The combination of near edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy with nanoscale X-ray imaging is a powerful analytical tool for many applications in energy technologies, catalysis, which are critical to combat climate change, as well as microelectronics and life science. Materials from these scientific areas often contain key elements, such as Si, P, S, Y, Zr, Nb, and Mo as well as lanthanides, whose X-ray absorption edges lie in the so-called tender photon energy range 1.5-5.0 keV. Neither conventional grazing incidence grating nor crystal monochromators have high transmission in this energy range, thereby yielding the tender photon energy gap. To close this gap, a monochromator setup based on a multilayer coated blazed plane grating and plane mirror is devised. The measurements show that this novel concept improves the photon flux in the tender X-ray regime by two-orders-of-magnitude enabling previously unattainable laboratory and synchrotron-based studies. This setup is applied to perform nanoscale spectromicroscopy studies. The high photon flux provides sufficient sensitivity to obtain the electronic structure of Mo in platinum-free MoNi4 nanoparticles for electrochemical energy conversion. Additionally, it is shown that the chemical bonding of nano-structures in integrated circuits can be distinguished by the electronic configuration at the Si-K edge.

In this paper, we introduce the task of language-queried audio source separation (LASS), which aims to separate a target source from an audio mixture based on a natural language query of the target source (e.g., "a man tells a joke followed by people laughing"). A unique challenge in LASS is associated with the complexity of natural language description and its relation with the audio sources. To address this issue, we proposed LASS-Net, an end-to-end neural network that is learned to jointly process acoustic and linguistic information, and separate the target source that is consistent with the language query from an audio mixture. We evaluate the performance of our proposed system with a dataset created from the AudioCaps dataset. Experimental results show that LASS-Net achieves considerable improvements over baseline methods. Furthermore, we observe that LASS-Net achieves promising generalization results when using diverse human-annotated descriptions as queries, indicating its potential use in real-world scenarios. Audio captioning aims at using natural language to describe the content of an audio clip. Existing audio captioning systems are generally based on an encoder-decoder architecture, in which acoustic information is extracted by an audio encoder and then a language decoder is used to generate the captions. Training an audio captioning system often encounters the problem of data scarcity. Transferring knowledge from pre-trained audio models such as Pre-trained Audio Neural Networks (PANNs) have recently emerged as a useful method to mitigate this issue. However, there is less attention on exploiting pre-trained language models for the decoder, compared with the encoder. BERT is a pre-trained language model that has been extensively used in Natural Language Processing (NLP) tasks. Nevertheless, the potential of BERT as the language decoder for audio captioning has not been investigated. In this study, we demonstrate the efficacy of the pre-trained BERT model for audio captioning. Specifically, we apply PANNs as the encoder and initialize the decoder from the public pre-trained BERT models. We conduct an empirical study on the use of these BERT models for the decoder in the audio captioning model. Context and purpose There is an urgent need to develop vitamin D dietary recommendations for dark-skinned populations resident at high latitude. Using data from randomised controlled trials (RCTs) with vitamin D3-supplements/fortified foods, we undertook an individual participant data-level meta-regression (IPD) analysis of the response of wintertime serum 25-hydroxyvitamin (25(OH)D) to total vitamin D intake among dark-skinned children and adults residing at ≥ 40° N and derived dietary requirement values for vitamin D. Methods IPD analysis using data from 677 dark-skinned participants (of Black or South Asian descent; ages 5-86 years) in 10 RCTs with vitamin D supplements/fortified foods identified via a systematic review and predefined eligibility criteria. Outcome measures were vitamin D intake estimates across a range of 25(OH)D thresholds. Results To maintain serum 25(OH)D concentrations ≥ 25 and 30 nmol/L in 97.5% of individuals, 23.9 and 27.3 µg/day of vitamin D, respectively, were required among South Asian and 24.1 and 33.2 µg/day, respectively, among Black participants. Overall, our age-stratified intake estimates did not exceed age-specific Tolerable Upper Intake Levels for vitamin D. The vitamin D intake required by dark-skinned individuals to maintain 97.5% of winter 25(OH)D concentrations ≥ 50 nmol/L was 66.8 µg/day. This intake predicted that the upper 2.5% of individuals could potentially achieve serum 25(OH)D concentrations ≥ 158 nmol/L, which has been linked to potential adverse effects in older adults in supplementation studies. Conclusions Our IPD-derived vitamin D intakes required to maintain 97.5% of winter 25(OH)D concentrations ≥ 25, 30 and 50 nmol/L are substantially higher than the equivalent estimates for White individuals. These requirement estimates are also higher than those currently recommended internationally by several agencies, which are based predominantly on data from Whites and derived from standard meta-regression based on aggregate data. Much more work is needed in dark-skinned populations both in the dose-response relationship and risk characterisation for health outcomes. Highlights • Added sugar, saturated fat, sodium intake higher from snacks eaten at home vs. away. • Snacks eaten at home provided about one fourth of daily calories from added sugars. • With few exceptions, snack types consumed were similar at home and away from home., Snacking away from home is thought to contribute to excess intake of energy, added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium compared to snacking at home. Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2009–2016, we examined associations between location of snack consumption (at home or away from home) and added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium intake from food and beverage snacks in U.S. adolescents aged 12–19. We also compared top snack contributors to intakes of these nutrients by location of consumption. Nutrient intake (added sugars, saturated fat, and sodium) from food and beverage snacks was estimated by the average intake from two 24-hour dietary recalls, and location of consumption for each snack was reported by participants as at home or away from home. Adjusted mixed effects models were performed to examine associations between nutrient intakes and the location of consumption. Punctuation is critical in understanding natural language text. Currently, most automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems do not generate punctuation, which affects the performance of downstream tasks, such as intent detection and slot filling. This gives rise to the need for punctuation restoration. Recent work in punctuation restoration heavily utilizes pre-trained language models without considering data imbalance when predicting punctuation classes. In this work, we address this problem by proposing a token-level supervised contrastive learning method that aims at maximizing the distance of representation of different punctuation marks in the embedding space. Ru/C multilayer mirrors with a period of 2.5 nm and 150 bilayers were studied under high-temperature annealing and long-term storage. A general increase in the reflectivity was observed after annealing at different temperatures from 300 to 700 &deg, C, during which a maximum enhancement of around 14% was obtained at 600 &deg, C. The highest reflectance measured at 8 keV reached 69% after 600 &deg, C annealing. This was accompanied by a 6% expansion of the layer period, which could be mainly attributed to carbon layers. The surface roughness was not affected by the annealing, whereas the polycrystallization of Ru with crystallographic planes parallel to the layer interfaces was enhanced. Combining the transmission-electron microscopy measurements, it was found that the interdiffusion at the C-on-Ru interface was significantly suppressed. The decreased interdiffusion, enhanced optical contrast, and larger multilayer period were the main reasons for the increased reflectance. The 600 &deg, C annealed Ru/C multilayer remained intact after 13 months of storage in air, which also demonstrated significant temporal stability.

Ultrathin Pd/B4C multilayers are suitable X-ray mirrors working at the photon energy region of 7&ndash, 20 keV. To further improve the layer structure, Pd/B4C multilayers with a d-spacing of 2.5 nm were fabricated by magnetron sputtering using the heavy noble gas Kr and compared with the conventional ones fabricated by Ar. Although the Kr-sputtering process can work at a lower pressure, the interface width&mdash, especially the interface roughness&mdash, is a little larger than that made by Ar. A stronger polycrystallization and a lower content of sputter gas atoms were found in the Kr-made sample, which can be explained by the joint effect from less recoiled particles and lower sputtering pressure. A good reflectance of 68% of the Kr made multilayer was measured at 10 keV, which is only slightly lower than that of the Ar made sample (71%).

Differential deposition and profile coating are two common deterministic fabrication methods for figure correction of high-precision mirrors. The generation of the desired particle distribution on the substrate as the growing function is an important prerequisite, especially for two-dimensional correction. A model of particle distribution considering the etched ring shape, mask structure, and mask distance between the target and substrate is established. The model is verified by deposition experiments using a series of circular holes with different hole sizes and distances of the mask from the substrate. According to the model, a smallest deposition beam width of 2.79 mm can be obtained using a hole with a 3 mm diameter. The shape of the particle distribution gradually changes from convex to concave as the mask moves away from the substrate for different holes. A two-dimensional figure correction of a flat mirror was demonstrated using a hole with a 6 mm diameter. The peak-to-valley (PV) value is reduced from 74.23 nm to 10.09 nm, and the root mean square (RMS) value is reduced from 18.38 nm to 1.36 nm within a 130 &times, 20 mm area. The model could provide useful guidance for high-precision two-dimensional figure correction applications.

International audience; We characterize nano-scale periodic Sc/Mg two-layer, Sc/Mg/Co tri-layers and Sc/Co/Mg/Co quadri-layer designed as dispersive elements for x-ray spectroscopy in the nitrogen K range (390 eV). The samples are prepared by magnetron sputtering with Mg and Sc layers being a few nanometers thick and Co layers being of sub-nanometric thickness. We apply non-destructive (x-ray reflectivity and x-ray fluorescence in standing wave mode) and destructive (transmission electron microscopy) techniques to obtain a relevant description of the deposited stacks. It turns out that a strong interdiffusion takes place in the two-layer leading to poor reflective properties. Interdiffusion also occurs in the tri-layers and quadri-layer but between the Sc and Co layers. These systems can be considered as periodic ScCo/Mg two-layers with well-defined layers. As a consequence, the Sc/Co/Mg/Co multilayer is found interesting to use for spectroscopy as a reflectance of 32% is expected in the N K range in the water window range.

Cr/V multilayer mirrors are suitable for applications in the &ldquo, water window&rdquo, spectral ranges. To study factors influencing the internal microstructure of Cr/V multilayers, multilayers with different vanadium layers thicknesses varying from 0.6 nm to 4.0 nm, and a fixed thickness (1.3 nm) of chromium layers, were fabricated and characterized with a set of experimental techniques. The average interface width characterizing a cumulative effect of different structure irregularities was demonstrated to exhibit non-monotonous dependence on the V layer thickness and achieve a minimal value of 0.31 nm when the thickness of the V layers was 1.2 nm. The discontinuous growth of very thin V films increased in roughness as the thickness of V layers decreased. The columnar growth of the polycrystalline grains in both materials became more pronounced with increasing thickness, resulting in a continuous increase in the interface width to a maximum of 0.9 nm for a 4 nm thickness of the V layer.

International audience; By combining Kossel diffraction with particle induced X-ray emission, we have developed a new methodology to analyze nano-scale thin films. We report the Kossel diffraction generated by irradiating Pd/Y based nano-scale periodic multilayers with 2 MeV protons. The intensity of characteristic Pd Lα X-ray emission is measured as a function of the detection angle (grazing exit). An oscillation of its intensity is observed when the detection angle varies around the Bragg angle, which corresponds to the energy of the emission and the period of the multilayer. Use of the X-ray color camera enables the whole setup to be fixed so that no angular scan is required, greatly simplifying the experimental condition. From the features of the Kossel curves, we are able to deduce that nitrided Pd/Y multilayers exhibit much less layer intermixing than the non-nitrided multilayers. The experimental results show that it is possible to distinguish by the shape of Kossel curves of multilayers with B 4 C barrier layers located in different interfaces. This demonstrates that Kossel diffraction is structural sensitive.

In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission - eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. In particular, its wide field monitoring capabilities will be highly instrumental to detect the electro-magnetic counterparts of gravitational wave sources. Gratings, one of the most important energy dispersive devices, are the fundamental building blocks for the majority of optical and optoelectronic systems. The grating period is the key parameter that limits the dispersion and resolution of the system. With the rapid development of large X-ray science facilities, gratings with periodicities below 50 nm are in urgent need for the development of ultrahigh-resolution X-ray spectroscopy. However, the wafer-scale fabrication of nanogratings through conventional patterning methods is difficult. Herein, we report a maskless and high-throughput method to generate wafer-scale, multilayer gratings with period in the sub-50 nm range. They are fabricated by a vacancy epitaxy process and coated with X-ray multilayers, which demonstrate extremely large angular dispersion at approximately 90 eV and 270 eV. The developed new method has great potential to produce ultrahigh line density multilayer gratings that can pave the way to cutting edge high-resolution spectroscopy and other X-ray applications., Fabrication of wafer-scale nanogratings for X-ray spectroscopy is difficult especially for very high line densities. The authors use vacancy epitaxy to fabricate sub-50-nm-periodicity gratings, coated with multilayers for efficient operation, for use in ultra-high resolution x-ray spectroscopy.

International audience; The Kossel effect is the diffraction by a periodically structured medium, of the characteristic X-ray radiation emitted by the atoms of the medium. We show that multilayers designed for X-ray optics applications are convenient periodic systems to use in order to produce the Kossel effect, modulating the intensity emitted by the sample in a narrow angular range defined by the Bragg angle. We also show that excitation can be done by using photons (X-rays), electrons or protons (or charged particles), under near normal or grazing incident geometries, which makes the method relatively easy to implement. The main constraint comes from the angular resolution necessary for the detection of the emitted radiation. This leads to small solid angles of detection and long acquisition times to collect data with sufficient statistical significance. Provided this difficulty is overcome, the comparison or fit of the experimental Kossel curves, i.e., the angular distributions of the intensity of an emitted radiation of one of the element of the periodic stack, with the simulated curves enables getting information on the depth distribution of the elements throughout the multilayer. Thus the same kind of information obtained from the more widespread method of X-ray standing wave induced fluorescence used to characterize stacks of nanometer period, can be obtained using the Kossel effect.

For photon energies of 1 – 5 keV, blazed gratings with multilayer coating are ideally suited for the suppression of stray and higher orders light in grating monochromators. We developed and characterized a blazed 2000 lines/mm grating coated with a 20 period Cr/C- multilayer. The multilayer d-spacing of 7.3 nm has been adapted to the line distance of 500 nm and the blaze angle of 0.84° in order to provide highest efficiency in the photon energy range between 1.5 keV and 3 keV. Efficiency of the multilayer grating as well as the reflectance of a witness multilayer which were coated simultaneously have been measured. An efficiency of 35% was measured at 2 keV while a maximum efficiency of 55% was achieved at 4 keV. In addition, a strong suppression of higher orders was observed which makes blazed multilayer gratings a favorable dispersing element also for the low X-ray energy range.

We present the observation of the angular distribution of a characteristic x-ray emission through a periodic multilayer. The emission coming from the substrate on which the multilayer is deposited is used for this purpose. It is generated upon proton irradiation through the multilayer and detected with an energy sensitive CCD camera. The observed distribution in the low detection angle range presents a clear dip at a position characteristic of the emitting element. Thus, such a device can be envisaged as a spectrometer without mechanical displacement and using various ionizing sources (electrons, x-rays, ions), their incident direction being irrelevant., 3 pages, 2 figures, 13 references

Pd/Y multilayers are high reflectance mirrors designed to work in the 7.5-11 nm wavelength range. Samples, prepared by magnetron sputtering, are deposited with or without B4C barrier layers located at the interfaces of Pd and Y layers to reduce interdiffusion, which is expected by calculating mixing enthalpy of Pd and Y. Grazing incident x-ray reflectometry is used to characterize these multilayers. B4C barrier layers are found effective on reducing the Pd-Y interdiffusion. Details of the composition of the multilayers are revealed by hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy under x-ray standing waves effect. It consists in measuring the photoemission intensity from samples that perform an angular scan in the region corresponding to the multilayer period and the incident photon energy according to the Bragg law. The experimental result indicates that Pd does not chemically react with B nor C at the Pd-B4C interfaces while Y does at the Y-B4C interfaces. The formation of Y-B or Y-C chemical compound can be the reason why the interfaces are stabilized. By comparing the experimentally obtained angular variation of the characteristic photoemission with the theoretical calculation, the depth distribution of each component element can be interpreted., 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 tables, 19 references

International audience; V/Sc multilayer has been developed as a promising candidate for the water window region working near both the Sc-L edge (3.11 nm) and the V-L edge (2.42 nm). To meet the application requirements, its thermal and temporal stability were studied. A series of V/Sc multilayers with a d-spacing ranging from 1.59 to 1.62 nm and a number of bilayers of 100 and 400 was fabricated. Different samples were annealed at temperatures from 100 to 300 °C. Grazing incidence X-ray reflectivity and soft X-ray (SXR) reflectivity measurements showed that the multilayer structure and reflectivity remain mostly unchanged at 100 °C. An obvious deterioration started at 200 °C, while the SXR reflectivity drops close to zero at 250 °C. The multilayer structure completely broke down at 300 °C. Both X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy measurements demonstrated a severe crystallization occurring at 250 °C. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements have further confirmed a significant elemental mixture occurring after 250 °C annealing. The severe intermixing and polycrystallization resulted in the degradation of the multilayer structure. On the other hand, the V/Sc multilayer is relatively stable after half year storage in air environment showing a slight decrease of SXR reflectivity from 18.4% to 16.5%.

V/Sc multilayer is experimentally demonstrated for the first time as a high reflectance mirror for the soft X-ray water window region. It primarily works at above the Sc-L edge (λ = 3.11 nm) under near normal incidence while a second peak appears at above the V-L edge (λ = 2.42 nm) under grazing incidence. The V/Sc multilayer fabricated with a d-spacing of 1.59 nm and 30 bilayers has a smaller interface width (σ = 0.27 and 0.32 nm) than the conventional used Cr/Sc (σ = 0.28 and 0.47 nm). For V/Sc multilayer with 30 bilayers, the introduction of B4C barrier layers has little improvement on the interface structure. As the number of bilayers increasing to 400, the growth morphology and microstructure of the V/Sc layers evolves with slightly increased crystallization. Nevertheless, the surface roughness remains to be 0.25 nm. A maximum soft X-ray reflectance of 18.4% is measured at λ = 3.129 nm at 9° off-normal incidence using the 400-bilayers V/Sc multilayer. According to the fitted model, an s-polarization reflectance of 5.2% can also be expected at λ = 2.425 nm under 40° incidence. Based on the promising experimental results, further improvement of the reflectance can be achieved by using a more stable deposition system, exploring different interface engineering methods and so on.

Extreme ultraviolet and soft X-ray (XUV) multilayer optics have experienced significant development over the past few years, particularly on controlling the spectral characteristics of light for advanced applications like EUV photolithography, space observation, and accelerator- or lab-based XUV experiments. Both planar and three dimensional multilayer structures have been developed to tailor the spectral response in a wide wavelength range. For the planar multilayer optics, different layered schemes are explored. Stacks of periodic multilayers and capping layers are demonstrated to achieve multi-channel reflection or suppression of the reflective properties. Aperiodic multilayer structures enable broadband reflection both in angles and wavelengths, with the possibility of polarization control. The broad wavelength band multilayer is also used to shape attosecond pulses for the study of ultrafast phenomena. Narrowband multilayer monochromators are delivered to bridge the resolution gap between crystals and regular multilayers. High spectral purity multilayers with innovated anti-reflection structures are shown to select spectrally clean XUV radiation from broadband X-ray sources, especially the plasma sources for EUV lithography. Significant progress is also made in the three dimensional multilayer optics, i.e., combining micro- and nanostructures with multilayers, in order to provide new freedom to tune the spectral response. Several kinds of multilayer gratings, including multilayer coated gratings, sliced multilayer gratings, and lamellar multilayer gratings are being pursued for high resolution and high efficiency XUV spectrometers/monochromators, with their advantages and disadvantages, respectively. Multilayer diffraction optics are also developed for spectral purity enhancement. New structures like gratings, zone plates, and pyramids that obtain full suppression of the unwanted radiation and high XUV reflectance are reviewed. Based on the present achievement of the spectral tailoring multilayer optics, the remaining challenges and opportunities for future researches are discussed.

Reactive sputtering with a mixture of argon and nitrogen (N2 partial pressure of 4%, 8%, and 15%) as the working gas is used to develop the high reflectance Pd/B4C multilayers for soft X-ray region application. Compared to the pure Ar fabricated sample, the interface roughness of the nitridated multilayer is slightly increased while the compressive stress is essentially relaxed from -623 MPa (pure Ar) to -85 MPa (15% N2). A maximum reflectance of 32% is measured at the wavelength of 9.5 nm for the multilayer fabricated with 15% N2. After storing the multilayers in an air environment for 6-17 months, a distinct aging effect is observed on the nitridated samples. The transmission electron microscopy results indicate that a large part of the top layers of the nitridated samples is deteriorated with severe interdiffusion, essential decrease in d-spacing, and compacted multilayer structure. The deterioration is less pronounced for the multilayers fabricated with a higher ratio of N2. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy reveals that the concentration of nitrogen and boron in the degraded area is much reduced compared to the intact layers. A primitive model of upward diffusion of nitrogen and boron is proposed to explain the aging effects of the nitridated structure.

We use hard x-ray photoemission spectroscopy combined with x-ray standing waves to characterize a series of Pd/Y multilayers designed to work in the 7.5-11 nm wavelength range. The samples, prepared by magnetron sputtering, are deposited either with or without nitrogen introduced in the sputtering gas. The aimed period of the samples is 4 nm. The experiments consist in obtaining the core level spectra of the various elements for a series of grazing angles. The angular scan is made in the range given by the Bragg law, the multilayer period and the incident photon energy. Given the period of the multilayer and the presence of a 2.5 nm-thick B4C capping layer, the photon energy is chosen to be 10 keV in order to probe the first 5-6 periods of the stack. Thus the Bragg angle is a little less than 1°. Rotating the sample enables putting the nodes of the electric field at some particular location of the stack, thus to make the excitation depth-selective, probing one interface or another or the center of one given layer. The changes of the chemical shift in the Pd 2p and 3d, Y 2p and 3d, O 1s, N 1s, C 1s and B 1s as a function of the angle, that is to say as a function of the location in the stack will give information about the possible interfacial process taking place in the Pd/Y multilayers.

Optics express 25(15), 17431 - 17445 (2017). doi:10.1364/OE.25.017431, We have coupled a nano-focused synchrotron beam into a planar x-ray waveguide structure through a thinned cladding, using the resonant beam coupling (RBC) geometry, which is well established for coupling of macroscopic x-ray beams into x-ray waveguides. By reducing the beam size and using specially designed waveguide structures with multiple guiding layers, we can observe two reflected beams of similar amplitudes upon resonant mode excitation. At the same time, the second reflected beam is shifted along the surface by several millimeters, constituting a exceptionally large Goos-Hänchen effect. We evidence this effect based on its characteristic far-field patterns resulting from interference of the multiple reflected beams.
