In view of the contemporary scenario and importance of alternative liquid dielectrics, IEEE DEIS Technical Committee on Liquid Dielectrics laid emphasis on pre-breakdown phenomena of ester dielectric fluids. The present article reports the background knowledge on the breakdown theories and behavior of streamers in insulating oils. The major influencing properties of the streamers aroused in liquid insulating systems are discussed keeping in view of the ester based dielectric fluids. A 240-MVA, 165-GRDY/20-kV generator step-up transformer was insulated with Envirotemp FR3 fluid. The transformer was energized during a cold temperature period in mid-December 2010. This is believed to be the largest generator step-up transformer filled with a natural ester fluid that was energized at low temperatures. The lack of cold start experience of natural ester-filled power transformers created questions and at least some uncertainty as to the outcome. This paper describes the instrumentation used and data collected during the cold startup procedure. In addition, a computational fluid dynamics analysis of this transformer design was performed that provided calculated temperatures and elapsed times until steady-state temperatures were achieved. Comparisons were made between the actual and calculated values. The results indicate that the cold startup procedures for a power transformer are the same whether filled with mineral oil or natural ester fluid of similar characteristics as used for this paper. A significant amount of lightning impulse breakdown and withstand testing has been accomplished in mineral oil to understand this important electrical characteristic for transformer insulation system design. To be considered as viable insulating fluids for high voltage equipment, alternative dielectric liquids should have similar lightning impulse characteristics as compared to mineral oil to provide the clearances necessary for common dielectric design. This paper reviews the testing for establishing the lightning impulse breakdown characteristics of natural ester fluids relative to mineral oil test results. The key variables of the testing included: various oil gap and solid insulation creep distances, electrode configurations, electrical stress characteristics, and solid insulation surfaces. The fluid gaps ranged from 3 mm to 55 mm. The electrode configurations included quasi-uniform in oil gaps, with some attached to pressboard, and nonhomogeneous contacts in oil gaps combined with a phenolic interface. The range in gap distance was selected to reflect the range commonly used in liquid insulated transformer core/coil designs. The electrical stresses used included 1.2 x 50 μs lightning impulses of both positive and negative polarity. The solid insulation materials consisted of high density pressboard, Kraft paper and a high density phenolic composite. it is concluded that the impulse breakdown voltage of the natural ester fluid is similar to mineral oil for the oil gaps and electrode configurations tested. Due to the low biodegradability of mineral oil, intense research is conducted to define alternative liquids with comparable dielectric properties. Natural ester liquids are an alternative in focus; they are used increasingly as insulating liquid in distribution and power transformers. The main advantages of natural ester liquids compared to mineral oil are their good biodegradability and mainly high flash and fire points providing better fire safety. The dielectric strength of natural ester liquids is comparable to conventional mineral oil for homogeneous field arrangements. However, many studies showed a reduced dielectric strength for highly inhomogeneous field arrangements. This study investigates at which degree of inhomogeneity differences in breakdown voltage between the two insulating liquids occur. Investigations use lightning impulses with different electrode arrangements representing different field inhomogeneity factors and different gap distances. To ensure comparisons with existing transformer geometries, investigations are application-oriented using a transformer conductor model, which is compared to other studies. Results show significant differences in breakdown voltage from an inhomogeneity factor of 0.1 (highly inhomogeneous field) depending on the gap distance.
