Abstract

BackgroundThe Onduo virtual diabetes clinic (VDC) for people with type 2 diabetes (T2D) combines a mobile app, remote personalized lifestyle coaching, connected devices, and live video consultations with board-certified endocrinologists for medication management and prescription of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) devices for intermittent use. ObjectiveThis prospective single-arm study evaluated glycemic outcomes associated with participation in the Onduo VDC for 4 months. MethodsAdults aged ≥18 years with T2D and a baseline glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) of ≥8% to ≤12% were enrolled from 2 primary care centers from February 2019 to October 2019. Participants were asked to engage at ≥1 time per week with their care team and to participate in a telemedicine consultation with a clinic endocrinologist for diabetes medication review. Participants were asked to use a RT-CGM device and wear six 10-day sensors (total 60 days of sensor wear) intermittently over the course of 4 months. The primary outcome was change in HbA1c at 4 months from baseline. Other endpoints included change in weight and in RT-CGM glycemic metrics, including percent time 250 mg/dL. Changes in blood pressure and serum lipids at 4 months were also evaluated. ResultsParticipants (n=55) were 57.3 (SD 11.6) years of age, body mass index 33.7 (SD 7.2), and 40% (22/55) female. HbA1c decreased significantly by 1.6% (SD 1%; P9.0% (n=19), HbA1c decreased by 1.2% (SD 0.6%; P250 mg/dL decreased by 7.2% (SD 15.4; P=.005) and 3.0% (SD 9.4; P=.01), respectively. 2. Prospective Physical Educators' Preferences for Using Sport Education, Teaching Games for Understanding, and Direct Teaching When Instructing Games

Abstract

Research has noted the constraints to applying constructivist pedagogical models such as Sport Education and Teaching Games for Understanding in practicing and prospective physical education teachers. This study was an investigation of prospective physical educators' preferences for Direct Teaching, Sport Education, and Teaching Games for Understanding in physical education and what they liked and disliked about each model. The sample consisted of 309 undergraduate physical education students who received preliminary training and experience with each instructional approach in an upper-level undergraduate university games course. There was substantial support for each of the three instructional models although students preferred Sport Education and Teaching Games for Understanding over Direct Teaching. These findings provide valuable insight into the relative strength and specificity of prospective physical educators' views about these models and evidence that, in settings where these models are explicitly taught and practiced, prospective physical educators can have progressive knowledge and beliefs about them.

7. Hidden Curriculum: The Radical Youth Punk Pedagogy of Propagandhi, a Case Study 1992-2017

Abstract

The scholarly study of punk is a growing interdisciplinary field. Within that already specialized group, research into punk pedagogy is emerging as a vital component of punk scholarship. However, no study in punk pedagogy has narrowed its scope to any one influential punk band to determine what constitutes its punk pedagogy. This dissertation weaves diverse disciplines together to elucidate the hidden curriculum of the progressive Canadian punk band, Propagandhi. An understanding of Propagandhi's punk pedagogy is formulated through textual analysis of the band's lyrics, a sonic investigation of their music, interviews with the band, and surveys of Propagandhi fans, all informed and supported by an auto-ethnographic fan and learner experience of the researcher. As self-proclaimed "failures in school," it is incredible that Propagandhi succeed in doing what so many schools wish to do: create critically engaged students embarking on a journey of becoming global citizens. Resolving how this could be the case brings many fields of study to task. What is the hidden curriculum woven into Propagandhi's body of work that has effectively changed so many lives across the globe? Are they simply embodying a critical pedagogy, or have they crafted an approach unique to their brand of punk rock? Furthermore, this dissertation legitimizes the hidden curriculum found within informal educational settings. Propagandhi, ultimately, are able to strike a balance between reasonable critical thought and inquiry as outlined by Neil Postman's theories on education, while Propagandhi also focus on changing social issues that are relevant and crucial to a free society. 15. Differences in Enjoyment and Need for Cognition Relative to Teaching Games for Understanding, Physical Education, and Intentions to Enroll

Abstract

The primary aim of this quasi-experimental study was to investigate differences in enjoyment and need for cognition between regular physical education and a Teaching Games for Understanding (TGfU) unit by level (higher or lower) of intention to enroll in physical education. A sample of 71 ninth-grade physical education students completed a survey assessing enjoyment and need for cognition before and after participating in a 2-week TGfU territorial games unit. Results included significantly lower enjoyment for TGfU than for physical education both overall and among students with higher intentions to enroll. Students more prone to future enrollment also had higher need for cognition during TGfU than physical education after the study controlled for need for cognition in physical education. It may be necessary to better explain and justify TGfU especially with students higher in intentions to enroll while striving to enhance cognitive engagement during TGfU in those with lower intentions to enroll.

Abstract

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are a growing highlight in polymer chemistry. They are chemically and thermally stable, may be used in a variety of environments, and fulfill a wide range of applications. Computer-aided studies of MIPs often involve the use of computational techniques to design, analyze, and optimize the production of MIPs. Limited information is available on the computational study of interactions between the epinephrine (EPI) MIP and its target molecule. A rational design for EPI-MIP preparation was performed in this study. First, density functional theory (DFT) and molecular dynamic (MD) simulation were used for the screening of functional monomers suitable for the design of MIPs of EPI in the presence of a crosslinker and a solvent environment. Among the tested functional monomers, acrylic acid (AA) was the most appropriate monomer for EPI-MIP formulation. The trends observed for five out of six DFT functionals assessed confirmed AA as the suitable monomer. The theoretical optimal molar ratio was 1:4 EPI:AA in the presence of ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) and acetonitrile. The effect of temperature was analyzed at this ratio of EPI:AA on mean square displacement, X-ray diffraction, density distribution, specific volume, radius of gyration, and equilibrium energies. The stability observed for all these parameters is much better, ranging from 338 to 353 K. This temperature may determine the processing and operating temperature range of EPI-MIP development using AA as a functional monomer. For cost-effectiveness and to reduce time used to prepare MIPs in the laboratory, these results could serve as a useful template for designing and developing EPI-MIPs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Purpose: The interaction between 129Xe atoms and pulmonary capillary red blood cells provides cardiogenic signal oscillations that display sensitivity to precapillary and postcapillary pulmonary hypertension. Recently, such oscillations have been spatially mapped, but little is known about optimal reconstruction or sensitivity to artifacts. In this study, we use digital phantom simulations to specifically optimize keyhole reconstruction for oscillation imaging. We then use this optimized method to re‐establish healthy reference values and quantitatively evaluate microvascular flow changes in patients with chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) before and after pulmonary thromboendarterectomy (PTE). Methods: A six‐zone digital lung phantom was designed to investigate the effects of radial views, key radius, and SNR. One‐point Dixon 129Xe gas exchange MRI images were acquired in a healthy cohort (n = 17) to generate a reference distribution and thresholds for mapping red blood cell oscillations. These thresholds were applied to 10 CTEPH participants, with 6 rescanned following PTE. Results: For undersampled acquisitions, a key radius of 0.14kmax$$ 0.14{k}_{\mathrm{max}} $$ was found to optimally resolve oscillation defects while minimizing excessive heterogeneity. CTEPH participants at baseline showed higher oscillation defect + low (32 ± 14%) compared with healthy volunteers (18 ± 12%, p < 0.001). For those scanned both before and after PTE, oscillation defect + low decreased from 37 ± 13% to 23 ± 14% (p = 0.03). Conclusions: Digital phantom simulations have informed an optimized keyhole reconstruction technique for gas exchange images acquired with standard 1‐point Dixon parameters. Our proposed methodology enables more robust quantitative mapping of cardiogenic oscillations, potentially facilitating effective regional quantification of microvascular flow impairment in patients with pulmonary vascular diseases such as CTEPH. Abstract

Hawking radiation, despite its presence in theoretical physics for over thirty years, remains elusive and undetected. It also suffers, in its original context of gravitational black holes, from conceptual difficulties. Of particular note is the trans-Planckian problem, which is concerned with the apparent origin of the radiation in absurdly high frequencies. In order to gain better theoretical understanding and, it is hoped, experimental verification of Hawking radiation, much study is being devoted to systems which model the spacetime geometry of black holes, and which, by analogy, are also thought to emit Hawking radiation. These analogue systems typically exhibit dispersion, which regularizes the wave behaviour at the horizon but does not lend itself well to analytic treatment, thus rendering Hawking’s prediction less secure. A general analytic method for dealing with Hawking radiation in dispersive systems has proved difficult to find. This thesis presents new numerical and analytic results for Hawking emission spectra in dispersive systems. It examines two black-hole analogue systems: it begins by introducing the well-known acoustic model, presenting some original results in that context; then, through analogy with the acoustic model, goes on to develop the lesser-known fibre-optical model. The following original results are presented in the context of both of these models: • an analytic expression for the low-frequency temperature is found for a hyperbolic tangent background profile, valid in the entire parameter space; it is well-known that the spectrum is approximately thermal at low frequencies, but a universally valid expression for the corresponding temperature is an original development; • an analytic expression for the spectrum, valid over almost the entire frequency range, when the velocity profile parameters lie in the regime where the low-frequency temperature is given by the Hawking prediction; previous work has focused on the low-frequency thermal spectrum and the characterization of the deviations from thermality, rather than a single analytic expression; and • a new unexplored regime where no group-velocity horizon exists is examined; the Hawking spectra are found to be non-zero here, but also highly non-thermal, and are found, in the limit of small deviations, to vary with the square of the maximum deviation; the analytic expression for the case with a horizon is found to carry over to this new regime, with appropriate modifications. Furthermore, the thesis examines the results of a classical frequency-shifting experiment in the context of fibre-optical horizons. The theory of this process is presented for both a constant-velocity and a constantly-decelerating pulse, the latter case taking account of the Raman effect. The resulting spectra are at least qualititively explained, but there is a discrepancy between theory and experiment that has not yet been accounted for.

37. Henry Fielding : literary and theological misplacement

Abstract

This study is intended as a dialogue between literature and theology, utilizing selected works of the playwright and novelist, Henry Fielding (1707-54). While historical studies of Fielding have clearly yielded much of importance, a broader and less deterministic assessment concerning the latent ambivalences of this, one of the earliest novelists, has yet to be explored. Such an assessment has implications for the current relationship between, and the separate study of, literature and theology. The methodology is informed by an awareness of human frailty (what Fielding described as HUMAN NATURE) and centres upon the use of a specific interpretative tool that I call misplacement. By this, I mean the continuous parting with the ineffable – the perpetual recognition that, in writing, there is always a sense of the other, be that an alternative path not taken, the nagging sense of the numinous, or the coming to terms with the ludicrous nature of the human condition. Such fragile, comedic alterity provides a weak metaphysical root which is shared by both literature and theology. To illustrate the effects of such misplacement, this thesis sets the novels of Henry Fielding alongside works of contemporary philosophical theology such as the post onto-theological critique of Gianni Vattimo and John Caputo, as well as alongside postmodern works of fiction, such as those of Vonnegut and Calvino. In so doing, common critical zones such as epistemology, ethics, mimesis, canonicity, and revelation are investigated. The result of this analysis is that, in all these areas, the novel form, in Fielding’s hands, displays a powerful comic resonance with a theology which seeks to move beyond a strictly deterministic approach. Thus, we discover that Fielding’s work, rather than simply being expressive of proto-Enlightenment principles, actually subverts those assumed securities regarding the status of the individual and his place in the world, before God. In its conclusion, this study reveals the challenge of recognising the inescapably theological nature of the novel and that theology itself, is fictive. This assessment points to a greater need for further shared exploration of the relationship between theology and literature - to their mutual benefit.

Abstract

We study a continuous time economy where throughout time, insiders receive private signals regarding the risky assets' terminal payoff. We prove existence of a partial communication equilibrium where, at each private signal time, the public receives a signal of the same form as the associated insider, but of lower quality. This causes a jump in both the public information flow and equilibrium asset price. The resultant markets, while complete between each jump time, are incomplete over each jump. After establishing equilibrium for a finite number of private signal times, we consider the limit as the private signals become more and more frequent. Under appropriate scaling we prove convergence of the public filtration to the natural filtration generated by both the fundamental factor process $X$ and a continuous time process $J$ taking the form $J_t = X_1 + Y_t$ where $X_1$ is the terminal payoff and $Y$ an independent Gaussian process. This coincides with the filtration considered in 'Additional Utility of Insiders with Imperfect Dynamical Information' (Corcuera, et al. Finance & Stochastics 2004). However, while therein the filtration was exogenously assumed to be that of an insider who observes a private signal flow, here it arises endogenously as the public filtration when there are a large number of insiders receiving signals throughout time., 42 pages, 1 figure

Abstract

Background: Pulsed wave Doppler ultrasound is a useful modality for assessing vascular health as it quantifies blood flow characteristics. To facilitate accurate diagnosis, accuracy and consistency of this modality should be assessed through Doppler quality assurance (QA). Purpose: The purpose of this study was to characterize the accuracy, reproducibility, and inter‐scanner variability of ultrasound flow velocity measurements via a flow phantom, with a focus on the effect of systematic acquisition parameters on measured flow velocity accuracy. Methods: Using a manufacturer‐calibrated flow phantom, pulsed wave measurements were acquired on five clinical systems (iU22, Philips) with three models of transducers, including both linear and curvilinear models. The peak and mean flow velocities were estimated by vendor‐supplied spectral analysis tools. To investigate intra‐ and inter‐scanner variability, measurements were repeated using each scanner‐transducer pair under a standardized set of conditions. Inter‐scanner variability was assessed using ANOVA. Flow velocity accuracy was investigated by mean absolute percentage error. The impacts of receive gain, measurement depth, and beam steering on measured flow velocity accuracy were examined by varying each parameter over its available range and comparing to the ground truth flow velocity. Results: Inter‐scanner variability was statistically significant for peak flow measurements made using both linear and curvilinear transducers, though absolute differences in measured velocity were small. Inter‐scanner variability was not statistically significant for mean flow velocity. Receive gain, measurement depth, and beam steering were all found to impact the accuracy of measured flow characteristics for linear transducers. Accuracy of the flow measurements made with the curvilinear transducer demonstrated high consistency to changes in receive gain at a constant depth, though were impacted by increasing the measurement depth. Conclusions: Carefully and consistently selected acquisition and set‐up parameters are essential in order to establish a reliable and meaningful QA program. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We present a model that builds ``dark matter"-like halo density profiles from free-falling zero-point vacuum fluctuations. It does not require a modification of Newton's laws, nor the existence of as-yet-undiscovered dark matter particles. The 3D halos predicted by our model are fully constrained by the baryonic mass distribution, and are generally far from spherical. The model introduces a new fundamental constant of vacuum, T, having the dimensions of time. We deduce the associated formalism from some basic assumptions, and adjust the model successfully on several spiral galaxy rotation data while comparing our results to the existing analyses. We believe our approach opens up a new paradigm that is worth further exploration, and that would benefit from checks relating to other phenomena attributed to dark matter at all time and distance scales.
