Abstract Objective This cross‐sectional study aimed to determine the epidemiology of olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions related to COVID‐19 in China. Methods This study was conducted by 45 tertiary Grade‐A hospitals in China. Online and offline questionnaire data were obtained from patients infected with COVID‐19 between December 28, 2022, and February 21, 2023. The collected information included basic demographics, medical history, smoking and drinking history, vaccination history, changes in olfactory and gustatory functions before and after infection, and other postinfection symptoms, as well as the duration and improvement status of olfactory and gustatory disorders. Results Complete questionnaires were obtained from 35,566 subjects. The overall incidence of olfactory and taste dysfunction was 67.75%. Being female or being a cigarette smoker increased the likelihood of developing olfactory and taste dysfunction. Having received four doses of the vaccine or having good oral health or being a alcohol drinker decreased the risk of such dysfunction. Before infection, the average olfactory and taste VAS scores were 8.41 and 8.51, respectively; after infection, they decreased to 3.69 and 4.29 and recovered to 5.83 and 6.55 by the time of the survey. The median duration of dysosmia and dysgeusia was 15 and 12 days, respectively, with 0.5% of patients having symptoms lasting for more than 28 days. The overall self‐reported improvement rate was 59.16%. Recovery was higher in males, never smokers, those who received two or three vaccine doses, and those that had never experienced dental health issues, or chronic accompanying symptoms. Conclusions The incidence of dysosmia and dysgeusia following infection with the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus is high in China. Incidence and prognosis are influenced by several factors, including sex, SARS‐CoV‐2 vaccination, history of head‐facial trauma, nasal and oral health status, smoking and drinking history, and the persistence of accompanying symptoms.

Abstract In the process of conservation mounting, starch paste made from wheat flour is the glue of choice to paste reinforcing strips and backing papers, often Xuan paper, for mending and decorating aged and damaged paper-based Chinese artworks. To keep objects intact and select appropriate conservation materials, this research explored the applicability of near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy coupled with multivariate analysis for the characterization of contemporary unsized Xuan paper with and without starch. In particular, partial least squares (PLS) regression was used to predict the degree of polymerization (DP) of the paper, i.e., one of the most important properties of paper materials, and principal component analysis (PCA) was used to detect starch and to distinguish between papers with different amounts of starch. Using 12 contemporary unsized Xuan papers, the NIR-PLS method for DP prediction was validated, and the best-performed model was generated using the logarithmic transformation of DP−1 as a response variable, with root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of DP 128. The NIR-PCA method was also found to be applicable to separate starch-free papers and papers treated with starch, and the results indicate that the higher the content of starch, the better PCA classification performs. This research provides supporting data for the non-destructive characterization of Xuan paper-based objects and differentiates between Xuan paper before and after treatment with starch.

Abstract Myocardial infarction (MI) is a critical global health challenge, with current treatments limited by the complex MI microenvironment, particularly the excessive oxidative stress and intense inflammatory responses that exacerbate cardiac dysfunction and MI progression. Herein, a mannan‐based nanomedicine, Que@MOF/Man, is developed to target the inflammatory infarcted heart and deliver the antioxidative and anti‐inflammatory agent quercetin (Que), thereby facilitating a beneficial myocardial microenvironment for cardiac repair. The presence of mannan on the nanoparticle surface enables selective internalization by macrophages rather than cardiomyocytes. Que@MOF/Man effectively neutralizes reactive oxygen species in macrophages to reduce oxidative stress and promote their differentiation into a reparative phenotype, reconciling the inflammatory response and enhancing cardiomyocyte survival through intercellular communication. Owing to the recruitment of macrophages into inflamed myocardium post‐MI, in vivo, administration of Que@MOF/Man in MI rats revealed the specific distribution into the injured myocardium compared to free Que. Furthermore, Que@MOF/Man exhibited favorable results in resolving inflammation and protecting cardiomyocytes, thereby preventing further myocardial remodeling and improving cardiac function in MI rats. These findings collectively validate the rational design of an inflammation‐targeted delivery strategy to mitigate oxidative stress and modulate the inflammation response in the injured heart, presenting a therapeutic avenue for MI treatment.

This study performs a series of mechanical tests, quasi-static and dynamic, on CuCoCrFeNi high-entropy alloys (HEAs) using an experimental setup to explore the performance of Cu-based HEAs in shaped charges. It derives the parameters for the Johnson–Cook constitutive model through fitting. A static penetration test is conducted with a small cone angle and a thin-walled liner. The outcomes are then compared to simulation data generated by AUTODYN software. They indicated that the CuCoCrFeNi HEA liner can produce a shaped-charge jet that achieves both penetration and reaming effects when driven by explosives. In a C45 steel target, the diameter of the penetration hole is 46.43% of the charge diameter. The experimental findings align closely with the simulations, indicating discrepancies of less than 12.13% in the diameters of the penetration holes and ∼2.56% in penetration depths. Hence, the numerical simulation approach and its parameters can be utilized to investigate the penetration characteristics of Cu-based HEA jets, providing a groundwork for future optimization of HEA-shaped charge designs.

Electroacupuncture (EA) is a neuroregulatory therapy for depression. Nonetheless, the effects of EA on the gut microbiome in mice models of depression are not well established. Here, using a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS) model in mice, we evaluated the antidepressant effects of EA and changes in gut microbiota with behavioral tests and 16S rRNA gene sequencing. The results found that EA increased the time spent in the center area of the open-field test and the percentage of sucrose preference and reduced the immobility time in the tail suspension test in CUMS-treated mice. Furthermore, the genus Lachnoclostridium, Ruminococcaceae_UCG-002 and Rikenellaceae_RC9_gut_group were enriched in the CUMS group, which was positively correlated with depressive-like behaviors. Whereas phylum Actinobacteria and genus Allobaculum, Bifidobacterium, Dubosiella, Rikenella and Ileibacterium were enriched in the EA and CUMS + EA groups, all of which were negatively correlated with depressive-like behaviors. This study characterizes gut microbiota under EA treatment and provides new insights into the association of anti-depressive-like effects of EA and gut microbiota.

Abstract Time-resolved X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (TXPS) is a well-established technique to probe coherent nuclear wavepacket dynamics using both table-top and free-electron-based ultrafast X-ray lasers. Energy resolution, however, becomes compromised for a very short pulse duration in the sub-femtosecond range. By resonantly tuning the X-ray pulse to core-excited states undergoing Auger decay, this drawback of TXPS can be mitigated. While resonant Auger-electron spectroscopy (RAS) can recover the vibrational structures not hidden by broadband excitation, the full reconstruction of the wavepacket is a standing challenge. Here, we theoretically demonstrate how the complete information of a nuclear wavepacket, i.e., the populations and relative phases of the vibrational states constituting the wavepacket, can be retrieved from time-resolved RAS (TRAS) measurements. Thus, TRAS offers key insights into coupled nuclear and electronic dynamics in complex systems on ultrashort timescales, providing an alternative to leverage femtosecond and attosecond X-ray probe pulses.

This paper presents a novel wideband low-profile linear-to-circular polarizer based on high refractive-index metamaterials in the X band. The proposed design is a multilayer structure that is built from two kinds of metamaterial unit cells consisting of 4-H-shaped strips and 1-H-shaped strips. Combining the two unit cells realizes the flexible and independent control of the refractive index difference between two orthogonal E-field components and thus achieves a consistent 90-degree phase delay over a wide bandwidth. Moreover, the proposed unit cell shows a high refractive index, which contributes to lowering the height of the LP-CP polarizer. In order to improve the axial ratio (AR) bandwidth, two impedance-matching layers are introduced to combat the reflection loss on the metamaterial-air boundary. Nevertheless, the proposed design can provide a wide 3 dB AR bandwidth of 37.7% and a low insertion loss of 0.5 dB with a thin profile of $0.21~{\lambda }_{0}$ . The prototype was fabricated and measured, while the experimental results agree well with the simulated ones, thus validating the working mechanism and its practical feasibility.

In order to address the problem of incomplete data set of real seismic impact of cultural relics in collections, we propose a small sample set oriented center-of-mass positioning method to solve the center-of-mass attribute of cultural relics ontology. First, the method combines the cultural relics image data to construct a deep feature fusion cultural relics ontology recognition model, which extracts and learns the cultural relics image features through multi-layer feature extraction, global information perception and ontology fusion recognition, so as to realize the efficient and accurate recognition of the cultural relic’s ontology. Then, the parameter synchronous migration learning method is designed to train and initialize the model, and the data migration strategy of semi-supervised learning is used to retrain the model using the public dataset and the cultural relic image data, to achieve the fine-tuning of the model parameters to improve the accuracy of the cultural relic ontology recognition. Finally, the center-of-mass positioning method is designed to integrate the attention mechanism with the quality of relics and other ontological attributes, and the segmentation of the relic’s ontology region is achieved by rectangular stereo fitting and the calculation of the center-of-mass points. At the same time, the fusion self-attention mechanism is used to adjust the regional center-of-mass weights to achieve weighted positioning of the center-of-mass position of the cultural relics. The experimental results show that the present method achieves the best Dice, Acc and MIoU metrics in comparison with various classical models, with improvements of 8.3%, 5.1% and 3.4% respectively. The overall center-of-mass offset of cultural relics is less than 2%, which can achieve accurate identification and center-of-mass positioning of the cultural relics body, fully improve the seismic impact dataset of cultural relics, and enhance the ability of preventive protection of cultural relics against earthquakes.

Abstract Background Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neurotoxicity (CIPN) is the most common adverse effect in patients undergoing chemotherapy, and no effective interventions are currently available for its prevention and treatment. Non-pharmacological therapies appear to be beneficial for the prevention and treatment of CIPN, but it remains unclear which therapy is most effective. The aim of this study was to identify the most effective non-pharmacological therapy for CIPN patients. Methods PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, and Cochrane Library were searched for randomized controlled trials on non-pharmacological therapies for CIPN. The primary outcomes included pain and peripheral neuropathological symptoms, and the secondary outcomes included quality of life, sensory and motor symptoms. The pairwise analysis and a network meta-analysis were performed using a random effects model. Results A total of 46 articles were included in this study, involving 2,878 participants. Our study showed that massage was more effective in pain-alleviating compared with acupuncture [SMD = 0.81, 95%CI (0.04, 1.57)], vitamin and gabapentin [SMD = 2.56, 95%CI (1.39, 3.74)], and usual care and placebo [SMD = 0.9, 95%CI (0.31, 1.49)]. As for attenuating peripheral neuropathological symptoms, massage was more effective than usual care and placebo [SMD = 0.75, 95%CI (0.33, 1.17)], sensorimotor training [SMD = 1.17, 95%CI (0.24, 2.10)], electrostimulation [SMD=-1.18, 95%CI (-2.14, -0.21)], multimodal exercise [SMD=-0.82, 95%CI (-1.57, -0.08)], and resistance training [SMD = 1.03, 95%CI (0.11, 1.95)]. Massage was also more effective than other non-pharmacological therapies in improving quality of life, sensory and motor symptoms. Conclusions According to our study, massage has advantages in alleviating pain, improving quality of life, and improving peripheral neuropathological symptoms and has better effect than other non-pharmacological interventions, representing certain clinical significance. However, the results of this study should be interpreted with caution due to the limitations of the included studies. In the future, more high-quality multi arm randomized controlled trials can be attempted to provide direct comparisons of the relative effects of non-pharmacological interventions.

BackgroundLow back pain is one of the most prevalent pain conditions worldwide. Virtual reality–based training has been used for low back pain as a new treatment strategy. Present evidence indicated that the effectiveness of virtual reality–based training for people with chronic low back pain is inconclusive. ObjectiveThis study conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the immediate- and short-term effects of virtual reality–based training on pain, pain-related fear, and disability in people with chronic low back pain. MethodsWe searched the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, PEDro, CENTRAL, and CINAHL databases from inception until January 2024. Only randomized controlled trials assessing the effects of virtual reality–based training on individuals with chronic low back pain were selected. The outcomes were focused on pain, pain-related fear measured by the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, and disability measured by the Oswestry Disability Index. The immediate term was defined as the immediate period after intervention, and the short term was defined as 3 to 6 months after intervention. The Cochrane Risk of Bias tool and the GRADE (Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation) approach were used to evaluate the quality of the methodology and evidence, respectively. ResultsIn total, 20 randomized controlled trials involving 1059 patients were eligible for analysis. Abstract Background Whether the monocyte to high-density lipoprotein ratio (MHR) is associated with the prognosis of coronary artery disease (CAD) is inconclusive. Methods Patients with CAD were enrolled and their data were collected. Blood was sampled within 24 h after admission. Multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to determine the relationship between the MHR and all-cause mortality as well as complications during hospitalization. Results We included 5371 patients in our cohort study. Among them, 114 (2.12%) patients died in hospital. MHR was independently associated with all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 1.81; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.35, 2.42), cardiovascular mortality (1.69; 1.17, 2.45) and non-cardiovascular mortality (2.04; 1.27, 3.28). This association was only observed in patients with hypertension (P for interaction = 0.003). Patients with higher MHR levels also have a higher risk of complications, including infection, pneumonia, electrolyte disturbance, gastrointestinal bleeding, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, and disturbance of consciousness. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the MHR had higher prognostic values than monocytes and high-density lipoprotein. Conclusion MHR was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality and in-hospital complications in patients with CAD, especially in patients with hypertension.

Abstract Background There is limited evidence to support the use of vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) on improving balance and gait in patients after stroke. This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of VRT in addition to usual rehabilitation compared with usual rehabilitation on improving balance and gait for patients after stroke. Methods This review followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analysis statement guidelines. Ten electronic databases were searched up to 1 June 2023 without restrictions in language and publication status. The PEDro scale and the Grading of Recommendations Assessment Development, and Evaluation were used to evaluate the risk of bias and the certainty of evidence. The meta-analysis was conducted with Review Manager 5.3. Results Fifteen randomised controlled trials with 769 participants were included. Mushroom cap is a key trait in the growth process and its phenotypic parameters are essential for automatic cultivation and smart breeding. However, the edible mushrooms are usually grown densely with mutual occlusion, which is difficult to obtain the phenotypic parameters non-destructively. Although deep learning methods achieve impressive performance with superior generalization capabilities, they require a large amount of ground truth label of the occluded target, which is a challenging task due to the substantial workload. To overcome this obstacle, a novel synthetic cap occlusion image method was proposed for rapidly generating edible mushroom occlusion datasets using raw images, in which the ground truth is obtained from the real world and the occlusion is randomly generated for simulating real scenes. Moreover, variants of amodal instance segmentation models with different backbone were trained and evaluated on our synthetic occlusion image datasets. Finally, an amodal mask-based size estimation method was presented to calculate the width and length of the cap. The experimental results showed that the amodal instance segmentation achieved an AP@[0.5:0.95] of 82%, 93% and 96% on Oudemansiella raphanipes, Agrocybe cylindraceas and Pholiota nameko synthetic cap datasets, respectively, with a size of 1024 × 1024 px, which indicates that our occlusion image synthesis method can effectively simulate the real cap occlusion situation. The size estimation method achieved an R2 of 0.95 and 0.98 between predictive amodal caps and manually labeled caps for the length and width of Agrocybe cylindraceas cap, respectively, which can be applied to obtain the phenotypic parameters of each cap effectively and accurately. These methods not only meet the demand for automatic monitoring of edible mushroom morphology in factories but also provide technical support for intelligent breeding.
