Ammonia (NH3) has been suggested as a fuel to attain zero carbon emissions. However, dealing with ammonia needs careful studies to reveal its limits as a suitable and promising fuel for broad applications within large power requirements. Chemical reaction mechanisms, widely employed in the modeling of these applications, are still under development. Therefore, this review is aimed to shed light on the current mechanisms available in the literature, highlighting modeling parameters that directly affect reaction rates which in turn govern the performance of each reaction mechanism. The key findings denote that most of the reaction mechanisms have poor performance when predicting combustion characteristics of ammonia flames such as laminar flame speed, ignition delay time, and nitrogen oxide emissions (NOx). In addition, none of the mechanisms have been optimised efficiently to predict properly experimental measurements for all these combustion characteristics. For example, Duynslaegher's mechanism perfectly predicted the laminar flame speed at lean and stoichiometric conditions, while Nakamura's reaction mechanism worked properly at rich conditions for the estimation of laminar flame speed. Although the aforementioned mechanisms achieved good estimation in terms of laminar flame speed, they showed poor performance against NO mole fractions. Similarly, Glarborg's (2018) mechanism properly estimated NO mole fractions at lean and stoichiometric flames while Wang's mechanism performed well in rich conditions for such emissions. Other examples are presented in this manuscript. Finally, the prediction performance of the assessed mechanisms varies based on operating conditions, mixing ratios, and equivalence ratios. Most mechanisms dealing with blended NH3 combinations gave good predictions when the concentration of hydrogen was low, while deteriorating with increasing hydrogen concentrations; a result of the shift in reactions that require more research.

Four studies were designed to determine whether 1) tumor necrosis factor-[alpha] (TNF) and the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) binding ligand, CD14, are produced by sheep adipose tissue; 2) nutritional reserves and/or short-term fasting affect circulating concentrations of TNF; 3) there is a relationship between TNF and metabolic factors in sheep; and 4) inflammation alters circulating concentrations of leptin. In Exp. 1 and 2, ewes were assigned, based on ultrasonic assessments of last-rib subcutaneous fat measurements to fat (fat thickness >1 cm; mean = 1.52 [+ or -] 0.03 cm) or thin (fat thickness 0.39). In Exp. 4, wethers were injected with LPS. Blood samples were collected every 15 min for 8 h following injection. Plasma concentration of leptin was not altered by LPS (P > 0.20). These results provide evidence: 1) of TNF-like immunoreactivity within fat tissue; 2) that elements within fatty tissues have CD14 that may allow adipocyte function to be directly affected by LPS; 3) that plasma concentrations of leptin are not altered by LPS treatment; and 4) that circulating concentrations of TNF are elevated with obesity in sheep. A high-throughput method is described, where the enantioselectivity of approximately 10 000 catalysts or biocatalysts can be determined per day. The method is based on electrospray mass spectrometric techniques using an eight-channel multiplexed (MUX) sprayer system connected to a time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The inlet of the ion source is controlled by a stepping rotor that is continuously moving from one sprayer to the next with a recording time of 100 ms for each channel and a delay time of 50 ms, thus allowing a spectrum to be obtained from each channel every 1.2 s. One cycle, where eight samples are being sprayed in parallel, requires around 70 s, which allows a 96-well microtiter plate to be screened in 14 min. Integration of two pseudo-enantiomers (S)-glycidyl phenyl ether and (R)-[D.sub.5]-glycidyl phenyl ether is necessary to quantify the enantiomeric excess (ee-value), where one enantiomer is isotopically labeled to allow easy identification of the mass spectrometric signals. Errors of ~2% for the ee-values indicate that in addition to the significant improvement in sample throughput this is also a precise method for high-throughput screening. This second-generation assay is useful for combinatorial enantioselective transition-metal catalysis and in the directed evolution of enantioselective enzymes. Knowledge of the absolute value of the second order nonlinear optical coefficient of materials plays a key role in assessing the performance. The second harmonic (SH) wave is employed to measure accurately the second order nonlinear coefficient (d36) of the narrow band gap semiconductor, mercury cadmium telluride (MCT).

The second order nonlinear coefficient (d[sub 36]) of the narrow band gap semiconductor, mercury cadmium telluride (MCT), is measured. Because MCT is strongly absorbing at a 1.06 μm wavelength, the measurement was performed by comparing the second harmonic intensity reflected from the material surface to the second harmonic intensity measured for a quartz sample in transmission. The analysis depends on the derivation of comparable expressions for the reflected and transmitted intensities. Using this approach a value of d[sub 36]=350±40 pm/V is obtained, a value much larger than those reported for similar zinc-blende type materials. The large magnitude of the MCT d[sub 36] is attributed to an electronic resonance enhancement. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
