IntroductionAmpelopsis grossedentata (vine tea), a high polyphenol content antioxidant plant resource, is renowned for its medicinal benefits. This study aimed to investigate the effects of Ampelopsis grossedentata extract (AGE) on anti-inflammatory and antioxidant ability, enhancement of intestinal immunity, improvement of intestinal structure, and regulation of gut microbiota in swine.MethodsA total of 135 weaned piglets were randomly divided into three groups: a control group, a low-dose group, and a high-dose group. Pigs were weighed and blood was collected on days 36, 85, and 154. The feed intake was recorded daily to calculate growth performance parameters. Background: Coronary atherosclerotic heart disease (CHD) is highly prevalent in Northwest China; however, effective preventive measures are limited. This study aimed to develop metabolic risk models tailored for the primary and secondary prevention of CHD in Northwest China. Methods: This hospital-based cross-sectional study included 744 patients who underwent coronary angiography. Data on demographic characteristics, comorbidities, and serum biochemical indices of the participants were collected. Three machine learning algorithms—recursive feature elimination, random forest, and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator—were employed to construct risk models. Model validation was performed using receiver operating characteristic and calibration curves, and the optimal cutoff values for significant risk factors were determined. Results: The predictive model for CHD onset included sex, overweight/obesity, and hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. For CHD progression to multiple coronary artery disease, the model included age, total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and HbA1c levels. The model predicting an increased coronary Gensini score included sex, overweight/obesity, TC, LDL-C, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, lipoprotein(a), and HbA1c levels. Notably, the optimal cutoff values for HbA1c and lipoprotein(a) for determining CHD progression were 6 % and 298 mg/L, respectively. Conclusions: Robust metabolic risk models were established, offering significant value for both the primary and secondary prevention of CHD in Northwest China. Weight loss, strict hyperglycemic control, and improvement in dyslipidemia may help prevent or delay the occurrence and progression of CHD in this region.

Guanine nucleotide-binding (G) proteins, namely, phosphate-binding (P) loop GTPases, play a critical role in life processes among different species. Based on the structural characteristics, G proteins can be divided into heterotrimeric G proteins, small G proteins and multiple unique unconventional G proteins. The highly conserved unconventional G protein YchF is composed of a core G domain, an inserted coiled-coil domain, and a TGS domain from the N-terminus to the C-terminus. In this review, we compared the structural characteristics of the G domain in rice OsYchF1 with those of Rattus norvegicus heterotrimeric G protein α-subunit and human small G protein Ras-related G protein C and analyzed the binding modes of these G proteins with GTP or ATP by performing molecular dynamics simulations. In summary, it will provide new insights into the enormous diversity of biological function of G proteins.

The effects of dietary supplementation with two particle sizes of nano zinc oxide (ZnO) on growth performance, immune function, intestinal morphology, and the gut microbiome were determined in a 42-day broiler chicken feeding experiment. A total of 75 one-day-old Arbor Acres broilers were randomized and divided into three groups with five replicates of five chicks each, including the conventional ZnO group (NC), the nano-ZnO group with an average particle size of 82 nm (ZNPL), and the nano-ZnO group with an average particle size of 21 nm (ZNPS). Each group was supplemented with 40 mg/kg of ZnO or nano-ZnO. Our results revealed that birds in the ZNPS group had a higher average daily gain and a lower feed-to-gain ratio than those in the NC group. ZNPS significantly increased the thymus index and spleen index, as well as the levels of serum metallothionein (MT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and lysozyme (LZM). The ZNPS treatments reduced interleukin (IL)-1β and tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) levels and increased IL-2 and interferon (IFN)-γ levels compared to that in the NC group. Additionally, compared with the birds in the NC group, those in the nano-ZnO group had a higher villus height to crypt depth ratio of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Bacteroides increased in the ZNPS group at the genus level. Further, unidentified_Lachnospiraceae, Blautia, Lachnoclostridium, unidentified_Erysipelotrichaceae, and Intestinimonas were significantly increased in the ZNPL group. In conclusion, nano-ZnO improved the growth performance, promoted the development of immune organs, increased nonspecific immunity, improved the villus height to crypt depth ratio of the small intestine, and enriched the abundance of beneficial bacteria. Notably, the smaller particle size (21 nm) of nano-ZnO exhibited a more potent effect.

The ancient guanine nucleotide-binding (G) proteins are a group of critical regulatory and signal transduction proteins, widely involved in diverse cellular processes of all kingdoms of life. YchF is a kind of universally conserved novel unconventional G protein that appears to be crucial for growth and stress response in eukaryotes and bacteria. YchF is able to bind and hydrolyze both adenine nucleoside triphosphate (ATP) and guanosine nucleoside triphosphate (GTP), unlike other members of the P-loop GTPases. Hence, it can transduce signals and mediate multiple biological functions by using either ATP or GTP. YchF is not only a nucleotide-dependent translational factor associated with the ribosomal particles and proteasomal subunits, potentially bridging protein biosynthesis and degradation, but also sensitive to reactive oxygen species (ROS), probably recruiting many partner proteins in response to environmental stress. In this review, we summarize the latest insights into how YchF is associated with protein translation and ubiquitin-dependent protein degradation to regulate growth and maintain proteostasis under stress conditions.

Zearalenone (ZEA) is a nonsteroidal estrogenic mycotoxin, which mainly contaminates grains and has estrogen-like effects on the reproductive system. Betulinic acid (BA), a natural lupane-type pentacyclic triterpene, has anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. This study aimed to investigate whether BA alleviates ZEA-induced testicular damage and explore the possible mechanism. Here, BA ameliorated testicular damage by mitigating the disordered arrangement of seminiferous tubules, the exfoliation of lumen cells, and the increase of cell apoptosis caused by ZEA. Meanwhile, BA alleviated ZEA-triggered testicular damage by restoring hormone levels and sperm motility, and reconstructing the blood-testis-barrier. Moreover, BA alleviated ZEA-exposed testicular oxidative stress by activating Nrf2 pathway. Furthermore, BA moderated ZEA-evoked testicular inflammation by inhibiting p38/ERK MAPK pathway. Overall, our results revealed that BA has a therapeutic protective effect on ZEA-induced testicular injury and oxidative stress via p38/ERK MAPK inhibition and Nrf2-mediated antioxidant defense activation, which provides a viable alternative to alleviate ZEA-induced male reproductive toxicology.

Grapevine: Genomic region linked to fungal resistance in Chinese varietal Researchers in China have discovered the first region of the grapevine genome known to confer resistance to ripe rot, a fruit disease caused by fungal pathogens. A team led by Shiren Song and Jiang Lu from Shanghai Jiao Tong University crossbred a European grape species that’s susceptible to ripe rot with a Chinese grape species that’s resistant to the disease. They inoculated the progeny’s leaves with the fungus and searched for genetic differences that could explain variation in rot symptoms. In this way, the researchers identified a segment of chromosome 14 from the Chinese Amur grape, Vitis amurensis ‘Shuang Hong’, that accounted for about 20% of difference in resistance capacity between the two grape species. This information could help breeders select more rot-resistant grapevines in the future.

Gamma-oryzanol (Orz), a mixture of ferulic acid esters of plant sterols and triterpene alcohols, has been proven to possess multiple activities. The purpose of this study was to explore the hepatoprotective effects and potential mechanisms of Orz against ethanol-induced liver injury in mice. Orz pretreatment significantly reduced the serum levels of ALP, ALT, AST and CYP2E1, and increased the TP and GLB levels in the ethanol-challenged mice. Orz increased the activities of CAT, SOD, GSH-PX and the GSH content in the liver, while decreased hepatic steatosis in ethanol-induced liver injure. Furthermore, Orz significantly decreased the protein expression of ASK1, JNK, P38, active-caspase-9 and active-caspase-3, and the protein ratio of Bax/Bcl-2 in livers of ethanol-challenged mice. These results suggest that Orz provides protection against ethanol-induced liver injury which might be due to its alleviation of oxidative stress and inhibition of apoptosis, possibly inhibiting MAPK signaling pathways mediated mitochondrial signaling pathway activation.

λ-Carrageenan (Carr), a seaweed polysaccharide, is used as a proinflammatory agent in research. Betulinic acid (BA), a naturally occurring pentacyclic triterpenoid, exerts immunomodulatory, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, anti-malarial and anti-HIV effects. The aim of this study was to investigate whether BA exerts anti-inflammatory effect against Carr-induced paw edema in mice, and how BA could mediate the expression of inflammation-associated MAPK-COX-2-PGE2 signal pathway. BA pretreatment significantly reduced the inflammatory response to Carr-induced paw edema, especially at 4 h after injection. BA reduced the serum levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1α, IL-1β, IL-5, IL-6, GM-CSF, KC, MCP-1 and PGE2 in Carr-treated mice, and increased those of anti-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-12. It also increased SOD, CAT and GSH-Px activities, and GSH content, and reduced MDA content in the liver of Carr-treated mice. Besides, BA reduced neutrophil infiltration in the basal and subcutaneous layers of the paw of Carr-treated mice, decreased the expression of COX-2 protein, and reduced the phosphorylation of JNK, p38 and ERK1/2. These results indicated that the protective effect of BA on Carr-induced paw edema might be due to its alleviation of inflammatory response and inhibition of oxidative stress, possibly by inhibiting MAPK-COX-2-PGE2 signaling pathway activation.

T-2 toxin, a trichothecene mycotoxin produced by Fusarium, is widely distributed in crops and animal feed and frequently induces intestinal damage. Betulinic acid (BA), a plant-derived pentacyclic lupane-type triterpene, possesses potential immunomodulatory, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory biological properties. The current study aimed to explore the protective effect and molecular mechanisms of BA on intestinal mucosal impairment provoked by acute exposure to T-2 toxin. Mice were intragastrically administered BA (0.25, 0.5, or 1 mg/kg) daily for 2 weeks and then injected intraperitoneally with T-2 toxin (4 mg/kg) once to induce an intestinal impairment. BA pretreatment inhibited the loss of antioxidant capacity in the intestine of T-2 toxin-treated mice by elevating the levels of CAT, GSH-PX and GSH and reducing the accumulation of MDA. In addition, BA pretreatment alleviated the T-2 toxin-triggered intestinal immune barrier dysregulation by increasing the SIgA level in the intestine at dosages of 0.5 and 1 mg/kg, increasing IgG and IgM levels in serum at dosages of 0.5 and 1 mg/kg and restoring the intestinal C3 and C4 levels at a dosage of 1 mg/kg. BA administration at a dosage of 1 mg/kg also improved the intestinal chemical barrier by decreasing the serum level of DAO. Moreover, BA pretreatment improved the intestinal physical barrier via boosting the expression of ZO-1 and Occludin mRNAs and restoring the morphology of intestinal villi that was altered by T-2 toxin. Furthermore, treatment with 1 mg/kg BA downregulated the expression of p-NF-κB and p-IκB-α proteins in the intestine, while all doses of BA suppressed the pro-inflammatory cytokines expression of IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α mRNAs and increased the anti-inflammatory cytokine expression of IL-10 mRNA in the intestine of T-2 toxin-exposed mice. BA was proposed to exert a protective effect on intestinal mucosal disruption in T-2 toxin-stimulated mice by enhancing the intestinal antioxidant capacity, inhibiting the secretion of inflammatory cytokines and repairing intestinal mucosal barrier functions, which may be associated with BA-mediated inhibition of the NF-κB signaling pathway activation.

T-2 toxin, the most toxic of the trichothecenes, is widely found in grains and feeds, and its intake poses serious risks to the health of humans and animals. An important cytotoxicity mechanism of T-2 toxin is the production of excess free radicals, which in turn leads to oxidative stress. Betulinic acid (BA) has many biological activities, including antioxidant activity, which is a plant-derived pentacyclic triterpenoid. The protective effects and mechanisms of BA in blocking oxidative stress caused by acute exposure to T-2 toxin in the thymus of mice was studied. BA pretreatment reduced ROS production, decreased the MDA content, and increased the content of IgG in serum and the levels of SOD and GSH in the thymus. BA pretreatment also reduced the degree of congestion observed in histopathological tissue sections of the thymus induced by T-2 toxin. Besides, BA downregulated the phosphorylation of the p38, JNK, and ERK proteins, while it upregulated the expression of the Nrf2 and HO-1 proteins in thymus tissues. The results indicated that BA could protect the thymus against the oxidative damage challenged by T-2 toxin by activating Nrf2 and suppressing the MAPK signaling pathway.

In the past decades, hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) has been receiving increased attention due to rising morbidity and mortality in both developing and developed countries. Koumine, one of the significant alkaloidal constituents of Gelsemium elegans Benth., has been regarded as a promising anti-inflammation, anxiolytic, and analgesic agent, as well as an anti-tumor agent. In the present study, we attempted to provide a novel mechanism by which koumine suppresses HCC cell proliferation. We demonstrated that koumine might suppress the proliferation of HCC cells and promote apoptosis in HCC cells dose-dependently. Under koumine treatment, the mitochondria membrane potential was significantly decreased while reactive oxygen species (ROS) production was increased in HCC cells; in the meantime, the phosphorylation of ERK, p38, p65, and IκBα could all be inhibited by koumine treatment dose-dependently. More importantly, the effects of koumine upon mitochondria membrane potential, ROS production, and the phosphorylation of ERK, p38, p65, and IκBα could be significantly reversed by ROS inhibitor, indicating that koumine affects HCC cell fate and ERK/p38 MAPK and NF-κB signaling activity through producing excess ROS. In conclusion, koumine could inhibit the proliferation of HCC cells and promote apoptosis in HCC cells; NF-κB and ERK/p38 MAPK pathways could contribute to koumine functions in a ROS-dependent manner.

In the present study, the complete chloroplast genome of Vitis davidii Foex strain ‘SJTU003’ was assembled and subjected to phylogenetic analysis. This chloroplast genome of ‘SJTU003’ was 161,335 bp in length, including two inverted repeat regions (IRa and IRb) that were separated by a large single-copy region (89,570 bp) and a small single-copy region (19,059 bp). The genome contained 133 genes, including 88 protein-coding genes, 37 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that V. davidii is most closely related to Vitis flexuosa and Vitis amurensis.

This study first released the complete chloroplast genome of Vitis yeshanensis. The circular genome was 161,188 bp in length, composed of a large single-copy region (LSC, 161,100–89,334 bp) and a small single-copy region (SSC, 115,689–134,745 bp), separated by two inverted repeat regions (IRA, 89,335–115,688 bp; IRB, 134,746–161,099 bp). The genome encoded 134 genes, containing 88 protein-coding genes (PCGs), 38 tRNA genes, and 8 rRNA genes. The phylogenetic tree showed a close relationship between V. yeshanensis and V. amurensis.

Vitis piasezkii is a widely distributed wild Vitis species in China with resistance to biological and non-biological stresses. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome of V. piasezkii was assembled for the first time. The chloroplast genome was 161,354 bp in length, containing a large single copy region (89,312 bp) and a small single copy region (19,309 bp) seperated by two inverted repeat regions. The genome harbors 135 genes, including 89 protein-coding genes, 38 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic tree analysis showed that V. piasezkii was the closest related to V. amurensis.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important regulatory roles by targeting mRNAs for cleavage or translational repression. Identification of miRNA targets is essential to better understanding the roles of miRNAs. miRNA targets have not been well characterized in mulberry (Morus alba). To anatomize miRNA guided gene regulation under drought stress, transcriptome-wide high throughput degradome sequencing was used in this study to directly detect drought stress responsive miRNA targets in mulberry. A drought library (DL) and a contrast library (CL) were constructed to capture the cleaved mRNAs for sequencing. In CL, 409 target genes of 30 conserved miRNA families and 990 target genes of 199 novel miRNAs were identified. In DL, 373 target genes of 30 conserved miRNA families and 950 target genes of 195 novel miRNAs were identified. Of the conserved miRNA families in DL, mno-miR156, mno-miR172, and mno-miR396 had the highest number of targets with 54, 52 and 41 transcripts, respectively, indicating that these three miRNA families and their target genes might play important functions in response to drought stress in mulberry. Additionally, we found that many of the target genes were transcription factors. By analyzing the miRNA-target molecular network, we found that the DL independent networks consisted of 838 miRNA-mRNA pairs (63.34%). The expression patterns of 11 target genes and 12 correspondent miRNAs were detected using qRT-PCR. Six miRNA targets were further verified by RNA ligase-mediated 5' rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RLM-5' RACE). Gene Ontology (GO) annotations and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway analysis revealed that these target transcripts were implicated in a broad range of biological processes and various metabolic pathways. This is the first study to comprehensively characterize target genes and their associated miRNAs in response to drought stress by degradome sequencing in mulberry. This study provides a framework for understanding the molecular mechanisms of drought resistance in mulberry.

The effects of low molecular sugars (sucrose, glucose and trehalose) on the retrogradation of tapioca starch (TS) gels stored at 4°C for different periods were examined with different methods. Decrease in melting enthalpy (ΔHmelt) were obtained through differential scanning calorimetry analysis. Analysis of decrease in crystallization rate constant (k) and increase in semi-crystallization time (τ1/2) results obtained from retrogradation kinetics indicated that low molecular sugars could retard the retrogradation of TS gels and further revealed trehalose as the best inhibitor among the sugars used in this study. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis indicated that the intensity ratio of 1047 to 1022 cm-1 was increased with the addition of sugars in the order of trehalose > sucrose > glucose. Decrease in hardness parameters and increase in springiness parameters obtained from texture profile analysis (TPA) analysis also indicated that low molecular sugars could retard the retrogradation of TS gels. The results of FTIR and TPA showed a consistent sugar effect on starch retrogradation with those of DSC and retrogradation kinetics analysis.

Medicinal herbal plants have been commonly used for intervention in different diseases and improvement of health worldwide. Koumine, an alkaloid monomer found abundantly in Gelsemium plants, can be effectively used as an antioxidant. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential protective effect of koumine against hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)-induced oxidative stress and apoptosis in porcine intestinal epithelial cell line (IPEC-J2 cells). MTT assays showed that koumine significantly increased cell viability in H2O2-mediated IPEC-J2 cells. Preincubation with koumine ameliorated H2O2-medicated apoptosis by decreasing reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, and efficiently suppressed the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) release and malondialdehyde (MDA) production. Moreover, a loss of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione (GSH) activities was restored to normal level in H2O2-induced IPEC-J2 cells upon koumine exposure. Furthermore, pretreatment with koumine suppressed H2O2-mediated loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, caspase-9 and caspase-3 activation, decrease of Bcl-2 expression and elevation of Bax expressions. Collectively, the results of this study indicated that koumine possesses the cytoprotective effects in IPEC-J2 cells during exposure to H2O2 by suppressing production of ROS, inhibiting the caspase-3 activity and influencing the expression of Bax and Bcl-2. Koumine could potentially serve as a protective effect against H2O2-induced apoptosis.

In this paper, an operational drought risk management framework based on the stream-flow intelligent internet control is proposed. In the proposed framework drought can be predicted, evaluated and mitigated by using a dynamic stream-flow control under the sensors detection. The framework mainly includes four sequential steps: (i) the stream-flow prediction, (ii) the stream-flow deficit index (SDI) analysis, (iii) the drought multiple regions response, and (iv) the stream-flow balance control. In order to instantiate a specific framework management, intelligence methods are utilized in these processes, namely the generalized regression neural network (GRNN) algorithm for the stream-flow prediction and the collaborative particle swarm optimization (CPSO) for the reservoirs water collaborative operation. Finally, a specific case study corresponding to the Fu basin in China is investigated to test the operability and reliability of the proposed drought risk management.

In this paper, we propose the reproductive stress hypothesis that describes the pregnant females response to reproductive events based upon the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and sympathetic adrenomedullary system. The main components of the reproductive stress hypothesis can be summarized as follows: (1) events unique to reproduction including empathema, pregnancy, parturition and lactation cause non-specific responses in females, called active reproductive stress; (2) the fetus is a special stressor for pregnant females where endocrine hormones, including corticotropin-releasing hormones and fetal glucocorticoids secreted by the fetus and placenta, enter the maternal circulatory system, leading to another stress response referred to as passive reproductive stress and (3) response to uterine tension and intrauterine infection is the third type of stress, called fetal intrauterine stress. Appropriate reproductive stress is a crucial prerequisite in normal reproductive processes. By contrast, excessive or inappropriate reproductive stress may result in dysfunctions of the reproductive system, such as compromised immune function, leading to susceptibility to disease. The novel insights of the reproductive stress hypothesis have important implications for deciphering the pathogenesis of certain diseases in pregnant animals, including humans, which in turn may be applied to preventing and treating their occurrence. An efficient and eco-friendly ultraviolet (UV) irradiation method was developed to synthesize a ternary nanocomposites of goldpolyindole-reduced graphene oxide (Au-PIn-RGO), and as-prepared nanomaterial was then used to fabricate an electrochemical caffeine (CAF) sensor. In the synthesis process, the polymerization of the indole monomer, the reduction of Au3+ ions and GO occurred simultaneously by UV irradiation without using any chemical reagents. The synthesis procedure was simple, inexpensive and green environmentally. Morphology, structure and composition of the Au-PIn-RGO nanocomposites were characterized by various technologies including UV-visible (UV-Vis) spectroscopy, fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Under the optimum conditions, a linear relationship existed between oxidation peak currents and the concentration of CAF in the range of 0.8-40 µM and 40-1000 µM, with a detection limit of 0.26 µM (S/N = 3). MLO (mildew resistance locus O), which encodes a transmembrane protein 7TM, is considered to be a model plant gene suitable for studying broad-spectrum resistance. It is a negative regulator of powdery mildew resistance and thus has potential applications in plant breeding. In the present paper, a full cDNA sequence encoding MLO was cloned from the leaves of mulberry (Morus multicaulis) based on mulberry expressed sequence tags (EST), homologous cloning technology, and 5'-RLM-RACE using RT-PCR;the sequence was designated MMLO (GenBank accession no. KX683296). The full cDNA was 1943 bp in length with 5'-untranslated region (UTR) of 106 bp, 3'-UTR of 160 bp, and an open reading frame (ORF) of 1677 bp encoding a protein of 558 amino acids. The estimated molecular weight and isoelectric point (pI) of the putative protein were 62.48 kDa and 9.03, respectively. The MMLO protein had Mlo domain and belonged to the Mlo superfamily. Phylogenetic analysis based on the amino acid sequences encoded by the MLO gene from various species showed that mulberry was closely related to Eucalyptus grandis, Ziziphus jujube, and Juglansregia. Quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR) analysis revealed that MMLO was expressed in all the tissues tested, including leaf, bud, fruit, stem, phloem, and xylem in mulberry with the highest expression in the phloem. The expression level of the mRNA increased and significantly changed under drought, cold, and salt stress treatments compared to the normal growth environment. The ORF segment of the MMLO was inserted into the expression plasmid pET-28a(+) to construct a recombinant expression plasmid. SDS-PAGE result revealed that fusion protein was successfully expressed. Two ionic (1aand 1b) and two neutral (2aand 2b) Cu(i) complexes containing an un-deprotonated or a deprotonated nitrogen ligand {2-(4-methyl phenyl) imidazole[4,5-f]-1,10-phenanthroline, MHPIP} and different phosphine ligands (bis[2-(diphenylphosphino) phenyl]ether and PPh3) have been synthesized and characterized by elemental analysis, 1H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography (1b, 2aand 2b). The complexes adopt a distorted tetrahedral geometry constructed by MHPIP (or MPIP−) and phosphine ligands. The emission spectra show that the ionic complexes exhibit almost ignorable luminescence. However, the deprotonation of the nitrogen ligand makes the neutral complexes exhibit orange or yellow emission both in solution and solid-powder states. Considering the different luminous characters of the neutral complexes, density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed at the B3LYP/6-31G** level to provide information about the impact of phosphine ligands on the frontier orbital. Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province is the largest freshwater lake in China and is historically a region of significant floods. Maximum annual lake stage and the number of severe flood events have increased during the past few decades because of levee construction that reduced the area available for floodwater storage. The most severe floods since 1950 occurred during 1954, 1973, 1983, 1995, and 1998. Each of these floods followed El Niño events that influence the Asian monsoon and that are directly linked to rainfall in the Changjiang (Yangtze River) basin. The 1954 flood was the largest ever recorded until the 1990s. That year the peak Changjiang stage at Hukou was 21.6 m, which was 1.6 m above the previous record high. The last major flood on the Changjiang was during 1998, when the peak Changjiang stage reached 22.5 m, higher than during 1954, even though peak discharge was lower. The most severe floods, including those in 1954 and 1998, require both 1) high rainfall and tributary discharge into Poyang Lake and 2) high Changjiang discharge and stage at Hukou that backflows into the lake or slows Poyang Lake drainage. Pairwise key establishment is a fundamental security service in sensor networks; it enables sensor nodes to communicate securely with each other using cryptographic techniques. However, due to the resource constraints on sensor nodes, it is not feasible to use traditional key management techniques such as public key cryptography and key distribution center (KDC). A number of key predistribution techniques have been proposed for pairwise key establishment in sensor networks recently. To facilitate the study of novel pairwise key predistribution techniques, this paper develops a general framework for establishing pairwise keys between sensor nodes using bivariate polynomials. This paper then proposes two efficient instantiations of the general framework: a random subset assignment key predistribution scheme, and a hypercube-based key predistribution scheme. The analysis shows that both schemes have a number of nice properties, including high probability, or guarantee to establish pairwise keys, tolerance of node captures, and low storage, communication, and computation overhead. To further reduce the computation at sensor nodes, this paper presents an optimization technique for polynomial evaluation, which is used to compute pairwise keys. This paper also reports the implementation and the performance of the proposed schemes on MICA2 motes running TinyOS, an operating system for networked sensors.
