Midlife individuals assigned female at birth are at risk for problematic eating behavior, associated with negative health outcomes. Little is known about how menopausal symptoms may increase risk in this population. The current study aimed to understand how a comprehensive range of menopause symptoms were globally associated with problematic eating behaviors. A total of 281 cisgender women (176 post-menopause, 105 peri-menopause) from the United States aged 40 to 64 were recruited utilizing Prolific, an online survey platform. Participants answered questionnaires about menopause symptoms and problematic eating. Participants were selected using demographic and health information provided in a screener survey. Participants also completed the Eating Disorder Questionnaire (EDE-Q), Women's Health Questionnaire (WHQ), Patient Health Questionnaire-8 (PHQ-8), Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Using Structural Equation Modeling, menopause symptoms explained 16.7 percent of the variance in problematic eating. Higher frequency and severity of anxiety, depression, sleep concerns, cognitive complaints, pain, and vasomotor symptoms was associated with greater frequency and severity of problematic eating behaviors, β =.40, p <.001. Invariance testing showed no significant differences between peri- and postmenopausal women. Background Post-traumatic growth (PTG) has been extensively explored within general oncology, yet little is known about the experience of PTG in neuro-oncology. This study aimed to determine the representation of patients with primary brain tumors (PBT) in the PTG literature. Methods PsycINFO, PubMed, and CINAHL were systematically searched from inception to December 2022. Search terms were related to personal growth and positive reactions to cancer. Articles were first screened by titles and abstracts, then full texts were reviewed using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses method. Results A total of 382 articles met the inclusion criteria. Of those, 13 included patients with PBT. Over 100 000 cancer patients were represented, with 0.79% having a PBT. Most research focused on low-grade gliomas. PTG negatively correlated with post-traumatic stress symptoms and avoidant coping. In the sole longitudinal study, patients with PBT demonstrated improved PTG after 1 year. Three quasi-experimental studies investigated the effect of mindfulness-based interventions with mixed-cancer samples and demonstrated improvement in PTG. Conclusions The inclusion rate of patients with PBT in the PTG literature was significantly lower than the population prevalence rate (1.3% of cancer diagnoses). Relatively few studies focused exclusively on how patients with PBT experience PTG (k = 5), and those that did only included low-grade glioma. The experience of PTG in those with high-grade glioma remains unknown. Patients with PBT are scarcely included in research on PTG interventions. Few studies examined the relationship between PTG and medical, cognitive, or psychological characteristics. Our understanding of the PTG experience in neuro-oncology remains extremely limited. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic caused an unprecedented mid-semester transition to virtual learning. Instructors and students had to adapt to new ways of delivering and receiving course material. Objective: The present investigation examined whether course format and sense of belongingness were associated with learning satisfaction during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as racial/ethnic or gender identity differences in academic experiences during this time. The current study also explored student perceptions of instructor support, changes in workload, and changes in learning. Method: Undergraduate students (N = 157) responded to quantitative and qualitative items regarding their academic experiences during the first semester of the pandemic in an online survey. Results: Blended courses were associated with poorer outcomes than solely synchronous and asynchronous courses. There were no racial differences in academic experiences; however, women had more positive academic experiences than men. Greater academic and campus belongingness predicted better academic experiences. Students perceived clear, frequent instructor communication as vital to their success. Conclusion: Students' experiences with virtual learning varied depending on instructor and student factors. Teaching Implications: Instructors can improve their students' experiences with virtual learning by providing frequent, clear communication, resources on effective study and time management skills, and a sense of community. Objective: To examine sleep health within a self-determination framework across a diverse college sample. Participants: A nonclinical sample of undergraduate students (n = 399) from a large, urban, public university in the Mid-Atlantic United States in Spring 2020. Methods: Participants were recruited via an online research participation portal and received extra credit for participation. All measures were administered via an online survey. Results: Basic psychological need satisfaction was associated with sleep health. This association was partially mediated by sleep hygiene but not by regulatory style. There were no racial/ethnic differences in sleep health, sleep hygiene, basic need satisfaction, or regulatory style. Men reported more maladaptive motivational styles for sleep health, and non-binary/transgender students reported worse sleep hygiene. Conclusion: Basic psychological need satisfaction and sleep hygiene are critical targets for intervention across diverse college student populations. The formation of new blood (angiogenesis) and lymphatic (lymphangiogenesis) vessels are major events associated with most epithelial malignancies, including breast cancer. Angiogenesis is essential for cancer cell survival. Lymphangiogenesis is critical in maintaining tumoral interstitial fluid balance and importing tumor-facilitatory immune cells. Both vascular routes also serve as conduits for cancer metastasis. Intratumoral hypoxia promotes both events by stimulating multiple angiogenic/lymphangiogenic growth factors. Studies on tumor-associated lymphangiogenesis and its exploitation for therapy have received less attention from the research community than those on angiogenesis. Inflammation is a key mediator of both processes, hijacked by many cancers by the aberrant expression of the inflammation-associated enzyme cyclo-oxygenase (COX)-2. In this review, we focus on breast cancer and showed that COX-2 is a major promoter of both events, primarily resulting from the activation of prostaglandin (PG) E receptor EP4 on tumor cells, tumor-infiltrating immune cells, and endothelial cells; and the induction of oncogenic microRNAs. The COX-2/EP4 pathway also promotes additional events in breast cancer progression, such as cancer cell migration, invasion, and the stimulation of stem-like cells. Based on a combination of studies using multiple breast cancer models, we show that EP4 antagonists hold a major promise in breast cancer therapy in combination with other modalities including immune check-point inhibitors.

Objective: Caregivers of patients with primary brain tumor (PBT) describe feeling preoccupied with the inevitability of their loved one's death. However, there are currently no validated instruments to assess death anxiety in caregivers. This study sought to examine (1) the psychometric properties of the Death and Dying Distress Scale (DADDS), adapted for caregivers (DADDS-CG), and (2) the prevalence and correlates of death anxiety in caregivers of patients with PBT. Methods: Caregivers (N = 67) of patients with PBT completed the DADDS-CG, Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7), Fear of Cancer Recurrence (FCR-7), and God Locus of Health Control (GLHC). Caregivers' sociodemographic information and patients' medical characteristics were also collected. Preliminary examination of the psychometric properties of the DADDS-CG was conducted using exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha, and correlations. The prevalence and risk factors of death anxiety were assessed using frequencies, pair-wise comparisons, and correlations. Results: Factor analysis of the DADDS-CG revealed a two-factor structure consistent with the original DADDS. The DADDS-CG demonstrated excellent internal consistency, convergent validity with the PHQ-9, GAD-7, and FCR-7, and discriminant validity with the GLHC. Over two-thirds of caregivers reported moderate-to-severe symptoms of death anxiety. Death anxiety was highest in women and caregivers of patients with high-grade PBT. Significance of results: The DADDS-CG demonstrates sound psychometric properties in caregivers of patients with PBT, who report high levels of death anxiety. Further research is needed to support the measure's value in clinical care and research — both in this population and other caregivers — in order to address this unmet, psychosocial need. A mixed-mode university course, combining online learning and face-to-face meetings, can encourage students to formulate and express their own ideas more than would be the case in traditional classrooms. This article describes an experimental project at the University of British Columbia and explores connections between online learning and aspects of liberal humanism.

Background To achieve patient-centric quality care in neuro-oncology, all aspects of the disease and its impact on quality survival need to be considered. This includes the psychological consequences of a brain tumor diagnosis and subsequent life-altering experiences. Far too often the voice of our patients is unheard. Empowering patients to advocate for their own psychological needs is essential. Methods Data were derived from four focus groups with adult patients with brain tumors (N = 15; M age = 46 years, 53% female). A trained moderator led each 90-min group and posed semi-structured questions regarding patients' care needs throughout their neuro-oncological disease trajectory. Emphasis was placed on the quality of life and distress reduction. Common themes were identified via thematic content analysis using NVivo software. A high inter-rater reliability (M kappa = 0.92, range = 0.85–0.93) was achieved. Two themes are presented here: Emotional Response to Stressors and Existential Considerations. Results Of the two themes presented, 14 codes emerged. Codes were classified into three broad categories: Fear, Despair, and Resilience. The frequency of each category ranged from 31.4% to 34.7%. Example quotes and a discussion of each category follows. Conclusions It is imperative that we include the patient perspective in the development of neuro-oncology programs, thereby considering the quality of survival in addition to quantity. Neuro-oncology quality care must be driven by our patients' experiences and should integrate support for emotional distress while promoting resilience throughout this life-threatening illness. The article presents the discussion on applying intersectionality as interconnections of identities as opposed to multiple categories of identities. Topics include gender role development, violence against women, women's health inequities, portrayals of women in the media, and intersectionality; and photovoice being a community-based participatory action research method.

Background Fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is a psychological consequence of cancer diagnosis that impacts quality of life in neuro-oncology. However, the instruments used to assess FCR have not been tested for validity in patients with brain tumors. The present study explored the psychometric properties of a brief FCR scale in patients with primary brain tumor (PBT) and their caregivers. Methods Adult patients with PBT (n = 165) and their caregivers (n = 117) completed the FCR–7-item scale (FCR7) and measures of psychological functioning. Exploratory factor analyses (EFA) were conducted for both patient and caregiver FCR7. Convergent validity, prevalence, the difference between FCR in patients and caregivers, and relationships with relevant medical and demographic variables were explored. Results EFAs revealed a single factor with one item demonstrating poor loading for both patients and caregivers. Removal of the item measuring hypervigilance symptoms (checking for physical signs of tumor) greatly improved the single factor metrics. The amended scale (FCR6-Brain) demonstrated good convergent validity. Caregiver FCR was significantly higher than patient. Clinical guidance to identify clinically significant FCR was introduced. Age, gender, and time since diagnosis were related to FCR, with higher FCR in younger women more recently diagnosed. Conclusions The FCR6-Brain is the first validated instrument to assess FCR in this population and should be used to identify individuals at risk for FCR and guide development of future psychotherapeutic interventions. Objective: Patients with primary brain tumors (PwPBT) experience negative cognitive sequalae (cancer-related cognitive impairment; CRCI) as a result of tumor burden, surgical intervention, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Research investigating CRCI treatments for PwPBT remains nascent. Most of the previous investigations have applied interventions developed for and tested in other medical populations to PwPBT, leaving gaps in our understanding of what might best serve the specific needs of PwPBT. Thus, the present study examined sources of cancer-related distress and preferences for interventions to address CRCI in PwPBT. Methods: As part of institutional quality improvement, PwPBT rated specific symptoms of cancer-related distress (from "not at all" to "very much" bothered) as well as preferences for specific interventions to address or cope with CRCI (from "not at all" to "very" interested). Patients also self-reported demographics and medical characteristics. Descriptive statistics characterized sources of distress and treatment preferences. Results: PwPBT (N = 41, age 45.1 + 13.2, 52.5% male, 87.5% White) completed the questionnaire. Fatigue (54%) and cognitive changes (53%) were rated as the most distressing symptoms following brain tumor diagnosis. Cognitive rehabilitation (42%) and mindful movement (42%) were the most preferred interventions for management of CRCI; followed by psychotherapy (37%), mindfulness meditation (30%), and medication (20%). Discussion: As expected, cognitive changes were a highly-rated source of distress for PwPBT, second only to fatigue. Both formal cognitive rehabilitation and mindful movement, or gentle exercise like yoga, were the most preferred interventions for management of CRCI. Importantly, these interventions may dually address fatigue symptoms for PwPBT. These data can inform future intervention development within neuro-oncology. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
