Abstract

Abstract We present numerical solutions in a one-dimensional setting of quantum master equations that have been recently derived. We focus on the dynamics of a single heavy quark-antiquark pair in a Quark-Gluon Plasma in thermal equilibrium, in the so-called quantum Brownian regime where the temperature of the plasma is large in comparison with the spacing between the energy levels of the Q Q ¯ $$ Q\overline{Q} $$ system. The one-dimensional potential used in the calculations has been adjusted so as to produce numbers that are relevant for the phenomenology of the charmonium. The equations are solved using different initial states and medium configurations. Various temperature regimes are studied and the effects of screening and collisions thoroughly analyzed. Technical features of the equations are analyzed. The contributions of the different operators that control the evolution are discussed as a function of the temperature. Some phenomenological consequences are addressed.

Abstract

We investigate the charmonium and bottomonium production in pp collisions using the Wigner densities formalism. The Wigner density of the quarkonia is approximated by analytical 3-D isotropic harmonic oscillator Wigner densities with the same root-mean-square radius given by the solution of the Schrödinger equation. This approach reproduces quite well the available experimental transverse momentum and rapidity distributions.

Abstract

We investigate the real-time dynamics of a correlated heavy quarkantiquark pair inside the Quark-Gluon Plasma using new quantum master equations derived from first QCD principles and based on the work of Blaizot & Escobedo [4]. The full equations are directly numerically solved in one-dimension to reduce computing costs and is used to gain insight on the dynamics in both a static and evolving medium following a Björken-like temperature evolution. The effect of the initial state on the dynamics is also studied.

Abstract

In recent years, a significant theoretical effort has been made towards a dynamical description of quarkonia inside the Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP), using the open quantum systems formalism. In this framework, one can get a real-time description of a quantum system (here the quarkonium) in interaction with a thermal bath (the QGP) by integrating out the bath degrees of freedom and studying the system reduced density matrix. We investigate the real-time dynamics of a correlated heavy quark-antiquark pair inside the QGP using a quantum master equation previously derived from first QCD principles in [4]. The full equation is directly resolved in 1D to lessen computing costs and is used for the first time to gain insight on the dynamics in both a static and evolving medium following a Björken-like temperature evolution.

Abstract

We study bottomonium $b\bar{b}$ production in pp collisions as well as in heavy-ion collisions, using a quantal density matrix approach. The initial bottom (anti)quarks are provided by the PYTHIA event generator. We solve the Schr\"odinger equation for the $b\bar{b}$ pair, identifying the potential with the free energy, calculated with lattice QCD, to obtain the temperature dependent $b\bar{b}$ density matrix as well as the dissociation temperature. The formation of bottomonium is given by projection of the bottomonium density matrix onto the density matrix of the system. With this approach we describe the rapidity and transverse momentum distribution of the $\Upsilon$ (1S) and $\Upsilon$ (2S) in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=$ 5.02 TeV extending a similar calculation for the charmonium states. We employ the Remler formalism to study the $b\bar{b}$ production in heavy ion collisions in which the heavy quarks scatter elastically with partons from the quark gluon plasma (QGP). The elastic scattering of heavy (anti)quark in QGP is realized by the dynamical quasi-particle model (DQPM) and the expanding QGP is modeled by PHSD. We find that a reduction to 20 \% of the scattering cross section for a (anti)bottom quark with a QGP parton reproduces the experimental data. This suggests that due to color neutrality the scattering cross section of the small $b\bar{b}$ system with a parton is considerably smaller than twice the bottom-parton scattering cross section., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

We present a new model for the creation of \J mesons in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, which allows to follow the individual heavy quarks from their creation until the detector through the Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP), which is formed in these collisions and described by the EPOS2 event generator. The \cc quarks interact via a potential, based on results of lattice gauge calculations. The annihilation and creation of \J is described by a density matrix approach whose time evolution is studied in the expanding system. The comparison with PbPb data at $\sqrt{s}$=5.02 TeV shows that this model can describe simultaneously the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of the \J at low transverse momen, Comment: Computational error corrected. final version accepted by PRC

13. 'Learning by Doing': A Teaching Method for Active Learning in Scientific Graduate Education

Abstract

This article describes an active learning method for the teaching of physical sciences and mathematics to engineers. After defining the challenges involved in the training of engineers, we shall describe the answers provided by our method, "learning by doing" (named "Apprentissage Par l"Action" in French), by introducing four key points: real-life simulation, the management of non-success, the result requirement and the different roles of the teachers. An assessment of this experience is carried out which emphasizes the factors paramount in the success of this pedagogical innovation. Similarities between our experience and other well-known methods such as problem-based learning, problem solving and, more generally, the concept of learning by doing coined by John Dewey in his philosophy of education, are mentioned. Abstract

Prospects for quarkonium-production studies accessible during the upcoming high-luminosity phases of the CERN Large Hadron Collider operation after 2021 are reviewed. Current experimental and theoretical open issues in the field are assessed together with the potential for future studies in quarkonium-related physics. This will be possible through the exploitation of the huge data samples to be collected in proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions, both in the collider and fixed-target modes. Such investigations include, among others, those of: (i) J/psi and Upsilon produced in association with other hard particles; (ii) chi(c,b) and eta(c,b) down to small transverse momenta; (iii) the constraints brought in by quarkonia on gluon PDFs, nuclear PDFs, TMDs, GPDs and GTMDs, as well as on the low-x parton dynamics; (iv) the gluon Sivers effect in polarised-nucleon collisions; (v) the properties of the quark-gluon plasma produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions and of collective partonic effects in general; and (vi) double and triple parton scatterings., Comment: Latex, 115 pages, 55 figures, 4 tables. v2: Review published in Progress in Particle and Nuclear Physics

Abstract

We report on a benchmark calculation of the in-medium radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons within the EPOS3-Jet framework. The radiative energy loss is based on an extension of the Gunion-Bertsch matrix element for a massive projectile and a massive radiated gluon. On top of that, the coherence (LPM effect) is implemented by assigning a formation phase to the trial radiated gluons in a fashion similar to the approach in JHEP 07 (2011), 118, by Zapp, Stachel and Wiedemann. In a calculation with a simplified radiation kernel, we reproduce the radiation spectrum reported in the approach above. The radiation spectrum produces the LPM behaviour $dI/d\omega\propto\omega^{-1/2}$ up to an energy $\omega=\omega_c$, when the formation length of radiated gluons becomes comparable to the size of the medium. Beyond $\omega_c$, the radiation spectrum shows a characteristic suppression due to a smaller probability for a gluon to be formed in-medium. Next, we embed the radiative energy loss of low-virtuality jet partons into a more realistic "parton gun" calculation, where a stream of hard partons at high initial energy $E_\text{ini}=100$ GeV and initial virtuality $Q^2=E^2$ passes through a box of QGP medium with a constant temperature. At the end of the box evolution, the partons are hadronized using Pythia 8, and the jets are reconstructed with the FASTJET package. We find that the full jet energy loss in such scenario approaches a ballpark value reported by the ALICE collaboration. However, the calculation uses a somewhat larger value of the coupling constant $\alpha_s$ to compensate for the missing collisional energy loss of the low-virtuality jet partons., Comment: Hard Probes 2020 proceedings (online at Austin (TX), USA, June 1-5, 2020). 5 pages, 2 figures

Abstract

We study the propagation of charm quarks in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions at LHC within EPOSHQ model. The interactions of heavy quarks with the light partons in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions through the collisional and radiative processes lead to a large suppression of final D-meson spectra at high transverse momentum and a finite D-meson elliptic flow. Our results are in a good agreement with the available experimental data.

Abstract

EPOS3-Jet is an integrated framework for jet modelling in heavy ion collisions, where the initial hard (jet) partons are produced along with soft (medium) partons in the initial state EPOS approach. The jet partons then propagate in the hydrodynamically expanding medium. The energy and momentum lost by the jet partons is added to the hydrodynamic medium via the source terms. The full evolution proceeds in a concurrent mode, without separating hydrodynamic and jet parts. Abstract

International audience; Heavy flavor observables provide valuable information on the properties of the hot and dense quark-gluon plasma (QGP) created in ultrarelativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions. Various microscopic models have successfully described many of the observables associated with its formation. Their transport coefficients differ, however, due to different assumptions about the underlying interaction of the heavy quarks with the plasma constituents, different initial geometries and formation times, different hadronization processes, and a different time evolution of the QGP. In this study we present the transport coefficients of these models and investigate systematically how some of these assumptions influence the heavy quark properties at the end of the QGP expansion. For this purpose we impose on these models the same initial condition and the same model for the QGP expansion and show that both have considerable influence on RAA and v2.

Abstract

Several transport models have been employed in recent years to analyze heavy-flavor meson spectra in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. Heavy-quark transport coefficients extracted from these models with their default parameters vary, however, by up to a factor of 5 at high momenta. To investigate the origin of this large theoretical uncertainty, a systematic comparison of heavy-quark transport coefficients is carried out between various transport models. Within a common scheme devised for the nuclear modification factor of charm quarks in a brick medium of a quark-gluon plasma, the systematic uncertainty of the extracted drag coefficient among these models is shown to be reduced to a factor of 2, which can be viewed as the smallest intrinsic systematical error band achievable at present time. This indicates the importance of a realistic hydrodynamic evolution constrained by bulk hadron spectra and of heavy-quark hadronization for understanding the final heavy-flavor hadron spectra and extracting heavy-quark drag coefficient. The transverse transport coefficient is less constrained due to the influence of the underlying mechanism for heavy-quark medium interaction. Additional constraints on transport models such as energy loss fluctuation and transverse-momentum broadening can further reduce theoretical uncertainties in the extracted transport coefficients., Comment: 20 pages in ReVTex with 11 figures, final version to appear in PRC

Abstract

The future opportunities for high-density QCD studies with ion and proton beams at the LHC are presented. Four major scientific goals are identified: the characterisation of the macroscopic long wavelength Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP) properties with unprecedented precision, the investigation of the microscopic parton dynamics underlying QGP properties, the development of a unified picture of particle production and QCD dynamics from small (pp) to large (nucleus--nucleus) systems, the exploration of parton densities in nuclei in a broad ($x$, $Q^2$) kinematic range and the search for the possible onset of parton saturation. In order to address these scientific goals, high-luminosity Pb-Pb and p-Pb programmes are considered as priorities for Runs 3 and 4, complemented by high-multiplicity studies in pp collisions and a short run with oxygen ions. High-luminosity runs with intermediate-mass nuclei, for example Ar or Kr, are considered as an appealing case for extending the heavy-ion programme at the LHC beyond Run 4. Abstract

International audience; Energy-loss studies of hard particle probes produced in heavy ion collisions have often been used to get information on the interactions within the medium of a quark-gluon plasma (QGP). However, with the study of in-medium energy-loss of individual particles alone, it remains still ambiguous, whether the occured decrease in particle energy is caused by predominantly radiative or collisional energy-loss mechanisms. Focusing on the in-medium energy-loss of hard jet-partons, we propose additional studies of the angular jet-structure as a means to further constrain the energy-loss mechanisms.

Abstract

The influence of final-state radiation (FSR) of heavy quarks on observables in high-energy proton-proton collisions is studied. The transverse momentum correlation of D and Dbar mesons, which have been emitted with an azimuthal difference angle close to 180 degrees, is identified as an observable which is sensitive to the FSR process. We demonstrate this by performing calculations with the EPOS3+HQ model and with the event generator Pythia 6. The initial symmetric pT = pT' correlation for back-to-back pairs does not completely vanish in EPOS3+HQ, neither for the final DDbar pairs nor for the ccbar pairs before hadronisation. Also a significant difference in the shape of the correlation distribution for EPOS3+HQ and Pythia 6 is observed. Therefore, particle correlations in pp data offer the possibility to study several aspects of energy loss in heavy-ion collisions., 8 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Eur. Phys. J. C, references added
