Purpose: The aim of this study was to demonstrate the publication trends in the area of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) in the last ten years. Materials and Methods: All of the PPV related research articles, case reports, letters, reviews and meeting abstracts published between January 2009 and December 2018 indexed on the Web of Science Core Collection were evaluated. A bibliometric filter was used to capture publications about PPV by using the key words 'pars plana vitrectomy', 'retina surgery' and 'vitreous surgery' in the 'topic' selection mode. Publication years, topics, document types, authors, languages, country origins, institutions, citations and journals of the published documents were evaluated. Results: A total of 4877 publications was evaluated in this bibliometric study. The total publication counts about PPV had been increased from the year 2009 (368 documents) to 2018 (607 documents). The mostly encountered topics were PPV combined with an anterior segment procedure (670 documents, 13.7%), rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (393 documents, 8.1%), and macular hole (388 documents, 8.0%). The most published document type were research articles and case reports (4029 documents, 82.6%). University of London was the most productive institution (131 documents, 2.7%). The journal that published the most about PPV was 'Retina' (615 documents, 12.6%). The average citation count per PPV document was 7.9. Conclusions: In the area of PPV related publications, the most encountered topics were PPV combined with an anterior segment procedure and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment surgery in the last decade. © 2020 Gazi Eye Foundation. Purpose: To describe the natural history of eyes with symptomatic idiopathic vitreomacular traction (VMT). Methods: Retrospective multicenter study of 168 eyes with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT) findings consistent with idiopathic VMT. All eyes were graded according to SD-OCT findings. Grade 1 was defined as incomplete cortical vitreous separation with foveal attachment. Grade 2 was defined as Grade 1 plus intraretinal cysts or clefts. Grade 3 was defined as Grade 2 plus a foveal detachment. All patients were followed for at least 6 months. Results: There were 168 patients (51 men) with a mean age of 68.8 ± 10.7 years. Patients were followed for a mean of 22.7 ± 20.1 months. The mean duration of symptoms before the initial presentation was 3.65 ± 5.42 months. At baseline, 72 eyes had Grade 1, 74 eyes had Grade 2, and 22 eyes had Grade 3 SD-OCT findings. Over the follow-up period, 36 eyes (21.4%) had spontaneous resolution of the VMT with normalization of the foveal anatomy. The mean time to resolution was 12.3 ± 12.6 months. An unfavorable anatomical outcome occurred in 7.7% (13 of 168) of the eyes, with 6 eyes developing a lamellar macular hole and 7 eyes developing a full-thickness macular hole. This occurred at a mean of 10.3 ± 10.7 months after the presentation. Subgroup analysis based on baseline SD-OCT grade showed that 4.1% (3 of 73) of Grade 1 eyes compared with 6.8% (5 of 74) of Grade 2 eyes, and 23.8% (5 of 21) of Grade 3 eyes developed a full-thickness macular hole or lamellar macular hole (P 0.0109, chi-square test). In the remaining 119 eyes, at the last follow-up, 65 eyes had Grade 1, 42 eyes had Grade 2, and 12 eyes had Grade 3 VMT. On average, the best-corrected visual acuity improved from 0.40 ± 0.35 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (Snellen, 20/50) at baseline to 0.35 ± 0.36 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (Snellen, 20/45; P 0.0372), and the mean central macular thickness improved from 350 ± 132 m to 323 ± 121 m. Conclusion: Spontaneous resolution of VMT occurred in 21.4% (36 of 168) of eyes after a mean follow-up of 11.4 ± 12.6 months. An unfavorable anatomical outcome occurred in 7.7% (13 of 168) of eyes. The baseline SD-OCT grade may predict the progression to full-thickness macular hole.

Purpose To report a case of epiretinal macular membrane and a lamellar macular hole developing after the spontaneous separation of an idiopathic vitreoretinal traction. Methods Retrospective, observational, long follow-up of a case evaluated and documented with optical coherence tomography and managed with current therapies including pars plana vitrectomy. Results Good anatomic and functional results with stable 20/30 best-corrected visual acuity. Conclusions The natural course of idiopathic vitreomacular traction has been documented during prolonged observation after its spontaneous separation from the fovea leading to the development of an epiretinal membrane and a lamellar macular hole.

Purpose: To investigate the relevance of the concentration of S100B in subretinal fluid (SRF) with the postoperative anatomical and functional success and proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) formation parameters in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD). Methods: Fifty-three patients (34 male, 19 female) were included in this prospective study. Study group consisted of 46 patients who had scleral buckling (SB) surgery with the diagnosis of RRD. Control group consisted of six patients who had pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for either full-thickness macular hole or subluxated intraocular lens. SRFs were obtained during SB surgery. Study cases were divided into three groups, corresponding to the duration of retinal detachment (DRD). Clinical characteristics including best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), anatomical status at 6 months, the presence of postoperative PVR that resulted in recurrent detachment and any possible re-operations were recorded. The concentration of S100B was quantified by using an enzyme immunoassay test kit. Results: The concentration of S100B in SRF increased significantly after RRD. And, S100B levels were evidently elevated in concordance with DRD. There was no correlation between the concentration of SRF - S100B with preoperative or postoperative BCVA. Again, S100B levels were not related to the extent of RRD or postoperative PVR formation. Conclusion: Concentration of S100B in SRF is good marker of retinal stress and increases in concordance with DRD. However it would not help to predict the possible anatomical and functional success or postoperative PVR formation.

Purpose: To describe 19 patients (20 eyes) who developed a macular hole (MH) after undergoing bilateral LASIK for the correction of myopia. Design: Noncomparative, interventional, retrospective, multicenter case series. Participants: Nineteen patients (20 eyes) who developed an MH after bilateral LASIK for the correction of myopia at 10 institutions in Venezuela, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Spain, and the United States. Methods: Chart review. Main Outcome Measure: Macular hole development. Results: The MH formed between 1 to 83 months after LASIK (mean, 12.1). In 60% of cases, the MH developed ?6 months after LASIK, and in 30% of cases it developed less than 1 year after LASIK. Eighteen of 19 (94.7%) patients were female. Mean age was 46 years (range, 25-65). All eyes were myopic (range, -0.50 to -19.75 diopters [mean, -8.9]). Posterior vitreous detachment was not present before and was documented after LASIK in 55% of eyes. A vitrectomy closed the MH on the 14 eyes that underwent surgical management, with an improvement of final best-corrected visual acuity in 13 of 14 (92.8%) patients. Our 20 eyes with a full-thickness MH after LASIK reflect an incidence of approximately 0.02% (20/83938). Conclusion: An MH may infrequently develop after LASIK for the correction of myopia. Our study shows that vitreoretinal surgery can be successful in restoring vision for most myopic eyes with an MH after LASIK. Vitreoretinal interface changes may play a role in MH formation after LASIK for the correction of myopia. © 2005 by the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
