Abstract

miniBELEN is a modular and transportable neutron moderated counter with a nearly flat neutron detection efficiency up to 10 MeV. Modularity implies that the moderator can be reassembled in different ways in order to obtain different types of response. The detector has been developed in the context of the Measurement of Alpha Neutron Yields (MANY) collaboration, which is a scientific effort aiming to carry out measurements of (𝛼, 𝑛) production yields, reaction cross-sections and neutron energy spectra. In this work we present and discuss several configurations of the miniBELEN detector. The experimental validation of the efficiency calculations using 252Cf sources and the measurement of the 27Al(𝛼, 𝑛) 30P reaction is also presented.

Abstract

Abstract

A new β-decaying state in Bi214 has been identified at the ISOLDE Decay Station at the CERN-ISOLDE facility. A preferred Iπ=(8-) assignment was suggested for this state based on the β-decay feeding pattern to levels in Po214 and shell-model calculations. The half-life of the Iπ=(8-) state was deduced to be T1/2=9.39(10) min. The deexcitation of the levels populated in Po214 by the β decay of this state was investigated via γ-γ coincidences and a number of new levels and transitions was identified. Shell-model calculations for excited states in Bi214 and Po214 were performed using two different effective interactions: the H208 and the modified Kuo-Herling particle interaction. Both calculations agree on the interpretation of the new β-decaying state as an Iπ=8- isomer and allow for tentative assignment of shell-model states to several high-spin states in Po214.

Abstract

International audience; The $\beta$ decay of the neutron-rich $^{134}$In and $^{135}$In was investigated experimentally in order to provide new insights into the nuclear structure of the tin isotopes with magic proton number $Z=50$ above the $N=82$ shell. The $\beta$-delayed $\gamma$-ray spectroscopy measurement was performed at the ISOLDE facility at CERN, where indium isotopes were selectively laser-ionized and on-line mass separated. Three $\beta$-decay branches of $^{134}$In were established, two of which were observed for the first time. Population of neutron-unbound states decaying via $\gamma$ rays was identified in the two daughter nuclei of $^{134}$In, $^{134}$Sn and $^{133}$Sn, at excitation energies exceeding the neutron separation energy by 1 MeV. The $\beta$-delayed one- and two-neutron emission branching ratios of $^{134}$In were determined and compared with theoretical calculations. The $\beta$-delayed one-neutron decay was observed to be dominant $\beta$-decay branch of $^{134}$In even though the Gamow-Teller resonance is located substantially above the two-neutron separation energy of $^{134}$Sn. Transitions following the $\beta$ decay of $^{135}$In are reported for the first time, including $\gamma$ rays tentatively attributed to $^{135}$Sn. In total, six new levels were identified in $^{134}$Sn on the basis of the $\beta \gamma \gamma$ coincidences observed in the $^{134}$In and $^{135}$In $\beta$ decays. A transition that might be a candidate for deexciting the missing neutron single-particle $13/2^+$ state in $^{133}$Sn was observed in both $\beta$ decays and its assignment is discussed. Experimental level schemes of $^{134}$Sn and $^{135}$Sn are compared with shell-model predictions. Using the fast timing technique, half-lives of the $2^+$, $4^+$ and $6^+$ levels in $^{134}$Sn were determined.

Abstract

International audience; Prompt and delayed γ-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich 94Kr was performed, as part of the fission campaign at the ALTO facility of the IPN Orsay, using the fast-neutron-induced fission reaction 238U(n,f) in combination with the ν-Ball array, a novel hybrid γ spectrometer for energy and lifetime measurements. Several new yrast and nonyrast transitions were observed for the first time, extending the previously known level scheme. Additionally, we report on the observation of a new short-lived isomer at 3444 keV with a half-life of 32(3) ns. The analysis of the Nilsson orbitals obtained from Gogny cranked Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov calculations suggests a (9−) spin and an oblate deformation for this isomer corresponding to a two-quasineutron state, indicating an isomeric structure very similar to that of the neighboring isotones 96Sr and 92Se

Abstract

International audience; We report on the measurement of lifetimes of excited states in the near-mid-shell nuclei Dy164,166 using the gamma-ray coincidence fast-timing method. The nuclei of interest were populated using reactions between an O18 beam and a gold-backed isotopically enriched Dy164 target of thickness 6.3mg/cm2 at primary beam energies of 71, 76, and 80 MeV from the IPN-Orsay laboratory, France. Excited states were populated in Dy164, Dy166, and W178,179 following Coulomb excitation, inelastic nuclear scattering, two-neutron transfer, and fusion-evaporation reaction channels respectively. Gamma rays from excited states were measured using the ν-Ball high-purity germanium (HPGe)-LaBr3 hybrid γ-ray spectrometer with the excited state lifetimes extracted using the fast-timing coincidence method using HPGe-gated LaBr3-LaBr3 triple coincident events. The lifetime of the first Iπ=2+ excited state in Dy166 was used to determine the transition quadrupole deformation of this neutron-rich nucleus for the first time. The experimental methodology was validated by showing consistency with previously determined excited state lifetimes in Dy164. The half-lives of the yrast 2+ states in Dy164 and Dy166 were 2.35(6) and 2.3(2) ns, respectively, corresponding to transition quadrupole moment values of Q0=7.58(9) and 7.5(4) eb, respectively. The lifetime of the yrast 2+ state in Dy166 is consistent with a quenching of nuclear quadrupole deformation at β≈0.35 as the N=104 mid-shell is approached.

Abstract

We report on the first measurement of the half-lives of Kπ=11− and 12+ four-quasiparticle states in the even-even nucleus $^{178}$W. The sub-nanosecond half-lives were measured by applying the centroid shift method to data taken with LaBr$_{3}$(Ce) scintillator detectors of the NuBall array at the ALTO facility in Orsay, France. The half-lives of these states only became experimentally accessible by the combination of several experimental techniques - scintillator fast timing, isomer spectroscopy with a pulsed beam, and the event-by-event calorimetry information provided by the NuBall array. The measured half-lives are 476(44)ps and 275(65)ps for the Iπ=11− and 12+ states, respectively. The decay transitions include weakly hindered E1 and E2 branches directly to the ground-state band, bypassing the two-quasiparticle states. This is the first such observation for an E1 transition. The interpretation of the small hindrance hinges on mixing between the ground-state band and the t-band.

Abstract

International audience; Excited states in $^{133}Sn$ were investigated through the $\beta$ decay of $^{133}In$ at the ISOLDE facility. The ISOLDE Resonance Ionization Laser Ion Source (RILIS) provided isomer-selective ionization for $^{133}In$, allowing us to study separately, and in detail, the β-decay branch of $^{133}In$ J$^{\pi}$=(9/2$^+$) ground state and its J$^{\pi}$=(1/2$^−$) isomer. Thanks to the large spin difference of the two β-decaying states of $^{133}In$, it is possible to investigate separately the lower and higher spin states in the daughter, $^{133}Sn$, and thus to probe independently different single-particle and single-hole levels. We report here new $\gamma$ transitions observed in the decay of $^{133}In$, including those assigned to the deexcitation of the neutron-unbound states.

12 pags., 11 figs., 3 tabs. -- Open Access funded by Creative Commons Atribution Licence 4.0, The occurrence of octupolar shapes in the Ba isotopic chain was recently established experimentally up to N = 90. To further extend the systematics, the evolution of shapes in the most neutron-rich members of the Z = 56 isotopic chain accessible at present, Ba-148,Ba-150, has been studied via beta decay at the ISOLDE Decay Station. This paper reports on the first measurement of the positive-and negative-parity low-spin excited states of 150Ba and presents an extension of the beta-decay scheme of Cs-148. Employing the fast timing technique, half-lives for the 2(1)(+) level in both nuclei have been determined, resulting in T-1/2 = 1.51(1) ns for Ba-148 and T-1/2 = 3.4(2) ns for Ba-150. The systematics of low-spin states, together with the experimental determination of the B(E2 : 2(+) -> 0(+)) transition probabilities, indicate an increasing collectivity in Ba148-150, towards prolate deformed shapes. Abstract

Polonium isotopes having two protons above the shell closure at Z=82 show a wide variety of low-lying, high-spin isomeric states across the whole chain. The structure of neutron-deficient isotopes up to ^{210}Po  (N=126) is well established as they are easily produced through various methods. However, there is not much information available for the neutron-rich counterparts for which only selective techniques can be used for their production. We report on the first fast-timing measurements of yrast states up to the 8^{+} level in ^{214,216,218}Po isotopes produced in the β^{-} decay of ^{214,216,218}Bi at ISOLDE, CERN. In particular, our new half-life value of 607(14) ps for the 8_{1}^{+} state in ^{214}Po is nearly 20 times shorter than the value available in the literature and comparable with the newly measured half-lives of 409(16) and 628(25) ps for the corresponding 8_{1}^{+} states in ^{216,218}Po, respectively. The measured B(E2;8_{1}^{+}→6_{1}^{+}) transition probability values follow an increasing trend relative to isotope mass, reaching a maximum for ^{216}Po. The increase contradicts the previous claims of isomerism for the 8^{+} yrast states in neutron-rich ^{214}Po and beyond. Together with the other measured yrast transitions, the B(E2) values provide a crucial test of the different theoretical approaches describing the underlying configurations of the yrast band. The new experimental results are compared to shell-model calculations using the KHPE and H208 effective interactions and their pairing-modified versions, showing an increase in configuration mixing when moving toward the heavier isotopes.

Abstract

Proton therapy allows the treatment of specific areas and avoids the surrounding tissues. However, this technique has uncertainties in terms of the distal dose fall-off. A promising approach to studying the proton range is the use of nanoparticles as proton-activatable agents that produce detectable signals. For this, we developed an iron oxide nanoparticle doped with Zn (IONP@Zn-cit) with a hydrodynamic size of 10 nm and stability in serum. Cytotoxicity, defined as half of the surveillance, was 100 μg Zn/mL in the U251 cell line. The effect on clonogenic cell death was tested after X-ray irradiation, which suggested a radioprotective effect of these nanoparticles at low concentrations (1-10 μg Zn/mL). To evaluate the production of positron emitters and prompt-gamma signals, IONP@Zn-cit was irradiated with protons, obtaining prompt-gamma signals at the lowest measured concentration (10 mg Zn/mL). Finally, 67 Ga-IONP@Zn-cit showed accumulation in the liver and spleen and an accumulation in the tumor tissue of 0.95% ID/g in a mouse model of U251 cells. These results suggest the possibility of using Zn nanoparticles as proton-activatable agents to verify the range by prompt gamma detection and face the challenges of prompt gamma detection in a specific biological situation, opening different avenues to go forward in this field.

Abstract

Background: Recent proposals of high dose rate plans in protontherapy as well as very short proton bunches may pose problems to current beam monitor systems. There is an increasing demand for real-time proton beam monitoring with high temporal resolution, extended dynamic range and radiation hardness. Plastic scintillators coupled to optical fiber sensors have great potential in this context to become a practical solution towards clinical implementation., Purpose: In this work, we evaluate the capabilities of a very compact fast plastic scintillator with an optical fiber readout by a SiPM and electronics sensor which has been used to provide information on the time structure at the nanosecond level of a clinical proton beam., Materials and Methods: A 3 × 3 × 3 mm 3 plastic scintillator (EJ-232Q Eljen Technology) coupled to a 3 × 3 mm 2 SiPM (MicroFJ-SMA-30035, Onsemi) has been characterized with a 70 MeV clinical proton beam accelerated in a Proteus One synchrocyclotron. The signal was read out by a high sampling rate oscilloscope (5 GS/s). By exposing the sensor directly to the proton beam, the time beam profile of individual spots was recorded., Results: Measurements of detector signal have been obtained with a time sampling period of 0.8 ns. Proton bunch period (16 ns), spot (10 μs) and interspot (1 ms) time structures could be observed in the time profile of the detector signal amplitude. Abstract

Range verification of clinical protontherapy systems via positron-emission tomography (PET) is not a mature technology, suffering from two major issues: insufficient signal from low-energy protons in the Bragg peak area and biological washout of PET emitters. The use of contrast agents including 18 O, 68 Zn or 63 Cu, isotopes with a high cross section for low-energy protons in nuclear reactions producing PET emitters, has been proposed to enhance the PET signal in the last millimeters of the proton path. However, it remains a challenge to achieve sufficient concentrations of these isotopes in the target volume. Here we investigate the possibilities of 18 O-enriched water (18-W), a potential contrast agent that could be incorporated in large proportions in live tissues by replacing regular water. We hypothesize that 18-W could also mitigate the problem of biological washout, as PET ( 18 F) isotopes created inside live cells would remain trapped in the form of fluoride anions (F-), allowing its signal to be detected even hours after irradiation. To test our hypothesis, we designed an experiment with two main goals: first, prove that 18-W can incorporate enough 18 O into a living organism to produce a detectable signal from 18 F after proton irradiation, and second, determine the amount of activity that remains trapped inside the cells. The experiment was performed on a chicken embryo chorioallantoic membrane tumor model of head and neck cancer. Seven eggs with visible tumors were infused with 18-W and irradiated with 8-MeV protons (range in water: 0.74 mm), equivalent to clinical protons at the end of particle range. The activity produced after irradiation was detected and quantified in a small-animal PET-CT scanner, and further studied by placing ex-vivo tumours in a gamma radiation detector. In the acquired images, specific activity of 18 F (originating from 18-W) could be detected in the tumour area of the alive chicken embryo up to 9 h after irradiation, which confirms that low-energy protons can indeed produce a detectable PET signal if a suitable contrast agent is employed. Moreover, dynamic PET studies in two of the eggs evidenced a minimal effect of biological washout, with 68% retained specific 18 F activity at 8 h after irradiation. Furthermore, ex-vivo analysis of 4 irradiated tumours showed that up to 3% of oxygen atoms in the targets were replaced by 18 O from infused 18-W, and evidenced an entrapment of 59% for specific activity of 18 F after washing, supporting our hypothesis that F- ions remain trapped within the cells. An infusion of 18-W can incorporate 18 O in animal tissues by replacing regular water inside cells, producing a PET signal when irradiated with low-energy protons that could be used for range verification in protontherapy. 18 F produced inside cells remains entrapped and suffers from minimal biological washout, allowing for a sharper localization with longer PET acquisitions. Further studies must evaluate the feasibility of this technique in dosimetric conditions closer to clinical practice, in order to define potential protocols for its use in patients., (© 2022.
