In this poster we would like to present the new architecture and features of EVT 3 (Edition Visualization Technology), an open source Angular-based tool for the visualization of TEI-XML Digital Scholarly Editions. We will use and showcase two digital philology projects as test bed for the new functionalities.

Although EVT has slowly evolved into a versatile and powerful tool for publishing historical sources and literary texts on the basis of the XML/TEI format, none of the modifications - and periodic rewrites - of its code base has significantly changed the way in which edition data is handled. Even today, in fact, the main goal is to visualise and navigate such data, no doubt in a sophisticated way (support for multiple edition levels, support for named entities management, text-image linking), but in any case limited to what we might call “core functionalities” of a DSE. Texts encoded in XML/TEI, on the other hand, are a potential treasure trove of information just waiting to be interrogated and made available to the user. In this article I identify three use cases – the processing of special characters encoded by means of the and elements; the management of named entities, realia and other interesting elements of the text; the use of ontologies within an XML/TEI document – related to literary texts in Old English in order to propose a TEI encoding and a subsequent processing able to put the user in a position to receive answers to complex, transversal queries involving cross-links between different types of elements.

A discussion of the issues in understanding Humanities Data from the perspective of the Humanities.

Current digital scholarly editions (DSEs) have the opportunity of evolving to dynamic objects interacting with other Internet-based resources thanks to open frameworks such as IIIF and LOD. This paper showcases and discusses two new functionalities of EVT (Edition Visualization Technology), version 2: one improving the management of named entities (f.i. personal names) through the use of LOD resources such as FOAF and DBpedia; the other, providing integration of the published text with digital images of the textual primary sources accessed from online repositories (e.g. e-codices or digital libraries such as the Vaticana or the Ambrosiana) via the IIIF protocol.

This approach is broadly generalisable and answers a number of long-standing issues surrounding the publication of data and results in DH: It promotes the discovery and long-term survival of published data and results with no requirement for future maintenance; It conforms to archival standards and principles; It is fully available for future extension, addition, excerption, reuse, repurposing, or reanalysis by others without negotiation; It ensures that data and contextual analysis are linked bi-directionally meaning that users are always able both to access the discrete data points from which a Humanities-focused analysis and commentary is build and understand each data point in the context of these larger synthetic research products. The present volume “Digital Scholarly Editions as Interfaces” is the follow-up publication of the same-titled symposium that was held in 2016 at the University of Graz and the twelfth volume of the publication series of the Institute for Documentology and Scholarly Editing (IDE). It is the result of a successful collaboration between members of the Centre for Information Modelling at the University of Graz, the Digital Scholarly Editions Initial Training Network DiXiT, a EC Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action, and the IDE. All articles have undergone a peer reviewing process and are published in Open Access. They document the current state of research on design, application and implications of both user and machine interfaces in the context of digital scholarly editions. The editors of the volume are grateful to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions for enabling not only the symposium in 2016 but also the publication of the present volume with their financial support. This paper aims at showing how integrating the Archive of the Italian Latinity of the Middle Ages (ALIM) into the ILC4CLARIN repository can provide mutual benefits. Making ALIM available to a large community of scholars and researchers, on the one side, represents the first step to reduce the lack of resources for Medieval Latin in CLARIN and, on the other side, constitutes an unprecedented contribution to not only linguistic investigations, but also to the studies of the culture and science at the basis of the Western European society. The paper describes the adopted approach aiming to keep intact the structure of the archive and its metadata, which are both accurately mirrored into the ILC4CLARIN repository in order to maintain existing access practices of the users. This structure can be found in exactly the same state within the CLARIN VLO. Finally, the paper illustrates the advantages of experimenting with some ALIM data, once introduced within the CLARIN Language Resource Switchboard service: first results are shown from the analysis of some texts with the UDPipe tool suite and the distant reading tool Voyant.
