Abstract The efficient use of renewable X/γ-rays or accelerated electrons for chemical transformation of CO2 and water to fuels holds promise for a carbon-neutral economy; however, such processes are challenging to implement and require the assistance of catalysts capable of sensitizing secondary electron scattering and providing active metal sites to bind intermediates. Here we show atomic Cu-Ni dual-metal sites embedded in a metal-organic framework enable efficient and selective CH3OH production (~98%) over multiple irradiated cycles. The usage of practical electron-beam irradiation (200 keV; 40 kGy min−1) with a cost-effective hydroxyl radical scavenger promotes CH3OH production rate to 0.27 mmol g−1 min−1. Moreover, time-resolved experiments with calculations reveal the direct generation of CO2 •‒ radical anions via aqueous electrons attachment occurred on nanosecond timescale, and cascade hydrogenation steps. Our study highlights a radiolytic route to produce CH3OH with CO2 feedstock and introduces a desirable atomic structure to improve performance.

Post-stroke depression (PSD) is a common cerebrovascular complication characterized by complex pathogenesis and poor treatment effects. Here, we tested the influence of differentially expressed genes (DEGs), non-targeted metabolites, and intestinal microbes on the occurrence and development of PSD. We acquired gene expression profiles for stroke patients, depression patients, and healthy controls from the Gene Expression Omnibus database. After screening for DEGs using differential expression analysis, we identified common DEGs in stroke and depression patients that were considered to form the molecular basis of PSD. Functional enrichment analysis of DEGs also revealed that the majority of biological functions were closely related to metabolism, immunity, the nervous system, and microorganisms, and we also collected blood and stool samples from healthy controls, stroke patients, and PSD patients and performed 16S rDNA sequencing and untargeted metabolomics. After evaluating the quality of the sequencing data, we compared the diversity of the metabolites and intestinal flora within and between groups. Metabolic pathway enrichment analysis was used to identify metabolic pathways that were significantly involved in stroke and PSD, and a global metabolic network was constructed to explore the pathogenesis of PSD. Additionally, we constructed a global regulatory network based on 16S rDNA sequencing, non-targeted metabolomics, and transcriptomics to explore the pathogenesis of PSD through correlation analysis. Our results suggest that intestinal flora associates the dysregulation of cerebral cortex gene expression and could potentially promote the occurrence of depression by affecting the metabolism of stroke patients. Our findings may be helpful in identifying new targets for the prevention and treatment of PSD.

Mode tracking based on correlation is a common method to achieve reasonable mode ordering in characteristic mode analysis (CMA). However, it is time-consuming to traverse the correlation calculation with all frequency points. For this reason, it is proposed to use information entropy in determining the frequency points of mode swapping in advance, which effectively improves the computational efficiency of CMA. Meanwhile, it is pointed out that for higher-order modes or electrically large structures, pseudo-degenerate modes are prone to appear, which results in mode swapping. In a large frequency range, the reactance property of a mode can be reversed, causing a change in the physical meaning of the mode. Therefore, CMA is best performed in the frequency range adapted to the structure size. Numerical analysis examples show the feasibility of this mode tracking method and confirm the rationality of mode performance analysis.

In this paper, patch antenna structures are studied to simultaneously excite the ground radiation mode and patch radiation mode. Based on the analysis of characteristic current distribution on the ground plane of patch antenna, an exciting method of the ground radiation mode is proposed. Then a dual-mode patch antenna of patch radiation and ground radiation is designed, which can achieve a wideband radiation using two modes resonating at two adjacent frequencies. To improve the radiation efficiency of the ground mode, the electric field distribution of the dual-mode antenna is investigated in detail and the electric field models for two modes are constructed. It is suggested that the additional notches introduced on the ground plane can enhance the resonance component of the ground mode. By this way, the modified patch antenna presents better radiation efficiency over the operating band. The measurement results show that the relative bandwidth of the patch antenna prototype with the notches is about 16.2%, defined by the reflection coefficient less than -10 dB. The proposed dual-mode antennas have the inherent characteristics of weak directivity, for that the antenna application scenarios also are indicated.

Nowadays, discovering new skeleton antifungal drugs is the direct way to address clinical fungal infections. Pyrylium salt SM21 was screened from a library containing 50,240 small molecules. Several studies about the antifungal activity and mechanism of SM21 have been reported, but the structure–activity relationship of pyrylium salts was not clear. To explore the chemical space of antifungal pyrylium salt SM21, a series of pyrylium salt derivatives were designed and synthesized. Their antifungal activity and structure-activity relationships (SAR) were investigated. Compared with SM21, most of the synthesized compounds exhibited equivalent or improved antifungal activities against Candida albicans in vitro. The synthesized compounds, such as XY10, XY13, XY14, XY16 and XY17 exhibited comparable antifungal activities against C. albicans with MIC values ranging from 0.47 to 1.0 μM. Fortunately, a compound numbered XY12 showed stronger antifungal activities and lower cytotoxicity was obtained. The MIC of compound XY12 against C. albicans was 0.24 μM, and the cytotoxicity decreased 20-fold as compared to SM21. In addition, XY12 was effective against fluconazole-resistant C. albicans and other pathogenic Candida species. More importantly, XY12 could significantly increase the survival rate of mice with a systemic C. albicans infection, which suggested the good antifungal activities of XY12 in vitro and in vivo. Our results indicated that structural modification of pyrylium salts could lead to the discovery of new antifungal drugs.

Abstract Background The use of kidneys from deceased donors with acute kidney injury (AKI) to expand the donor pool is an ongoing trend. Prior research on the utilization of AKI donor kidneys, especially from pediatric AKI donors, was limited and has been subject to small sample sizes. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of early post-transplantation outcomes in pediatric deceased donors with AKI. Methods This retrospective study compared the clinical results (including delayed graft function [DGF], acute rejection, patient and death-censored graft survival rates and renal function post-transplant) of kidney transplantation from deceased donors who were categorized as pediatric donors and adult donors with or without AKI, as defined by the Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KIDGO) criteria, at our center between January 2018 and December 2020. Results Of the 740 patients, 154 received kidneys from pediatric donors (with AKI group [n = 41]; without AKI group [n = 113]), and 586 received kidneys from adult donors (with AKI group [n = 218]; without AKI group [n = 368]). The baseline characteristics were similar in both cohorts. No significant difference was observed in 1-year patient survival, death-censored graft survival, or acute rejection between the AKI and non-AKI groups in both the pediatric and adult cohorts. However, compared with those transplanted with adult AKI kidneys, those transplanted with pediatric AKI kidneys showed a superior recovery of allograft function. In pediatric cohorts, no significant difference was found in serum creatinine/estimated glomerular filtration rate (SCr/eGFR) between the AKI and non-AKI groups, even in the first week post-transplant. In contrast, the post-transplant SCr/eGFR level of the AKI group recipients in adult cohorts did not recover to a level statistically similar to that of non-AKI recipients, even at 6-months post-transplant. Nonetheless, AKI kidney recipients were at an increased risk of DGF in both pediatric (34.1% vs. 16.8%) and adult (38.5% vs. 17.4%) cohorts. Conclusions Kidney transplantation from deceased donors with AKI has short-term clinical outcomes comparable to those of non-AKI kidney transplantation. Pediatric AKI kidneys have a superior recovery of allograft function. The transplant community should utilize this donor pool to minimize waiting-list-related mortalities.
