Background Gender differences in asthma perception and control have been reported. The PROXIMA observational study assessed these outcomes in a cohort of Italian severe allergic asthma (SAA) patients. This post hoc analysis of the PROXIMA results was aimed at assessing gender differences in SAA in a real-world setting, focusing on disease perception and impact on quality of life (QoL). Methods The PROXIMA study was an observational, multicenter study, consisting of a cross-sectional and a prospective longitudinal phase, including adult outpatients diagnosed with SAA at step 4 requiring a therapeutic step-up. Patients on omalizumab treatment at baseline were included in the 12-month longitudinal phase. Disease control was assessed by the Asthma Control Questionnaire (ACQ) score, patients’ disease perception by the Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire (BIPQ), and QoL by the EuroQoL five-dimensional three-level questionnaire (EQ-5D-3 L) at baseline and after 6 and 12 months. Two regression models were used to evaluate the association between gender and BIPQ total score and EQ-5D-3L score, respectively. Results 357 patients (65% females) were analyzed for the cross-sectional phase and 99 (62.6% females) for the longitudinal phase. The prevalence of perennial and seasonal aeroallergens was similar between genders. ACQ score decreased similarly during omalizumab treatment at 6 and 12 months in both genders; no gender differences were observed in control rates. Asthma perception was worse among females at all study visits reaching statistical significance at 12 months (mean (SD) B-IPQ total score 41.8 (9.4) vs 35.6 (12.0); T test p-value (males vs females) Conclusions In this real-world setting, females confirmed to have a worse perception of asthma, feel it as more symptomatic and suffer a greater impact on their QoL, even though having similar baseline severity and obtaining similar level of control.

We present the methods and first results of the search for galaxy clusters in the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS). The adopted algorithm and the criterium for selecting the member galaxies are illustrated. Here we report the preliminary results obtained over a small area (7 sq. degrees), and the comparison of our cluster candidates with those found in the RedMapper and SZ Planck catalogues; the analysis to a larger area (148 sq. degrees) is currently in progress. KiDS-ESO-DR3 contains a multi-band source catalogue encompassing all publicly released tiles, a total of 440 survey tiles including the coadded images, weight maps, masks and source lists of 292 survey tiles of KiDS-ESO-DR3, adding to the 148 tiles released previously (50 in KiDS-ESO-DR1 and 98 in KiDS-ESO-DR2). We have started a systematic search for strong lens candidates in the ESO public survey KiDS based on the visual inspection ofmassive galaxies in the redshift range 0:1 < z < 0:5. As a pilot program we have inspected 100 deg2, which overlap with SDSS and where there are known lenses to use as a control sample. Taking advantage of the superb image quality of VST/OmegaCAM, the colour information and accurate model subtracted images, we have found 18 new lens candidates, for which spectroscopic confirmation will be needed to confirm their lensing nature and study the mass profile of the lensing galaxies. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

We present the Capodimonte Deep Field (OACDF), a deep field covering an area of 0.5 square degrees in the B, V, R optical bands plus six medium-band filters in the wavelength range 773--913 nm. The field reaches the following limiting AB magnitudes: B~25.3, V~24.8 and R~25.1 and contains about 50000 extended sources in the AB magnitude range 18 < R < 25 . Hence, it is intermediate between deep pencil beam surveys and very wide but shallow surveys. The main scientific goal of the OACDF is the identification and characterization of early-type field galaxies at different look-back times in order to study different scenarios of galaxy formation. Parallel goals include the search for groups and clusters of galaxies and the search for rare and peculiar objects (gravitational lenses, QSOs, halo White Dwarfs). In this paper we describe the OACDF data reduction, the methods adopted for the extraction of the photometric catalogs, the photometric calibration and the quality assessment of the catalogs by means of galaxy number counts, spectroscopic and photometric redshifts and star colors. We also present the first results of the search for galaxy overdensities. The depth of the OACDF and its relatively large spatial coverage with respect to pencil beam surveys make it a good tool for further studies of galaxy formation and evolution in the redshift range 0--1, as well as for stellar studies., 24 pages, accepted for pubblication on A&A

Weak lensing analysis is applied to a deep, one square degree r-band CFHT-Megacam image of the Abell 2163 field. The observed shear is fitted with Single Isothermal Sphere and Navarro-Frenk-White models to obtain the velocity dispersion and the mass, respectively; in addition, aperture densitometry is also used to provide a mass estimate at different distances from the cluster centre. The luminosity function is finally derived, allowing to estimate the mass/luminosity ratio. Previous weak lensing analyses performed at smaller scales produced somewhat contradictory results. We present the composite luminosity function (hereafter LF) of galaxies for 81 Abell clusters studied in our survey of the Northern Hemisphere, using DPOSS data processed by the CRoNaRio collaboration. The derived LF is very accurate due to the use of homogeneous data both for the clusters and the control fields and to the local estimate of the background, which takes into account the presence of large-scale structures and of foreground clusters and groups. The global composite LF is quite flat down to $M^*+5$ has a slope $\alpha\sim-1.0\pm0.2$ with minor variations from blue to red filters, and $M^*\sim-21.8,-22.0,-22.3$ mag ($H_0=50$ km s$^{-1}$ Mpc$^{-1}$) in the $g, r$ and $i$ filters, respectively (errors are detailed in the text). We find a significant difference between rich and poor clusters thus arguing in favour of a dependence of the LF on the properties of the environment., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures. We present preliminary results of a simple peak finding algorithm applied to catalogues of galaxies, extracted from the Second Palomar Sky Survey in the framework of the CRoNaRio project. All previously known Abell and Zwicky clusters in a test region of 5x5 sq. deg. are recovered and new candidate clusters are also detected. This algorithm represents an alternative way of searching for galaxy clusters with respect to that implemented and tested at Caltech on the same type of data (Gal et al. 1998)., in the proceeding of the XLIII SAIt national conference Mem. Context. The large-scale mass distribution around dark matter haloes hosting galaxy clusters provides sensitive cosmological information. Aims. In this work, we make use of a large photometric galaxy cluster sample, constructed from the public Third Data Release of the Kilo-Degree Survey, and the corresponding shear signal, to assess cluster masses and test the concordance ${\Lambda}$-cold dark matter (${\Lambda}$CDM) model. In particular, we study the weak gravitational lensing effects on scales beyond the cluster virial radius, where the signal is dominated by correlated and uncorrelated matter density distributions along the line-of-sight. The analysed catalogue consists of 6962 galaxy clusters, in the redshift range $0.1 \leq z \leq 0.6$ and with signal-to-noise ratio larger than 3.5. Methods. We perform a full Bayesian analysis to model the stacked shear profiles of these clusters. The adopted likelihood function considers both the small-scale 1-halo term, used primarily to constrain the cluster structural properties, and the 2-halo term, that can be used to constrain cosmological parameters. Results. We find that the adopted modelling is successful to assess both the cluster masses and the total matter density parameter, ${\Omega}_M$, when fitting shear profiles up to the largest available scales of 35 Mpc/h. Moreover, our results provide a strong observational evidence of the 2-halo signal in the stacked gravitational lensing of galaxy clusters, further demonstrating the reliability of this probe for cosmological studies. The main result of this work is a robust constraint on ${\Omega}_M$, assuming a flat ${\Lambda}$CDM cosmology. We describe how young students situate themselves with respect to astronomy through an identity framework that features four dimensions: interest, utility value, confidence, and conceptual knowledge. Overall, about 900 Italian students, from 5th to 9th grade (9-14 years old), were involved in the study. We tested our model using confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. Differences between girls and boys and across school levels were also investigated. Results show that interest has both a direct and an indirect effect on astronomy identity. The indirect effect of interest on identity is mediated by utility value. Moreover, confidence mediates the effect of interest on conceptual knowledge. Concerning differences between girls and boys, we found that the effect of interest on identity is greater for girls than for boys and that the utility value mediates the effect of interest on identity for boys but not for girls. Finally, our findings show also that the students' interest in astronomy and confidence in their performance decrease with age, with a potential negative impact on conceptual knowledge and future career choice in astronomy. The astronomy identity framework can be employed to examine the role of affective variables on performance and persistence in astronomy and to improve the design of teaching-learning activities that can potentially stimulate a lasting interest in astronomy.

By means of the $r$-band luminosity function (LF) of galaxies in a sample of about 4000 clusters detected by the cluster finder AMICO in the KiDS-DR3 area of about 400 deg$^2$, we studied the evolution with richness and redshift of the passive evolving (red), star-forming (blue), and total galaxy populations. This analysis was performed for clusters in the redshift range [0.1,0.8] and in the mass range [$10^{13} M_{\odot}$,$10^{15} M_{\odot}$]. To compute LFs, we binned the luminosity distribution in magnitude and statistically subtracted the background. Then, we divided the cluster sample in bins of both redshift and richness/mass. We stacked LF counts in each 2D bin for the total, red, and blue galaxy populations; finally, we fitted the stacked LF with a Schechter function and studied the trend of its parameters with redshift and richness/mass. We found a passive evolution with $z$ for the bright part of the LF for the red and total populations and no significant trends for the faint galaxies. The mass/richness dependence is clear for the density parameter $\Phi_{\star}$, increasing with richness, and for the total population faint end, which is shallower in the rich clusters., Comment: 15 pages, 12 figures, to published in A&A

A catalogue of galaxy clusters was obtained in an area of 414 sq deg up to a redshift $z\sim0.8$ from the Data Release 3 of the Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS-DR3), using the Adaptive Matched Identifier of Clustered Objects (AMICO) algorithm. The catalogue and the calibration of the richness-mass relation were presented in two companion papers. Here we describe the selection of the cluster central galaxy and the classification of blue and red cluster members, and analyze the main cluster properties, such as the red/blue fraction, cluster mass, brightness and stellar mass of the central galaxy, and their dependence on redshift and cluster richness. We use the Illustris-TNG simulation, which represents the state-of-the-art cosmological simulation of galaxy formation, as a benchmark for the interpretation of the results. A good agreement with simulations is found at low redshifts ($z \le 0.4$), while at higher redshifts the simulations indicate a lower fraction of blue galaxies than what found in the KiDS-AMICO catalogue: we argue that this may be due to an underestimate of star-forming galaxies in the simulations. The selection of clusters with a larger magnitude difference between the two brightest central galaxies, which may indicate a more relaxed cluster dynamical status, improves the agreement between the observed and simulated cluster mass and stellar mass of the central galaxy. The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an ongoing optical wide-field imaging survey with the OmegaCAM camera at the VLT Survey Telescope. It aims to image 1500 square degrees in four filters (ugri). The core science driver is mapping the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe, using weak lensing shear and photometric redshift measurements. Further science cases include galaxy evolution, Milky Way structure, detection of high-redshift clusters, and finding rare sources such as strong lenses and quasars. Here we present the third public data release (DR3) and several associated data products, adding further area, homogenized photometric calibration, photometric redshifts and weak lensing shear measurements to the first two releases. A dedicated pipeline embedded in the Astro-WISE information system is used for the production of the main release. Modifications with respect to earlier releases are described in detail. Photometric redshifts have been derived using both Bayesian template fitting, and machine-learning techniques. For the weak lensing measurements, optimized procedures based on the THELI data reduction and lensfit shear measurement packages are used. In DR3 stacked ugri images, weight maps, masks, and source lists for 292 new survey tiles (~300 sq.deg) are made available. The multi-band catalogue, including homogenized photometry and photometric redshifts, covers the combined DR1, DR2 and DR3 footprint of 440 survey tiles (447 sq.deg). Limiting magnitudes are typically 24.3, 25.1, 24.9, 23.8 (5 sigma in a 2 arcsec aperture) in ugri, respectively, and the typical r-band PSF size is less than 0.7 arcsec. The photometric homogenization scheme ensures accurate colors and an absolute calibration stable to ~2% for gri and ~3% in u. ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) diagnosis is essentially based on three elements: (1) typical chest pain that also represents the clinical counterpart of acute myocardial ischemia onset due to acute coronary occlusion and might be taken as time zero on which all successive delays should be calculated, (2) electrocardiogram (ECG) changes of the ST-T segment that are persistent (> 20 min) and evolve in time whereas they might soon present with a new pathological (> 40 ms duration) Q wave, and (3) critical abnormalities of high sensitivity cardiac troponin of either T or I types that should be higher than certain levels (> 5–14 pg/mL), which represent the respective and recommended upper reference limit. Although it should be important to have these limits measured in relation to the local population, and both gender and age ranges should be considered along with the specific essay used, short-term repetition of cardiac troponin assays may rule out the probability of acute coronary syndromes or confirm the presence of STEMI.

In this paper, we present the tools used to search for galaxy clusters in the Kilo Degree Survey (KiDS), and our first results. The cluster detection is based on an implementation of the optimal filtering technique that enables us to identify clusters as over-densities in the distribution of galaxies using their positions on the sky, magnitudes, and photometric redshifts. The contamination and completeness of the cluster catalog are derived using mock catalogs based on the data themselves. The optimal signal to noise threshold for the cluster detection is obtained by randomizing the galaxy positions and selecting the value that produces a contamination of less than 20%. Starting from a subset of clusters detected with high significance at low redshifts, we shift them to higher redshifts to estimate the completeness as a function of redshift: the average completeness is ~ 85%. An estimate of the mass of the clusters is derived using the richness as a proxy. We obtained 1858 candidate clusters with redshift 0 < z_c < 0.7 and mass 13.5 < log(M500/Msun) < 15 in an area of 114 sq. degrees (KiDS ESO-DR2). A comparison with publicly available Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-based cluster catalogs shows that we match more than 50% of the clusters (77% in the case of the redMaPPer catalog). We also cross-matched our cluster catalog with the Abell clusters, and clusters found by XMM and in the Planck-SZ survey; however, only a small number of them lie inside the KiDS area currently available., 13 pages, 15 figures. The morphology of clusters of galaxies may be described with a set of parameters which contain information about the formation and evolutionary history of these systems. In this paper we present a preliminary study of the morphological parameters of a sample of 28 compact Abell clusters extracted from DPOSS data. The morphology of galaxy clusters is parameterized by their apparent ellipticity, position angle of the major axis, centre coordinates, core radius and beta-model power law index. Our procedure provides estimates of these parameters by simultaneously fitting them all, overcoming some of the difficulties induced by sparse data and low number statistics typical of this kind of analysis. The science education literature shows that students have difficulty understanding what causes the seasons. Incorrect explanations are often due to a lack of knowledge about the physical mechanisms underlying this phenomenon. To address this, we present a module in which the students engage in quantitative measurements with a photovoltaic panel to explain changes to the sunray flow on Earth’s surface over the year. The activities also provide examples of energy transfers between the incoming radiation and the environment to introduce basic features of Earth’s climate. The module was evaluated with 45 secondary school students (aged 17–18) and a pre-/post-test research design. Analysis of students’ learning outcomes supports the effectiveness of the proposed activities.

The Kilo-Degree Survey (KiDS) is an optical wide-field imaging survey carried out with the VLT Survey Telescope and the OmegaCAM camera. KiDS will image 1500 square degrees in four filters (ugri), and together with its near-infrared counterpart VIKING will produce deep photometry in nine bands. Designed for weak lensing shape and photometric redshift measurements, the core science driver of the survey is mapping the large-scale matter distribution in the Universe back to a redshift of ~0.5. Secondary science cases are manifold, covering topics such as galaxy evolution, Milky Way structure, and the detection of high-redshift clusters and quasars. KiDS is an ESO Public Survey and dedicated to serving the astronomical community with high-quality data products derived from the survey data, as well as with calibration data. Public data releases will be made on a yearly basis, the first two of which are presented here. For a total of 148 survey tiles (~160 sq.deg.) astrometrically and photometrically calibrated, coadded ugri images have been released, accompanied by weight maps, masks, source lists, and a multi-band source catalog. A dedicated pipeline and data management system based on the Astro-WISE software system, combined with newly developed masking and source classification software, is used for the data production of the data products described here. The achieved data quality and early science projects based on the data products in the first two data releases are reviewed in order to validate the survey data. Early scientific results include the detection of nine high-z QSOs, fifteen candidate strong gravitational lenses, high-quality photometric redshifts and galaxy structural parameters for hundreds of thousands of galaxies.
