16. Low-loss skimming waveguides with controllable mode leakage for on-chip saturable absorbers

Abstract

Emerging 3D photonic circuits would greatly benefit from the ability to integrate skimming waveguides with low loss and controllable inscription depth into photonic circuits. These waveguides allow for the interaction of guiding light directly with external modulation signals and enable programmable photonic circuits. Here, we report the fabrication of a novel photonic-lattice-like skimming waveguide (PLLSW) using femtosecond laser writing. Our method enables fine control of cross-sectional symmetry and writing depth of waveguides, achieving a minimum depth of 1 μm and a low insertion loss of 1 dB. Based on the PLLSW, we demonstrate on-chip light modulation by designing an evanescent-field-type saturable absorber through the coupling of a carbon nanotube film with the PLLSW, which exhibits saturation intensity from 20 to 200 MW/cm2 through the balanced twin-detector measurement. The strong nonlinear optical response of the PLLSW-based saturable absorber is further exploited to drive a Q-switched pulse laser at 1550 nm based on a fiber laser cavity. Our work demonstrates an effective method to integrate nonlinear optical materials into a glass chip for all-optical switching based on 3D waveguides, which holds great potential for the construction of large-scale programmable photonic circuits in the future.

32. Tunable optical nonlinearity of indium tin oxide for optical switching in epsilon-near-zero region

Abstract

The propagation of light in the epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) region of materials exhibits intriguing linear and nonlinear optical phenomenon that have been extensively exploited for a plethora of applications. Here, we show that the optical properties as well as the ENZ wavelength of magnetron-sputtered indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films could be judiciously engineered. The measurement of nonlinear optical properties reveals that the control of deposition conditions allows for the tuning of absorptive optical nonlinearity between saturable absorption and reverse saturable absorption. The ENZ wavelength for the ITO film is deduced as around 1553 nm. We obtain the highest third-order nonlinear absorption coefficient and imaginary part of third-order nonlinear susceptibility for the ITO thin film through Z-scan method as −50.56 cm/GW and ∼38 × 10−14 e.s.u. at 1050 nm, and −64.50 cm/GW and ∼45 × 10−14 e.s.u. at 1550 nm, respectively. We demonstrate further that the strong saturable absorption of the ITO thin film enables Q-switched pulse laser generation in ∼1050 and ∼1550 nm regions with tunable repetition rates and pulse energies. The present results suggest the great application potential of the ITO thin film in the field of nonlinear optical devices.

Abstract

Perovskite solar cells (PSC) offer a promising solution for building integrated photovoltaics (BIPVs) due to its high photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE). However, increasing the transparency of their functional layers dramatically decreases the PCE. Here, a computer controlled laser patterning method was proposed to directly turn PSC modules into semitransparent and with aesthetic artificial pattern, without additional complexities to the conventional PSCs fabrication process. A structured ST-PSC achieving a champion PCE of 17.5% with average visible transparency (AVT) of 18.2%, and a mini-module with 5 × 5 cm2 delivering a PCE of 9.1% with AVT of 37.7% were demonstrated. Rationally designed aesthetic patterns were imprinted on mini-modules, achieving a PCE of 14.4%. These results reveal a new route for low-cost facile fabricating high performance large-area aesthetic BIPV modules, and represent a big step forward toward the fabrication of solar cells with high efficiency and high transparency.

Abstract

Broadband near‐infrared (NIR) emitting materials have gained considerable attention for their applications in lighting, displays, sensing, bio‐imaging, and optical amplification. Recently, numerous excellent broadband NIR emitting materials are developed by introducing Cr3+, Bi+, or Ni2+ ions to various hosts. However, there is a notable absence of reports on ultra‐broadband NIR emitters spanning the entire telecommunication window as well as the NIR‐I (700–1000 nm) and NIR‐II (1000–1700 nm) biological windows activated by vanadium ions. Herein, the study presents, for the first time to the best of the knowledge, ultra‐broadband NIR emission ranging from 850 to 1600 nm (peaking at ≈1000 nm) at room temperature in vanadium‐doped phosphate glass. Detailed spectra and microscopic structure analysis reveal that two V3+‐emitting centers predominantly contribute to the ultra‐broadband emission, corresponding to 3T2(3F)→3A2(3F) spin‐allowed and 3T2(3F)→1E(1D) spin‐forbidden electron transitions of tetrahedrally coordinated V3+ ions. Notably, the tunability of NIR emission peak is demonstrated by adjusting the local glass structure or the vanadium doping content. Moreover, glass‐converted light‐emitting diodes (gc‐LEDs) are fabricated from vanadium‐doped glass, and the potential applications are demonstrated.
