We present the first measurement of the left-right asymmetry in Bhabha scattering with a polarized electron beam. Abstract

We present the Cherenkov ring imaging detector in the endcap regions of the SLD detector and report initial performance. The endcap CRID was completed and commissioned in 1993 and is fully operational for the 1994 run. First Cherenkov rings have been observed. The endcap CRID detectors and fluid systems are described and initial operational experience is discussed. >

Abstract

We present the first measurement of the left-right cross-section asymmetry (ALR) in Z-boson production observed at the SLAC Linear Collider. In 1992 the SLD detector recorded 10 224 Z events produced by the collision of longitudinally polarized electrons with an unpolarized positron beam at a center-of-mass energy of 91.55 GeV. The average electron beam polarization during the run was (22.4 ± 0.6)%. We measure ALR to be 0.100 ± 0.0440 (stat.) ±0.004 (syst.), which determines the effective weak mixing angle to be $\sin^2\theta_W^{\rm {eff}} = 0.2378\pm 0.0056\, ({\rm stat.})\pm 0.0005\, ({\rm syst.})$.

Abstract

The capacity to model magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) flows in dynamical, strongly curved spacetimes significantly extends the reach of numerical relativity in addressing many problems at the forefront of theoretical astrophysics. We have developed and tested an evolution code for the coupled Einstein-Maxwell-MHD equations which combines a BSSN solver with a high resolution shock capturing scheme. As one application, we evolve magnetized, differentially rotating neutron stars under the influence of a small seed magnetic field. Of particular significance is the behaviour found for hypermassive neutron stars (HMNSs), which have rest masses greater than the mass limit allowed by uniform rotation for a given equation of state. The remnant of a binary neutron star merger is likely to be a HMNS. We find that magnetic braking and the magnetorotational instability lead to the collapse of HMNSs and the formation of rotating black holes surrounded by massive, hot accretion tori and collimated magnetic field lines. Such tori radiate strongly in neutrinos, and the resulting neutrino-antineutrino annihilation (possibly in concert with energy extraction by MHD effects) could provide enough energy to power short-hard gamma-ray bursts. To explore the range of outcomes, we also evolve differentially rotating neutron stars with lower masses and angular momenta than the HMNS models. Instead of collapsing, the non-hypermassive models form nearly uniformly rotating central objects which, in cases with significant angular momentum, are surrounded by massive tori. Abstract

The bacteriorhodopsin emission lifetime at 77 degrees K has been obtained for different regions of the emission spectrum with single-pulse excitation. The data under all conditions yield a lifetime of 60 +/- 15 ps. Intensity effects on this lifetime have been ruled out by studying the relative emission amplitude as a function of the excitation pulse energy. We relate our lifetime to previously reported values at other temperatures by studying the relative emission quantum efficiency as a function of temperature. These variable temperature studies have indicated that an excited state with an emission maximum at 670 nm begins to contribute to the spectrum as the temperature is lowered. Within our experimental error the picosecond data seem to suggest that this new emission may arise from a minimum of the same electronic state responsible for the 77 degrees K emission at 720 nm. A correlation is noted between a 1.0-ps formation time observed in absorption by Ippen et al. (Ippen, E.P., C.V. Shank, A. Lewis, and M.A. Marcus. 1978. D.C.]. 200:1279–1281 and a time extrapolated from relative quantum efficiency measurements and the 77 degrees K fluorescence lifetime that we report.

Abstract

We discuss a 'stationary 1 + log' slicing condition for the construction of solutions to Einstein's constraint equations. For stationary spacetimes, these initial data give a stationary foliation when evolved with 'moving puncture' gauge conditions that are often used in black hole evolutions. The resulting slicing is time independent and agrees with the slicing generated by being dragged along a timelike Killing vector of the spacetime. When these initial data are evolved with moving puncture gauge conditions, numerical errors arising from coordinate evolution should be minimized. While these properties appear very promising, suggesting that this slicing condition should be an attractive alternative to, for example, maximal slicing, we demonstrate in this paper that solutions can be constructed only for a small class of problems. For binary black hole initial data, in particular, it is often assumed that there exists an approximate helical Killing vector that generates the binary's orbit. We show that 1 + log slices that are stationary with respect to such a helical Killing vector cannot be asymptotically flat, unless the spacetime possesses an additional axial Killing vector.
