPU-Auslastung sowie geringerem Arbeitsspeicheranstieg unter Last. Daher sticht kein Framework klar heraus, die Wahl des Frameworks hängt eher von den Voraussetzungen der Anwendung ab. This Bachelor’s thesis aims to compare React Native, Flutter and the Ionic Framework, which are three prominent frameworks for cross-platform development. As mobile applications are becoming more and more important, various frameworks emerged that aid the creation process. This paper provides a thorough overview of the relevant crossplatform approach, key concepts, and technical details of each framework based on a careful literature research using the documentation and official resources provided by the frameworks as well as papers and sources by independent authors. The research question serving as guideline is:How do the frameworks React Native, Flutter and Ionic compare from a general as well as a technical perspective? All covered frameworks share the goal of creating applications, that can run natively on different platforms. Although, different approaches are utilized to achieve this objective. React Native is a JavaScript framework based on React, which builds the user interface declaratively out of Components. React Native applications are executed in a runtime environment of the framework. Flutter is a framework using Dart, which creates the user interface from custom Widgets with a custom rendering engine. Applications are compiled into binary format for each platform to run natively. The Ionic Framework uses web technologies, HTML/CSS and JavaScript, to run with WebViews. Essentially, the browser without address bar is utilized and embedded in the application. Platform support is largely equivalent among frameworks apart from small differences. Similarities in the way how the user interface is created can also be observed. In comparison, React Native is still more prevalent than Flutter, however Flutter experiences a higher growth in popularity. Looking at performance, React Native applications exhibit a smaller package size and lower memory usage on average. Contrarily, Flutter’s applications feature less CPU utilization and a smaller increase in memory usage under load. During the software development developers often copy and paste fragments of code to achieve the desired result. Copying of code can lead to variety of errors, as well as can increase the size of the source and binary code. The problem of finding semantically similar pieces of code (clones) in binary code becomes actual due to the unavailability of source code of many software programs. The first part of the article is dedicated to the analysis of the existing methods for finding code clone in binary code. In the second part we provide a newly developed tool for finding code clones in binary code. The work of the tool is divided into three main stages. The first stage is based on the Binnavi [1] framework, which is responsible for generation of program dependence graphs (PDG). Program dependence graphs are generated using REIL (Reverse Engineering Intermediate Language). The usage of REIL language allows to generate graphs for multiple architectures (x86, x86-64, ARM, MIPS, PPC), thus providing the independence of the tool from the target architecture. In the second step code clones are found based on previously created graphs. Maximum common subgraph is built for each pair of graphs and based on it, code clones are detected. In the third stage, the detected clones are visualized for convenient analysis of the results.

We consider supervisor synthesis of Extended Finite Automata that are represented using Binary Decision Diagrams (BDDs). Peak used BDD nodes and BDD operation count are introduced as platform independent and deterministic metrics that quantitatively indicate the computational effort needed to synthesize a supervisor. The use of BDD operation count is novel with respect to expressing supervisor synthesis effort. The (dis-)advantages of using these metrics to state of practice metrics such as wall clock time and worst case state space size are analyzed. The supervisor synthesis algorithm is initiated with a certain event- and variable order. It is already known from literature that variable order influences synthesis performance. We show that the event order is also relevant to consider. We discuss how these orders influence the synthesis effort and, by performing an experiment on a set of models, we show the extent of this influence.

Emerging computing architectures such as near-memory computing (NMC) promise improved performance for applications by reducing the data movement between CPU and memory. However, detecting such applications is not a trivial task. In this ongoing work, we extend the state-of-the-art platform-independent software analysis tool with NMC related metrics such as memory entropy, spatial locality, data-level, and basic-block-level parallelism. Gamification is defined as the injection of game elements in applications with non-gaming purposes. This technique has shown outstanding results in promoting the engagement and activity on communities of users, in both business and non-for-profits fields. Often, gamification features are added late in the application life-cycle and must be weaved into the existing functions. In this paper, we present a model-driven approach to the design of gamified applications, which accelerates the introduction of gamification elements in pre-existing or new applications. The approach relies on a data model of gamification features and on design patterns for the front-end, which encode the essential elements of gamification in a platform independent way.

This article presents an approach that allows the reuse of choreographies of digital stories, regardless of the platform for which they have been developed. Nowadays, story choreographies are linked to either game technology, simulations or interactive animations for which they have been implemented, so they become unavailable as these platforms become obsolete. This limits their reuse, because to perpetuate these digital stories requires new and repeated efforts and investments in its re-creation for new technological platforms that appear in substitution of the previous ones. We propose a methodology to safeguard the semantics of this "narrative choreographies" in an independent way, allowing them to be automatically adapted to new technological platforms when the original ones become obsolete. Part 1: Regular Papers; International audience; Derivative instruments have special characteristics that make them difficult to understand and to handle in financial instrument accounting. In the OntoREA© Accounting and Finance Model [1] such instruments are conceptualized and integrated into the REAC Business Ontology [2] as well as the OntoREA Accounting Model [3]. But the OntoREA© model is developed at a very abstract level so that no real cases are used for demonstration and evaluation. This shortcoming is addressed in this article by demonstrating and evaluating the Collective conceptualization of derivative instruments in OntoREA© from a retroactive design science methodological (DSRM) [4] perspective within the model driven software development (MDD) context. Along the model transformations in this context the OntoREA© model serves as platform independent (PIM) model. For demonstration purposes its direct translation into a platform specific (PSM) as well as an implementation specific (ISM) model are demonstrated for a real derivative instrument. The evaluation shows that the requirements of derivative instruments are met adequately.

Data driven organizations gather information on various aspects of their endeavours and analyze that information to gain valuable insights or to increase automatization. Today, these organizations can choose from a wealth of specialized analytical libraries and platforms to meet their functional and non-functional requirements. Indeed, many common application scenarios involve the combination of multiple such libraries and platforms in order to provide a holistic perspective. Due to the scattered landscape of specialized analytical tools, this integration can result in complex and hard to evolve applications. In addition, the necessary movement of data between tools and formats can introduce a serious performance penalty. In this article we present a unified programming environment for analytical applications. The environment includes AL, a programming language that combines concepts of various common analytical domains. Further, the environment also includes a flexible compilation system that uses a language-, domain-, and platform independent program intermediate representation to separate high level application logic and physical organisation. We provide a detailed introduction of AL, establish our program intermediate representation as a generally useful abstraction, and give a detailed explanation of the translation of AL programs into workloads for our experimental shared-memory processing engine.

Material science has achieved more and more attention because of its singular response to the electromagnetic wave. A new application oriented talent training mode of material science in colleges and universities is studied in this paper. The new model of cultivating talents is explored, and the practical teaching system of two step education curriculum platforms is used for constructing the model. The investigation result shows that an increased learning for the student whom were more active on the platform independent on their previous performances.

However, low-level programs lack high-level structures (such as types, control-flow graph, etc.), preventing the straightforward application of source-code analysis techniques. Especially, conditional jumps rely on low-level flag predicates, whereas they often encode high-level “natural” conditions on program variables. Most static analyzers are unable to infer any interesting information from these low-level conditions, leading to serious precision loss compared with source-level analysis. In this paper, we propose template-based recovery, an automatic approach for retrieving high-level predicates from their low-level flag versions. Especially, the technique is sound, efficient, platform-independent and it achieves very high ratio of recovery. This method allows more precise analyses and helps to understand machine encoding of conditionals rather than relying on error-prone human interpretation or (syntactic) pattern-based reasoning.

International audience; The supercomputing platforms available for high performance computing based research evolve at a great rate. However, this rapid development of novel technologies requires constant adaptations and optimizations of the existing codes for each new machine architecture. In such context, minimizing time of efficiently porting the code on a new platform is of crucial importance. A possible solution for this common challenge is to use simulations of the application that can assist in detecting performance bottlenecks. Due to prohibitive costs of classical cycle-accurate simulators, coarse-grain simulations are more suitable for large parallel and distributed systems. We present a procedure of implementing the profiling for openQCD code [1] through simulation, which will enable the global reduction of the cost of profiling and optimizing this code commonly used in the lattice QCD community. Our approach is based on well-known SimGrid simulator [2], which allows for fast and accurate performance predictions of HPC codes. Additionally, accurate estimations of the program behavior on some future machines, not yet accessible to us, are anticipated.

A virtual learning environment can engage university students in the learning process in ways that the traditional lectures and lab formats can not. We present our virtual learning environment \emph{StudentResearcher} which incorporates simulations, multiple-choice quizzes, video lectures and gamification into a learning path for quantum mechanics at the advanced university level. \emph{StudentResearcher} is built upon the experiences gathered from workshops with the citizen science game Quantum Moves at the high-school and university level, where the games were used extensively to illustrate the basic concepts of quantum mechanics. The first test of this new virtual learning environment was a 2014 course in advanced quantum mechanics at Aarhus University with 47 enrolled students. This paper introduces Jasper, a web programming framework which allows web applications to be developed in an essentially platform indepedent manner and which is also suited to a formal treatment. It outlines Jasper conceptually and shows how Jasper is implemented on several commonplace platforms. It also introduces the Jasper Music Store, a web application powered by Jasper and implemented on each of these platforms. The general objective is to make domain-specific modeling for the construction of modules of learning management systems (LMS) platform independent. For this, the start point is a metamodel for the contruction a domain specific language (DSL), that with model-driven engineering (MDE) and applying the appropriate transformations are achieved from a independent model platform, deploy this model with LMS modules in moodle.

The eIMRT platform is a remote distributed computing tool that provides users with Internet access to three different services: Monte Carlo optimization of treatment plans, CRT & IMRT treatment optimization, and a database of relevant radiation treatments/clinical cases. These services are accessible through a user-friendly and platform independent web page. Its flexible and scalable design focuses on providing the final users with services rather than a collection of software pieces. All input and output data (CT, contours, treatment plans and dose distributions) are handled using the DICOM format. The design, implementation, and support of the verification and optimization algorithms are hidden to the user. This allows a unified, robust handling of the software and hardware that enables these computation-intensive services. The eIMRT platform is currently hosted by the Galician Supercomputing Center (CESGA) and may be accessible upon request (there is a demo version at http://eimrt.cesga.es:8080/ eIMRT2/demo; request access in http://eimrt.cesga.es/signup.html). This paper describes all aspects of the eIMRT algorithms in depth, its user interface, and its services. Due to the flexible design of the platform, it has numerous applications including the intercenter comparison of treatment planning, the quality assurance of radiation treatments, the design and implementation of new approaches to certain types of treatments, and the sharing of information on radiation treatment techniques. In addition, the web platform and software tools developed for treatment verification and optimization have a modular design that allows the user to extend them with new algorithms. This software is not a commercial product. It is the result of the collaborative effort of different public research institutions and is planned to be distributed as an open source project. Four hundred and eighty-one ultraconserved sequences (UCRs) longer than 200 bases were discovered in the genomes of human, mouse and rat. These are DNA sequences showing 100% identity among the three species. UCRs are frequently located at genomic regions involved in cancer, differentially expressed in human leukemias and carcinomas and in some instances regulated by microRNAs (miRNAs). Here we present UCbase & miRfunc, the first database which provides ultraconserved sequences data and shows miRNA function. Also, it links UCRs and miRNAs with the related human disorders and genomic properties. The current release contains over 2000 sequences from three species (human, mouse and rat). As a web application, UCbase & miRfunc is platform independent and it is accessible at http://microrna.osu.edu/.UCbase4.

Software methods that enable navigation of radiology cases on various digital platforms differ between handheld devices and desktop computers. This has resulted in poor compatibility of online radiology teaching files across mobile smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers. A standardized, platform-independent, or "agnostic" approach for presenting online radiology content was produced in this work by leveraging modern hypertext markup language (HTML) and JavaScript web software technology. We describe the design and evaluation of this software, demonstrate its use across multiple viewing platforms, and make it publicly available as a model for future development efforts.

Objectives. In this thesis I have, together with game developer and publisher Paradox Interactive, designed and implemented a level editor tool for use in their game Magicka 2. With this tool users can create, edit and share custom Challenge levels in the game. I have also done a more in-depth scientific study of usability in such level editor tools, especially pertaining to the disparity between various controller input schemes and platforms. Methods. I have performed a literary study of articles and books relevant to the field of game design, user interface design, general usability, controller input schemes and any other topic I found relevant. I have paired this with a study of similar level editor tools and their user interfaces and features in other console and PC games. This knowledge, together with feedback from both expert and non-expert testing, has then been analyzed and used to design and implement both the user interface and the features of the level editor. Results. Results of the literary study, level editor tool study and testing are presented together with their impact on the design of the user interface and all implemented features. The results of each iteration of the Challenge Creator are presented as well. Lastly, all results are analyzed and a set of design heuristics for creating a similar level editor tool is presented. Conclusions. I conclude that creating a platform independent level editor tool with high usability is very much possible, but that designing such a tool becomes far more difficult with each new platform and controller input scheme supported. I also conclude that additional features and further increase in tool complexity loses significant impact if the core user interface is lacking in usability. I also conclude that more time and testing will be needed to further empirically validate the design heuristics. Lastly, I conclude that additional iterations will be required upon the Challenge Creator to improve its usability in light of already known and established design flaws.

An MDA-based design approach should be able to accommodate designs at different levels of platform-independence. We have previously proposed a design approach [2], which allows these levels to be identified. An important feature of this approach is the notion of abstract platform. An abstract platform is determined by considering the platform characteristics that are relevant for applications at a certain level of platform-independence as well as the various design goals. In this paper, we discuss how our design approach can be supported using the MDA standards UML 2.0 and MOF 2.0. Since our methodological framework is based on the notion of abstract platform, we pay particular attention to the representation of abstract platforms and the language requirements to specify abstract platforms.

This paper presents the development of a novel knowledge-based engineering (KBE) framework for implementing platform-independent knowledge-enabled product design systems within the aerospace industry. The aim of the KBE framework is to strengthen the structure, reuse and portability of knowledge consumed within KBE systems in view of supporting the cost-effective and long-term preservation of knowledge within such systems. The proposed KBE framework uses an ontology-based approach for semantic knowledge management and adopts a model-driven architecture style from the software engineering discipline. Its phases are mainly (1) Capture knowledge required for KBE system; (2) Ontology model construct of KBE system; (3) Platform-independent model (PIM) technology selection and implementation and (4) Integration of PIM KBE knowledge with computer-aided design system. A rigorous methodology is employed which is comprised of five qualitative phases namely, requirement analysis for the KBE framework, identifying software and ontological engineering elements, integration of both elements, proof of concept prototype demonstrator and finally experts validation. A case study investigating four primitive three-dimensional geometry shapes is used to quantify the applicability of the KBE framework in the aerospace industry. Additionally, experts within the aerospace and software engineering sector validated the strengths/benefits and limitations of the KBE framework. The major benefits of the developed approach are in the reduction of man-hours required for developing KBE systems within the aerospace industry and the maintainability and abstraction of the knowledge required for developing KBE systems. This approach strengthens knowledge reuse and eliminates platform-specific approaches to developing KBE systems ensuring the preservation of KBE knowledge for the long term.

In this paper the Authors present a highly modular and platform-independent software, being based on the MATLAB® programming environment, which is proposed as a valuable aid in the design and analysis of the windings of rotating electrical machines. Unlike the major part of the commercial software, the cases of both symmetric and asymmetric (unbalanced) windings with any number of phases are here considered. The software can perform a considerable amount of calculations in order to determine automatically the optimal structure of the winding starting from its specifications. It is also able to draw the winding map and gives the results of calculation for the harmonic winding factors. The realized software allow the designer to reduce the harmonics winding coefficient with the only drawback of a small reduction of the fundamental coefficient, both for e.m.f. and m.m.f.

In component-based and model-driven development it is common to model embedded applications in a platform-independent manner. As an example, some approaches allow development of distributed applications while abstracting away from details of communication between platform nodes. Using such an approach requires to implement this communication before an executable system is deployed. Currently it is common to automatically implement this communication on the level of code, while providing it on the model level is mostly a task that needs to be done manually. In this paper we present a framework for automatic generation of inter-node communication by adding communication components to software models. The framework provides flexibility in the level of automation of generation decisions, and is defined in a way which allows adding support for new communication media or protocols. We have implemented the generation framework for the IEC 61499 standard and provide a prototype generation tool, which we use for examining the applicability of the approach.

In the actual context of the world economic and financial crisis, any source that causes economy is welcomed. In the technical educational system such a source is represented by the implementation of remote labs. These allow, among other things, the sharing of modern technology between several centers and also the saving of power by using an adequate energetic management. This paper presents a solution for implementing remote labs by using web technologies that are platform independent from the client point of view. Such a lab implementation exemplification is materialized by remote controlling the NI-ELVIS platform.

Today, creation of basic mobile widget mashups is a straightforward task. However, designing mobile mashups that are actually secure to use remains very challenging. In this paper, we discuss the security risks introduced by mobile mashups and then propose a platform independent architecture called SCCM for securing this type of mashups. SCCM has been implemented on an Android platform, and the results of our security evaluations are encouraging.

Quantitative proteomics applications in mass spectrometry depend on the knowledge of the mass-to-charge ratio (m/z) values of proteotypic peptides for the proteins under study and their product ions. MRMPath and MRMutation, web-based bioinformatics software that are platform independent, facilitate the recovery of this information by biologists. MRMPath utilizes publicly available information related to biological pathways in the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) database. All the proteins involved in pathways of interest are recovered and processed in silico to extract information relevant to quantitative mass spectrometry analysis. Peptides may also be subjected to automated BLAST analysis to determine whether they are proteotypic. MRMutation catalogs and makes available, following processing, known (mutant) variants of proteins from the current UniProtKB database. All these results, available via the web from well-maintained, public databases, are written to an Excel spreadsheet, which the user can download and save. MRMPath and MRMutation can be freely accessed. As a system that seeks to allow two or more resources to interoperate, MRMPath represents an advance in bioinformatics tool development. As a practical matter, the MRMPath automated approach represents significant time savings to researchers.

This paper presents a framework consisting of a mathematical model and an algorithm for representation, analysis and exploration of the design space in redesign problems. The framework develops and extends the existing formalism of the Characteristics Properties Model (CPM) and Property Driven Design (PDD). A platform independent quantitative model based on formal log-ic is presented to map the characteristics and properties, as well as the relations and dependencies between them, along with solution conditions. The model is based on generalization of existing mathematical design models and is support-ed by the development of an algorithm enabling property driven design. The framework develops and extends the existing formalism of the Characteristics Properties Model (CPM) and Property Driven Design (PDD). A platform independent quantitative model based on formal log-ic is presented to map the characteristics and properties, as well as the relations and dependencies between them, along with solution conditions. The model is based on generalization of existing mathematical design models and is support-ed by the development of an algorithm enabling property driven design. We present TRAVIS ("TRajectory Analyzer and VISualizer"), a free program package for analyzing and visualizing Monte Carlo and molecular dynamics trajectories [1]. The aim of TRAVIS is to collect as many analyses as possible in one program, creating a powerful tool and making it unnecessary to use many different programs for evaluating simulations. This should greatly rationalize and simplify the workflow of analyzing trajectories. TRAVIS is written in C++, open-source freeware and licensed under the terms of the GNU General Public License (GPLv3). It is easy to install (platform independent, no external libraries) and easy to use. On this poster, we present some of the algorithms that are implemented in TRAVIS - many of them widely known for a long time, but some of them also to appear in literature for the first time. All shown analyses only require a standard MD trajectory as input data. Figure 1

Malware analysts are more and more overstrained by today´s flood of malware. Hence, the need for automated tools to assist malware analysis becomes apparent. A common approach of malware analysis is reverse engineering its components, namely (sub-)procedures. We present and evaluate simple procedure characteristics such as the number of instructions for their robustness with respect to different compilers, compilation options and even across operating systems. We identify robust characteristics and apply standard machine learning algorithms based on these characteristics to automatically identify already known procedures in new malware. This prevents analysts from repeatedly reversing known procedures.

This paper presents two new function block types for the IEC 61499 compliant 4DIAC runtime (FORTE). The function blocks are created in an attempt to increase the possibilities of reconfiguring function block applications during operation, without having to recreate the function block networks or recompile the FORTE runtime. The first block-type is created for generic I/O, and demonstrates how a single, platform-independent function block can be used to access the I/O subsystems of multiple PLC platforms. The second block-type allows the functionality of a block to be completely specified in the Lua scripting language, and thereby to be changed at runtime. Both block-types have been successfully tested, and appear to be a usable step in creating a more dynamic and flexible IEC 61499 implementation.

We present MPWide, a platform independent communication library for performing message passing between supercomputers. Our library couples several local MPI applications through a long distance network using, for example, optical links. The implementation is deliberately kept light-weight, platform independent and the library can be installed and used without administrative privileges. The only requirements are a C++ compiler and at least one open port to a wide area network on each site. In this paper we present the library, describe the user interface, present performance tests and apply MPWide in a large scale cosmological N-body simulation on a network of two computers, one in Amsterdam and the other in Tokyo.

In the present paper, we will describe the design and implementation of a real-time distributed system of Web crawling running on a cluster of machines. The system crawls several thousands of pages every second, includes a high-performance fault manager, is platform independent and is able to adapt transparently to a wide range of configurations without incurring additional hardware expenditure. We will then provide details of the system architecture and describe the technical choices for very high performance crawling. Finally, we will discuss the experimental results obtained, comparing them with other documented systems

The aim of dynamic reconfiguration is to allow a system to evolve incrementally from one configuration to another at run-time, without restarting it or taking it offline. In recent years, support for transparent dynamic reconfiguration has been added to middleware platforms, shifting the complexity required to enable dynamic reconfiguration to the supporting infrastructure. These approaches to dynamic reconfiguration are mostly platform-specific and depend on particular implementation approaches suitable for particular platforms. In this paper, we propose an approach to dynamic reconfiguration of distributed applications that is suitable for application implemented on top of different platforms. This approach supports a platform-independent view of an application that profits from reconfiguration transparency. In this view, requirements on the ability to reconfigure components are expressed in an abstract manner. These requirements are then satisfied by platform-specific realizations.
