While it is an ethical imperative to provide multiculturally competent training, training programs vary widely in implementation. Further, the empirical evidence assessing the effectiveness of multiculturally competent training is limited. This study adds to the literature by describing a multicultural curriculum grounded in multicultural competence and providing empirical data assessing the curriculum. Our multicultural curriculum is implemented in a psychology-based counseling program and was assessed in 2010–2019, whereby 95 students completed self-report measures of awareness and knowledge as well as an evaluative assessment of multicultural competence. The measures were completed before engaging in the curriculum and repeated once they completed the curriculum. Findings indicate that the curriculum was associated with growth in self-reported awareness and knowledge but not growth in multicultural competence knowledge evaluated by a standardized test. Our clinical skills course with an accompanying self-awareness curriculum was associated with greater changes in self-reported awareness than any other element of our curriculum. Additional analyses suggest that baseline self-reported knowledge could be an impediment to gains in self-reported awareness. The results underscore the importance of combined awareness and skill development for continuous learning. An obstacle accounting educators face in facilitating learning effectiveness is the perennial student studying strategy—the dreaded "cramming cycle." We present a novel approach to help resolve this issue, based on W. Edwards Deming's Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle. This learning strategy is intended to reduce the need for cramming by providing a systematic approach to engage students in active learning, reflection, and continuous improvement processes. Following our implementation of this approach in undergraduate and graduate managerial accounting courses, our observations indicate the PDSA method increases student preparation for class, enhances participation during class, and boosts retention of material. We provide implementation guidelines that are easily adaptable to on-ground, online, and hybrid course delivery modes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The studies reported here examine how participants distribute resources to arbitrary stimuli in an equivalence class after one stimulus is given a social label. In Experiment 1, two 3-member equivalence classes were established with nonsense syllables (Class 1: Al (ZID), B1 (YIM), C1 (FAP) and Class 2: A2 (VEK), B2 (RIX), C2 (KUD)) using matching-to-sample training. A social function was then assigned to B1 only, using the simple verbal statement 'YIM is a Good person.' Next, participants were instructed to allocate tokens to stimuli in whatever way they consider appropriate. In general, the percentage distribution of tokens allocated to Class 1 was greater than those allocated to Class 2. Participants were then informed that a mistake had been made 'Sorry I have made a mistake. YIM was actually a bad person not a good person.' Participants were again asked to allocate tokens. In general, results showed a reduction in the distribution of tokens allocated to Class 1, with a relatively higher decrease for Bl, and an increase in the distribution allocated to Class 2. Experiment 2 replicated Experiment 1 with the addition of a baseline assessment of token distribution prior to examining the effects of adding a social function to B1. During this baseline, the distribution of tokens was relatively similar across both classes. When social functions were added, marked differences occurred in the distribution depending on whether YIM was described as a 'Good' or a 'Bad' person. Results are discussed regarding transfer of function and its relevance to experimental social psychology. Racism has been declared a public health threat. With increased direct and vicarious exposure to racism-based violence through social media, we explored the associations between racism-based events and traumatic stress symptomatology, as well as self- and collective care (inclusive of coping, activism, and ethnic and racial identity) through a mixed-methods approach. A total of 104 racism-based events were reported across 43 Black and/or Latine/x emerging adults in the sample, with a majority endorsing racism-based stress or traumatic stress (i.e., the symptomatology associated with a racism-based event). Individuals who reported higher racism-based traumatic stress symptoms immediately following a racism-based event also reported higher ethnic identity resolution scores. Further, 19%–42% of participants reported racism-based traumatic stress and racism-based stress more recently (respectively), showing that racism-based events may be traumatic stressors with long-term mental health consequences. Participants provided thick descriptions of how they defined and engaged in self- and collective care as wellness and activism and reported engaging in cultural, ancestral, spiritual, and religious practices in an attempt to heal. The findings of this study underscore the importance of radical hope and radical healing for Black and Latine/x communities. Public Policy Relevance Statement: Exposure to racism, whether directly or vicariously, has negative implications for mental health; while this has been well-documented, traumatic stress has not been included in mental health diagnostic codes. This study suggests that mental health policies at the institutional and structural level should address direct and vicarious exposure to racism as well as acknowledge these experiences as bona fide traumatic stressors necessitating their own diagnostic category or code. Policies must also be created to address the harm done to communities of color and improve clinician training to affirm and support racially and ethnically minoritized individuals in their self-healing and collective healing journey and pursuit for racial justice. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relation between household food insecurity (HFI) and fear of hypoglycemia among young adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes and adolescents with type 1 diabetes and their parents. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: We analyzed cross-sectional data of 1,676 young adults with youth-onset diabetes (84% type 1, 16% type 2) and 568 adolescents (<18 years old; mean age 15.1 years) with type 1 diabetes from the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth study. Adult participants and parents of adolescent participants completed the U.S. Household Food Security Survey Module. Adults, adolescents, and parents of adolescents completed the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey, where answers range from 1 to 4. The outcomes were mean score for fear of hypoglycemia and the behavior and worry subscale scores. Linear regression models identified associations between HFI and fear of hypoglycemia scores. RESULTS: Adults with type 1 diabetes experiencing HFI had higher fear of hypoglycemia scores (0.22 units higher for behavior, 0.55 units for worry, 0.40 units for total; all P < 0.0001) than those without HFI. No differences by HFI status were found for adolescents with type 1 diabetes. Parents of adolescents reporting HFI had a 0.18 unit higher worry score than those not reporting HFI (P < 0.05). Adults with type 2 diabetes experiencing HFI had higher fear of hypoglycemia scores (0.19 units higher for behavior, 0.35 units for worry, 0.28 units for total; all P < 0.05) than those in food secure households. CONCLUSIONS: Screening for HFI and fear of hypoglycemia among people with diabetes can help providers tailor diabetes education for those who have HFI and therefore fear hypoglycemia. Objective: To examine the association between household food insecurity (HFI), glycemic control, severe hypoglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) among youth and young adults (YYA) with youth‐onset type 2 diabetes. Research design and methods: This cross‐sectional study included 395 YYA with type 2 diabetes from the SEARCH for Diabetes in Youth Study (2015–2019). HFI was reported by young adult participants or parents of minor participants via the US Household Food Security Survey Module. Glycemic control was assessed by HbA1c and analyzed as a continuous and categorical variable (optimal: <7.0%, suboptimal: ≥7.0%–9.0%, poor: >9.0%). Acute complications included self‐reported severe hypoglycemia or DKA in the last 12 months. Adjusted logistic and linear regression were used for binary and continuous outcomes, respectively. Results: Approximately 31% reported HFI in the past 12 months. Mean HbA1c among those with HFI was 9.2% compared to 9.5% without HFI. Of those with HFI, 56% had an HbA1c >9.0% compared to 55% without HFI. Adjusted models showed no associations between HFI and glycemic control. Of those with HFI, 14.4% reported experiencing DKA and 4.7% reported severe hypoglycemia. YYA with HFI had 3.08 times (95% CI: 1.18–8.06) the odds of experiencing DKA as those without HFI. There was no association between HFI and severe hypoglycemia. Conclusions: HFI was associated with markedly increased odds of DKA but not with glycemic control or severe hypoglycemia. Future research among YYA with type 2 diabetes should evaluate longitudinally whether alleviating HFI reduces DKA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Gender differences in physical activity (PA) trajectories during adolescence are well documented, yet little research has examined whether the determinants of these trajectories vary by child's gender. This study is one of few prospective examinations of gender differences in the influences of psychosocial and socioenvironmental factors on changes in objectively measured PA. Methods: Students and parents from elementary and middle schools located in 2 school districts in South Carolina were enrolled in a prospective cohort study of changes in children's PA from elementary to middle school. Measures included children's and/or parents' ratings of various psychosocial and socioenvironmental factors as well as objectively measured PA, children's anthropometric characteristics, and neighborhood factors at fifth and sixth grades. Results: Parents' reports of children's sport and class participation, parent-reported support for PA, and neighborhood resources for PA were protective against declines in PA for both boys and girls. The effects of 2 factors--children's self-efficacy and parents' leisure-time PA--on changes in PA over time were moderated by the child's gender. The purpose of this qualitative study is to elucidate how food insecurity affects diabetes self-management among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Eleven persons with T2DM who screened as food insecure were recruited from a patient pool of a healthcare system in South Carolina. Interview recordings were transcribed, blinded, and imported into NVivo. Participant ages ranged from 36 to 66 years, and included nine women, and seven African American participants. Three major themes emerged: (1) coping with food insecurity; (2) strategies used to manage T2DM within the context of food insecurity; and (3) receiving unrealistic advice from providers.
