Weak soil at construction sites necessitates ground improvement. Chemical stabilization is typically carried out using either lime or cement. The primary objective of this study was to assess the strength and durability of lime-stabilized soils modified with nano-alumina (NA). This study adopted the scientifically established initial consumption of lime (ICL) content for soil stabilization. In addition, nano-alumina was added in varying percentages as an auxiliary additive. It was observed that 0.5 % of nano-alumina was optimal with respect to the ICL for maximizing the soil stabilization. The stabilized soils were cured for 0, 7, 14, and 28 days. Post-curing testing revealed that the strength increased sixfold for the optimal combination, compared with the virgin soil. To understand the durability behavior of the optimal combination, the stabilized soil specimens were subjected to wetting and drying cycles after 28 days of curing. The optimal combination was nearly as durable as that of the lime-stabilized soil subjected to five cycles of wetting and drying.

The present investigation delved into the mechanical performance of fibre-reinforced cement-sand blocks with quarry dust as a replacement for sand. The introduction of fibres and quarry dust in the matrix is an attempt to achieve higher performance with available cement content and reduce the utilization of natural sand to improve the sustainability of the product. The experimental programme attempted to study the influence of quarry dust on the density, compressive strength, water absorption, sorptivity, and efflorescence characteristics of the blocks. The parameters considered include quarry dust (QD) content (replacement of sand from 0% to 100% in increments of 20%), a constant fibre content of 0.5%, and a constant water-cement ratio of 0.5. An attempt was also made to compare the strength performance of the blocks with various code requirements as well as results from similar previous investigations. The replacement of sand with QD resulted in a reduction in the density of the blocks from 2365 kg/m3 to 2008 kg/m3. The results of the investigation revealed that 60% quarry dust replacement of natural sand developed the maximum strength of the blocks. After 28 days of curing, blocks with up to 60% QD replacement were able to produce strength more than 16 MPa. The water absorption increased only marginally from 5.52% to 5.83% for 60% QD replacement. Moreover, the blocks were able to meet the requirements of all the different types of blocks as stipulated by Bureau of Indian Standards including stabilized soil blocks, concrete solid blocks, concrete hollow blocks, lime-based blocks, and lime-flyash blocks of class up to 17.5.

Pipe bridges are structures that play an indispensable role in chemical and oil plants. They support cable trays or pipe-carrying material. This study aims to identify the ideal configuration of a pipe bridge through the comparative study of girders with drop hanger and truss arrangements for three different spans. The most efficient arrangement for each span was suitably identified. Through the analysis carried out, it was then identified that the Girder arrangement is suitable for smaller spans such as 15 meters; while the truss arrangement was preferable for longer spans.

Installation of stone columns is a widely used stabilization method in improving the characteristics of soft clays. In this study, laboratory tests were conducted to understand the influence of column number, spacing and encasement on the load-carrying capacity of the modified soil. Unit cell concept is adopted for column diameters of 25.4 and 31.75 mm, one and two numbers of columns and spacings of 50, 70, and 90 mm under the conditions of with and without encasement. In addition to the laboratory study, finite element analysis was also done for similar parameters to understand the modified soil's settlement characteristics and stress concentration ratio. Based on the analysis, it is understood that the load-carrying capacity increases with number of columns and spacing. Considering the influence of encasement, larger diameter columns showed a more significant increase in the load-carrying capacity when compared to the smaller diameter columns.
