Abstract

The present study investigates the modal stability of the steady incompressible flow inside a toroidal pipe for values of the curvature δ (ratio between pipe and torus radii) approaching zero, i.e. the limit of a straight pipe. The global neutral stability curve for 10-7 ≤ δ ≤ 10-2 is traced using a continuation algorithm. Two different families of unstable eigenmodes are identified. For curvatures below 1.5 × 10-6, the critical Reynolds number Recr is proportional to δ -1/2. Hence, the critical Dean number is constant, Decr = 2 Recr √ δ ≈ 113. This behaviour confirms that the Hagen-Poiseuille flow is stable to infinitesimal perturbations for any Reynolds number and suggests that a continuous transition from the curved to the straight pipe takes place as far as it regards the stability properties. For low values of the curvature, an approximate self-similar solution for the steady base flow can be obtained at a fixed Dean number. Abstract

The axial coupling of the nucleon, g.sub.A, is the strength of its coupling to the weak axial current of the standard model of particle physics, in much the same way as the electric charge is the strength of the coupling to the electromagnetic current. This axial coupling dictates the rate at which neutrons decay to protons, the strength of the attractive long-range force between nucleons and other features of nuclear physics. Precision tests of the standard model in nuclear environments require a quantitative understanding of nuclear physics that is rooted in quantum chromodynamics, a pillar of the standard model. The importance of g.sub.A makes it a benchmark quantity to determine theoretically--a difficult task because quantum chromodynamics is non-perturbative, precluding known analytical methods. Lattice quantum chromodynamics provides a rigorous, non-perturbative definition of quantum chromodynamics that can be implemented numerically. It has been estimated that a precision of two per cent would be possible by 2020 if two challenges are overcome.sup.1,2: contamination of g.sub.A from excited states must be controlled in the calculations and statistical precision must be improved markedly.sup.2-10. Here we use an unconventional method.sup.11 inspired by the Feynman-Hellmann theorem that overcomes these challenges. Abstract

The appearance of a light composite $0^+$ scalar resonance in nearly conformal gauge-fermion theories motivates further study of the low energy structure of these theories. To this end, we present a nonperturbative lattice calculation of s-wave scattering of Goldstone bosons in the maximal-isospin channel in SU(3) gauge theory with $N_f=8$ light, degenerate flavors. The scattering phase shift is measured both for different values of the underlying fermion mass and for different values of the scattering momentum. We examine the effect of a light flavor-singlet scalar (reported in earlier studies) on Goldstone boson scattering, employing a dilaton effective field theory (EFT) at the tree level. The EFT gives a good description of the scattering data, insofar as the magnitude of deviations between EFT and lattice data are no larger than the expected size of next-to-leading order corrections in the EFT., 13 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables. Abstract

Healthcare delivery and health outcomes of patients could significantly improve if the different electronic health systems of medical institutions were interoperable, that is if they could exchange and combine their data in a meaningful way. In addition, patients are increasingly becoming active sources of data with the growing use of health apps. This valuable information should not be lost, but rather be integrated with the patients’ data in an open platform approach where the distance between caregiver and patient is reduced. Charité Universitätsmedizin Berlin and Berlin Institute of Health (BIH) are members of HiGHmed, a German consortium where eight university hospitals have agreed to the cross-institutional data exchange through novel medical informatics solutions. In this paper, we describe our approach to improve interoperability for the use case Infection Control of the HiGHmed project. Starting from the openEHR standard, we performed a syntactic mapping to the recommended standard Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (FHIR) and to the Observational Medical Outcomes Partnership Common Data Model (OMOP CDM). FHIR enables fast exchange of data thanks to the discrete data elements into which information is organized, and OMOP CDM offers a data model specific for population-level analyses. Mapping is essential to identify which data have their correspondent elements in a different data model and can thus be converted into another standard without loss of information. As expected, not all openEHR and FHIR information could be mapped to OMOP CDM as many patient-level data are not important for population-level analysis. However, overall, mapping for the analyzed dataset was performed without major issues and we believe the use case will be able to exploit the advantages of the selected standards., Die Gesundheitsversorgung und die gesundheitlichen Ergebnisse für Patienten könnten erheblich verbessert werden, wenn die verschiedenen elektronischen Gesundheitssysteme medizinischer Einrichtungen interoperabel wären, das heißt, wenn sie ihre Daten sinnvoll austauschen und kombinieren könnten. Darüber hinaus werden Patienten mit der steigenden Verbreitung von Gesundheits-Apps zunehmend selbst zu aktiven Datenquellen. 18. Optical and X-ray GRB Fundamental Planes as cosmological distance indicators.

Abstract

Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), can be employed as standardized candles, extending the distance ladder beyond Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia, z  = 2.26). We standardize GRBs using the three-dimensional (3D) Fundamental Plane relation (the Dainotti relation) among the rest-frame end time of the X-ray plateau emission, its corresponding luminosity, and the peak prompt luminosity. Combining SNe Ia and GRBs, we constrain ΩM = 0.299 ± 0.009 assuming a flat Λ cold dark matter (ΛCDM) cosmology with and without correcting GRBs for selection biases and redshift evolution. Using a 3D optical Dainotti correlation, we find this sample is as efficacious in the determination of ΩM as the X-ray sample. We trimmed our GRB samples to achieve tighter planes to simulate additional GRBs. We determined how many GRBs are needed as stand-alone probes to achieve a comparable precision on ΩM to the one obtained by SNe Ia only. We reach the same error measurements derived using SNe Ia in 2011 and 2014 with 142 and 284 simulated optical GRBs, respectively, considering the error bars on the variables halved. These error limits will be reached in 2038 and in 2047, respectively. Using a doubled sample (obtained by future machine learning approaches allowing a light-curve reconstruction and the estimates of GRB redshifts when z is unknown) compared to the current sample, with error bars halved we will reach the same precision as SNe Ia in 2011 and 2014, now and in 2026, respectively. Abstract

OBJECTIVE\ud \ud To assess whether genetic subgroups in recent amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) trials responded to treatment with lithium carbonate, but that the treatment effect was lost in a large cohort of nonresponders.\ud \ud METHODS\ud \ud Individual participant data were obtained from 3 randomized trials investigating the efficacy of lithium carbonate. We matched clinical data with data regarding the UNC13A and C9orf72 genotype. Our primary outcome was survival at 12 months. On an exploratory basis, we assessed whether the effect of lithium depended on the genotype.\ud \ud RESULTS\ud \ud Clinical data were available for 518 of the 606 participants. Overall, treatment with lithium carbonate did not improve 12-month survival (hazard ratio [HR] 1.0, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.7-1.4; p = 0.96). Both the UNC13A and C9orf72 genotype were independent predictors of survival (HR 2.4, 95% CI 1.3-4.3; p = 0.006 and HR 2.5, 95% CI 1.1-5.2; p = 0.032, respectively). The effect of lithium was different for UNC13A carriers (p = 0.027), but not for C9orf72 carriers (p = 0.22). The 12-month survival probability for UNC13A carriers treated with lithium carbonate improved from 40.1% (95% CI 23.2-69.1) to 69.7% (95% CI 50.4-96.3).\ud \ud CONCLUSIONS\ud \ud This study incorporated genetic data into past ALS trials to determine treatment effects in a genetic post hoc analysis. Our results suggest that we should reorient our strategies toward finding treatments for ALS, start focusing on genotype-targeted treatments, and standardize genotyping in order to optimize randomization and analysis for future clinical trials.

Abstract

The violation of Baryon Number, $\mathcal{B}$, is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR %experiment program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source (ESS) to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\rightarrow \bar{n}$) via mixing, neutron-antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow \bar{n}$), and neutron disappearance ($n\rightarrow n'$); the effective $\Delta \mathcal{B}=0$ process of neutron regeneration ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow n$) is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterise mixing in the neutron, antineutron, and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis, the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

Abstract

Introduction: Acquired thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (aTTP) is a rare life-threatening thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA) affecting more frequently women of 30–50 years of age. There is scarce information on the clinical features of aTTP occurring in the elderly. Our goal was to evaluate the impact of an elderly-onset disease on the expression, severity and management of aTTP. Materials and methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of patients enrolled in the Milan TTP Registry (www.ttpdatabase.org) after a first acute episode of aTTP from January 2002 to March 2018. Abstract

The Hubble constant (H0) tension between Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and Planck measurements ranges from 4 to 6σ. To investigate this tension, we estimate H0 in the ΛCDM and CDM (cold dark matter) models by dividing the Pantheon sample, the largest compilation of SNe Ia, into 3, 4, 20, and 40 bins. We fit the extracted H0 values with a function mimicking the redshift evolution: , where α indicates an evolutionary parameter and at z = 0. We set the absolute magnitude of SNe Ia so that , and we fix fiducial values for and. We find that H0 evolves with redshift, showing a slowly decreasing trend, with α coefficients consistent with zero only from 1.2 to 2.0σ. Although the α coefficients are compatible with zero in 3σ, this however may affect cosmological results. We measure locally a variation of in three and four bins. Extrapolating to z = 1100, the redshift of the last scattering surface, we obtain values of H0 compatible in 1σ with Planck measurements independent of the cosmological models and number of bins we investigated. Thus, we have reduced the H0 tension in the range from 54% to 72% for both cosmological models.
